WELCOME TO SPOON LAKE

Walk out the door to 2 kayaks or canoe & listen to the loons sing their greetings on this quiet, serene mountain-surrounded lake. Most summers, we love watching rare mating pairs of loons that nest on the far side of the lake. There are only about 80 mating pairs in the entire state of Montana. Sadly, in the summer of 2020 neither of the eggs laid survived due to bald eagles, but that's the 'circle of life'. Summer of 2021, we understand there were new loons that occupied the lake w/ no nesting evident. Summer of 2022, we observed up to 7 here on various occasions looking for a mate. There was lots of chasing happening. Summer of 2023 there was also no successful hatching of loon chicks. Bird lovers may also hear both Pileated Woodpeckers, Stellar Jays, Northern Flickers, Robins, Mallard Ducks, Canadian Geese, & we have seen Trumpeter Swans that graced us with their visit in May & June 2021, 2022 & 2023 plus brief fall stopovers. Enjoy hummingbirds & keep an eye out for those Bald Eagles & Osprey that often battle each other in the skies over the lake. Seeing them dive or swoop down into the water for a fish is a rare & exhilarating thrill. We have seen numerous muskrats & a few beaver sightings.

We are adjacent to Glacier National Park & surrounded by the Flathead National Forest. Always be vigilant for other wild animals like bear, mountain lions, coyotes, wolves, moose & deer at all times. We recommend you hike w/ Bear Spray. We DO NOT guarantee any of the leftover cannisters you may find in the bathroom top shelf, if any. It can be rented in Apgar inside the park.

If timing is right, huckleberries may be found on the property or nearby woods. If you're lucky, Jo may provide you with some fresh huckleberry muffins. Enjoy the BBQ & outdoor eating options overlooking the lake. If you prefer, please enjoy eating at the picnic table & play badminton in the meadow. Enjoy a refreshing swim off the private floating dock. PLEASE NO DIVING because it's too shallow!!! The barge w/ the trolling motor is for the OWNERS ONLY. Spoon Lake features glacier-fed, underground springs gurgling up in the far, left end of the lake, easily explored w/ the kayaks or canoe, but be respectful of temporary late spring/early summer buoys straight across the lake denoting sensitive nesting areas for our much-loved loons. It will tell you to stay outside the buoys for loon protection. Keep an eye out for moose or other wildlife. Summer of 2021, we were thrilled to see a moose cow & her calf for over an hour strolling the lakeshore & swimming across from right to left where the marshy vegetation must be inviting. It was over 100 degrees that day.

When you are ready to explore the vast million-acre Glacier National Park you are only 20 minutes from the West Glacier gate. Take the shortcut across Blankenship Bridge where the legendary North Fork & Middle Fork of the Flathead River meet. Explore some of Montana's finest fishing holes & whitewater rivers, or hike Glacier Park's magnificent peaks, waterfalls & glacial valleys in God's Country. Historic Polebridge is 29 miles up the North Fork Road (Hwy 486) past Lake Drive which is also the gateway to the North Fork GNP entry. You can also access GNP at the Camas Road entry half up to Polebridge which is a backdoor entrance to Apgar Village. The full spring opening & fall closing of the Going to the Sun Road (GTTSR) varies every year depending on the park service maintenance crews snow clearing efforts.

As of the Summer of 2023, the GNP vehicle reservation system is in effect at all park entrances. VERY IMPORTANT you visit the GNP website for reservation details to access the park & view road conditions. You MUST HAVE BOTH a park pass PLUS a vehicle reservation to enter the park. As you will read, there are other ways to secure access if you reserve a campground, reserve a boat trip or horseback ride, rent a boat or kayak, etc

We also HIGHLY recommend that you reserve a vehicle rental in advance. Rental car shortages have been a nationwide problem. If you can't find a rental at the airport various auto dealers may still be leasing cars & the Turo.com website offering privately rented vehicles to fill the void.

Many other exciting opportunities await you throughout the Flathead Valley & beyond. Explore trendy Whitefish boutiques & restaurants, the Whitefish Lake Lodge Resort Marina, providing watercraft rentals of all kinds PLUS the lakefront Tiki Bar & Grill, & the Whitefish Resort at Big Mountain for summer gondola rides & mountain biking. Bigfork art galleries, summer playhouse or Flathead Lake activities are only 30 minutes south. Some of our guests have hired fishing guides on Flathead Lake & it's a beautiful drive around Flathead Lake especially during cherry picking season in July.

We are 8.5 miles north of casual, laid-back Columbia Falls featuring the Three Forks Grille, the Gunsight Bar & Grill that includes outdoor picnic style seating with frequent live music, the new Monaco Steak House & Sports Bar, Vaqueros, Brooklyn Bagels, the Nite Owl & their Back Room Diner for dinner. Other eateries are scattered in Columbia Falls & from West Glacier to Whitefish. The Isaak Walton Inn & the Belton Chalet are historic sites with some fine dining & drinking establishments worth considering. Everyone loves Montana Coffee Traders or any number of coffee huts. We especially like the baristas at Friske Bean next to the Columbia Nursery on Hwy 2. You can find Smith's Grocery store on Nucleus in the original downtown of Columbia Falls, closest to us & Super 1 out on the hwy.

When your day is done exploring this magnificent part of Montana, our guests always say chilling at Spoon Lake is the perfect way to relax & reflect on your adventures, especially if you enjoy a steam shower or an outdoor hot tub.

We hope you will make wonderful memories at Spoon Lake just as we have. There have been a number of folks who are repeat visitors, especially honeymooners. One of our guests came for the 4th year in a row Summer of 2023 & are already planning their 5th visit in Summer 2024.

Cozy little getaway
Owners are super friendly and responsive. Great cozy cabin with a view to die for. Town is small but bery friendly. Also, if you have never been to this area or Montana in general, they do not speed. Drive the speed limit do not tailgate. No one is in a rush in Montana, so please adhere to their rules. Best coffee in town is cowgirl coffee and mountain trader co. Also, go for a drive through the glacier and you wont be disappointed. Thanks again

Simply Amazing!
This was our first trip to Montana and we couldn't have picked a better spot! Actually, the worst part about it, was having to leave! Everything was as advertised and the kayaks were an added bonus! The suggestions from Ed and Jo's delicious Huckleberry muffins were hospitality at it's finest! I would recommend this place to anyone! We'll be back!!

About the host

Host profile image
We are Ed & Jo Beveridge, the proud owners of this lovely Spoon Lake home since the summer 2013. We fell in love with the serenity & beauty of Spoon Lake & the custom log-accented home built by the former owners/custom home builder the minute we saw it.

It's our little slice of heaven on a serene lake in the Flathead National Forest just outside Glacier National Park & we would like you to enjoy it too.

I'm Ed & I was born in Montana. I have spent most of my life living in or visiting Montana from wherever life has taken me. You never can get Montana out of your blood. I have been enjoying Glacier National Park like my great-grandparents, grandparents, & parents most of my life & lived for many years on Flathead Lake. We also enjoyed Whitefish Lake for over 13 years when our kids were younger like I did as a small kid.

My wife, Jo, is a converted Minnesota gal who loves her singing loons & the mountain lakes in Montana. We have been bringing our three sons to Montana since they were little. 2 granddaughters 4 grandsons with one on the way.

Finally, our dream of retiring to Spoon Lake came true in 2020. We've been enjoying all 4 seasons now & really embrace our Spoon Lake lifestyle. We hope you enjoy your time with us in the privacy of your own apartment.

Why they chose this property

This property is 8.5 miles north of Columbia Falls, a little town between Whitefish & West Glacier. Historic & remote Polebridge is 29 miles further up the road with remote access to GNPs western slope glacial lakes. You can also access GNP from the Camas Road entry about 12 miles north of Lake Drive. The pavement ends about 3 miles past Lake Drive after the back road shortcut at the Blankenship Road turnoff to West Glacier. Everyone who has stayed at the Spoon Lake Lodge seems to spend most of their time hiking, fishing, exploring Glacier Park & all the wonderful surrounding communities & lakes. People drive all over to Many Glacier near the Canadian border & Two Medicine on the eastern side of the park. Be sure to check the annual Going to the Sun Road opening date. The date is flexible depending on snow removal efforts each spring. It is VERY IMPORTANT you visit the GNP website for reservation details in addition to any other National Park pass you may already have to access the Going to the Sun Road & the North Fork entry at Polebridge.

We offer you a very comfortable place with a spectacular, serene view & the songs of our Spoon Lake loons with all the comforts of home at the end of your day. Or just relax & take a spin in the canoe, kayaks right outside your door. Enjoy a romantic & relaxing 'suits optional' spa in our new Nordic Hot Tub (2020) right outside your bedroom window below the upper deck with serene lake views. It is for your exclusive private use while you are here. We will maintain the water chemistry when you are absent. We are very conscientious about sanitizing your space between guests & give you a wide berth if we happen to be at home in the space above.

What makes this property unique

The Cabin consists of 3 floors: The Top Floor, the Middle Floor, and the Lower Floor Walkout to the Lake. We only rent the Lower Floor apartment which is fully contained & locked off from the top two floors. We may or may not be present during your stay.

Your cozy rental provides 2 big picture windows at the living area & bedroom. The covered patio at your front door has an outdoor table & 4 chairs, a BBQ with a splendid lake view. We provide your clean towels & linens, all ready for your arrival. You have the use of the 2 kayaks and a canoe. The floating barge w/ trolling motor attached to the dock is only for the owners' use. Spoon Lake is a 'no wake' 60-acre lake, so it's very quiet. Enjoy a romantic & relaxing 'suits optional' spa in our Nordic Hot Tub right outside your bedroom window below the upper deck with serene lake views. It is for your exclusive private use while you are here. We will maintain the water chemistry when you are absent. Feel free to forage for huckleberries if you feel lucky. We take care of all the cleaning including bedding and linens when you leave. There is no garbage service in this rural area. A bear-proof garbage can is provided for your use. Please make sure it is secure. If we aren't here to take care of your garbage disposal & you are collecting too much you will need to take it to the Columbia Falls waste collection center at 1073 Best Way, Columbia Falls, MT 59912 or a bin somewhere on your adventures. Otherwise, our cleaning service will dispose of it upon your departure.
