Beautiful Beach Compound with Loads of Charm

Our stay was everything it should have been and more. The host was very thoughtful and sent us detailed instructions with useful tips and local information. Both houses are fully equipped with everything you might need or possibly want from dog bowls to beach passes. I really can’t say enough about how cool this property is. There were so many things to do on site including but not limited to hot tubs, a theater, a large game room with everything from pool to Pac-Man, exercise equipment, games, a giant outdoor chess board, and plenty of decks to hang out on - there was even a pair of binoculars for us to use. The dogs and kids loved having the beach so accessible - a two minute walk, if that! The main house is like a giant maze full of bedrooms and bathrooms, each with their own unique style. The kitchen had excellent appliances which made it very enjoyable to cook as a family - we actually never ended up eating out and instead, sourced local seafood which we steamed in the commercial steamer provided. We watched the sunset every night while the wild horses ate grass in the backyard. Both houses are very well maintained. Everything was clean and in working order. There were so many extra touches that you normally do not find in rental properties these days. Our stay was completely stress free. The host definitely takes pride in this property and goes the extra mile to make sure guests feel welcome and comfortable from the minute they arrive. We will definitely be back!

Owner Fraudulent

We stayed at this property for the 4th of July holiday with 4 young children. Owner has LOTS of broken items, including vacuum, washer and dryer, patio furniture, smoke detectors, no hot water, poor water pressure, etc. We could NOT wash our clothing or towels!! Owner promised a credit of $1000 but then filed fraudulent insurance claim for $950 to offset the credit that was promised. Owner stated that a credit would be given if insurance claim is approved.

A lovely slice of heaven

My parents had wanted to visit the outer banks of NC for years. Having lived in Durham, my wife and I visited the area many times, and I decided if we ever came back to visit, I wanted to stay on the beach drive area. It is other worldly there. To the east is the Atlantic and to the west is the Sound. Everywhere in between is sugar sand for as far as one can see to the north and south, and in the middle of all this is Sunnybank. We had sunrises AND sunsets. With the ocean (surfing, kites, boogie boards, beach lounging), pool, games, hot tubs, movie room, pub, and simply taking in the views, we had no shortage of great family fun all day long for the adults and kids alike. There's really no shortage of things to do on-site, yet plenty of space if one wants to find a quiet nook to nap or read. Oh, and the horses...they made a showing every day we were there. On the first day they came right up into the driveway as we stood there, seemingly just to say "Hi." The house and property itself were all very nice. The architecture of the house is really very impressive. Rooms were all clean, individually themed, and all provided ample space and accommodations for our party. The kitchen was well stocked and there was plenty of fridge (2 fridges between kitchen and lower level) and pantry space for grocery runs. Note that it is a bit of a trek back and forth to town to get groceries over the beach, so meal planning does help. Dorian had just come through, so there was a minor amount of weather damage, but that is to be expected and comes with the territory. No doubt that will get fixed up in due course. Communication with the owner was always prompt, and she was very helpful with everything we asked. Overall, our time at Sunnybank really exceeded my expectations. With so many places in the world to see, I rarely want to return to the exact same place more than once...this one may be an exception. So many great memories made there, and everyone left wanting more.

Wonderful Family Time

We had a great family time. Anything we could have thought of for any age...baby through grandparents...was available. We have stayed in many different homes in many different areas and have never had a kitchen so well supplied. This owner has definitely thoughtfully supplied for their guests needs. We saw the horses every day, in fact, they sheltered from the rain right in the carport of the house. This was truly an experience we have never had before. My greatest fear was getting stuck in the sand, but it was never a problem. We lowered the tire pressure as advised, and actually only had to shift into 4 wheel drive a few times. I would highly recommend this property to beach lovers and anyone wanting a relaxing vacation.

Amazing!!

Wow what can I say. Sunny Banks was a perfect setting for us and our event. It was fully equipped, decorated beautifully and immaculate. Although I’ve stayed in many beautiful houses in the Outer Banks.. this is a home with character. Karen has paid very close attention to detail making sure the kitchen was equipped with everything. All types of pots, several coffee makers, electric tea kettle, waffle maker, baking pans, and all types of containers to store leftovers…who does that..!! it even has a professional steamer for fresh seafood. There was no skimping on dishes or utensils and all the drawers and cabinets are labeled..no guessing where things were. Our event was held at pool side which also has a game room with a full bar. the caterers were able to set up bar and appetizers while the chefs where in the main house cooking. I say main house because above the game room is a very large king suite with a full size bed and two separate decks. Every bedroom although different has a full bathroom. Don’t be fooled even the full suite was huge ..it had a large screened porch and a sitting room. The living room was perfect for watching TV or just looking out towards the beach. Beyond the enclosed pool area, there are chairs, table, charcoal grill and a children’s play ground. This is where we saw most of the horse sitings. Just beyond that is the beautiful beach. Dealing with Karen was very easy and straight forward. Her packet is very informative READ IT! She also gives you numbers in the event you have a problem like getting stuck in the sand… This is my favorite part of OBX but you must have the proper vehicle. I would definitely stay here again….so comfortable Thank you Karen

Nicest home we've ever vacationed in

Unbelievably well prepared home to enjoy a week or longer. 2 dishwashers, 6 burner Viking gas range, multiple refrigerators, countless kitchen utensils, appliances, etc. I would pay these folks to decorate and maintain my home. Just amazing the forethought put into predicting every need. Even on our last day we were discovering warm rain jackets left hanging in the closet in case we needed them. Hose bibs everywhere outside for washing off sand, and even long hose by the carport to wash the saltwater off the vehicles for those worried about rust. Binoculars for viewing horses, kayaks and canoes, oppulent tin ceiling tiles in the gameroom, belted ceiling fans only seen in nice pubs. Wow, absolutely breathtaking the level of thought taken into decorating. Even the dried flower arrangements over the fridge with a swan/bird hidden within was art-worthy in its presentation. The art itself or hangings which had detailed sea maps of ship wrecks and news articles providing local-color of the dunes and the small town history could keep you reading for hours. There were nice leather-bound books, huge supply of movies, chairs and couches everywhere, the largest chaise lounge I've ever seen. Steam shower, multiple easy to use hottubs, simple coded doors for entry and lockup, and on and on. Clearly the owner has spent as much if not more on creature comforts as on location and facility. The elevator was simple to use and saved us a lot of work in unpacking and packing. We waited three years for availability and finally were able to spend Spring break here with kids and their friends. It was worth the wait. We've looked at and rented homes throughout Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia and none were close to the level of detail and value for the money as this home. Hopefully we won't have to wait another 3 years before returning. 5 stars isn't enough.

We loved the property!!!!

Sunnybank is simply beautiful. It is a great house with every amenity one could possibly want. There were 9 women and so much room for us to be together or go off separately for some quiet time. We cooked in the awesome kitchen and ate together in the very spacious dining area or in the breakfast nook. There is a really nice movie room and awesome game room. Most of the bedrooms come with their own bathroom suite. There is a walkway right down to the beach with direct access. We were lucky enough to have wild horses show up on the day we left to say goodbye. Overall, we had a wonderful stay and great experience. The owner, Karen was very accommodating and helpful with suggestions for things to do and see. I would highly recommend this beautiful estate.

Awesome!!

This was our first time renting this property and I have to say we were not disappointed. The house was huge!! There were 12 of us and we had a lot of room to spread out. The house was clean and had everything we could possibly need. The theatre room was awesome as it rained one day and we watched a couple of movies. There were games and movies. The ice machine was a fantastic thing to have. You can literally just pack your clothes and food and go!! There were a lot of pool toys and floats available also. I would definitely stay here again!!! Also Karen was a dream to work with. Very responsive.

Perfect home in the perfect local

My family (teens and preteens) stayed in August 2016 and loved it! The house is as advertised. Big, beautiful and in an awesome location. Sunrise and sunset from the same deck off the third floor. Wild horses roaming the yard. So convient to have all the chairs, coolers, boogie boards, surf boards, skim boards right here at the house. Load the truck up and drive onto the beach to find your perfect spot for the day. Easiest beach vacation ever!! I had one minor problem with the wifi password (user error) and Karen was so quick to respond. Great house to come together when you want and to hide in one of the many hang out spots when you don't!

Wonderful

My extended family rented Sunnybank in late April 2016. Everybody had a great time and fully enjoyed the home and surrounding beach and dune area. The home is well appointed and comfortable. Very conducive to a family gathering. We found the home to be as advertised and nothing distracted from our enjoyment. Karen was a very gracious and accommodating owner. I had an excellent experience dealing with her. Without question I would recommend the home.

If I could give it zero stars I would. HORRIFIC!

ABSOLUTELY HORRIFYING. Owner greatly misrepresented the property. FILTHY. Scum in showers and cobwebs everywhere. Black mold in all the ice machines. 20 year old K-Mart linens. Views of the beach are greatly misrepresented, blocked entirely by neighboring home that was rented to almost 30 minors who partied all night. Offered to refund our stay and never did even when lawyers were hired. We booked home for family reunion and wish we hadn't. Terrible experience. I didn't even want to sleep in the beds, sand in the sheets and mattresses heavily stained. The AC was completely broken in part of the house and the showers were filthy and wouldn't turn on for part of the stay. Terrible property managers. Renters beware!!

We are country people and most of the year live on a hundred acres in PA raising beautiful, loving Portuguese Water Dog Puppies. pwdpuppies.com

We spend a lot of time outdoors, enjoying the nature's beauty - included but not limited to the woods and ponds in PA, mountains, and the beautiful Carolina shores.

We love Outer Banks and everything that this area has to offer, and I think you will too! We hope you'll take the time to come and enjoy the area beauty in the comfort of one of our beautiful estates.

Let us help you make your summer vacation a memorable one!

Why they chose this property

We love water and the ocean so when we found Sunnybank on 3 oceanfront acres it was perfect, especially because of all the wild horses. Because we do a Friday to Friday change over day we save 5 or 6 hours coming to our house and leaving to go back home to PA instead of wasting it driving in weekend traffic.

Listed as the best place to stay in the Outer Banks:
#1 Carova. Outer Banks, North Carolina Coast, North Carolina, United States.

Location, location, location, Sunnybank is only 3 miles away from several of the most famous historical sites in the Outer Banks. Along with other great attractions.

WHALEHEAD CLUB: Completed in 1925, the sprawling lemon yellow Whale Head in Historic Corolla has served several purposes during its decades of operation, including housing a private school for boys and acting as a rocket fuel-testing base. Today, the Whale Head in Historic Corolla is one of Corolla's best attractions, offering seasonal guided tours, 39 acres of picturesque landscape for picnic baskets, and special facilities for weddings and special events. Seasonally, you'll find a few the area's best events on the premises, like the weekly Wednesday wine festival, where visitors are encouraged to sample North Carolina's best wines and local foods while listening to a little live outdoor music.

COROLLA LIGHTHOUSE: Vacationers with stamina are welcome to trek up the 214 steps to the top of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse for unparalleled 360-degree views of the Outer Banks. The historic and distinctive red lighthouse is open seasonally to visitors from 9a.m. to 5p.m., and the wooded grounds, which include the original light keepers’ home, is idyllic for a bike ride or a stroll through the live oaks. As one of the last testaments to Corolla's early roots as a local seaside community and guardian for sailors travelling past the Outer Banks, the lighthouse is a must on every visitor's list.

What makes this property unique

Getting to see the wild horses and sometimes deer right in your own yard. 2 Hot Tubs, 2 dishwashers, pool and kiddy pool, surf and boogie boards, kayaks, elevator, pet friendly. Climb Currituck Beach Lighthouse.
Crabbing for your dinner to cook in our commercial steamer.
Watch The Sun Set at The Whale Head in Historic Corolla.
Go Boutique Shopping.
Stroll Through Duck Town Park and Boardwalk.
Enjoy Waterfront Fine Dining.
Relax On the Beach

CENTER FOR WILDLIFE EDUCATION: Located in Historic Corolla Park, the center is an impressive and marvelous 22,000 square foot interpretive center for young and old alike to explore the history and vast diversity of North Carolina's wildlife. One of the key displays is a massive living aquatic ephemera of fish, native to the region, housed in an 8,000-gallon aquarium where families can get up close and personal with a rich variety of finned swimmers.
