Welcome to Westwood, a very private mountain getaway about a mile outside of Thomas, WV in the historic area of Coketon, WV. Perched a mile above the Blackwater Canyon, on two plus acres, it also borders the Western Pocahontas property, some 68,000 acres of Wild West Va. A very private location adds to the aesthetics all while being close to the Thomas town center. The 2 1/2 bedroom, 2 full bath house sleeps up to eight people and has a great deck overlooking the "Moors" as well as a front porch overlooking Snyder Run. Hiking, Biking, Cross country skiing are just a few of the activities available from one of the best locations in the area. The Blackwater Canyon Trail is at the bottom of the hill, go right to Douglas Falls and left 3/4 mile into Thomas. If you are a Mt. Top Hunting Club member, hunting ,fishing and ATV enthusiast have it all at your backdoor, with miles of trails right off the property.

Perfect weekend getaway!

The property is close to major attractions but away from town. It's the last house on a dead-end street with only one other home. Note: the neighbors have two off-leash labs that came to the property daily. Be mindful if your dog is also off-leash. I was not concerned they would bite or attack, but they barked a lot when out. It was quiet (when neighbor dogs weren't out) and secluded. The place was nicer than the pictures. The kitchen was stocked (just bring cooking oil or butter). I would stay here again if I were visiting. Bring tissues and soap/toiletries.

Awesome location. Close to town. Yet a nice country view. Place was very clean and on par with what we expected. The only issue is the steps and deck weren't shoveled. Other than that I would highly recommend staying here. A wonderful place!

Family fun

If you're looking for a very cozy and clean place to stay this is it. Very comfortable for six people and the location was amazing. Very much enjoyed our stay and looking forward to staying there again.

Beware!!! Impassable road in snowy conditions

#1 - Nowhere in property description did owner mention the virtual inaccessibility of this property in wintry conditions. Four wheel drive vehicle is the only way to reach the house given the steep winding road. As a result, most of our single free day in the area involved finding a tow truck to wench out of deep snow one of our vehicles. Owner’s negligence further manifested in treacherous snow covered stairs leading to property. At least, they had a flimsy plastic snow shovel available which was used to clear the compacted snow and ice while we awaited the tow truck. (Would have preferred hiking in nearby state parks, but oh well.) #2 - Despite their obligatory $100 cleaning fee, this house was the dirtiest property experienced across decades of renting through VRBO: moldy showers, dust covered heating vents, dust clinging to walls, filthy oven, etc.

Gorgeous location

Westwood property was located in a pristine corner close to the hiking trail which we caught to get to Douglas falls. The property was really clean, spacious, with a well stocked kitchen. It is so close to black water state falls park, Canaan valley resort . We are looking forward to coming back again.

West Virginia Mountains

We went to enjoy fall color in WV. Westwood is a beautiful home. Saw lots of deer and there were many spots around the house to sit and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. I would love to return to this wonderful place!

The property was outstanding. So beautiful. There was an apple tree which was a big hit with the Deer. A very cute town with some shopping and a few places for dinner. The house was old and needs some updates however very clean and well stocked.

Loved our stay

We took a somewhat spontaneous trip to this house. We've rented in the area many times, but we really loved how comfortable the house was and the location. We took our pups and really, really appreciate the house being dog friendly. We will be back soon. This is our new pick for our trips to this area.

An Idyllic Retreat

This house is charming, well spaced and comfortable, with all the necessary amenities. If you look for peace and quiet- yet close to all main state parks trails and attractions - this is it. The nearby little towns of Thomas and Davis were a pleasant surprise with so many good cafes, restaurants, farmers market and gift shops. We had a wonderful time and recharged.

Nice Secluded Property

The property is functional and well maintained for an older cabin (all idiosyncrasies were to be expected). The lack of AC is normally a non-issue for the Davis area, we just happened to visit during a heat dome event, making the afternoons a little hot on the 2nd floor. The eclectic CD collection and vintage Bose stereo added to the experience. The hike down old dirt road into the national forest is easy to follow and not difficult. Would recommend for couples and families with children.

Two night getaway

We were looking for a quiet place near hiking and biking. Westwood was perfect - quiet, only birds heard as we sat on the shaded deck in the morning and evening; and an easy walk into Thomas or to Douglas Falls with Blackwater a short ride away. The house was spotlessly clean with helpful supplies and good strong showers to wash away hiking dirt at the end of the day. We had a lovely interlude and would happily return. Temps about 15 degrees cooler than the heatwave in DC.

Great location

My husband and I wanted to visit the Blackwater State Park area. We needed a dog friendly rental that would not break the bank, but still be nice and comfortable. Rex’s house fit the bill nicely. Unfortunately, my plans had to change, so my husband was the only visitor. His reports to me: everything was as pictured and described. He would have liked a firmer bed, but he likes a slab of concrete. Normal people will most likely be satisfied. The kitchen was well supplied and equipped to make the simple meals I had set up for him. He found the internet connection lacking, but what can you expect in a location like this? The only real issue was we expressly wanted to be alone and quiet. Apparently, there is an end of the road where people access the woods at the edge of the property. Pickup trucks and people with flashlights were out there the first night, upsetting my husband. We contacted Rex, who did respond quickly with explanations. Otherwise, my husband had a great base of operations to explore the parks and scenery.

Perfect Pet Friendly Cabin

Cozy cabin, well appointed with plenty of blankets, kitchen ware, appliances, dog bowls, coverings on furniture for dogs and bath towels. Fun stay with plenty going on in the town of Thomas as well as Davis. Definitely recommend!

Girls Trip!

Five of us ladies who have been friends for over 30 years visited Westwood 2/23-2/26 2024. We had a fantastic time! The house was great for our size group and was full of amenities. The kitchen was completely stocked with dishes and cookware along with other items like spices/salt/pepper and things of that nature. The beds were comfy and the wifi worked great. Checking in and out was a breeze and the few questions we had prior to the trip, Rex answered almost instantly. The home was absolutely spotless from top to bottom as well. The only thing that could make it better is a hot tub on the back deck ;). The location is close to everything yet very private and quiet. We had a marvelous time and would absolutely stay here again!

Michelle and Rex Phares live in Elkins, WV, about a 40 minute drive from Westwood. We've spent many weekends and holidays at Westwood as have many of our friends.

Why they chose this property

It's the location. Close to Thomas with all its artsy and antique shops and the Purple Fiddle. Yet Westwood is all about privacy. It's a great place to explore the Cannan Valley and Thomas/Davis area. There's a lot to do here, world class mountain biking, x-country skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, bird watching. The Blackwater Canyon rails to trail is at the bottom of our driveway. There is the Mountain State Brewing Company, Sirrianis Pizza, Hellbenders Burritos and Stumptown Ales all with a 3 mile drive. If your visiting between March and November, by all means, bring your mountain or road bike. December thru March bring your skis or snowboard. There's always something to do.
