About this property

Historic Point Comfort Lodge on Upper Klamath Lake at Rocky Point

HISTORY
Point Comfort Lodge was built by a railroad and lumber tycoon from the mid west in 1912. At the turn of the century it was fashionable for wealthy families on the east coast to build large summer homes in the Adirondacks. Most of these vacation homes were log cabin or mission style architecture. When the Klamath Development Company was developing the lumber harvesting business in Klamath Falls they built Point Comfort to be their vacation home at the foot of the Cascade Mountains on the shore of upper Klamath Lake. Originally, four great lodges were built on Klamath Lake; they were Eagle Ridge, Odessa, Harriman Springs (built by E.H. Harriman) and Point Comfort. Point Comfort is the only one remaining today, making her the Grand Dame of the Lake

Point Comfort was designed by a renowned craftsman style architect from Berkley California. The restoration of the Lodge took 7 years to complete from the hardwood floors, wood paneled walls to the windows and doors containing 805 panes of glass. Her restoration adhering to historical guidelines has earned her a place on the National Registry of Historical Places.

LODGE STYLE
The Lodge is furnished with a blend of contemporary furniture and valuable antiques from the Craftsman period. For your enjoyment we have added two vintage pinball machines, no charge to play. The Lodge’s commercial kitchen is equipped to feed many, with its Wolf range, separate icemaker, dishwasher, two refrigerators, 8 foot stainless steel sink unit and prep island with sink. There are enough dishes for 30 people.

PATIOS, DECKS AND DOCKS
The front entrance has a lovely covered porch that is a restful place to sit. On the lakeside of the Lodge is a deck, which overlooks the lake. Below this deck is a large cement patio, perfect for outdoor entertaining. The dock will accommodate up to eight average sized boats and comes with a ladder if you happen to jump in. A peddle boat is available for guest use. Bring lifejackets. The three acres of land surrounding the Lodge are planted in rolling lawns, and natural plant species of the surrounding area. The gardens are beautiful in the spring when the lilac bushes and the flowering trees are in bloom. There are several large rock outcroppings to set off the gentle slope to the lake.

THE LAKE
Klamath Lake is home to 452 bird species and Eagles are often seen in the trees on the property. In the summer the trout come from all over the 94,000 acre lake into the bay in front of the lodge. These wild trout are a strain of steelhead landlocked in the lake 80 years ago. They average 2-3 pounds and fish over 8 pounds are not uncommon. This is a favorite spot for fly fishermen. There are miles of canoe and kayaking trails throughout the marsh. Enjoy a morning cup of coffee and watch the fish jumping in the lake! This facility is perfect for family reunions and gatherings of 8 or more.

NEARBY
Rocky Point Resort is ½ mile down the road, accessible by car, a short walk, or a boat ride from our dock to theirs. They have a small store, restaurant with full bar, and boat rentals. Lake of the Woods Resort is 8 miles north on Hwy 140, a short 10 minute drive. Lake of the Woods features a restaurant, boat rental, store and excellent swimming beaches. The Running Y Resort is 15 minutes south on Hwy 140 which features bar and restaurant, convenience store, and a wonderful 18 hole Golf course designed by Arnold Palmer, rated as one of the top 100 in the U.S. Crater Lake is a beautiful drive, just 45 minutes north. Lava Beds National Monument a hour to the south. These are just a few of the many things to do in the Klamath Falls area.

What a wonderful place for a family gathering’!
The bedrooms are plenty roomy and beds so comfortable! It’s fun to imagine it as an actual operating lodge. Plenty of parking. We would have enjoyed the outset of the property but November just not the month for it. I thought from Vrbo ad this was in Klamath Falls but it’s about 25 minutes out. Family said the drive was worth it for the accommodations.

Beautiful historic lodge on Klamath Lake
This is a charmer and the pictures don’t capture the historic beauty of this old lodge. In addition, the house was filled with antiques and art and so many interesting features. The coffered ceilings and the view of the lake were beautiful. The kayaks for our use were appreciated by our group. We gathered here with old college friends and it was a lovely and spacious place for our gathering with a big kitchen for us to cook together. The beds were all comfortable. The owners were so accommodating and east to work with. This is a great place for a large group gathering!

Perfect setting
The lodge and setting surpassed my expectations. The lodge accomodated the entire family and our needs. It was bigger than i expected. Gorgeous scenery, the lake right there, quiet, serene, and beautiful. Property manager was instantly responsive and helpful. We all were impressed with the place and experience. I highly recommend!

A magical week at historic Point Comfort
My family of 13 made wonderful memories at Bill’s beautifully restored Lodge. We felt like we were staying in a museum with many antiques that gave an historical perspective to life in this old wooded community. The entire lodge was very spacious and clean for our group. The kitchen was well equipped. The grandchildren children had activities they enjoyed outside. We all loved the area’s wonderful wildlife and especially enjoyed the fantastic fishing on the serene lake. We did have a few glitches in communication prior to our arrival but it was all mutually resolved. Thank you Bill for allowing us to thoroughly enjoy our stay on your great property. Aloha, Felice B.

Step into a different world
At the risk of spoiling the effect of your own experience, I'll describe what it's like to step into this historic register lodge. Step in...and you are stepping back in time to 1912. You also step up, most likely, a tax bracket or two unless you are a tycoon yourself. You can't help but imagine what life was like back then, in this lodge where the upper crust gathered to hunt, fish, boat, entertain and relax over 100 years ago. Don't bring your servant; that would deprive you the joy of cooking in the kitchen which has several commercial fixtures, good quality knives and ample utensils. Serve it up on an unending supply of dishes and cutlery. The lodge has a very comfortable, lived-in feel. Yes, you have become a lumber and railroad tycoon, and a couple of cobwebs don't bother you because hey, you're roughing it in your summer getaway lodge. We have stepped back into reality, but hope to return to the Comfort Lodge. What an experience! (Noteworthy also: Yes, we rented the pontoon boat which was great, also used the kayaks alot. Streets are quiet for walking. Fun day trips: Lava Beds National Monument and Crater Lake)
