About this property

Unplug, relax and rejeuvenate in our tiny house featuring off-the-grid living

The Space

This 'tiny house' has all the comforts of home contained within a s a 400 sf off the grid mobile cabin on approximately 10 private acres with spectacular mountain views, lavender fields, oak woodlands and a seasonal creek.

Electricity is provided entirely by the sun from a 2k watt solar array with battery for nights and cloudy days. Water (potable) is provided to the tiny house from a private well. The stove, tankless hot water heater and furnace are fueled by propane. There is a window AC unit and ceiling fans (both fueled by the solar system) to keep cool on hotter days.

The full kitchen comes complete with an oven range, coffee pot, toaster, a microwave, blender, a full sized refrigerator, and is stocked with a complete set of pots and pans, knives, cooking utensils, plates, glasses, mugs, wineglasses and flatware etc. The living area and dining nook offer plenty of space for comfortable indoor living.

Outside on the deck you will find a brand new propane grill and outdoor patio table and chairs for outdoor dining along with a hammock for relaxing. A short walk to a clearing with Mountain views you will find 4 Adirondack chairs grouped around a propane fire pit for storytelling and stargazing. Another short walk away is a picnic table and a swing under a majestic oak.

The master bedroom has a queen bed, closets, and cabinets. There is an additional sleeping loft with two twin beds. The sleeping loft ceiling is 4 feet high, so you cannot stand up, but it is high enough for comfortable sleeping.

Take in the mountain views, birdwatch, picnic under the large oak tree, relax in the hammock, star gaze under the Milky Way, chat by the fireside, or skip stones in the seasonal stream within walking distance on the property.

The Surroundings

The home sits on a steep 20 acre parcel with the owner’s main house about a quarter mile up the driveway out of sight and earshot.

We are located about 2.5 miles up Tassajara Road from the Tassajara Road/ Carmel Valley Road intersection, about a 20 minute drive along a winding country road from the quaint Carmel Valley Village with fine dining, cafes, award winning wineries, art galleries, shops, gas, groceries, and other services. Carmel-by-the-Sea and it's beaches is another 25 minutes away (45 minutes total).

Monterey is about a one hour drive away and Andrew Molera State Beach at the north end of Big Sur is about 75 min drive away.

A few miles up Tassajara Road from our property are trailheads to the Los Padres National Forest and the backside of Ventana Wilderness with miles of hiking trails to explore. Further up Tassajara Road (about 14 miles total) is Tassajara Hot Springs. If you would like the adventure of driving a spectacular but very rugged mountain road and soaking in natural Japanese-style hot springs, then consider a day trip in the guest season (April - September). Please visit the San Francisco Zen Center website for more information about this resource. Shuttles are available about a half mile up the road from our gate.

The main home on the property is located about one-eighth of a mile further up the driveway, out of sight and ear shot of the tiny house.

Other Things to Note
Only AT&T wireless service is available at this property. There is no wifi or TV at this time. Parking is available right outside the cabin. Driveway is steep but paved.

Just what we needed

What a wonderful place to stay. Views were amazing, tiny home was so sweet, location was perfect. Enjoyed day trips exploring Big Sur, Carmel By the Sea, Monterey, Carmel Valley Village and then relaxing evenings by the fire pit stargazing and enjoying the peace and quiet. Host was very responsive and tiny home was just as described.

We saw the milky way every night

What a stunning place to stargaze. Lovely home with everything you need. Great property for a stroll. And composting is possible by leaving any food scraps in a pot on the countertop. I couldn't ask for anything else!

Secluded

I love this place! It's in the middle of nowhere. At night you will see the lights of a house faraway on another mountain. You might hear a car on the highway a mile away. Landscape is picturesque. Ideal for someone who wants to read, write, draw, or relax. I hope to return as a yearly internet-detoxing tradition. Tips: 1. arrive during the day. It's easy to miss the driveway in the dark. 2. your gps probably won't work. print directions to everywhere you want to go. 3. arrive with food. the nearest restaurant and market aren't close. 4. the driveway itself is a nice hike. Speaking of which, a previous reviewer complained about the driveway. I don't see what the big deal is. Yeah, it's narrow and windy, but so are the roads you need to take to get here. The long driveway is a gift that adds to the seclusion. Improvements: The host could improve our stay by providing printed directions to nearby spots, such as the market and hot springs.

Unique, Cozy, and Simple

Lovely cottage with simple amenities and plenty of hiking, nature, and solitude to relax in. We stayed with family and everyone was comfortable. Everything worked well off grid on solar and gas. The entrance hill road is totally fine for any car unlike some comment about steep grade. Most of the SF streets are much steeper🙄. Plenty of wildlife and outdoor recreation around the property and in the area. This isn’t for groups who want to be next to stores, social life, and places to eat etc. We cooked our meals fine in a tiny kitchen and went to Carmel, Monterey, Big Sur coast as well.

Get away from it all

This is my third time staying at the Tiny House. Wonderful experience. Clean, comfortable, beautiful views. Got to totally unplug for a week in this beautiful setting. My favorite part was the new Adirondack chairs clustered around a cozy fire pit. You can watch the sunset facing west, then enjoy a fire and the starry sky.

Little House

The house was very cute and very clean and comfortable. The driveway to the house was scary. It was very steep, narrow, curvy with blind spots. Not a driveway my family felt comfortable driving up and down to see the sites of the area. We stayed 2 hours, found other accommodations and left. If we knew about the driveway beforehand with a picture we would not have selected this house and lost our vacation money.

Perfect rejuvenation!

My husband and I, and Uncle Lou, picked up our son from his first year at UCSC. We were all overworked and needed a respite. We hiked, we slept, we played poker, we cooked and ate out on the lovely patio. The house is cute as ever, well stocked with utensils, cookware, and games. The bed I slept in was divine. The only thing wrong was not enough vacation. Thank you Steinmetzs.

Peaceful Little Cabin

it’s not very close to more touristy areas! be prepared to drive. be sure to have what you need going back after a long day of travel. the cabin comfortably houses two people. the loft space because of the low ceiling could only be charming to children. adults would find it to be an inconvenience. the kitchen and living area were spacious and cozy. the outside living space is vast and the landscape is a treat. the sight of it never sours. it was nice to unplug. it was quiet and relaxing. the host was gracious, understanding and available.

A Remarkable Tiny House

High mountain forest, small creek, absolute serenity and quietude, ideal place to unplug from civilization... blue jays, lavender fields, starry nights, the Tiny House is much more spacious than imaginable. No Wi Fi. No TV. No Cell Phone Reception... Let it all go, relax, dream, play, imagine...

Tiny House

House super clean and well-equipped; house tiny but light and airy with vaulted ceiling and many windows in living-dining area. In quiet, forested area but on hillside in bright clearing. Easy communication with owner. Winding, 25-30-minute drive to nearest stores and restaurants (in Carmel Valley Village).

We loved Tiny House!

Beautiful setting. My teenage daughters *loved * this house. It has everything you need (hammock, badminton, tree swing, porch chairs, games!). The kitchen is small but, again, has what you need. No WiFi (as they make clear) but my T-Mobile picked up AT&T signal just fine. The shower water pressure could be better, but that’s probably why we didn’t run out of hot water. And there are lots of uncovered windows, so we all awoke with the light (again, probably a good thing with two teenage daughters!).

Magical Tiny House

Our stay at the tiny house was absolutely wonderful! The house was so comfortable. On the hot days the air conditioning worked really well. The small kitchen was well stocked with cookware. It was just as charming outside as it was indoors. The picnic table, hammock, and adirondack chairs facing the sunset, plus the full night sky of stars with no light pollution, all made for a magical experience. A stag visited us one day. And our dog loved exploring the wide open space. We loved being unplugged & off the grid, remote enough to be totally relaxing. Carmel Valley village is just 30 minutes away and charming. Big Sur is close enough for a day trip. We'll come back for sure, and stay longer this time.

Great remote spot for outdoor movies

I took my best friend here for a weekend bachelor getaway before his wedding next month. We are both movie people so I’ve put together a DIY outdoor theater complete with decent sound system. It was a perfect location to enjoy our favorite movies outdoors without worrying about bothering anyone. It was also a great spot to unplug and unwind so we may relax and mentally prepare ourselves for the main event.
