We loved staying at Jeff’s cabin. We loved the remoteness of his place and yet still not a far drive into town, about 10-15 min. Jeff was a generous host and gave us tons of useful information about the area and things to do. We would definitely recommend staying here!
We arrived at 9:30pm on the agreed-upon day to find the cabin occupied. We texted the owner but did not hear back until after noon the next day, by which time we had been forced to make other lodging plans. He apologized, but too little, too late.
Staying at Jeff's cabin was nothing short but great! It's cozy and rustic—but with a bath, running water, heat, and a kitchen. Perfect to bring kids and get them to enjoy the outdoors when it gets to cold for rent camping. (My 7 and 4 y.o. heard the wolves howl and caught a 30 inch Northern right off the dock.)
Jeff is a great host who accommodates to all your needs. We'll definitely be back!
Very nice cabin. Had everything we needed. We tend to use these as bases and are usually gone most of the day. Clear directions for checking out would be helpful. Had a wonderful stay
We had a wonderful time. The cabin is even more charming and welcoming in person than in the photos. We are almost disappointed we had too many things to do during our time in Ely ... we would have loved to spend more quiet time in the cabin. It was clean and tidy, had everything we could have wanted or needed, and had a very homey feel. Thank you! We will be back!
We had a wonderful time. The cabin is delightfully rustic but well appointed. So we were wanting for nothing and we’re entertained by all the many decorations. My wife and I loved the cabin. Enchanting is a good word.
Jeff, the owner was wonderful. He lives nearby so he is available for questions and help. He gave us a boat tour of the huge lake and allowed us to use a canoe and a small boat with a 15 hp engine. We used the canoe multiple times and caught many different species of fish: pike, perch, blue gill, brook trout. The cabin is about 100 paces from the lake, so fishing is easy to do for just an hour or two, or the entire day.
Jeff has a lovely camp dog too! Honsu is his name. Never barked.
Overall, great stay. Thanks Jeff!
Great location on White Iron Lake. The cabin was quaint. It had everything we needed. Loved Hanzo, Jeff’s dog. Jeff was a wealth knowledge regarding the area.
Not necessarily private as others have stated, as owners home is close, but it is quiet and peaceful. My husband and I and our 10 year old fit perfectly in the small cabin which is beautifully decorated in an old fashioned, pre-technology style.
We loved the boat, fishing off the dock, the fire pit, and exploring Ely!
We really enjoyed our 3 nights at the WIH. Our young dog was occasionally over-distracted by Hanzo, Jeff’s dog, but Hanzo is a very good boy and we all did fine :) lived the water access and location near to Ely and the boundary waters. Will keep in mind for a later visit.
Heritage Haus--the most charming cabin in Minnesota
We loved every single thing about our stay at Heritage Haus! The cabin itself is so charming and comfortable. Beautiful layout for a small cabin, a very comfortable bed and sleeping area, exceedingly well stocked kitchen area, excellent bathroom with shower, and a living area including two small beds that double as sofas. Plenty of nice linens for our stay. Gorgeous art and furnishings consistent with an older, well maintained cabin. There is lots of interesting reading material about the area and its history as well as many maps of the area. The host provided everything we might need for a comfortable stay; he said you only need to bring what you want to eat and drink, that was very accurate! The host is so accommodating, he was available and had lots of information but certainly not intrusive. His dog was a pleasure, especially since we had left ours at home (we flew to Minnesota). Outside there is a fire ring and seating for four as well as two barbecues and plenty of firewood. The cabin is located on the edge of Cold Iron lake, about a 50 foot setback and about a 10 minute drive from downtown Ely. He even offered us a boat ride around the lake when we didn't take advantage of the canoe or the motor boat. We would most definitely choose to stay here in the future!
Jeff is a wealth of knowledge about the area and history. being able to launch our boat from
cabin site was a nice time saving advantage.
amazing property!
We spent three nights here with our dog and felt very much at home in this century-old log cabin with modern facilities and even wi-fi. Jeff did everything to make his guests feel comfortable and welcome, and it was really a fun place to stay. We are campers and the grounds were very much like a nice campsite with tall trees, wildflowers and a fire pit with plenty of wood available. We actually heard more birds in the trees than we ever heard in state park campgrounds. The furniture in the cabin was clean and comfortable, the kitchen had everything you need, and there was plenty of hot water!
This cabin is adorable, cozy and located in a very quiet area - just what we were looking for in our getaway! Jeff (& his dog) were great and even left fresh flowers on the table for us. Thanks so much, Jeff!
Fun stay " up north" in an historic one room log cabin. The cabin is small - I can't imagine 4 people there. Queen bed and two twins (that double as couches) were comfortable with lots of pillows. 2 recliners and a table with 4 chairs. Kitchen and bath are well stocked.
The cabin is full of cool antiques and an eclectic lot of paintings and prints - definitely maximulist in decor.
Jeff was a good host. I would have liked written check-in and check-out instructions but it all worked out.
The cabin is easy to find, but I would suggest arriving in the daylight. We tried to park at the boathouse! Like many MN lake cabins, you have close neighbors. It is not remote. You park right outside the cabin.
We did not use the offered boat, canoe and outside firepit but they looked in good condition.
I would definitely recommend this place.
This cabin is so cute and cozy! Oh how I wish I could stay longer!! Would happily live in this cabin forever lol. Amenities are great, you have everything you'd want or need in there. The bathroom/shower was so nice and warm with a built in heater, hot water, and high pressure. Fireplace is great if you know what you're doing and it was just cool enough for us to enjoy. Jeff and his dog are a hoot :) thanks for having us!
Thanks Jeff. You made our Ely stay memorable, we Aussies appreciate your sense of humour. Your knowledge of the environment where you live is great.
We’d like to thank you and Hanzo for making our stay memorable.
We will return to Ely next year. Hanzo is a beautiful dog.

About the host

Life long Ely recreational resident. Family bought property on White Iron Lake in 1962 and have been privileged to enjoy summers and winter vacations all the years since. No other place in the world I'd rather be. That said, have had a Illinois drivers license since I started driving, and have lived in Evanston Illinois the past 32 years. When am I moving to Ely? It's a process, I'm working on it.
Why they chose this property
Started living on an island. Problem is the winter freeze and spring thaw, hard to operate at those times. When fate allowed this property came my way, it was unimproved, no road, no well, no buildings, but a sweet location with lake and Bear Island River frontage and plenty of acreage. Now that the infrastructure is all there life is good.
What makes this property unique
Heritage Haus was built in the early 1920's by Finnish log builders hewn from tamarack logs fell on site. It was one of several cabins at Burley's Fish Camp Resort a mile or so up the shore. We dismantled, moved, and rebuilt it at the present location. As a youngster I remember getting minnows and night crawlers from the old bait house, and then a cold 7UP at the main lodge from Grandma Burley herself. Heritage Haus has served as a guest cabin for our Heritage Villa next door. It is my favorite place to stay.
