Perfect family surf vacation location

Olavaquero is the perfect place to take your family for a peaceful and relaxing surf vacation. From surfing the long lefts at the river mouth to surfing the punchy & peaky shore break right out front, there are many options for you to choose from and all of it is within walking distance from Olavaquero. In fact, you can check the surf out front while laying in your bed! It's a very nice setup to say the least. The house is huge, well laid out and the pool is awesome. The crows nest (tower) is also nice for checking the surf. What we enjoyed the the most about the house was eating our meals in the downstairs open area where you could literally watch the surf or check out the sunrises/sunsets while you were eating. Our caretaker Alejandro was a great host and his cooking skills are absolutely amazing. He can cook anything you desire and I promise you will not want to eat at any of the local restaurants once you try his cooking. Whenever we got tired of surfing, he took us to tunnel beach (amazing) and also the local waterfalls which my wife and daughter really enjoyed. My family and I had a hard time saying good bye to Alejandro. We look forward to the day we come back to visit him and Olavaquero. The owner James was very responsive and he answered all of the questions I asked him....which was plenty. At first, I was a bit nervous about traveling to the area with my family (wife, 4 year old girl) for safety concerns but James reassured me there would be no issues. He was exactly right! We had no safety concerns at all and the people in the area are some of the friendliest people I have ever met in my many travels. My family and I truly enjoyed our experience at Olvaquero and we will definitely be going back to visit one day in the hear future. I highly recommend this house for anybody seeking a quiet, relaxing yet fun filled time literally off the beaten path.

Great house and great location. Alejandro, caretaker and chef really does make this a wonderful place to stay. He goes out of his way to be very attentive to all our needs. Looking forward to our next stay.

Awesome Spot - Great location and owner

We really enjoyed our recent stay at Ola Vaquero. The house is in a great location- very close walk down the beach to the waves at Rio Nexpa. The owner was super responsive and helpful and the onsite caretaker and chef Alejandro is phenomenal. He cooked really good local cuisine for a very reasonable price and is a really great guy. Another bonus was the quiver of boards available which allowed us to not have to lug boards down which made travel much easier. Great bang for your buck here. Again, big thanks to James and Alejandro for helping make our trip so easy and fun.

Exactly as described and Much More!

If you're looking at this home as a possibility for your surf adventure, I have to warn you that this is not a surf trip. Olavaquero is an experience of a lifetime. Please don't do as I did and wait...A trip here will change your life. It seems incomprehensible that there not be waves to surf at the point, if not world-class as mentioned. Being in warm water, amongst old and new friends, with great waves - would have been enough, but to return to the property itself, I can only reiterate everything that has been said in the other reviews. It is masterfully designed and situated, it's so comfortable in the afternoons and at night. You will settle into the rhythms of the area, and it will ruin you for what you thought was a vacation. What I can not express is how wonderful the entire experience is. Watch the Pescadores show you what a fisherman is, by watching the ocean for an hour, then wading casually into 8' liquadora with a hundred pounds of rusty tackle. Then returning to retrieve 5 different species of fish. The best part of Nexpa, however, are the people. You will meet amazing people, in the lineup, on your travels, and most importantly, as your hosts. Manuel and Rebecca and their family are simply wonderful! Your mind will be blown by the food she prepares and by how genuine they are. The home is well appointed with everything you need and the info provided by the owners is just spot-on and the rental process is simple and easy. You will be emotional leaving this place, and you will vow to return, as we will. Thanks so much Pat and Jordan y Muchas, Muchas Gracias Manuel, Rebecca, Yareli y Valeria!

A perfect, relaxing getaway.

I've been to Rio Nexpa several times. Always stayed in the small raised huts at the point. Olavaquero blows the doors off these places for comfort and value while still maintaining the rustic beachfront charm that I love about Rio Nexpa. The pictures do not do this house justice. Everything was neat and clean as promised. Arranging the rental with Pat was a breeze (if you are extra nice to him he may give you the recipe to his "Cowboy Margarita"). The house is majestic. Huge master suites and bathrooms, comfy bunk room, theatre size movie viewing, internet, lots of rental boards, great pool and the best part: the lookout tower to check the surf and watch sunsets. Just steps to the sand and a short walk to the reeling surf at the point, this house stays comfortable during the hot afternoons because the whole front of it is open to the prevailing sea breeze. Perfect. Revecca, the live-in chef, cooked us some of the best Mexican food I've had anywhere. Do yourself a favor and ask her to make her shrimp chile rellenos or barbecue a whole fish. We did both and it was a treat. It was a nice alternatives to the restaurants in town. Great breakfast as well. All in all a wonderful trip for us. We had clean head-high surf all week. It's always a bit of a gamble going anywhere to chase surf, but Olavaquero is a sure bet for a great relaxing time, even is the surf doesn't decide to cooperate.

Wow!

Awesome house. Awesome location. We arrived a day late due to some lost luggage and time however once we we were finally at Olavaquero, the weight came off our shoulders and we started to unwind. The location couldn't be better - walking distance to Nexpa where there are some great little restaurants yet isolated up the beach where nobody bothers you. All you hear is the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. Time begins to stand still which is just what you want on a much needed vacation. This home is best enjoyed with at least four people. If you have to bring the kids, there is a bunk room to house them in. Personally, I would have added some sort or bar across the door to lock them in the room, but that's just me. Caretakers Manuel and Rebecca were great though I wish I spoke a little more Spanish than I do. Rebecca prepared the best meals for breakfast and dinner and we picked up some helpful tips to use at home. All in all, it was a great vacation and I can't wait to go back again.

Best kept Mexican vacation secret!!!

Olavaquero was more than I could have ever asked for! We planned a surf trip with 6 of our friends (house can sleep twice that amount) and the entire process of booking, planning and renting the home was completely seamless. The house was spectacular with amazing views of the Pacific. The sun sets right into the living room each night, which was a great way to finish the day. Although, I would recommend watching the sunset from the 40ft tall lookout tower. Pat (owner) was extremely helpful in providing recommendations for activities and food. Manual & Rebecca, the house caretakers were always available if we needed anything or had any questions. Rebecca makes the best breakfast, lunch, and dinner around. The community felt very safe and is a quick 5min walk into town. If you've been looking for the best kept surf spot in Mexico, then, look no further. Olavaquero & Rio Nexpa delivered on all levels. We're planning to make this an annual trip - can't wait to go back next year!

Viva Olavaquero!

What a great week. We had great surf all week and surfed the point every day. Also made some road trips to other spots just north of Nexpa. The caretaker staff was great. They made us excellent breakfast every morning after surf and it was always delicious. We went on a fishing trip with some locals from Caleta that did a great job. We caught a few fish and one of the guys speared a Gallo Fish. Manuel took us to a waterfall on a river about 10 minutes outside town, which was also a fun adventure. Good times. Viva Olavaquero!

Top-notch surf retreat - I'll be back

This house is awesome. It's absolutely huge with a Mediterranean/Tahitian vibe, located on the north-end of Nexpa beach and very private. If you're looking for a surf retreat in a beautiful setting look no further. I'll definitely be back! The house speaks for itself - plenty of room and amenities for your stay. The tower is by far my favorite space, giving a birds-eye view of the entire beach and view of the point-break at the river-mouth. Great spot to check the waves in the morning (with binoculars of course), and watch the sunset sipping a margarita. Rebecca and Manuel (the caretakers) made us feel like we never left home. The place was clean every day after returning from a morning surf, and a tasty breakfast always awaited our return. The brought a real family-feel to the trip. Oh, and there's a pool - KEY! The surf here is my favorite. The house has an expansive quiver, well-suited for all different types of waves. Surfing the point is definitely the highlight of Nexpa, and there are many more spots we discovered that were enjoyable. Favorite is Hua-Hua, about a 20 minute drive north. All in all i love this house and Nexpa, and will definitely return and recommend to anyone looking for an adventure. Thanks for the good times!

Great Hospitality!

What a wonderful place to just check out! Very little internet access and no phones so literally checked out! That said we didn't really know what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised by not only the house but also the fact that we were right on the beach and far from others so it was like we had our own little private beach. Rio Nexpa is a great surfer town and was a quick walk from our place. We had great times in the water, on the beach, and exploring the surrounding area. One of the best part about our trip was the hospitality from Rebecca and Manuel who care for the house. Rebecca's cooking was delicious too so make sure you get eat a few times at the house. We had six people at the house and it never seemed crowded. Perfect place for a large group!

Paradise

This place is amazing. So spacious and equipped with everything I needed to relax and have a good time. My boyfriend is an avid surfer so to have good surf ten steps out front and also at the point (ten minutes walk) was the ultimate dream for him. Caleta Beach is also a five minute drive from the house for more waves. I personally wanted just a peaceful relaxing time so I appreciated the beauty and tranquility of the ocean. Olavaquero has surfboards, fishing rods, a pool, great staff, and fresh, authentic Mexican food served at the time of your request. There is also a spiral staircase in the tower to lead you to a fab view of the ocean. We were lucky to stay one of the master suite and got to see and hear the crashing waves from our bed. The place was also fully equipped with fans to stay cool and a movie projector with tons of movies to stay entertained at night. There is also tons of books, games, and magazines to look at. I am in love with this secret getaway spot and cannot wait to visit again soon. It really is paradise.

Perfect Surf Vacation Spot

Olavaquero is the perfect surf vacation spot, can't wait to come back... Just returned from an amazing week at Olavaquero. Beautiful house literally steps from the water. Fun hollow beach break out front, which you can check from bed in the master bedrooms and watch from the dining table. Just up the beach is the point, super long lefts visible from the patio, balconies, and crow's nest tower(!). My non-surfer girlfriend came along and was super stoked on the quality of the accommodations and overall very beautiful romantic setting. No contentious moments of her feeling left somewhere she didn't want to be, very comfortable with a private pool, beach access, huge screen projector, etc... We also scored with the food, Rebecca cooks 2-3 meals a day and they were amazing, delicious, authentic and widely varied Mexican food. Surf wise there are tons of options in the area whether its small or big. We were there on a huge swell and the point was big, but rideable if you were Shane Forian:), so we had sheltered spots to chose from. On the normal sized days we surfed the point or other waves in the area. See a sampling of pics of the waves, house, and food below. It's also an easy trip from Cali. Just a 3hr flight from LAX and about 2hrs of scenic driving from Zihuatanejo. All in all, great uncrowded waves, great house, great food, easy trip. Would recommend to any surf, or beach, vacationers in a group or family.

Ola guapo!

This is my third stay at Olavaquero which speaks for itself. Since my last trip they added a great plunge pool and the new caretakers/chef was awesome. We spent the mornings surfing a big south swell in perfect glassy conditions, then came home to a great home cooked breakfast before a mid morning siesta and then another afternoon surf when the winds were calm. The pool is huge! So nice to cool off on hot afternoons. Can't wait for the next trip back!

pretty dam sick.

Olavaquero house was pretty awesome and right in front of a sick beachbreak. As an architect, the layout of the house and choice of material used provided a cool and shaded place to hang during the hot mexican afternoon. The crow's nest tower located on the upmost floor provided an amazing 360 view of the area and a great observation deck for the surf. Internet, fresh water, refridgerator, fresh fruit, and the warmest care takers made for a great surf trip in one of Mexico's (if not the world's) best left pointbreak.

Olavaquero is the best accommodation at Rio Nexpa

Waves were head-high to just overhead for 4 straight days. Max 25 guys in the water. All friendly. Having taken my last trip to Todos Santos, staying inside a lighthouse with double-to-triple overhead waves, I can say this Rio Nexpa/Olavaquero trip was a refreshing reminder of a typical vacation: fun and relaxing. I took notice of the time, thought, money and care the owners put into Olavaquero. And when you compare it to any other accommodation in the area, you are laughing, because you have it so good. Manuel and Rebecca are great as the caretakers.

Head High Consistent Surf in Remote Luxury

After a direct flight from LAX to ZIH and car ride filled with anticipation we arrived at Olavaquero. Sunset with the house aglow, open doors and a hot meal awaited us. Friendly onsite staff and an oceanfront location was the perfect spot to watch lines rolling in with cocktails in hand. Movie theater projection screen, indoor outdoor floor-plan, meticulous craftsmanship, wifi, pool- this is not your typical Mexican surf house. We surfed Nexpa for 4 days- each day better than the last and none below head high. Water mid-eighties, air temp the same. Camarones el Diablo made to order. Beds made each night. The best part? travel light and leave your boards at home. If you are looking for a warm water surf trip- Olavaquero provides consistent surf and luxury accommodations unavailable anywhere else.

Great memories await at Olavaquero

So I will not start up writing this review about how busy my life with raising family, work, needing to get away. In fact it was my wife's third point of encouragement to go on a surf trip from Santa Cruz, CA. While we enjoy year round surf here in Santa Cruz coupled with great weather I am very selective on the places that I do put the brakes on responsibilities and check out. I am so glad that I did make the trip to Olavaquero having the opportunity to surf a world class left hand break with eighty degree water and air! I also took the longer way to the destination by taking public transportation that was not only safe but quite entertaining with sales presentations by medicino, tamales, food sales reps along the way. When I arrived to the house the feeling I had right away that this was going to be a great stay for my three days. The openness of the layout of the house and ocean views are amazing as is the view high up in the tower for long range surf checks. Daily meals were fantastic! Fresh Mex with great service also made the stay top notch. The rooms were fantastic with gentle evening breezes while falling asleep to crashing waves is the only way to pass out after a day of surfing, fishing and enjoying the beach. Within Rio Nexpa beach there are a variety of surf options from the classic ultra-long left point break over cobblestone to a punchy beach break. While I was there the surf range was 3-5 ft. When we were not surfing the fishing was just as good as the surf! I was able to full in a meal while fishing on the sandbar in front of the house. I have caught plenty of fish growing up across 17 states but never on a sandbar hooking a fish while duck diving a wave! So many great memories for my three day stay I will certainly be heading back next year to enjoy a great stay, food, surf, fishing and relaxing. If you don't have the time make the time! I can't wait to put the daily grind brakes on and book another trip to Olavaquero! Pat and Jordan have made a fantatic get away for you to visit!! Thanks so much!!

Rio Nexpa's finest!!

WOW!! I spent a week at this piece of paradise located a short walk from a world class point break and only steps away from a fun, peaky beach break which offers great waves when the swell is smaller. I've experienced many surf and family trips to mainland mexico and I would say that this is by far my favorite home we have ever stayed in. The open air environment was so relaxing. It was very clean and offered all the amenities you could ask for. The caretaker, Rebecca prepared us 3 delicious meals a day and were all classic authentic mexican dishes. She also cleaned our rooms and our beds each morning...Thanks Rebecca!! Olavaquero has a huge quiver of rental surfboards. I would recommend renting one of their boards as they have every type of board for every type of condition and size of waves. One of the nicest features that this home has is the swimming pool. It's location is ideal and is surrounded by the kitchen and dining room table and best of all...the hammocks!!

This place is incredible! the house is completely amazing, with open air living and steps to the ocean this place just can not be beat. Very safe and private with plenty of space to lounge and hang out in or out of the sun. The surf is all very accessible either by foot or a short car ride away. N0 other place in the world

This place is incredible! the house is completely amazing, with open air living and steps to the ocean this place just can not be beat. Very safe and private with plenty of space to lounge and hang out in or out of the sun. The surf is all very accessible either by foot or a short car ride away. I can not wait to get back to this piece of paradise!

Wish we could come...

We cannot really review Olavaquero justly as we have not stayed there. We booked a week in August but were not able to come out. However, before we had to cancel we had many questions and they were all responded to in a prompt and timely fashion. Pat, the owner, was very informative and accommodating even before we came. When we were forced to cancel the trip, the refund was arranged without problem. I can't say anything about the actual place (although it looks breathtakingly gorgeous), but the owner runs his business well.

Family Reunion Made in Heaven

Three generations of family together in heaven. Thank you so much Pat and Jordan, well done you have a beautiful house on a beautiful beach in the middle of no where, private, quiet, peaceful and perfect just what we were looking for. We celebrated by relaxing by the pool, walking on the deserted beach, eating fresh fish and lobsters, exploring, reading, sleeping, laughing and making our new years wishes releasing chinese lanterns over the ocean. A wonderful holiday we will all remember forever. Thank you again, Jo and Family x

Olavaquero

This has got to be an ultimate "get away from it all"! The house is enormous and incredibly spacious with architectural features everywhere that get the "oohs and ahhs" flowing while still being practical and extremely comfortable! The location is remote enough to leave reality a long long way behind, there's just you, your friends, and the sun rising and setting on either end of the beach. Speaking of beach, the swells roll in like clockwork and the sound of surf never ends! This place is the perfect "escape" for anyone who is looking for a classy Mexican beach vacation that is not the usual high density tourist package. If your into surfing then you really have no choice- it's a "must do"!

Born in Alaska, spent time in Minnesota & Washington as a kid, until moving to Sun Valley Idaho as a teenager. Traveling the World throughout high school and college, I fell in love with surfing while living in New Zealand. Chose to put down roots in Northern California and Southern Oregon, until the Mountains of Idaho called me back to raise a family. Now splitting my time between surfing in Mexico, farming in Southern Oregon, and family time in Idaho. A dream of mine is to have great family friendly places to stay along the Mexican/Central America/South American coasts for surfing and playing. I host this along with my wife, Layla. We love to answer any & all questions you may have, so please do not hesitate to reach out.
