About this property

Garden Bungalow Apt on the Island of Alameda

This 1940's, jewel of a rental allows you to escape the chaos of your days and rest inside a tandem, bungalow-style five-unit oasis that enters from a lushly landscaped courtyard where fresh air abundantly flows through the windows of every room. The serene setting creates a quiet, peaceful atmosphere for your travels.

Your bedroom hosts a queen sized bed lined with crisp, cotton linens, along with a fold-out sofa in the living room that also provides a large desk if working is necessary.

Recently remodeled, the kitchen is fully supplied and ready for you to add groceries and prepare meals to be enjoyed at the eat-in kitchen table. You have your choice of a bath or shower in the updated bathroom. Hardwood floors throughout and an on-site, coin operated laundry facility is available. No need for you to struggle with parking, you will have a coveted, dedicated off-street parking space! If you're a reader, you'll have to check out the Little Library located out front.

This guest unit is situated away from the street in a quiet residential area, centrally located on the charming Island of Alameda. Our Island was once known as "The Coney Island of the West" where wealthy vacationers from San Francisco would come to spend their summers on the beach. Now, well known for the fabulous views of The City from the long stretch of beach on the Bay, tree-lined streets with sidewalks and bike lanes, one of the largest collections of Victorian homes and other architectural masters, the USS Hornet air craft carrier from WWII, filming of many movies and headquarters of several well known companies. If you're lucky enough to visit during the 4th of July, we also have the longest parade in the country! Not to be missed is the fully restored Art Deco period theater downtown.

Perfectly situated in the San Francisco Bay, within a ten minute drive to the Oakland Airport, guests can easily walk to coffee shops, cafes, local groceries, shopping, and best of all; the beach is only a four-block walk away!
There are two ferry terminals that that transport you to San Francisco and other ports around the Bay including Pier 39, the SF Ferry Building, Sausalito, Larkspur, The Giants games, etc. We are located within a 10 minute drive from to Oakland Coliseum where you can catch an A's baseball game or concert.

There are about five steps leading into the unit, in case of mobility issues

This was our second stay here and of course we wouldn't have returned if we didn’t like it - a lot! It's a cozy one bedroom apartment with everything you need. There is parking in the driveway but nearby street parking is also usually very easy to find. Two short blocks away is the Blue Dot Cafe & Coffee Bar. It's a terrific neighborhood coffee place with excellent in-house made pastries as well as egg dishes. It's open daily except Sunday and Monday. Alameda's primary main street business district, Park Street, is maybe eight blocks east. You can skip a lot of driving by using the AC Transit 51A line with frequent service to Oakland and Berkeley, and to San Francisco (O or OX lines) along Santa Clara Avenue. It's an easy 5 block walk or so from this vrbo to catch a bus. If you haven't been to Alameda or stayed at this vrbo I think you'll be very glad you did. It's a great base of operations for a Bay Area visit. One last tip. If you're headed to San Francisco consider using one of the three ferry lines that operate from Alameda to the Ferry Building in the city. One from the former naval air station, the other on the estuary (across from Oakland), and the other from Bay Farm Island (part of Alameda but connected by a bridge from Alameda proper. It's a beautiful (and fast) way to get over to San Francisco. The ferries are fast.

Best holiday rest!!

This is very special. As you stay a week, you realize how all the things you have at home are here, and good quality too. It's beautiful, the seats outside are idyllic, I've used it just to reflect even for 5 minutes. This is a wonderful home and a very beautiful home as well, beautiful bath. kitchen, table at window... So restful for your holiday.

Excellent choice for a stay in Alameda

This is the third time in 2023 that we stayed about a week in Alameda. All three of the stays were good, but we give this our highest rating. The property itself has a great location in the center of Alameda though closer to the east end (Park Street) than to the west end (Webster Street). The street where the rental is located is very quiet, but only a short distance from Encinal Avenue, and its small business district with a market (Encinal Market) and a great coffeehouse (Blue Dot) with homemade baked goods and simple breakfasts. From the vrbo it's about a one mile walk to Park Street with its excellent array of places to eat, drink and shop. South Shore Center is a major shopping center nearby, with all of the necessaries including a splashy Safeway, Trader Joe's, and much more. The lodging is cozy but more than adequate for two guests. It's nicely furnished with everything you will need. It's very quiet as is the street that it's on. It's not a limitation, but be aware that if you have an automobile (vs an SUV or truck) you will need to park on the street. The parking space is a steep ramp from the street to the garage. We tried, but our sedan scraped the sidewalk as it was partly on the street and its front end on the ramp. We didn't try further, and simply reversed back into the street and parked the car there. We never had an issue finding close-by street parking There aren't any day-of-the-week or time of day restrictions. You'll really like this vrbo!

Great Quiet Apartment

We stayed at Betty's rental for 10 days over Thanksgiving while visiting family at Alameda. The location was convenient, safe and quiet. The apartment itself was very comfortable and clean. Online pictures and information are accurate. Hopefully we can stay here again the next time we travel to Alameda. As other people have mentioned, the parking spot was great! Ken & Kathe

Delightful Apt

We found the Garden Bungalow Apartment so charming. It was in a very peaceful neighborhood. It was super easy to get around the area from the apartment both by foot and by car. The apartment was clean and very well equipped. It had everything we needed, including things like q-tips, cotton pads and a sewing kit. Betty has thought of everything. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. We met some fellow travelers who were staying next door to us and enjoyed morning conversations with them. There was coffee waiting to be brewed and delicious banana bread waiting for our arrival. We can’t wait for our next visit. Thank you, Betty.

I'll join the other 5-star ratings

As others have said, this is a great property. It's located in a quiet, safe neighborhood and has a parking space. Alameda is a central location from which you can access all parts of the east bay. With the full kitchen you can prepare your own meals. One of the best aspects for me was that we lacked for nothing. I had forgotten to bring my flashlight. Bingo! there was a flashlight in the closet. Will make this my go-to place in the future.

Very Comfortable!

This is the 2nd time we stayed in Betty Gladden's apartment. It is my favorite place to stay in Alameda! The apartment was updated since our last stay and contributed to the coziness and comfort of the stay-especially the sitting room. The neighborhood is very walkable, close to eating places and stores, even a beautiful school and Basilica around the corner. Betty is very accessible and available when needed. Only suggestion I have is to include an electric sweeper in the apartment. We were there for close to 3 weeks and I would have liked to run the sweeper a few times. Just me and my need to keep busy. Thank you!

Peaceful residential area

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were visiting family so we didn’t need to use all the facilities on offer but it is cosy and well equipped. There are some lovely restaurants within walking distance and excellent shops. The bay is a short walk away with views of San Francisco. We highly recommend it.

Family emergency

This rental is like a warm hug at the end of a long day. It's comfortable, well appointed, quiet and in a nice neighborhood. I stayed for 8 days and was very comfortable. Convenient location. Walkable to grocery stores. I happened to meet the owner, Betty, one day. Very sweet/kind woman. Her banana bread upon arrival was a welcomed gift as I arrived late. I have stayed at many VRBOs and this is one of my very favorites. Thank you Betty!

Clean, Cozy, Quaint and Comfy!

We had a wonderful stay at Betty:s. Everything was perfect. And the Banana bread..Awesome. one reason we chose Betty's is the opportunity to have parking. The whole place simply felt like home everytime we walked in the door. Quiet and safe neighborhood. We can DEFINETLY reccomend that you put this at the top of your list of Alemeda stays. Thank you so much Betty for hosting! We would certainly stay again.

Beautiful and so convenient to Everything

Sweet, lovely little apartment, beautifully appointed. We enjoyed our stay tremendously. The sofa bed is not really a viable 2nd bed for longer stays - thin mattress and could totally feel the bars through it. But it would be an absolutely perfect place for a couple. Betty was an outstanding host. My roommate had a major health crisis and we thought we would have to stay a day or more longer and she was super kind and very accommodating. I highly recommend her darling, peaceful place.

Exceeded Expectations

I thought that the fridge would be stocked up. However there was a nice banana loaf waiting for me in the kitchen which was unexpected. The location was peaceful and safe only 10 minutes walk to the bus stop and public transport links into Downtown San Francisco. All in all this stay exceeded my expectations. I am likely to stay there again.

Third stay

This is the third time we have stay at this location because it is charming, clean, cozy, quiet, comfortable and very homey. There is plenty of closet/drawer space to unpack and settle in. The location is very convenient too. Betty is absolutely gracious and ever so thoughtful and helpful. It is so nice to have a place like this to stay in tine after time. I just hope we can get back to Alameda soon!!

About the host

Hosted by Betty Gladden

Host profile image
Betty owned and operated The Garratt Mansion Bed and Breakfast here on the Island for 30 years where she fine tuned the art of hospitality by engaging with guests from all over the world as well as hosting many weddings and events on site. This may be a new listing, but we are no strangers to the vacation rental market, just took a break for a bit.

Why they chose this property

This property is Betty's favorite because of the peaceful design courtyard setting. Alameda is known for it's near perfect weather year-round and every room is complete with fully operating windows to allow this must-have bay breeze to flow through. This property is in an excellent neighborhood and location that you can walk just about anywhere you need.
