About this property

Picturesque gite & a recently renovated pool! Great for families and friends!

'La Mirabelle' is a beautifully situated large detached cottage, it is light and bright with high ceilings. It's perfectly located close enough to Bordeaux, Cognac and Angouleme but far enough away to enjoy seclusion with peace and quiet. There is large, recently renovated pool, fitted with an alarm and a generous sun bathing terrace to enjoy. There is a gated garden exclusive for 'La Mirabelle' residents to use, as well as very large open green spaces. La Mirabelle' is located in the charming Charente countryside, looking out over vines and sunflowers, close to a village though secluded and set in the grounds of a former Cognac estate with an elegant French house 'Manoir d'Aulagnes' at its heart.

La Mirabelle is private from the main house and has its own large spaces, garden and the most typically French vista. It has its own parking and gardens. Visit Bordeaux, Cognac and Angouleme with great ease. It's also very close to a number of tranquil swimming lake beaches, a leisure quarry is nearby for jet skiing and it's only 90 minutes to the coast. There are an abundance of outdoor activities, swimming, cycling, horse riding or just enjoy relaxing by the pool, soaking up the sun.

FANTASTIC FOR FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN! Practical safe layout with flexibility. We can provide high chairs for more than one infant if we are given advance notice.

With ALL local village amenities, tourist attractions in easy reach and all roads links to major airports and routes to the ferry ports a comfortable distance drive away, you can enjoy all the convenience of a great French holiday location.

Perfectly placed, only a hop skip and a jump away from restaurants, shopping and the refreshing swimming lake beaches, cycling, tennis, hiking, water parks, sailing, sandy surfing beaches and the flora and fauna filled Gironde estuary. Not forgetting wine and Cognac tasting of course!

There is so much to do for all ages. Paris can be reached in only a 2.5hr train journey for a special brand of shopping day trip or romantic overnight visit. Bordeaux 1hr, Cognac 40mins, Aubetterre Sur Dronne 25mins and Angouleme 30mins away. Also Saint Emillion is only a short scenic 1hr drive away or adventure into the Dordogne 1hr, just take your pick. La Mirabelle is located in an excellent location to enjoy the famous Cognac Houses and the world renowned vineyards of South West France.

If all that sounds like to much hard work you can simply just relax and enjoy the beautiful views here and sunbathe by the pool. We are flanked by lines of vines, on a very quiet country lane, sunflowers either side, perfect for little ones to cycle or skate.

'La Mirabelle' boasts wonderful views punctuated with fields of vivid sunflowers, maize and golden corn. It has a vista that captivates your eyes throughout the seasons and is wonderful to photograph, paint or simply enjoy. We feel that 'La Mirabelle' is an all year round holiday destination. Why not spend Christmas here? La Mirabelle has a pellet burner and under floor heating and we can provide a Christmas tree and all your decorations.

Inside there are thoughtfully, creatively furnished rooms with oak beamed high ceilings and golden limestone feature walls. A fresh open plan kitchen, dining room and lounge. Three bedrooms in total and two bathrooms with recently renovated showers in both, one en-suite and one with a handy utility area. There is one twin bedroom and a double both equally proportioned and sharing a shower room.

The third bedroom is a king size master bedroom and the largest bedroom. The master bedroom has its own spacious en-suite bathroom with large shower and roll top bath. It also has a private door opening onto one of the outdoor terraces, so parents can sneak outside to share a glass of wine and watch the sunset. If you have young or older children, the cottage exclusively offers the safety of two walled gated gardens, one grassed and also a large area of lawn for older children to play freely. The pool and full gardens will be for your exclusive use.

The lovely swimming pool 10m x5m is set away from the principle house 'Manoir d'Aulagnes'. The pool has a safety alarm installed conforming to insurance and for safety and peace of mind. You can sunbathe by the pool or join your children for a swim with ease.

The cottage is extremely well equipped to ensure you are able to enjoy a home away from home. There is outdoor furniture for relaxing and to enjoy that very special brand of French outdoor living and eating. There are some spectacular sunsets to be viewed from the patio.

'La Mirabelle Petite Maison' is a very special French getaway, a holiday with versatility for families, it offers something for everyone.

Wonderful, just wonderful

We wanted to stay forever…. It was pure bliss. Kirsten and Keith went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We incurred a delay in getting to the location but a late check in was no problem. The pool is fabulous and the views of the surrounding landscape are indescribable. Our neighbours were pidgeons, owls, cats and birds of prey. The house has everything you could wish for and we lost count of the number of gardens and terraces we could use. Would whole heartedly recommend and would absolutely love to come and visit again.

Great place to chill out

This is a fantastic place to go if you want to get away from it all and find some peace. We are a family from London with 3 children (5, 10 and 13) and spent 2 weeks in the gite. The setting is beautiful - in the middle of sunflower and corn fields and so peaceful. Very few cars ever pass by and you can spend the day hearing only the wildlife and birds. The pool is lovely and we were in it every day. There's also table tennis, space for games and running around, a trampoline and pool table and table football. It's perfect for a family of our size and age and the kids loved it. The gite is great. Good size and well equipped. The kitchen has a gas hob and oven and most of what you need. We used the charcoal barbecue most days overlooking the fields. All the communication with Keith was brilliant - he was really helpful and answered all my questions quickly and honestly. We had a great holiday and hope to go back. Thank you Keith and Kirsten!

Relaxing and peaceful holiday

We are a family of 4 with 2 daughters, aged 6 & 10. We’ve just returned from a lovely week at La Mirabelle. The gite is very well equipped and nicely furnished. The outside space is great for catching all the sun, with 3 different places to sit; a bbq area for evening sunshine, a picnic table and comfortable garden seats on a gravel terrace, not to mention a huge field to run around in. We used the pool ( shared with the main house guests) games room and the trampoline, we also played badminton and the girls loved the chickens, cats, and blackberry picking. It’s a very sleepy, rural location with lots of country lanes and hamlets, we would have been completely lost without a satnav. Our favourite location was Chateauneuf-sur-Charente which has a beach on the river, kayaking and a nice food truck. Our hosts Olive and Charlie were very welcoming and couldn’t do enough for us. We have returned home thoroughly relaxed and chilled out.

Stunning location

What a beautifully renovated gite which successfully combines every possible mod con with just the right amount of french style and flair. This home from home provides a warm welcome, comfortable furnishings and a choice of terraces for morning coffee and evening barbecues. We would not hesitate to recommend this quiet and peaceful spot.

Perfect family holiday retreat

We are a family of 5. We have three girls aged 16, 14 and 12. My husband and I lead very busy, non-stop lives and so wanted somewhere in the middle of rural France for some peace and tranquillity, with stunning views whilst within easy reach of a village/town/city for some trips out, sightseeing and even a spot of retail therapy for the girls. La Mirabelle ticked all the boxes and then some. The cottage itself is excellently situated with our own private outside areas (large and small) overlooking stunning views of the countryside and equipped with everything you could possible need. The pool is wonderful, (shared with the main house guests) its still very quite and secluded and only a minutes stroll away from the cottage. Our girls loved the play barn where there was table tennis, pool, darts andtable football. We were welcomed on arrival by Charlie and Olive (who were managing the properties for the owner Kerry). They were fabulous! Helpful and friendly and great at Boule! We also meet Kerry and her two gorgeous girls who immediately hit it off with our girls which was an unexpected pleasure. We loved our stay at La Mirabelle we did venture out to Bordeaux, Angouleme, Aubeterre and Blanzac but in truth we were more than content spending the majority of our time enjoying the sights and sounds of what La Mirabelle had to offer. We would highly recommend a visit and hope to be back ourselves. Thank you to Kerry, Hetty, Rosie, Charlie and Olive for a wonderful stay. Tim, Emma, Rosie, Ellie and Georgina xxx

Excellent house, perfect location, first class hosts, value for money.

Kerry and her family have provided a beautiful gite, decorated and finished and maintained to a very high standard. The location is just beautiful - set in rolling farmland set with vines, maize and sunflowers. The nearest villages are only a few minutes drive, with the larger town of Angouleme being about 45 mins away. The region is full of history and charm, with really too many sights to take in during one holiday - and we were there for 3 weeks! Having the excellent swimming pool at the house makes it very tempting to just relax and not move too far, but we managed to visit Angouleme, Bordeaux, Brantome (our favourite), Villebois Lavalette, Lascaux (for the caves - excellent!), St Emilion (beautiful village, even if you're not into wine), St Cesaire (Neanderthal discovery) and Cognac among others. There are lakes to swim in, activity centres for the kids, and countless villages to potter around and sample the local cuisine - and wine. Kerry and her family were extremely helpful with advice on everything the region has to offer. And her younger children became good friends with ours, playing together most days. A perfect holiday, Thank you, Jolliffe family!

Immaculate property with everything you would need for a comfortable stay.

A fantastic property tucked away in a rural location yet near to a supermarket and other amenities. Kerry and her family could not have been more welcoming and helped our holiday run smoothly making us feel extremely relaxed and at ease. The property is to a very high standard with everything you would need for a self catered stay - including a very well equipped kitchen. The swimming pool is great and the large field and private garden meant our small children could explore the area safely (they also loved the swings!). Kerry is on hand to provide advice and useful hints and tips about the area. We really enjoyed visiting Angoulême and the local river beaches of Aubeterre-sur- Dronne and Châteauneuf. In addition the endless fields of sunflowers and vineyards make for beautiful surroundings and the stars at night were amazing! Overall a fantastic holiday!

Paradise in France

We stayed in this wonderful villa from 22.07 to 05.08. We had a fabulous stay. The villa is beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and equipped with everything you would need for a relaxing stay. The villa itself is situated near the top of a small valley offering stunning views across acres of land, plenty of space to roam around and peace and tranquility. We made use of the lovely swimming pool, which was shared by a lovely family from Scotland who were in an adjoining house. We had access to a games room which had darts, pool, table tennis and table top football to keep us amused. The surrounding villages were lovely and all the locals were extremely friendly. If you want to eat out do try 'Le Chateau' Barberzieux. Fantastic food, large portions and very reasonably priced. Supermarkets and bakers are within easy reach. Our host was Kerry who, along with her wonderful children, worked tirelessly to make us feel at home, comfortable and attended to everything we needed. Our eldest son is autistic and is very nervous about going on holiday and meeting people but Kerry and her family engaged him straight away and made him feel safe and welcome...he loved it! We visited Angouleme, which is a lovely town, and Jet skiing is not far away either. Loads to do if you want to explore but having games and a pool is just as good if you need to relax. Thank you Kerry and family for a memorable holiday, one of the best ever.

Perfect place for a holiday

The gite was beautiful and upgraded to a very high standard with everything you could wish for - and more. It is in such a peaceful location with lovely views from every area of the garden and magnificent sunsets as you sipped wine on the patio. With no light pollution the sky was filled with millions of stars and we were lucky enough to see the meteor showers, so a perfect place for star gazers. There were lots of lovely places to visit near by such as Angouleme, Aubeterre, Brantome, Cognac& Jarnac with tours and cognac tastings. We also went on day trips to Bordeaux and La Rochelle. Kerry an LIvvy were really helpful in suggesting places to visit as well as advice on supermarkets and a French evening in Nonac (a must) There is so much to see and do but if you just want to relax by the pool or in the garden then that is perfect too. We would certainly recommend this property if you want a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings and I am sure we will go there again. Thank you Kerry and family for a holiday to remember

Fantastic holiday

One of those rare occasions where you're torn between staying quiet about this gem of a property so that you can keep it to yourself and close friends, versus doing the right thing by the owner and recognising more publicly its brilliance! Just returned from a stay at Kerry's property as a family of 4 with two young children. An absolutely superb location, with achingly pretty views across the fields and countryside. Property is of a very high standard, with fantastic outside space and great pool. Gives you the relaxing sense of wonderful rural idyll, whilst actually being only 5mins or so from the nearest village and another 10 or so from a good sized town with large supermarkets, etc. The icing on the cake is Kerry and her absolutely wonderful family who intrinsically understand when to provide input and guidance on your stay or just stop for a chat, and when to leave you to your peaceful holiday bliss. I couldn't endorse this property highly enough, and will certainly be strongly recommending it to friends and family.

Amazing stay in an amazing location

I can do nothing but praise this delightful cottage. Set in the best of French countryside but still in reach of the shops and transport, the views are breathtaking. The cottage has been fully renovated so you can enjoy the ease of modern appliances but still feel immersed in a piece of classic French rural architecture. Everything we needed was there and Kerry and her family were great. We felt welcome but not intruded upon. The cottage was clean and prepared and we had one of those perfect family breaks where everyone somehow came away feeling equally revived and relaxed. There's much to do nearby too. As an example we visited a local small cognac distillery and after much sampling and a tour came back with a bottle of beautiful brandy. We’ll definitely be back and highly recommend La Mirabelle Petite Maison.

Charming, relaxing property in Bordeaux

We stayed at this property in October 2014, when we still had wonderful weather. The gite was charming, well furnished, clean and well maintained. The views are beautiful and it was incredibly peaceful and a great place to relax. The owner could not do more to help and this is great value for money for the standard and area. Would highly recommend.

Perfect holiday in every way!

Having just returned home from the most perfect two week holiday we can highly recommend this place! The location is simply stunning - waking up each morning to sunflowers, vines and rolling countryside and knowing that each day we could choose from a huge list of places to visit and things to do so easily. The cottage is beautifully decorated and so very well equipped, there was nothing that hadn't been thought of by the owner who has meticulously put together this wonderful holiday home. Kerry and her lovely children were around if needed but not at all intrusive - though our children did enjoy the company of the Jolliffe's in the lovely swimming pool and play area. The cottage is light and airy, fresh and clean - linen and towels provided were immaculate but its the extra touches that won us over along with the eclectic, chic furnishings - Kerry's eye for detail if simply superb! We enjoyed trips to Brantome, La Rochelle, Perigeaux, Angouleme, Aubetterre Sur Dronne, we swam in lakes, rivers and had a great holiday. Thank you Kerry and family!

Beautiful gite, stunning location

We had a fantastic holiday at La Mirabelle. The gite has been converted to a very high standard, was spotlessly clean and is fully equipped for a self catering holiday. Kerry, the owner, lives next door and was on hand to help make our holiday more enjoyable with ideas for days out, places to eat and sights to see. Our children loved playing with Kerry's children in the pool and gardens, which gave us the chance to relax properly too. The location is stunning - surrounded by fields of sunflowers and vineyards with abundant wildlife. If you are looking for great accommodation in a child-friendly and beautifully tranquil location you really should stay here!

Magical spot for a summer holiday with a family

Vineyards, sunflowers, fields, sunshine, lakes and rivers to swim in, beautiful French villages for long summer lunches in the shade. We had a magical week exploring the area and then relaxing around the pool in the afternoon surrounded by magnificent rural views and retiring to the beautiful cool comfort of a tasteful and stylish gite ... everything you could wish for from a French summer holiday for a family of four with a very welcoming, helpful and happy ambiance. We Have recommended this super haven to many of our friends.

About the host

Hosted by Keith Hillier

Host profile image
We're Keith & Kirsten and we're both born and bred in Yorkshire. We met in London through work and the rest as they say, is history!

After initially wanting to buy and run a ski chalet, we had a rethink and started looking at Chateaux and Manoirs all over the south of France.

We came across this property at the start of a full week of viewings and fell in love immediately. Purchasing the property wasn't at all straight forward, with Covid 19 adding to the complications we only arrived in July 2020 and we launched into a week of intensive cleaning and gardening to return the place to the standard we expect to provide. There's still improvements we're hoping to make to bring it up to spec but it's a beautiful place and we don't want to lose its character.

In the course of the next 12 months we plan to prepare the place to utilise the beautiful large barn which has been prepared for the possibility of hosting events and weddings. There is also a large gravel, walled courtyard for 100 plus guests to dine outside or there are large areas of grass with spectacular views that would provide a perfect setting for a marquee. It's also equally possible to host a more intimate event using the smaller open barns if you're not looking to invite the world and his brother.

We might still be new to the area but so far we've found the locals and the French in general to be some of the most helpful and accommodating people we've ever met. We haven't had one moment of regret and if anyone is considering a new life abroad, we would urge you to follow your dreams like we did!

Why they chose this property

We chose the property 'Aulagnes' because of its location, beauty and business potential. It is a very special place that encapsulates all that we imagined to be typically French. Rolling vine filled fields and yet the beautiful Atlantic coast and beaches are only about an hour and half away. Plenty to do and see with so many options. Outdoor life, sun filled days and a unique quality of life. A place that feels homely, safe and inspiring, a place to share and to make new memories.
'La Mirabelle Petite Maison' enables us to extend a warm welcome to our visitors and provides a wonderful place for guests to stay and enjoy all that the pretty Charente has to offer.

What makes this property unique

'La Mirabelle Petite Maison' has a historically beautiful allure resting amongst vines, sunflowers and open countryside like a Monet painting. It is a very special destination for holiday makers especially FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN. With a pool protected by an alarm and plenty of areas for children to play, it's a safe environment. It's very simple to get to a number of towns and big cities, it's an excellent location.
It is also perfect as a location for weddings and family celebrations in our large oak vaulted barn or outside with the vines as your back drop.
