Close to the beautiful mediaeval town of Barga, with its wide away of good restaurants and bars, gelaterias, regular live music, and markets under the stars.

Set in the charming Garfagnana valley, by the country road leading to Barga (2.2km), it is exposed to an enchanting view over the terraced vineyards, olive groves and fruit trees, onto the beautiful Apuane marble mountains beyond.

The stream La Corsonna borders the garden and one can actually walk into the friendly medieval market town of Barga, 20 minutes cross country, across the fields and over the foot bridge on the stream.

This location is ideal for relaxing walks to nearby hamlets and for delightful views of this unspoilt valley. Well suited for day visits to: Lucca, Pisa, Florence, the coast.

Beautiful setting

Great property with three good size bedrooms (one downstairs). Dinning table in the kitchen and a choice of places to sit outside, outside areas have stunning views. The property and grounds need a little TLC, the grounds were a bit overgrown and the property could do with a little bit of money spent on it, in particular in the kitchen and bathrooms. Plus a thorough clean. However, it is a beautiful house in an amazing location

Wonderful stay in Barga..

What a magical place. Beautiful gardens and views, especially from the pool. 2 terraces which were lovely for meal times. You can walk to Barga it's nice but a bit of a trek. A car is a must imho. Check in/out was very easy with Loretta who is lovely and knows the area well. Only slight downside for us is the Kitchen/diner doesn't have the wonderful views and much natural light. Overall we loved the house and will hopefully visit again!

Fantastic converted farmhouse in large terraced grounds

Stunningly located property with multiple terraces to sit out and enjoy open views of forests, mountains and the river. Beautiful pool to cool off after a day relaxing or exploring Barga and the local area. Birdsong in the morning and fireflies in the evening. Lovely agent/owner always ready to help and provide advice on restaurants and local villages to visit. Highly recommended.

Wonderful stay. Stunning location. Wonderful views. Swimming pool looked a lot nicer than in photos. Lot of steps but good exercise. Lovely house - could live there 😍. Met Loretta who too is a lovely lady.

Beautiful location

The views at this property from the terrace, bedrooms and pool are absolutely stunning. Not ideal for elderly/disabled and young children due to distance to parking/road and deep steps around the property. The pool was a good size and surround fauna and flora beautiful. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful. We made some wonderful family memories.

Terrific views and gardens

Lovely views, great garden , very nice hosts. Although there is a half hour, quite steep walk through woods into Barga, it is slightly far off from the town centre to be walking up for dinner every night. But then, if you weren't in the location Santa Maria is in, you wouldn't get the fantastic views!

Spacious farmhouse, with great views. Kitchen a bit dark. Very good pool area. Walk to Barga either along the road for 500m or across a small stream.

Fantastic property in a great location that will surpass your expectations

Great Holiday. We stayed in Loretta and Benitto's wonderful house near Barga in the first week of July 2019. A wonderful property that will not disappoint in anyway. It is set in a fantastic location, with captivating mountain views. A short walk through the valley to the beautiful small town of Barga. The house is well equipped with multiple bathrooms, balconies (to escape of find the sun any time of day), generous sized bedrooms, well equipped kitchen... There is a generous sized pool with fantastic views. The property has an enormous outdoor space to explore and watch the wildlife. Benitto and Loretta are nice people who respond quickly to any queries or requests. I cannot fault the property, the local area or Tuscany in anyway. Tip: avoid walking on the road to get to Barga by crossing the stream at the foot of the property to access a shortcut path to Barga). David and family July 2019

The house & pool & views, and birdsong were all glorious. We caught unseasonably cold damp weather which meant the pool was not used unfortunately. Will be lovely in the summer.

Fantastic location. Peaceful, beautiful and very relaxing. We were lucky enough to be the only people staying for most of the week, which was fantastic for the children as we had the pool area to ourselves on the couple of days that we stayed by the pool. We initially thought there was an issue with the fridge as it wasn't cooling items quick enough, but Loretta was lovely and came by the apartment very concerned. Loretta and her husband are easy to talk to and get along with. We explored so much in the area and the easy to follow guide that Loretta sends you before you arrive, makes it so much easier to decide where to go. The only downside was the apartment is in need of an upgrade, however Loretta did mention whilst we were there that they have plans to combine 2 of the apartments to make a much larger accommodation for families or friends. So when this is completed, this will be perfect for larger groups. Highly recommend.

Lovely apartment close to the beautiful town of Barga

We had a lovely time, walking or driving into Barga each day and having coffee, beer or ice cream in various bars. Everything was excallent value. We also did two day trips to glorious Lucca on the bus. We spent hot afternoons and evenings relaxing by the apartment's lovely swimming pool or on our private balcony. The apartment was lovely, but best not too use a spin speed of over 400 on the washing machine due to intense vibrations. Also note that you CAN walk into Barga across the valley, we were delighted to discover this half way through our stay. It was very hot during our stay and it struck us that additional shade around the swimming pool, over and above the two umbrellas, would be a significant improvement.

Beautiful traditional place to stay

Lovely little apartment in this converted farmhouse, with excellent facilities including the private terrace and the shared swimming pool. Even though the property is next to the main road through the area, it is still quiet and a peaceful place to stay. It is well served with two well furnished bedrooms, and a combined kitchen/dining/living area together with the outside terrace with a table under shade. We had a fantastic week here, enjoying the quiet and cooling off in the swimming pool at the end of a hot days sightseeing. If you want to stay outside of large towns and cities then this place is ideal, you are away from the main areas but close to the lovely town of Barga which has pretty much everything you will need. We also found the owners and locals very friendly and helpful.

Our favourite place in Italy

I am almost reluctant to post a good review as I want to keep this my own secret hideaway. I just love Santa Maria and keep returning most years. The views, the position, being able to walk into Barga, the pool , the grounds, I could go on. The apartments are not immaculate but that's part of its Italian charm. Roll on next year!

We spent a brilliant week in santa maria , it is a nice comfortable apartment with stunning views down the valley and a nice terraced garden and a good sized swimming pool a nice wee scenic walk up into barga either by the river or by the main road (would be advisable to have a wee torch for the night time ) will be booking up for next year was nice to see benitto come down to see if all was okay once again cheers alba gu brath

An idyllic country retreat

We enjoyed our time at Santa Maria so much that we have been there three times and plan to go back. Our hosts, Benito and Loretta, made us very welcome, ensuring that the apartment was clean and well maintained with good services as advertised. The swimming pool is a great asset which we used every day, sometimes several times a day. The apartment is in an idyllic country setting , less than half an hour's walk from the small Tuscan city of Barga, where there is a variety of good restaurants and fantastic old architecture. Almost on the doorstep is a very attractive walk along a river valley and we also enjoyed more adventurous hill-walking in the Alps. Highly recommended.

Great place to relax

We have been coming to Santa Maria for the last seven years ever since my daughters were three and five years old and obviously the charm has not worn off. The main attractions for us are the pool and the ability to walk into Barga whilst not being in the centre of the town. There is an approximately fifteen minute walk across fields of oregano to Barga with it's great restaurants, Cafes and gelaterias (Pasticceria Lucchesi, L'Altana and La Gelateria are some of the best) Alternatively it takes about five minutes to drive. Barga is relatively quiet and as such you don't have to fight your way through crowds of tourists which makes wandering around Barga Vecchia extremely pleasant particularly in the evening when it is so easy to pop into a bar or cafe. On the other hand Lucca is only a short distance away and easily accessed by car or train. The apartment itself has two bedrooms a bathroom, sitting room and a galley kitchen which opens onto a terrace on which you can sit with a glass (or bottle) of chianti and enjoy views over the surrounding mountains and countryside. It is spotlessly clean and the garden terraces and area around the pool are kept neat and tidy and if you time your visit right the sun warmed figs from the tree are amazing. Benito and Loretta (the owners) are extremely personable and helpful, ensuring that you have everything you need for a pleasant and relaxing stay.

Etwas abgelegenes Haus mit wunderschönem Garten, Pool und Ausblick

Wir haben unseren Aufenthalt hier sehr genossen! Der Pool und der Garten waren großartig, auch wenn die Lage des Hauses etwas abgelegener war als vermutet, doch erreicht man mit dem Auto schnell Startpunkte für tolle Wanderungen in den Bergen. Die Mücken haben uns bisweilen das Leben schwer gemacht, auch tagsüber. Für Fußmärsche ins nahegelegene schöne Barga empfehlen wir unbedingt die über einen kleinen Umweg zu erreichende Fußgängerbrücke. Der Weg durch den Fluss war vor allem mit Kindern dann doch sehr abenteuerlich. Die Sauberkeit des Hauses ließ leider sehr zu wünschen übrig. Die Vermieter aber waren ausgesprochen freundlich und hilfsbereit.

I Loved our stay!

Great location, very family friendly home, they even had a smart TV for movies at night! Owners are super awesome, we had a hard time finding the house but they stuck with us until we found it! Thank you so much for a great stay!
