About this property

Farmstead Retreat with woods, pond, trails and easy access to local attractions

This is a 100+ year old farm home with full interior/exterior renovation to its original footprint and function. Renovation was completed in spring 2021. This setting is perfect for quiet, relaxing time away for individuals, couples or families. Intentional design and style choices honor a traditional older farm house and life experience including: a restored clawfoot tub (no shower), gas stove and cast iron cookware (no microwave), restored farm house sink (no dishwasher). The house IS wifi enabled.

The land is a mix of open spaces and wooded acreage adjacent to working farm land. The farm incorporates sustainable agriculture and farming methods with an emphasis on soil regeneration, water conservation and free range grazing and meat production.

A large fire pit area is great for outdoor open fire cooking, s'mores and late night stargazing. Ashland is a 10 minute drive from Chequamegon Bay trails, beach and park access and easy access to Bayfield and other attractions without the tourist congestion! Bayfield ferry to Madeline Island (40 min.), Big Top Chautauqua (35 min.), dozens of parks, water falls, hiking, biking, kayaking, cross country skiing (easy day trip to down hill skiing) and snowshoeing in nearby National Forest land.

The house is cozy and convenient, designed for cooking, conversation, reading and relaxing after days spent in outdoor adventure. Three bedrooms (master on the main floor, two upstairs, smallest bedroom has trundle beds). Bath tub and toilet facilities are separated for ease of use.

Ski weekend in Ashland

My friends and I had a great experience at Dan & Kathy's. We were in town for Book Across the Bay, which was unfortunately cancelled, but we had a fantastic weekend nonetheless cross-country skiing at Mt. Ashwabay. Dan & Kathy were very friendly and responsive. I also appreciated the well-equipped kitchen! Wouldn't hesitate to return!

Quiet and cozy

6 of us came for Apple Fest weekend and enjoyed our stay - the gas fireplace was cozy on the cool Fall nights and the hosts left wine and bread from local stores for us to enjoy. Would stay again.

Farmhouse Stay

We spent 5 days at this lovely farmhouse and could not have asked for better accommodations. The place was clean, cozy, and comfortable with plenty of room for 5 adults. The hosts were friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome.

Great Property

Such a great place! We were a 10 min drive to the lake and activities but had plenty of space at the “farmhouse” to stay active. This place has great trails, yard for a pick up game with the kids and super friendly hosts.

Great hosts and beautiful farmhouse

Hosts were so great and easy to work with. Kids enjoyed seeing the ducks, chickens and pig, and seeing the Ashland/Bayfield area sights (and swimming at the nearby beaches of course!) The house was charming and unique and comfortable!

Birthday weekend getaway

It was truly amazing! All the comforts of home and so relaxing. No hustle and bustle of traffic and being cooped up in a motel room. Granddaughter got to play on the huge deck and was able to see the animals. Highly recommend and hopefully returning again!

Farm stay

A very nice visit to the farm--relaxing, but due to unseasonably warm temps a bit uncomfortable with no AC. Would have enjoyed a more convenient shower also. Great property and farm house!

Farmstead

Property is absolutely beautiful. Well worth not staying at a hotel. The hosts were very easy to talk with and very hospitable. The check in/out was smooth. You cant beat waking up to open fields on the porch listening to the chickens and drinking a nice cup of coffee. It is a extremely nice break from a fast pace modern world.

Peaceful getaway

We enjoyed the solitude this farmhouse provided. The owner was friendly but gave us our space. The house was gorgeous and was well stocked. It had everything we wanted and more. The kitchen was amazing and we were very comfortable during our stay. We could tell that the owners enjoy providing a wonderful experience, with a lot of attention to charm and detail.

Summer- Swim Vacation

We came up to do the point-to-la pointe swim and decided to make a little summer vacation out of the swim. There were a few kiddos and adults so Dan and Kathy's place was absolutely perfect for entertaining two very busy 2 year olds. The house was beautiful as well as the surrounding land, animals and trails. I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a quiet respite, this is your place.

Charming farmhouse

A quiet getaway in a charming restored farmhouse. The kitchen was well equipped and the bedrooms comfortable. The parlor was cute. A comfy sofa or chair might be nice in there. The wrap around deck was immense and we would have enjoyed it given nicer weather. Fun to see the 2 piglets! Thx for a nice stay.

Magical Farmstead Getaway

This place is nothing short of charming. The interior design of mixed materials with an emphasis on beautiful wood grains including some reclaimed barnwood, a very well appointed kitchen that any chef would be thrilled with, comfy beds, and a magical bookcase “secret door” leading into a bathroom with a classic clawfoot cast iron soaking tub set beneath the warm glow of therapeutic heating lamps. Out the window you can see well-stocked bird feeders enticing a delightful array of winged beauties, not to be outdone by the free range chickens and ducks penned in next to the mother pig and her newborn piglets. Our four year old daughter was over the moon with this place and was very sad to leave. It is conveniently located near town, where the co-op provides high-quality produce. You are quite close to the big lake and a short drive away from some first rate hiking. We took our daughter to Haughton Falls and it did not disappoint. Hosts were hospitable and kind. They provided everything we needed. Will book again.

Total Retreat

Our family was looking for a secluded place to have a few days to decompress. This lovely renovated farmhouse is quirky, for sure, but our family loved our stay. Kathy & Dan were incredibly welcome and gracious. They had stocked the kitchen with bread from Ashland Baking Company, which started us on a three-day bakery binge. They led us on a tour to see baby sheep and goats, and shared their dog multiple times. There was plenty of room to spread out, and the pictures don’t justify the fabulous deck. Lots of happy hours watching birds and watching stars. We were minutes away from Lake Superior, but at the house, we only heard the countryside. We explored waterfalls, beaches, and trails, all within an easy drive. The kitchen was lovely to cook in, as well. Practical notes: since the house is on a septic system, there is no garbage disposal. Since the house is a renovation, there is only a tub and no dishwasher. However, our teenagers enjoyed the property so much that they didn’t even complain about washing dishes. If you like quirky older spaces, seclusion, and some of the most gracious hosts we have encountered, this is the place for you.

Great spot for a getaway

We were very excited to get away. We pulled up to the property and were greeted by the owners. They went over a few things about the house, gave us a tour , and let us get to relaxing. There was plenty of space for the two of us, in fact we did not use the upstairs. It is perfect for a family though. Everything is beautiful and clean. The owners left bread and wine for us from local companies. We were gone most of the day and spent our nights relaxing on the porch. The porch is huge with 3 great seating areas. There is a grill. We did not walk the trails on the property because we were out and about, but look forward to hiking next time. There is no a/c, but with the windows open and the ceiling fans going, it was not needed. The bed was comfy. Just note, there is no indoor shower, it is outside. I forgot that detail, but the tub with the handheld shower inside, was fine with me. We did not need the washer and dryer. The oven is amazing. Make note, no microwave, but we did not need it. Someone made mention of a comfier couch, but the chairs were super comfy and there is another chair in the loft perfect for reading. We would totally stay here again, and just may do that in the fall.

Cute farmhouse

Cute farmhouse that worked well for 3 adults and 2 teens. We explored the area and didn't spend that much time at the house, but you could have a super relaxing time reading books, walking the trails or playing games. Super nice hosts and kitchen was great to cook in. Everything was well thought out. Would stay here again!

About the host

Hosted by Dan & Kathy Smith

Host profile image
Dan & Kathy purchased the property in September 2020 and immediately embarked on a full renovation inside and out. Keeping the farmhouse's main design, they demolished the interior down to the studs and proceeded to install new plumbing, electrical and septic systems, raised ceilings, opened the stairway, replaced and refinished floors, walls, ceilings, etc.

Owners live on adjacent property and look forward to hosting visitors to the area. Dan is a retired business owner and Kathy is a Presbyterian minister.

Why they chose this property

If you truly want a quiet, rural retreat this is a place you will enjoy. With a mix of open and wooded acreage, pond, trails and next to working farm land this is a gentle introduction to living closer to nature. Eagles are regular visitors overhead, cranes, geese and ducks visit the pond, deer are frequently seen and at night coyotes and an occasional wolf can be heard near the river (3 miles away). Coffee on the porch in the morning can be followed by sunsets in the evening and star gazing at the fire pit! The breezy openness keeps the warmest days more comfortable.
