About this property

Historic Villa/Classic Food & Wine retreat with Swimming Pool Wifi a/c parking

Located just 10 km from Verona, in the enchanting green hills of the Valpolicella appellation, Villa Sogara is a stunning historic villa (the Emperor of Austria stayed here in 1857) filled with treasures, and built during the 15th century upon Roman ruins. The owners have completely restored the Villa, which contains 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a fully appointed kitchen, dining room, library, music room (with piano), various living rooms and outdoor relaxation areas.

A new swimming pool with a terraced sunbathing patio is surrounded by 10 hectares (25 acres) of picturesque vineyards and orchards. Daily cleaning service, Wi-Fi internet access, air conditioning, two dishwashers, two washing machines, two refrigerators and a dryer are included. This stellar location is ideal for exploring the Veneto and the surrounding area, for attending the many international fairs held in Verona or just for avoiding the chaos of modern life.

Your hosts, Tommaso and Ela Peruzzi, are an accomplished sommelier and chef team. Guests are encouraged to arrange cooking classes, wine experiences and gourmet meals with them in advance. All classes, tastings and dinners are prepared and conducted at the villa so no driving is needed. (Be sure to order the classic Risotto Sogara for a dinner course. Prepared with the Villa-grown Lilium wine, accented with Pecorino with truffles, this is a dish not to be missed.)

The Veneto is a region full of history and tradition, renowned also for local food and wine production. Many interesting sites to be visited are Venice, Vicenza, Padova, and Lake Garda. Nearby, you will find countryside, mountains and seaside, lakes and sea beaches.

Verona is one of the main tourist destinations in north-eastern Italy, thanks to its artistic heritage, several annual fairs (Vinitaly, Fieracavalli, Marmomacc and many others), shows and operas, such as the Opera Festival in the Arena, the ancient amphitheatre built by the Romans.

Because of the value and importance of its many historical buildings, mostly of the Roman and Medieval ages, Verona has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Moreover, Verona is the setting of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Verona's Natural History Museum contains one of the most valuable collections of fossils and archaeological remains of Europe. Castelvecchio Museum features a collection of sculptures, statues and paintings in a magnificent castle built in 1354-1356.

Week vacation in Tuscany
My family (6 adult, 1 18 yo, and 1 9 yo) stayed for 8 days on the property. The host Tommaso was amazing from our initial contact to reserve the Villa to the day of checkout. The Villa was clean and spacious and provided a central location for us to make day trips to Verona, Venice, Florence, and Lake Garda. Taxi service from Verona was easy to arrange, although we rented 2 cars for the week as well. I'm surprised by some of the reviews about the property being in need of updating. It was clear to me after my conversations with Tommaso that the family property was built 600 years ago, renovated in the early 20th century, and then again updated (mainly to the bathrooms and kitchen) in the early 21st century. As such, sometimes the floors creaked and the fixtures were older. It's located in the hillsides of the Verona province on vineyards, so it is a rustic property. But this is what we were looking for. We wanted a place that was comfortable, uniquely Italian with period furnishings and a luxurious yet homely feel. I got exactly that at Villa Sogara. My only issue was that Wifi and cellular service could be spotty at the edges of the Villa. But overall, wifi was available and predominantly fast enough. The surrounding village was easily accessible and convenient. My family members are already planning a return visit. I'd highly recommend this property and the host to anyone looking to spend time in the area.

A historic site, with beautiful furniture, spacious rooms and a cozy kitchen all in the middle of a vineyard with a beautiful view. The host was very helpful and we tasted a great wine from his vineyard.

A wonderful authentic historic family villa. Tomaaso and his family have a passion for the property and the surrounding vineyards, wine & food. Very attentive, always pleased to help. A place of timeless beauty, Don’t expect sleek and modern, But with adequate AC and excellent internet, that was enough for us. We shall remember a wonderful 3 weeks there.

This historic house was bought by my great-grandparents in 1929. Now it's my duty to preserve it in good shape and to share it with those who appreciate this kind of mansion and look for the charm and tranquility of the Italian countryside. I had great days staying here with my grandfather when I was a child, and I hope that you will be able to have such a good time too.

Why they chose this property

The villa is located in the countryside in the eastern part of Verona. While the property is surrounded by vineyards of Valpolicella wine DOC production area, it has also easy connections to the motorway, to the airport, and to the cities of Verona, Venice, Padua, Mantua, and Vicenza. Lake Garda is also easily reachable in about 30 minutes, and with the new high speed railway lines also Florence and Milan are an easy destination for a daily trip. Guests come here to spend a vacation in a true piece of history, and also for many activities like food and wine tours, art history, museums, Opera, and so on.

What makes this property unique

Are you tired of hotels that look pretty much all the same? Have you had enough of cold, impersonal courtesy? Do you appreciate historic houses furnished with original antiques and surrounded by nature? Are you in search of a 'home away from home' to spend time and relax with your family and friends, surrounded by lush countryside? Villa Sogara is the place to be!
