Our 25th Anniversary, Eldest daughter’s engagement and elderly mother’s Jubilee Pilgrimage tarnished by an unsanitary apartment and greedy, absentee host. Our journey was going well when we were picked up promptly by our driver, Fabio. Big smiles and a helping hand guided us swiftly to our awaiting van with plenty of room for us all and our luggage. Our international flight arrived on time at 6:10 am. Our host, Paul was fully aware of our arrival time yet demanded an additional 50 euro to allow us to check in early. This doesn’t sound exceptionally unreasonable besides the fact he would not accept payment thru VRBO and made us download an unfamiliar payment app that needed a bank card and social security number to access and move money. This was unsettling. Eventually after waiting for over an hour on the narrow sidewalk outside on a busy street with all our luggage, we were allowed to access the apartment. The neighbors were not happy with our unannounced arrival and we were admittedly a bit noisy hauling our luggage up to the landing outside the digitally locked outer and inner doors. This feature was actually a welcomed level of security once we were inside. The photos listed on the VRBO app did not accurately depict the apartment and were obviously taken a long time ago when the apartment was fresh and clean. This is not how we found it to be. The photos we attached, as disgusting as they are, still do not accurately depict the conditions.
