About this property

A worldwide renowned estate that can be booked for a vacation of a lifetime!

Nestled on a sprawling 28-acre estate, The Old Fort Estate offers luxurious accommodations set amidst the natural beauty of Bequia, blending history and contemporary elegance.

The Old Fort, originally a working sugar plantation dating back to the Middle Ages, has been meticulously restored using original stonework and wood beams in the classic French-Mediterranean mansion-house style. The estate’s expansive grounds feature a variety of fruit trees, palms, and lush gardens, creating a serene atmosphere perfect for relaxation or adventure. For those seeking an active retreat, hiking trails lead down to two unspoiled beaches.

The Sugar House, a sleek and contemporary villa designed by Mustique-based architect Thomas Dehen, is uniquely housed within an ancient circular sugar mill dating back to at least the 18th century. This extraordinary property combines modern luxury with the historical charm of its original structure. The two spacious bedrooms, adorned with bespoke furniture, offer expansive en-suite bathrooms, while the fully equipped mahogany kitchen seamlessly connects to an open-plan living and dining area beneath a magnificent high-arched shingled ceiling. Surrounded by lush tropical grounds and breathtaking ocean views, The Sugar House is an idyllic escape for those seeking a laid-back, nature-infused experience.

Both properties share a grand pool with a shallow children’s area, waterfall, and hidden grotto, along with numerous patios, terraces, and outdoor sitting areas, all offering incredible views of the Grenadine Islands. Guests can also indulge in the custom-built natural pebbled showers, unique round glass and marble sinks, and bespoke hardwood vanities

Host profile image
I grew up in the Grenadines, primarily on Mount Pleasant, Bequia—an intimate hilltop community steeped in history. Centuries ago, The Old Fort stood as the centrepiece of this area during the French colonisation of the Caribbean. As a child, I watched in awe as my parents and their dedicated team restored the ruins, transforming them into the stunning estate you see today. They managed the property for nearly 40 years, instilling in me a deep appreciation for its history and significance.

Growing up in Bequia had its challenges, particularly in education. I studied through an American correspondence course before commuting daily by ferry to neighbouring St. Vincent for my A-levels. After nearly two decades in the Caribbean, I moved to Europe to broaden my horizons, a journey that proved invaluable for my future in hospitality.

At just 18 years old, I began my apprenticeship at the Kempinski Hotel Four Seasons in Munich. I then worked as a full-time F&B waiter at the Hilton Amsterdam, gaining hands-on experience in world-class hospitality. Two years later, I moved to London to complete a degree in International Marketing and Hospitality Management at London Metropolitan University.

After several enriching years abroad, I returned to the Grenadines—the place I will always call home—and became the director of The Old Fort in 2005. This role allowed me to combine my love of travel, instilled during childhood summers spent visiting family in Europe, with my passion for hospitality. The unique experience of growing up on a picturesque island that draws visitors from diverse backgrounds, coupled with my global travels, has shaped me into the host I am today.

The Old Fort is more than just a destination—it’s a reflection of my family’s journey and our commitment to creating unforgettable experiences for our guests. My parents’ travels inspired them to design a place that meets the highest standards of hospitality, and it is my honour to carry on their legacy.

Why they chose this property

The Old Fort Estate is the only fully restored plantation in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and one of the rarest of its kind in the world. Unfortunately, most of these historic estates have fallen into disrepair and abandonment. The property's rich history, combined with its majestic layout on what is considered the grandest estate on the island, makes it truly extraordinary. The sprawling acreage descends down several hillsides to the Atlantic Ocean below, offering breathtaking views at every turn.

Having celebrated my parents’ 46th Christmas Eve on the island in 2024 (the day they arrived), our deep knowledge of the area and its unique offerings is unrivaled. This wealth of experience allows us to provide an exceptional level of service, made possible through the many connections we've established over the years. The estate’s beauty is matched by the numerous reasons to stay here: from the awe-inspiring views, which are arguably the best on the island, to the spacious bedrooms and thoughtfully designed areas throughout the property. The unique way the estate has been rebuilt preserves its character while offering modern comforts. Additional services, such as the opportunity to charter our private 40-foot powerboat, enhance your stay further. And of course, Bequia—one of the Caribbean's most beautiful and unspoiled islands—serves as the perfect setting for this unforgettable experience.

What makes this property unique

This exceptional property offers countless benefits, making it a truly unique retreat. The undisturbed environment provides a rare harmony with nature, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the tranquillity of their surroundings. The stunning views overlooking the estate and the ocean are complemented by an array of hiking trails and two pristine, unspoiled beaches just a short distance away.

The property’s expansive layout features majestic suites nestled in various corners of the estate, ensuring privacy even when travelling with friends or family. We take great pride in our ability to cater to each guest’s specific needs, offering a tailored experience that enhances every stay.

The lush gardens, home to a diverse collection of palms and flowers, further elevate the estate’s charm. The property’s rich history is a standout feature, with archaeologists recently uncovering a new section within the estate grounds. Guests can also enjoy a wide range of nearby attractions and activities, including excursions and boat trips to neighbouring islands, sailing, eco-tours, hiking, and fishing. The possibilities here are truly endless.

Most importantly, our guests are able to experience the authentic local vibe of Bequia, becoming part of the island’s living history and immersing themselves in its unique culture during their stay.
