About this property

A comfortable stay on a sustainable family farm

When visiting our farm, you may get the opportunity to: frolic with goats, watch baby animals being born, feed the pigs, learn about natural fiber, walk through the flower fields, go for a mushroom hike, snuggle doggies, eat fresh garden veggies, sit by a campfire, and so much more!
Stay in comfort and quiet in our newly constructed "country chic" barn loft which includes a full kitchen, spacious bedroom, full bath, all basked in warm natural light from the south-facing windows. Explore and learn on our farm or easily travel to many of Humboldt's spectacular attractions.
The barn loft is up a short staircase and very well insulated from farming operations. Reclaimed old-growth wooden details frame the country charm, combined with modern amenities. Heated by a thermostat regulated pellet stove and cooled by a big ceiling fan. Cook your breakfast on the fully restored 1930's Spark gas stove using fresh organic produce and eggs available seasonally for purchase from our farm. The master bedroom sits just off the living room and is equipped with a queen-sized bed and 2 pull out single beds. The couch in the living room also opens into a queen bed. High-speed Wifi is available and T.V. entertainment is located in the office nook. Situated on the north side of the barn, there is a spacious outdoor setting where you can lounge in the sun, climb tree stumps, greet our animals, enjoy a campfire, and take in the scenery. Take a self-guided stroll around the property or make an appointment for a detail tour and introduction to our working farm.

Lovely farm stay!

We had a wonderful time - milking goats, learning about the animals, and exploring the surrounding areas. Sarah could not be a better host! Thank you so much - kids said best vacation stay ever!

Lovely farm loft

This is a lovely place to stay if you want to spend some time on a small farm. The loft itself is really nice, and the host is very helpful and sweet. We loved getting to meet the animals and to just get away for a few days.

Cozy place to unwind and explore the Redwoods!

We loved our stay at the Brunner Family Farm! Even though our stay was limited and mostly spent exploring the Redwoods and Fern Canyon, my girls still say their favorite part was “sleeping at the farm” and playing with their kitties! Wish we had a few more days just to stay on the farm and explore, so we will have to come back!

So cozy

We loved staying at this property. Our kids couldn’t wait to get home from hiking to hang with the animals at the farm. Sarah was a wonderful host and gave us a farm tour that we loved. I loved walking past the flower section of the barn every time we left or came home. Our stay was truly dreamy and the loft was so cozy. Highly recommend!

Time spend on the farm!

We had a wonderfull time at the farm. My grandkids loved to spend time with the animals and Sarah was kind enough to teach them how to milk the goats. Thank you Sarah. We had a great time and thank you for your hospitality

Great stay

We enjoyed our stay at this cozy apartment over the barn. Our kids loved seeing the animals (especially the cats). The apartment was spotlessly clean and kitchen was well supplied with plates, tea kettle etc. Just be aware- no dishwasher or microwave. Location worked well for trips to hike in the state/national parks.

Simply amazing!

If our daughter was writing this review, it would consist of one word: GOAT. Greatest Of All Time. Yes, absolutely. (But also the animal…) What an amazing stay! Sarah and Matt have created a beautiful and welcoming space in their barn loft and on their family farm. The farm itself and the surrounding areas are quite scenic. The loft is very cozy and well stocked with everything you need. Kids will LOVE being near the farm animals, and if they can help with evening chores, it’s a magical experience. We definitely plan to return for another fabulous stay (and to satisfy our growing goat obsession!).

Life as it should be

The loft was modern, clean and cozy. The owners run a family farm and while we did not come for that, we were pleasantly surprised by the small-farm feel of the property and being a part of it. Everyone should experience the way a smaller farm property can be operated at a family level to be self sufficient and sustainable. The owners were attentive and willing to share their knowledge of the property and surroundings. I would love to come back with kids or grandkids solely to give them this experience. The Fieldbrook area is truly a hidden gem. Quaint with a local feel, free from large-scale tourism and pass-thru traffic. Thank you Sarah and Matt!

Pure magic!

From the moment we pulled into the driveway our stay was pure magic. Sarah and Matt’s farm is quaint and whimsical and the loft is an extension of that whimsy. The loft is very comfortable, quiet and well equipped. The only noise you hear are the enchanting goat bells and ducks - which we loved! Between the venue and our host’s gracious hospitality, we didn’t want to leave; are stay was not long enough! We are already planning our next trip. PS…we’re very sorry for forgetting to close the gate when we left!

Perfect Location, Wonderful Hosts

We cannot put into words how wonderful our stay was. The farm itself is a wonderful setting to relax and explore after a long day of hiking. Our kids loved walking around every night and visiting the animals! It was so peaceful. The barn loft is done to perfection. You could tell so much love and thought was put into every detail. Matt and Sarah were so welcoming and really made us feel at home. This is by far the best place we have ever stayed while on vacation and we can’t wait to come back. We could never thank Sarah and Matt enough for opening their farm to us and allowing us to make ever lasting family memories!

Farm stay in a beautiful place!

Great Experience

The loft above the barn was great. There was zero barn smells in the loft. The air was fresh and clean. Other than a few barking dogs (I have those in my neighborhood at home) the night was silent...no sheep or goat noise! The communication through VRBO to the host was a little difficult...no fault of the host.

Loved the Farm Stay!

We booked this because of the adorable animals:) My 10 year old ate it up and would rather spend the days with the goats than hike the redwoods. It was clean, updated, beautiful. The host was awesome and personable.

Nice family vacation to the redwoods

The farm was a really fun experience for the kids and the apartment above the barn was just like described - but nicer than I expected. The hosts are super nice and let our kids get close to the animals. If I could think of a complaint it would be the noises from the dogs at night, but it really wasn’t an issue for us. The rental had everything we needed. Especially given the price, this was an awesome option for the area.

Relaxing retreat

We spent our 45th anniversary here - enjoying being on a farm, having a beautiful retreat in the loft of the barn to relax and read and cook, and close to do explorations that included seeing elk, hiking the Fern Canyon in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, visiting Agate Beach in Patrick Points State Park and walking the streets of Eureka on a self guided architecture tour. Sara and Matt were wonderful hosts. Loved watching Sara milk the goats. Such an incredible experience. They are open for you just to observe or invite you to learn more about the ins and outs of a farm. We now know our "go-to" place when we want to get away.

About the host

Hosted by Sarah J Brunner

Host profile image
Hello, my name is Sarah and my husband Matt and I have enjoyed living in Humboldt County for over 20 years. We are currently raising our 2 young children on our organic farm in Fieldbrook, while Matt also works at Cal Poly Humboldt (formerly Humboldt State University). Matt and I originally moved to Arcata to attend the university, but stayed long after graduating because of our love for the local culture, environmental beauty, and the creative and friendly people of Humboldt County. Matt is an accomplished musician with a strong passion for acoustic old time country and bluegrass. He's a member of the beloved "Striped Pig String Band" who regularly organize and play for barn dances all over the county. While staying with us, you may occasionally hear him playing his fiddle on the porch. As a student at HSU, I focussed my studies on sustainable agriculture and have applied all I learned and more to developing our little organic farm. For years I was involved in managing some of our local farmers markets, but now my time is entirely balanced between growing/marketing our products and being a full time mom! Down time is rare, but when it rains I also enjoy crafting, baking, and knitting. We all love enjoying the natural beauty of our county. Matt surfs at many of the local wild and challenging surf breaks, we often camp and hike in the summer, and sometimes make it up to the snowy mountains in the winter. But our favorite place is always back at home!

Why they chose this property

Our farm and community are the real deal. This is not a tv ready, pimped and primped, over manicured, high end spa resort in farmers clothing. We are a true working family farm with grit in our teeth and dirt under our fingernails. We produce quality produce, cut flowers, and fiber products for sale and it's our passion and livelihood. That being said, we do also have high standards for providing a high quality experience for our guests with a clean and well equipped accommodation, access to hands on farm experiences, and being available for local information and assistance. We LOVE to host. We love meeting and chatting with our guests and sharing in what we do here. We are happy to make time to give you a tour of the farm or give you all the privacy you want to explore on your own. Just let us know what you need and we're happy to oblige.

What makes this property unique

Where else can you stay where you can enjoy fresh eggs from the nest to the table, pet a goat on your way to the car, walk to local wine tasting, or take a quick drive to hike the tallest trees in the world? We know you'll have a great time on our farm while visiting Humboldt County.
