About this property

Sugarbush + Mad River Glen Modern Mountain Retreat

Welcome to our secluded mountain modern retreat, where you don't even have to leave our property for adventure! In addition to our own spring-fed pond and bonfire pit, our home backs directly to an exclusive stretch of the Mad River perfect for winter hiking, sledding, snowshoeing, and other snow activities. Our land is also adjacent to 120+ acres of Vermont Land Trust forest that is yours to explore in private!

Our four-bedroom country home is perched high in the mountains and offers contemporary furniture/finishes and clean, open design. It can sleep up to 10 adults, yet we love that the home is also designed perfectly for a couple or a smaller group looking for Green Mountain peace and quiet.

The long and windy driveway (always promptly plowed by our caretaker) ends and the trees open up to 7+ acres of completely private lawn, spring-fed swimming pond, and woods with uninterrupted views of the Green Mountains. The home's indoor spaces are bathed in natural sunlight, but we recommend taking advantage of the front porch, back deck with seasonal gas grill, and screened three-season room to enjoy the outdoors without needing put on any shoes.

From the oversized two-car, floor-heated garage and ski storage area, you'll enter the mud room, which leads to an open-concept living space. Offering a spacious kitchen, we have all the appliances and tools you'll ever want...copper farm sink included. Choose to dine at the breakfast bar or perch the kids up there and set a nice tablescape in the dining room for the adults! Later, you can lounge by the fireplace and TV in the great room with your family and friends.

***We look forward to hosting you and your family and friends. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions that you have.***

Upstairs, you can retire to any of the four bedrooms:

SUGARBUSH ROOM
If you've skied it, you know why we named the Master Bedroom after this famed resort. Here, you'll find a comfortable king bed and cozy fireplace with reading nook. The master bath is complete with a sumptuous soaking tub and distant mountain views to boot.

MAD RIVER GLEN ROOM
A cozy and inviting design with warm wood furniture and a luxurious woven leather rug. Here, you'll find a queen bed that sleeps two. Two closets in this room allow you to unpack and feel right at home during an extended stay.

STOWE ROOM
A very comfortable room for two...or more. You'll find a comfortable queen bed as well as a fully set up crib for anyone looking to bring a baby up to the valley.

SMUGGLER'S NOTCH ROOM
A large and family-friendly room. Here, you'll find two twin beds that kids and adults will find very comfortable along with a full-sized futon as well. There are many games and also another big TV, so your group can split up and keep everyone satisfied when you can't pick a single movie to watch!

BATHROOMS (3.5 + outdoor shower!)
The home has a half bath on the living level, and two full baths on the upstairs bedroom floor (both with heated floors). The radiant-heated finished basement has another full, newly-renovated bathroom, but the space is otherwise completely open and unfurnished right now. We leave the basement accessible to guests so they can reach the utilities if need be, so you're welcome to use the bathroom and shower here too.

OUTSIDE
This is what makes our home especially unique. We own 7+ acres of land around the house, about half of which are cleared of trees and perfect for sledding and snowtubing! Our land backs directly to an exclusive stretch of the Mad River. The rest of our property is wooded forest for you to explore and hike, snowshoe, or other winter activities, and it abuts 120+ acres of the Vermont Land Trust's forest that contains beautiful flora, fauna, and small streams virtually inaccessible from anywhere besides our home.

Attached to the house itself, feel free to enjoy the covered front porch and screened-in three season room along with our back deck and gas grill. In the summer, don't dismiss the outdoor shower, which is perfect after a swim in our spring-fed pond! The bonfire pit is great for group gatherings and s'mores on the nights you aren't stargazing into the open sky! Please note that the pond is ~10 ft deep at the center, and you will be swimming at your own risk - no lifeguard present, of course.

Beautiful Setting - Superb Host

We had two parents, four children (12-6) and two grandparents who fit very comfortably in the house. The Mad River Valley provided great hiking and exploring opportunities. Stowe was an easy drive away and we went there once for dinner. As others have said, you feel away from it, but town (Waitsfield) is conveniently close. The kids loved the private access to the river and spent two afternoons rock hopping and wading in the river. The weather was hot, but we enjoyed the screened in porch that featured plenty of privacy and beautiful views. The kitchen was well appointed and the outdoor grill worked well. Perhaps the best aspect of the house was the outstanding support Mario offered! Both before and during our visit, he was super responsive providing shopping, hiking, and swimming recommendations. Thank you, Mario! We hope to return.

Living in nature, but convenient to town

I had never been to the Mad River region before and this was a great introduction. Very close to all the necessities and recreations of town, but not too close. You definitely felt "away from it all", but it was easy to run out and grab milk for breakfast. There was plenty of room, always important when traveling with multiple groups of adults and children. The small pond on the property was full of crayfish, salamanders and frogs, much to our delight. The river in the back of the property was great for afternoon walks and exploration and the views are as stunning as the pictures.

Great Location and wonderful house

The house was very roomy and clean. Great views of the mountains and felt remote despite being within 5-10 minutes of lots of great places in and around Waitsfield.

Excellent house and beautiful location

My family and I rented Mario's home for 4 weeks. Our stay was excellent and exceeded our expectations. The house is great - very clean, spacious, and updated with every amenity one would need for an extended stay. Being able to pull two cars in the garage was an added bonus and made things easier loading and unloading after skiing. My two boys loved the upstairs kids/family room as it gave them some privacy away from the adults and plenty of room to spread out. The view out to the backyard and mountains in the distance was great and my boys loved playing in the snow in the backyard. Great location - easy access to Lincoln Peak and Mount Ellen and a very short drive to the stores and dining in Waitsfield Village. I worked remotely for a couple of the weeks and the wifi was excellent. Mario was a great host and extremely responsive when we had questions about the property during our stay. We look forward to renting again!
