We have always maintained a clean, sanitized and allergy-free rental. For your safety, we continue to use CDC recommended products to kill bacteria and viruses. The floors are sanitized (steam heat) & all of the cloth furniture is sprayed with bacteria & virus killers made for soft surfaces. All of our products are allergy free because they biodegrade within 15 minutes so there is no danger to you or yours.

WHAT TO DO and WHERE TO EAT:
Joe is a Captain and runs a business called Rocky Coast Cruises.
Check out his websitewww.rockycoastcruises.com to see photos and tours that he offers. Casco Bay is a beautiful area with a rich history, breathtaking scenery and abundant nature. If you stay at "Drifting In" you can choose to go on a complimentary cruise for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. If you'd like a longer cruise, it's $125/hour for the boat with a maximum of 6 people. You may bring your own food and drink because charter insurance will not allow us to provide food.

On another note, Harpswell is a perfect place for safe distancing. There are many choices for beaches; Cedar Beach, Stovers Beach, Potts Point Preserve, Mitchell Field Beach, Lands End Beach, as well as numerous trails with many along the ocean with incredible views. Information on these are left for you to peruse on your vacation.

Additionally, you can enjoy fresh seafood meals from Erica's or Holbrook's Lobster Wharf at Cundy's Harbor (both are BYOB and outdoors). The Dolphin Restaurant has take out so you can bring the food back to enjoy Al fresco meal on your large deck at "Drifting In" or eat at the many outdoor tables provided. Many of the restaurants in Brunswick (Enoteca on Maine Street is our favorite) and Freeport also have take out & eat-in or eat outside options. Our favorite in Freeport is the Tuscan Brick oven Bistro. Harpswell has a new restaurant by our only light in town, the Schoolhouse 1913. It is completely renovated and beautifully finished.

H2O Outfitters rents kayaks and gives tours via kayak. You can call them at 207-833-5257 to prearrange your choice of trip or rental. Seeing Harpswell from the water is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY:

Air conditioning and heat are easily accessible and controlled by you with a remote to assure comfort every day of your stay.

As you will see when you travel down the peninsula that reaches far into Casco Bay, there are ocean views everywhere you look. This newly renovated 2 bedroom (1 bedroom on 1st floor and 1 bedroom in spacious loft), 1 bath home gives you a true Maine experience. You will overlook the Cribstone Bridge, a National Historic Monument, and the only of its kind in the world! Built with massive granite blocks which allow the tides to move freely through the bridge. The views of the islands and waters of Casco Bay make the trip down Harpswell Neck, with 216 miles of coastline, the memory of a lifetime. Harpswell has incredible hiking trails through pristine woods; many with sweeping ocean views.

Drifting In is located above the garage and the owners live on the property in a different building. This is a true home away from home with a full-sized kitchen with dishwasher, an island for chatting while cooking, a lovely bath/shower with a rain shower head, an enormous porch and plenty of room inside if it rains. The Drifting Inn was even cuter in reality than it looks in the pictures! It was also a cozy and easy place to stay for 10 days, with a full (and fully-equipped) kitchen, large private bedroom, and great loft with a second bed, desk, and cozy chairs. We loved the location, just a 7 minute walk from the beach, an easy walk, bike, or drive to a variety of lobster shacks, trail heads, and just 20 minutes from the friends we were visiting in Brunswick and Bath. Joe and Lynn were amazing hosts and gave us fun local tips that really enhanced our trip. We'd happily stay here again.

Absolutely beautiful and Joe and Lynn were very responsive. There was everything you need and more. They had cheese and crackers, a bottle of wine, fruit, coffee, creamer, and two coasters for souvenirs. It was our first stop on our road trip of Maine and was our favorite place we stayed. Will definitely be going back to stay. Thank you again for your hospitality.

Highly Recommend

We chose this property for our first trip to Maine and our honeymoon. We were amazed by all the property had to offer and it looked even more beautiful in person! Plus, the bed was unbelievably comfortable. The hosts were easy to communicate with and it was clear that they valued our experience. The hosts left us personalized goodies and took us on a complimentary boat tour. We have never had such a good rental experience. Thank you!

Comfy apartment, short walk to beach area

The apartment is situated above the garage of the owners. It was perfect for me as a single, comfortable bed, nice shower. A deck with a grill. Owners provide made in Maine amenities, I will definitely rebook for next summer.

Treated like royalty.

The hosts, Lynn and Capt. Joe, treated us like we were special. However, I bet they make ALL their guest feel that way. The house was spotlessly clean. We were greeted with beer, wine and cheese upon arrival, and the fridge had everything we might want for breakfast the next day. Capt Joe and Lynn took us out for a boat tour of the area, and since it was my wife's birthday, they bought her a dozen roses. We felt we had left good friends behind when we left for home. Awesome stay.

Drifting In Stay

We had a wonderful stay with gracious hospitality, in an amazing accommodation! Joe and Lynn thought of everything one might need to accommodate us during our stay. The steps up were a challenge for older joints but so very worth the effort enhanced by views of the cribstone bridge and lovely oceanside decor!

Private, cozy, perfect escape!

Our hosts, Joe and Lynn, were extremely helpful in filling us in on places of interest in Maine that we were not aware of (Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and the Maine Maritime Museum for a start!). Communication was excellent prior, during, and afterwards, plus all the privacy you could ask for. There is wi-fi at your fingertips and wonderful welcome treats of wine, cheese, local maple syrup, IPA beer, and essentials of eggs, milk, and butter . There are all the beach essentials you might need to spend a day on the beach as well. They did not forget anything! Did I mention it was really clean and the bed was amazingly comfortable? Don’t miss this chance to relax and explore Maine in this wonderful place. We would recommend this to everyone and would return without a question. Thank you Joe and Lynn!!

Wonderful Stay with Fantastic Hosts

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary with a 1 week stay at Lynn and Joe's rental. Every bit of it was perfect. The location was quiet, peaceful and relaxing. Yet, within about 30 minutes of a number of places (Bath, Bailey Island, Brunswick, Freeport) to visit for sights, history, or trails and beach. Of course, the lobster and fresh fish were excellent. But, Lynn and Joe's hospitality and kind touches to welcome their visitors is beyond any rentals we have ever stayed in. The cruise that Joe provided was so nice - informative, beautiful and relaxing. The welcome gifts of food is really nice when coming in from a distance without time to get to the store before checking in. So many good places to eat, close by, or short drives. Even though you stay above the garage, there is no noise. A good number of stairs to be aware that you need to use to enter, but that should be no surprise, as you know you are staying on the top level of the building. The week was one that we will always remember with nothing but great thoughts about Joe and Lynn's rental, and that area of Maine. Thanks so much, Joe and Lynn!

Delighted with Drifting In

We were delighted with Drifting In as soon as we walked through the door. Everything is clean, comfortable, exceptionally well maintained, and uniquely decorated. We were immediately impressed by the attention to detail and decorative skill that went into each room. There is complete privacy at Drifting In. It is a single rental facility, located above a detached garage. Lynn and Joe live in their house next door. They are a delightful couple and attentive hosts. A special highlight included in our stay was Joe’s one-and-a-half-hour boat tour around the neighboring islands. If you really want to appreciate the Maine coast, you need to see it by boat and not just on the land. The location is excellent. It is near the end of Rte. 123. When you go out of the driveway and turn right you will have an ocean side bench seat within three hundred feet with a view across the bay toward the Cribstone Bridge (only one of its kind in the world). When you go left, you can walk the road for a half mile and be at Stover’s Point Reserve beach overlooking the harbor. There are many other preserves with walking trails. We liked this Rte. 123 side of Harpswell since it is more rural than the Rte. 24 peninsula across the bay, also part of Harpswell, which is more heavily developed. Brunswick is only a twenty-five-minute drive on Rte123 for groceries, visiting Bowdoin College, museums, restaurants, AMTRACK, and the Maine State Music Theatre. John & Debbie

Great place & great hosts!

Lynn and Joe have an absolutely beautiful guest house in an absolutely beautiful corner of the world. They went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, answer questions about local events and history, and the guest house lacked nothing. As an amateur gardener, I was also impressed with the wonderful plantings around the property, and the amazing meadow that they created. We (all three of us) would love to come back again.

AWESOME PLACE, EXTREMELY CLEAN, GREAT LOCATION, GREAT HOSTS

This is an awesome place! Lynn has set this up so very nice. Her decorating touches are amazing. Her attention to detail with everything you need in the kitchen to the very nice quality sheets, towels, bath/shower supplies is amazing. She thought of everything - she left us wine, beer, cheese, crackers, eggs, pancake mix, milk, creamer, coffee, sugar, Maine syrup and Maine blueberry jam - everything we needed to kick back and enjoy our first afternoon and also our first morning. The location is great - the water with a deck is a very short walk (couple houses) and the beautiful beach is a short walk the other direction. We received many tips from Lynn and Joe about the area and places to eat and hike and sightsee. They are really wonderful hosts. Even though the apartment is over their garage, it feels very private and comes with a designated parking space so no one is anyone's way. There is also a deck off the apartment with chairs and table and gas grill that is private. The kitchen is literally equipped with everything you need - including nice spices . I can't say enough nice things about Lynn and Joe's place. We were there in late fall so didn't use any of the summer things that they have available (beach chairs, wagon, cooler). Lynn thought of everything! Even though we were there at the end of the season, Captain Joe still took us out on his great 27 foot Albin boat for a cruise. He picked a great day and we had a great time.

Our stay at Drifting Inn

Lynn and Joe were wonderful hosts and are very thoughtful. The house was immaculate, and every little thing was thought of from the breakfast food in the fridge to the toothpaste and toothbrushes in the bathroom. All the beach amenities (chairs, umbrella, towels even a wagon to carry them to the beach) were there for our convenience. There were many restaurants, a small grocery store, an ice cream shop and some art/pottery galleries close to where we stayed. Also a plethora of hiking spots. Joe took us for a boat ride around Casco Bay in his boat and told us a lot about the history of the area. We truly enjoyed our stay and would recommend Drifting Inn wholeheartedly! About the host

Hosted by Lynn and Joe Smith

Host profile image
We have been life-long teachers who traveled the world working for the Department of Defense Education Activity. We've lived in many countries to include Bermuda, Iceland, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Germany (Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden) and Abu Dhabi. We lived on our 42 foot trawler for 7 years. We continue our boating traditions in Maine. Joe is a US Coast Guard certified charter captain and he takes people out on tours. Any of our guests who have booked 4 or more days at Drifting In, get a free 1-1.5 hour cruise aboard our 27' Albin trawler. We'll arrange dates when you arrive based on weather and schedules. We are now happily back in Maine as retirees to be closer to our families. We love meeting new people and invite you to see what Harpswell offers for you and yours.

Why they chose this property

We bought our home because we wanted to live by the ocean in a town that had a vital boating and fishing community spirit. Harpswell is that town. This is a fishing community that encompasses active lobster, scallop, clam, mussel and seaweed fishing and farming. The many nooks and crannies along the towns 220 mile coastline provide a variety of small communities with their own special flavor. We love the view, the people and the incredible sense of community in Harpswell.

What makes this property unique

If you love the ocean and the freshest seafood, you cannot beat this area. The seafood is literally taken right from the water to the table. Our lodging is a newly renovated to retain the rustic charm of the original, but updated with new granite counters, bathroom and kitchen fixtures and all new lights. The expansive porch provides cool breezes and lovely views of Harpswell Sound. There are countless hiking and walking trails nearby as part of the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust that highlight the pristine beauty of Harpswell.

Since the 220 miles of Harpswell coastline is the very best way to appreciate the full beauty of Harpswell, we offer our guests who book 4 or more days a free 1 to 1.5 hour boat ride on our 27' Albin trawler, La Bella Vita, that can be customized to fit your wants and needs. Since Joe received his US Coast Guard captains license, he must follow the regulations for cleanliness, so this is as safe as the apartment. Further, he is not allowed to provide food or drink of any kind. He does have a generous cooler and ice for you to use. We also provide our guests with a rolling cooler in the pantry closet. If you would like to eat or drink on your boat trip, you will have to bring your own beverages and food. We provide a cooler. This requirement is imposed by our insurance company and my dreams of providing guests with food on the charter were dashed.
