About this property

4 bedroom Cotswold cottage near Stow-on-the-Wold - Old Brewery House

Located in a secluded valley close to the classic Cotswold town of Stow-on-the-Wold, Old Brewery House is a terrific Cotswold retreat with a real difference, sleeping up to 8 guests in four spacious ensuite bedrooms. Old Brewery House is located within the grounds of the Donnington Brewery (hence the name!) which in 1827 was bought as a working mill by Thomas Arkell, his descendant Richard Arkell founded the Brewery here in 1865. Inside the property, much of the original charm and character has been retained and many of the rooms enjoy stunning views across the gardens with roaming peacocks and the beautiful private lake with ducks and swans. The open-plan kitchen/dining room is well equipped and there are 2 living rooms, so plenty of space! The four bedrooms can be configured into doubles or twins (on request) which makes this property flexible for all parties. Oh, and the beer produced is of course available to purchase from Andy, the onsite manager!

For larger groups, Old Brewery house can be booked with Waterhead Barn with a maximum occupancy of 21

Not quite what we expected...

On arrival, the key in the safe is for the boot room (basement) door which leads up to the kitchen/lounge etc. I'm afraid this gives a terrible first impression as it is damp and uninviting. There are some challenging steps in all areas of the house: our elderly guest was unable to come but I feel sure she would've found moving around very difficult. Also, the 'walk in' shower that she would have used had a high step to enter it which wouldn't have suited at all. The cleanliness of the property was fine, especially the bedrooms, but there were issues with loose light fittings, baths were difficult to get in and out of and the state of the wall in the 'snug' was disgusting! Whilst the kitchen was large and comfortable and suited our family gathering the equipment was questionable: no oven gloves, no kitchen towels, dirty coasters and table mats for example. The tv remote was covered in sticky dirt and was really off putting. Overall we were expecting a much more luxurious property for the amount charged although the surroundings went some way to make up for it.

Spacious, comfortable house in ideal location

All the essentials were provided at Old Brewery House and it was very clean. It is an old property and so some old things were expected but it didn’t feel cared for. Things like wonky pictures, curtains dropping off the rail, outer doors that cannot be used due to faulty locks. Nevertheless we enjoyed the stay and the location.

A great character property with lots of space and facilities. Lovely setting with the waterwheel, lake, grounds and wildlife, including a friendly peacock. A stay to recommend

Beautiful Cotswolds weekend

We had a really lovely weekend in the Cotswolds, walking over rolling hills and stopping off in beautiful market towns, coffee shops and welcoming pubs. The house has lovely big rooms and is well equipped. Really enjoyable.

Brilliant birthday weekend with friends

The house & garden are beautiful & incredibly spacious. If anything the photos on the website don't do it justice. Andy was on hand to answer any queries & give the essential tutorial on 'how to work the oven'. The location is perfect for exploring the Cotswolds including walks from the doorstep to Stow & Lower Slaughter (& no doubt many more). We were all sad to say goodbye to Neville & Nigel (the names we gave the resident peacocks) but I think there's a good chance we will be back!

Great stay!

Wonderful and large place quick drive from Stow on Wold and all the other charming towns in the area. Comfortable home with huge, beautiful rooms and plenty of space. The fireplace was a plus as well. Beautiful grounds surrounding the home too

A wonderful short break

We had a wonderful short break in Old Brewery House. It is very spacious, we were a party of 3 couples and a baby and we all had good sized rooms and ensuites. The kitchen was large and well equipped. I did take my own surface cleaner which was not provided. Pillows were poor so I would take my own if I went again! I thoroughly recommend the tour of the Brewery in a Friday.

Spacious with Rustic Charm in the Heart of the Cotswolds

This special property easily accommodates two families with children. The en-suite bedrooms are spacious and comfortable, and the large kitchen/dining combo is great for cooking and socializing. There are two comfortable living spacious for adults and children that are great for winding down or playing games at night. The outdoor space is amazing. There is a level pitch for croquet (equipment included!). We hiked around the farm along the mill, lake, river, horses, and sheep. It's an easy and quick driving access to Stow for anything you need, from groceries to fresh coffee, bread, cheese, and shopping in the charming village. On-site Donnington ales are spot on after spending the day outdoors. And the proximity to the Cotswold attractions are limitless from this central location. Finally, the property manager is friendly, helpful and welcoming and responds immediately to any inquiries. We shall return!

Family weekend away

We had a lovely long weekend stay at The Old Brewery house. The location and setting were both perfect. The house was lovely and warn day and night, used the log burner which gave out a warming glow. The Arga in the kitchen worked well which warmed the house up too. We did some lovely walks from the house. A circular walk to Longborough which has a nice pub and great Sunday roast, walked back via Donnington. Andy at the brewery was worth his weight in gold in helping us sort out a car breakdown. Thanks again Andy for your help and local knowledge, hope to return.

70th birthday party

what a lovely spot lost in its own valley, with the brewery and stabling. the house has a lovely character with slightly wonky floors and doors ,the rooms are generous, the huge kitchen with the Everhot ovens was the hub of our party. the warm downstairs boot and cloakroom sorted all the walking gear and the belfast sink was perfect for washing dirty dogs.

Good in Parts

The Old Brewery is sited in a complex of buildings from which a craft Brewery is operated, but there is no significant noise from those operations. The situation is delightful being well away from the road and near to a stream, but no guidance was given of finding access which involved going round to the back entrance, the front door being barred to guests. The accommodation is spacious with 4 bedrooms, two sitting rooms and a newly fitted kitchen. But apart from the kitchen the place is very tired and some of the beds long overdue for replacement. So, overall we enjoyed our stay but this was more to do with the location than the amenity of the property.

Lovely quiet location

Four of us stayed for a long weekend and we absolutely loved the property, the peacocks, the huge trout in the lake and the peace and quiet. The kitchen is well equipped with dishwasher and two fridges - do bring kitchen roll, apart from that we had everything we needed. The bedrooms are spacious, each with an en-suite, good levels of light. Comfortable beds, sufficient towels. Lots of hot water and the heating works very well. This is an old rustic farmhouse full of charm. We loved the wood burner, flooring, the cellar and the generous proportions - very roomy, exceptionally comfortable. Our only niggle was an out of date TV arrangement, with no streaming available. TV controls didn’t work so a review and an update is needed for both the TVs in the two sitting rooms.

Weekend break

Lovely grounds outside. We enjoyed the peacocks and setting. Croquet on the lawn was fun. The Aga wasn't the easiest to cook on but we managed in the end. Kitchen would have benefited from a few more items. Eg there were only about x4 prosecco glasses and we had x8 adults staying. Also some more cups etc. The bedrooms were great and plenty of room.

An enjoyable stay

We liked the big airy bedrooms, all ensuite, the kitchen table that we could all sit at and there were enough sofas for everyone to have a seat. The house was lovely and warm and very clean, we even got used to the range which was easy but slow. We enjoyed watching the peacocks and the lake and water wheel were very scenic. We didn't mind the activity from the Brewery, moving the barrels and deliverires etc, this was all well away from the entrance except for the last morning when there was a forklift moving stuff around as we were packing up. We didn't like the build of of peacock poo all over the entrance steps! The surrounding villages were well worth a visit. We enjoyed ourselves and would stay here again, we were an end of season stay so the house was needing a little TLC.

Charming, comfortable character house in a beautiful location

The Old Brewery House is sits amongst the buildings of the historic Donnington Brewery - including its picturesque spring-fed lake - and surrounded by beautiful countryside. An excellent location for walkers, stunning Cotswolds towns such as Stow on the Wold and Bourton on the Water are an easy walk away - along well marked paths, through lovely English countryside. The house is charming and comfortable - think characterful Cotswolds farmhouse more than slick modern luxe - with more than enough space for eight adult guests in the communal spaces; all bedrooms are ensuite (and the ensuites are generous, not wash cupboards masquerading as bathrooms!) which is a real bonus. The house is a real haven away from the tourist bustle of the nearby towns - yet close enough to enjoy their excellent pubs, restaurants and shops. Host Andy is outstanding; a font of local knowledge and excellent communicator, he showed us around the property, ensured we were comfortable and was super-accomodating when it came to check-in/ out. We were sad to leave.

Astounding

What a fantastic place for a short break, apart from the challenge of the Aga ,we truly could not fault anything .Bedrooms were very bright and spacious. Location was perfect for shops and bars and restaurants .Absolutely loved the grounds, our (nearly 1 ) grandson loved the peacocks sitting outside the windows every day. The lake was beautiful with swans, duck's and fish swimming in it. There were also cows and horses nearby. The whole place was very peaceful except for the shrill peacock cries every now and again, but then that's nature. The brewery next door was not as noisy as we expected and the beers certainly went down a treat. Very easy website with precise information on the property as well as directions. Big thank you to Andy, the property manager for being so helpful. We would definitely look to return at a future date.

Perfect Spot to Stay in the Cotswolds

The old brewery house was an excellent place to spend a week in the Cotswolds. Everything we wanted to do and see was only a short drive away, and the property was very nice. The house had plenty of space for all of us and the kitchen was very well appointed. Andy was very helpful when we arrived and quick to respond to any questions. Our 1-year old daughter especially loved all the friendly peacocks.

Great location, Old Brewery House was quirky and comfortable. The grounds were fabulous

We found the Old Brewery House a great place to stay. A very old building, the accommodation was quirky and comfortable. For a working brewery it wasn't noisy. The surrounding grounds were peaceful and beautiful. The resident peacocks were very tame and entertaining.

Loved our stay at Old Brewery House

This lovely house offered a high level of comfort in a rural setting. We enjoyed sitting in the well kept garden and the scenic lake, adjacent brewery and peacocks were an added bonus!
