Civil War history and architecture in Bluffton
Visit the Heyward House and Historical Center, a mid-19th century farmhouse surrounded by green grounds. The house serves as Bluffton’s welcome center and as a period museum, and you can take guided tours around its Civil War-era interiors. Nearby, in Old Town, see the Church of The Cross, a carpenter-Gothic church dating right back to 1857. If you fancy a day trip outside of Bluffton, take a 15-mile drive west to the vast Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. The visitors’ center includes a mini-museum about the refuge – a perfect prelude to exploring its forests and wetland.
Wilderness walks in and around Bluffton
Outdoor adventurers can take a walk on the wild side along the New River Linear Trail – a hiking path that runs along a disused rail line, completely swallowed by lush plant-life. There are a few historic highlights parallel to the trail, too, including an old rice plantation. For a true slice of wilderness, visit Bluffton’s Victoria Bluff Heritage Preserve, an overgrown, luxurious 1,100 acre eden covered in various pine tree species, and home to white-tailed deer and darting foxes. Sports fans, meanwhile, can enjoy a round of golf at one of Bluffton’s courses.
The month of May is tops in Bluffton
Like much of South Carolina, Bluffton has a humid subtropical climate. This means swelteringly hot and humid summers with heavy thunderous rainfall, warm spring months, and mild winter months, where daytime temperatures hover between the 40s and low 60s. The height of summer itself – June through August – can be a bit too hot for some, with temperatures hitting 90 and above. The spring and fall are prime times to travel, with cooler but still pleasant temperatures, and less rainfall. In May, there’s also an enormous annual festival – Mayfest – with live music, food stalls, and parades.
Fragrant beauty in Bluffton
South Carolina is renowned for its abundance of flourishing plant and animal life, and Bluffton is no exception. The garden in your Bluffton vacation rental alone will likely overflow with fragrant honeysuckle, sweetspire, and hydrangea flowers. Following the deep blue May River directly east of Bluffton leads to Hilton Head Island, which boasts strings of sandy Atlantic ocean beachfront on its eastern shore. To the south of Bluffton lies Daufuskie Island, with its live oaks and wildlife reserves. But Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is the real top wildlife spot, home to great horned owls, bald eagles, and alligators.
