About this property

Truly antique Cape Cod house with its own beach on Scargo Lake near bay

A truly 18th century Cape Cod house originally built from ship timbers on Nantucket and floated over by barge to Cape Cod. With its own swimming and boating beach on freshwater Scargo Lake, the setting alone promises a memorable vacation. The property, just under 2 secluded acres, has a 200-foot lakefront with beach, boathouse with bar, kayak, canoe, and Hobie Wave catamaran sailboat. You can in the same day swim in the salt waters of Cape Cod Bay, also in the pristine water of Scargo Lake and still find time to sail around the lake and feed the ducks and swans. Just glance at the reviews below to see why people love to vacation here and often return. Click below for an elaborated description of the house and the Dennis Village area.

The house on Scargo Lake sleeps 6 in 3 air-conditioned bedrooms (an aero bed is provided for additional guests -children and teens love it) and offers a new full kitchen that opens to a charming Revolutionary era dining room with antique furnishings. The fully equipped kitchen has a huge refrigerator, Jennair stove, dishwasher, two sinks and plenty of workspace. All rooms have hardwood floors and quaint wallpaper. There are two bathrooms (one with a tub and one with a new tiled shower). Adjacent to the patio, there is an outdoor shower with hot and cold water The house has a 21st century, central air-conditioned addition: a huge second dining room and living room with four skylights and Italian marble floors with a wall of sliding glass doors that open up to an outdoor deck -a perfect place for a family gathering or barbecue (has a propane gas grill). Cable TV and WiFi are provided as are a washer & dryer and a brand new natural gas furnace and four-heating zones for off-season rentals. The 200' lakefront is ideal for outdoor dining. There is a fire pit at the lakefront where families can gather, make music, watch the moonlight on Scargo Lake, and cook around fire. We use no herbicides or pesticides on the lawn so it is very safe for children and pets. The property also has a two=bedroom genuine Cape
Cod cottage that is also available for rent (ID 324721).

Scargo Lake is famous for being serene and clean. Only sailboats, canoes, etc. are allowed. The lakefront is so quiet that one can often hear beach-goers playing at the public beach on the other side of the lake, half a mile away. Cape Cod Bay beaches (Howes and Corporation) are a 15-20 minute walk (or a 2-minute drive), so one can swim in the bay and rinse off in Scargo Lake’s crystal clear water. Mayflower beach is less than 5 minutes drive away. The lakefront has 3 entrances into the water for swimming, one a sandy beach that is great for children as it is shallow for a considerable distance before the water deepens. The lake is also excellent for sailing, canoeing or kayaking and tenants may use the Hobie Wave Catamaran sailboat, kayak, or canoe (life jackets in the boathouse-mandatory). Bass and trout fishing, including fly-fishing and ice fishing, make the lake a year-round fishing paradise. The boathouse has a bar with bar stools and large windows right on the lake.

The house is located off 6A in Dennis Village, a village unchanged since the 1950s. Although set back from the road and secluded by dense vegetation, the house is easily within walking distance of the village. The property is a short walk (5-15 minutes) from the Cape Playhouse (world famous off-Broadway theater), Cape Cinema ('art' films, not commercial fare), Cape Cod Art Museum (well worth a visit -Cape artists), local restaurants (many excellent, some exceptional) and the center of town (a gazebo). A large shopping mall is a ten-minute drive to Patriot Square. The area also has great hiking and biking trails. The reviews that follow below confirm that people love to vacation at the house on Scargo Lake, as will you.
There is a second, smaller two-bedroom cottage (ID 324721) on the same two-acre property that sleeps six. It is also available for rent for a family that wants to rent both houses at the same time for a larger group of friends and extended family members. Look on the same website at ID 324721.

Great property

We thoroughly enjoyed the grounds and location of this home. The house itself is quirky, but interesting. It had everything we needed for a fun family trip. Verity was easy to communicate with- an excellent host.

Great location, but not well maintained

The location was magnificent, but unfortunately this home is not well maintained. All in all, though, we had a nice stay. Pros: * The location is awesome, close to nice beaches, restaurants and groceries * Scargo Lake is absolutely beautiful and warm * We loved the use of the kayaks * There is plenty of space in the house * the kitchen is well stocked * the beach towels provided were nice * I'll repeat it because it deserves a double shout-out - the location and lake are AMAZING Cons: * House not well maintained: ** many kitchen cupboards don't close ** cupboards throughout the house are full of crap like old cleaning supplies, etc. ** the freezer won't stay closed, so anything in there is never frozen solid and covered with ice due to condensation ** the fridge drawers are falling apart ** the A/C in the bedroom spits out the dustiest smelliest air in your face because it hasn't been cleaned in forever * We received a three and a half page typed (single spaced) letter full of instructions on everything from a request to water her roses (and how) to instructions to turn off the water on the washing machine at the valve on the wall after each use. It was a disturbingly long list of instructions * More instructions were taped all over the house, e.g. only run the dishwasher on heavy cycle lest it not use any water and burn out * the sheets were SUPER thin * the beds weren't made when we arrived; the sheets were left on the beds for us to make our own beds * the yard is NOT well maintained; it is just weeds; virtually no grass left. The lawn company arrived to fertilize while we were there, and he even commented to us that he was just fertilizing weeds, and would recommend a full re-seeding in the fall to the owner * there is tons of old, random lawn furniture and tables littered all over the lawn in no particular order. It kind of looks like a junk yard because of it * the boathouse is completely full of stuff for the lake. It looks nothing like the pictures; more like a storage room. You'd have a LOT of cleaning to do to use it as advertised. * the spare keys were not where the 3 1/2 page letter said they would be; I had to email the owner to locate them (she did respond quickly though) * the property manager nearly walked in on me naked, because she just walked in the house unannounced while I was putting on my bathing suit about two hours after she initially left and we took occupancy.

Thank you Verity!

Our third visit- all in the autumn - when most of the tourists are gone and there is no ninety minute vehicle delay to get across the bridges to the Cape. Beware- several of the upscale restaurants are closed except weekends, so make reservations in advance. It is an historic property so the original part of the house will feel somewhat small, but the updated living/dining areas are huge. A large property and completely secluded from neighbors. We will be back.

WATERSIDE VACATION AT 1/4 OCEANSIDE PRICES

Truly private lakefront with a huge yard and all the amenities you need to get on the lake. No sandy beach but the lake is shallow and rock-free for 20+ feet from the shore so wading and dunking is OK for the kids. After that mind your children because the lake quickly gets deep. No currents or waves on the lake. The house is quaint and very well appointed. The boathouse/bar is a must at dawn. The owner is super!

Truly charming home on Beautiful Lake

We thoroughly enjoyed our time renting this house. It was full of charm. The property is good-sized and private while still being Lake front. The lake is spectacular; clean and clear. The property is centrally located so getting around was a breeze. We had bad weather the first day which caused a power outage throughout town, but the owner was wonderful in letting us know the latest info, where to eat, etc. She was responsive and caring throughout our stay. Will definitely come back to visit!

Serene and private lakefront location

Quaint cape cod cottage on a beautiful private property right on Scargo lake. The house has a beautiful addition that is all windows giving the house a great open and airy feel. Great place for large families to gather. Perfect location close to beaches and Dennis village. The property is stocked with tons of water toys, kayaks, canoes, and even a sail boat. Perfect yard for kids to play all day. Hope to return next summer!

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION… Beautiful Property!

We are 2 families (brother & sister) who come together every other summer to Verity's home. We grew up summers in West Dennis and need to fill our need for our love of the Cape! There are 8 of us, 4 kids (19, 14, 13, and 11 this year) & 4 adults. We have been coming to Verity's for the past 5 years. This is our 3rd visit, and we wouldn't ever go anywhere else! The home has so much history and is true "Cape Cod." The space is truly charming, unique and spacious! The bedrooms are all air conditioned and well stocked with bedding and extra blankets, bath & beach towels! The kitchen has everything you need to cook amazing dinners inside or prepare outside on the gas grill or the charcoal grill down by the boathouse/lake front. The main dining room is huge! The table seats 8-12 and we have enjoyed many meals and played many games here! The family room is also very large with a vaulted ceiling as well. There are sliding glass doors on one whole side of these 2 rooms. There are skylights as well, all making these rooms bright and airy! There is a fabulous air conditioning unit up on the high wall that cools off these large rooms in minutes on a hot summer day. We cannot say enough about the property! The lawn sprawls all the way down to the lakefront. This property has the best access to Scargo Lake by far! The lawn is wide open leading down to the beach area with a boat house that has all you could ever want! The boathouse has electricity, a bar, stools, life jackets, floats, fishing rods, and more. There are 2 kayaks, a canoe, and a fabulous Hobie sailboat! There are plenty of lawn and Adirondack chairs to lounge by the lake front and nice large tables to eat as a family and/or with friends to enjoy all the beauty of this property and Scargo Lake. We never need to leave the property! We keep so busy swimming, boating, floating, playing wiffle ball, frisbee, bocce, and more! When we do leave the property, we head to the beautiful Mayflower and Corporation beaches which are just a quick drive away. We love to eat at Sesuit Harbor, Captain Frosty's, the Scargo Cafe, the Marshside, and more. There is Smugglers ice cream, a candy shop, a donut shack and the Dennis Public Market that has everything you need. The Cape Cod Playhouse is right up the street to walk to and see a fantastic play. We count the months between our visits to Verity's beautiful home and property! We absolutely love it here! We will be back as always! Thank you, Verity!

A week at a very special home.

This was our second year at 919, but our first time in the main house. It was more than special for us. We had a family gathering after my mom's burial in Yarmouth. The kids swam and boated on the lake, the adults gathered on the lawn and there was tons of room to serve luncheon to all. I also held a "paint night" for my cousins, sisters and nieces out on the lawn. My oldest brother had not been back to Dennis in four years. I told him that he would not want to leave Scargo once he arrived! He ended up staying two extra days because he felt so relaxed and part of the Cape Cod of our youth! We will be back again next year! My extended family demands it LOL! Thank You Verity and Teresa for making me feel like family.

Classic Cape Cod retreat with lots of

We truly enjoyed our stay in this wonderful retreat on Scargo Lake. We are a family of 5, with children aged 15, 12, and 9, plus 2 dogs - and all enjoyed everything the property had to offer. We had more than enough space - the house is actually bigger than what it seems based on the pictures online. We loved all the charm of this antique home, and the addition provided extra space for us to lounge and watch television at night. We enjoyed mornings kayaking on the lake and then hit the beach in the afternoons. The home was very well taken care of - clean and the beds were very comfortable - important while on vacation! The owner was pleasant and accommodating. Great location in Dennis Village - enjoyed trips to Eden and Scargo Pottery, as well as a trip up to Provincetown to go whale watching. We recommend getting dinner at the snack bar at Mayflower Beach (lobster roll was delicious) and watching the sunset. We highly recommend this property to anyone visiting the Cape!

Fall on the Cape!

My family and I spent a lovely Columbus Day weekend at this great house. We were a large party so also took the small, charming guest house on the property. The main house is half antique with updated and renovated kitchen and bath and half large great room with big dining table and sofas in front of a large TV. We loved the property - a canoe, kayak and hobie for the lake and a firepit to gather around at night. We also had music to watch the fire to as the boathouse has electricity and it's great to listen to as you watch the fire! To sit and watch the ducks and multiple species of birds cruising on the lake in the morning was magical! And sunset over the lake was amazing - the Cape in the Fall is truly beautiful. The small guest house has a wood burning stove and is cozy and charming with 2 snug bedrooms for 2 of my daughters. The beach is a very short drive or a 15 min. walk and the Dennis market and stores are also only a 5 minute drive. I would highly recommend this property for your next vacation!

Perfect homes for a Wedding Weekend!

We had an amazing time in Verity's two homes right on Scargo Lake. We rented them both as the bride's house for a Wedding weekend that occurred at The Dennis Inn nearby. The houses had everything we could have wanted AND MORE! We loved the boat house with full bar setup and used the kayak and canoe to paddle across the lake and meet some friends. The yard was picturesque and was a perfect setting for our bridal photos! We would definitely recommend this place, especially for a large family or friend gathering.

A perfect Cape getaway

Scargo Lake is a hidden gem on Cape Cod, and this house is a hidden gem on Scargo Lake. We spent a week there in August 2013 with another family, and it was great. The house we stayed in is really two houses fused together, a very old Cape-style cottage and a recent addition with sliding doors and cathedral ceilings. The old part is quaint and cozy, and the new part had plenty of room for big dinners with family and friends. The lake is great for swimming and fishing, and we used the owner’s Hobie cat and canoe. The grounds are beautiful – a day spent reading by the edge of the lake is a great day. We spent our evenings by the fire pit. The location is one of the house’s great features – not only is it on the lake, but it’s just a few minutes’ walk from the Dennis town center, with its Post Office, library and shops, and the Red Pheasant restaurant is just up the street. The salt-water beaches of the bay are nearby, too.

Absolute Winter Wonderland Perfection!

I have been visiting the Cape since I was 6 months old. Sadly, my family no longer owns any Cape properties, so I now rent once or twice a year. In February I rented this amaaaazing property and could not have been more pleased. The house was clean, warm and had all the charm of a true Cape home. The grounds were equally as fabulous as the home. Sooo much character! I enjoyed the snowy yard and the frozen lake as much would have during the warm summer. I truly felt at home, enjoying making breakfasts and dinners in the well supplied kitchen. The beds provided comfortable and cozy rest. Bathrooms were great..big by Cape standards. The house is conveniently located for day trips to local destinations...Hyannis and P Town were a quick drive...even in the snow! The owner of the property is extremely friendly, attentive and accommodating. She made every effort to make sure that I was happy and enjoyed my stay. Overall, I have to give this experience an A++. A grade I seldom feel is earned. I look forward to my return to this lovely home in August.

Perfect spot to enjoy Scargo Lake and good friends

This is a gem of a spot on beautiful Scargo Lake. The lake, beach area and lawn are perfectly gorgeous. The house is very comfortable and the owner Verity is lovely, kind, relaxed and very helpful. There is a canoe and Hobie Cat, both in good order. The lake is among the prettiest on the Cape. You can walk into town center in North Dennis. The bayside beaches are also a walk or quick bike ride away. Two adult couples shared the house comfortably, with kids and guests dropping by all the time. Our dog was welcome and loved it too. We hope to return year after year and give it our highest possible recommendation.

Classic Cape vacation but better

This centrally located older Dennis village house was just a real charming place to stay. The older part was classic with low ceilings, smaller rooms and lots of windows. The newer part provided lots of space and air with a large table to sit around and a nice cable fed plasma TV (no HD). We just loved walking around in it and up to it from the lake (especially at night after a bon fire when it was all lit up.) It had AC in the bedrooms that helped a lot and also a cabled TV in one of the bedrooms. The kitchen was modern and had everything we needed. The dinning room off the ktichen is where we ate our dinners family style and talked endlessly. We're a family of 4 with a14 yr old boy and 13 yr old girl. Both enjoyed the house. Having the lake available with the Hobie Cat made for a nice split between beach and lake fun. We went to Mayflower beach 3 days and didn't get there until 2 or 3 any day spending our mornings hanging out at the house or on the lake sailing. We also had family visit and there was ample space for air matresses with a nice huge one provided by the owner. Having linens service and the 2 bathrooms, 1 with a shower and 1 with a tub, are key and laundry is great to have. An outdoor shower would have been nice after coming back from the beach or lake but other than that it was just a lovely, awesome place to stay. We wish we could have stayed for two weeks.

Great for the Family

We rented this house last summer ('09) and are going back again this year. We have 3 smaller kids and they loved being able to jump in the warm lake any time. We really enjoyed the canoes especially since the lake is so quiet (I didn't see any boats with an engine). The house is old, but in very good shape. The new addition gave us some distance from the bedrooms so the adults could relax at night without disturbing the kids.

Lovely location and charming house!

We came here for a week: two families were quite comfortable in the three bedrooms (I'm glad we brought our own fan, because, without A/C, the house got a bit warm at times). The older part of the house (built in the late 1700s) was charming - with lovely wide board floors, low door frames and cozy rooms. I was happy for the newer addition, which was far enough from the bedrooms that the adults didn't wake the kids at night. The rambling layout did make it harder to watch our toddlers, since they enjoyed running the length of the house. The kitchen was well-stocked with utensils and pots and pans. (We did a lot of cooking and I would recommend bringing your own chopping knives.) But we enjoyed the modern kitchen with its stainless steel countertops and huge refrigerator. The property was gorgeous! Well-maintained and HUGE! The lakefront property is lovely, with a perfect beach for the kids to play on. It is shallow for quite a while and the water was warm. We enjoyed the canoe and digging in the sand. It is advertised as a private lakefront, but we arrived to find a smaller guest house on the property that had been rented as well. It didn't bother us, but it would have been nice to know in advance. We drove to Corporation beach twice (it is not within easy walking distance). And the beach was filled with happy families and beautiful views. There are markets, ice cream shops, antiques and Captain Frosty's within 5 minute drives, as well as a public playground. Overall, we were very pleased with this rental and would definitely stay here again! Thank you, Verity!
