Perfect for long-term stays (email us for special rates!)

Drive through our beautiful woods to our secluded rustic cabin on an eastern back bay of Lake Ontario. Located just outside of historic Sackets Harbor New York.

This has been our casual family 'camp' for over 40 years. It has 300' of waterfront with a 15' dock. Bring your medium to small size boat, or we have a canoe and kayak. You can row out to the surrounding islands to swim.

We love to bird watch here. Many Blue Herons, ducks and sometimes a pair of bald eagles are nesting on the property. We have a pair of white swans that come back very year. Kids will love to fish off the dock. If you have a boat, it is a great place to fish.

Enjoy the village of Sackets Harbor The War of 1812 was fought here and there are many historical buildings to wander by in town. There are also many top quality restaurants in the village and a wonderful brewery. The kids can go to Old Macdonalds Farm where they can pet and feed animals. Golf courses are close by. GOU II

We love to stay here in October for our annual girlfriend gathering (since 2009). It is perfect for a laid back weekend of fire place warmth, relaxation, commraderie, enjoying the changing leaves, heron, overlooking black river bay and more. We usually don't venture into town but it is a nice quaint area that is laden with history and bird watching opportunities If we went earlier in the season we would definitely enjoy the kayaks, canoes and beautiful deck.

Great Lake Serenity

At the end of the road you find a rustic lake side cabin/home. The access to the water by kayak and canoe provided a daily activity of quiet paddling and fishing in the recesses at the head of Lake Ontario. Any imperfection is made up with by the relaxing setting. The history and charm of Sackets Harbor was topped only by the wood fired pizzas and tasty brews found there. Proximity to Henderson Harbor and the St Lawrence River provided several lake life excursions where the family lounged in the lee of Six Town Point and fished for smallmouth or pedaled to Cape Vincent. We had no idea we were exploring a proposed marine sanctuary but understand why. We'd recommend this for anyone wanting to try out lake life.

Vintage Seclusion

The cottage is in a really secluded area in the woods and is perhaps 1950’s or 60’s vintage. It retains that vintage - the cottage has had minimal if any major upgrades. That said, it was clean and suited our needs. We were out exploring the area daily and were “home” early morning and evenings. For us the biggest thing was the deck and enjoying great weather and watching all that was happening on the water. Beautiful early mornings with the morning sun! I wished all week that the trees and brush were trimmed so hanging tree limbs were not blocking half the available view of the bay. Also looked forward to fishing from the dock or possibly using the canoe but conditions in front of the cottage were not conducive for it because of the large amount of marsh grass all around. Overall a good place to stay and explore the 1000 Islands area!

Family had a wonderful time

I rented the house for a vacation with my daughter and her family, but unfortunately my wife and I couldn’t make it, BUT, my daughter said the house was great, plenty of room and decorated beautiful - and loved the movie selections with the kids. A lot to do and see in the area. From her report I’d definitely recommend this house!

Cool stay on Muskie Bay

Pretty house, really cool interior design, plenty of space for multiple families. Definitely a rugged, all natural bayside experience. You have no choice but to get in touch with nature with the lack of cell service, wifi and people in general. Sacketts harbor was really close and easily accessible. Fish were around but not biting in august.... I would go back just to kayak around the Dexter wildlife preserve. Only reason I gave 4/5 was the sulfur smell of the water was very apparent (they are transparent about this in the listing), and the property was "natural", just lacking general upkeep for certain things, but not a dealbreaker.

Lovely home

It’s a lovely home with beautiful views of Muskelunge bay and the wildlife there. Spacious deck and living room. It’s clean and well equipped. The biggest problem was the sulfur water. They provide a water cooler for drinking water.

Charming but run down

The house is called the Duck Soup Cottage, which says a lot about its charm. The interior is filled with tasteful art works and mid-century looking furniture. The house has four bedrooms and two lofts, which can sleep 6-8 people comfortably. Every room comes with a nice bed, several dressers, and lots of sheets and towels. The kitchen is fully equipped with all the basics. There are also lots of card games, board games, and a very impressive DVD collection (but strangely no Duck Soup.) My family stayed there for a week and had a genuinely great time. We went out sight-seeing, swimming and biking during the day and came back for a movie every night. Our vacation there was truly fun and relaxing. Despite all the positive things just said, I am quite disappointed by how run down the house is. Every window screen has holes, which makes it impossible to open them for fresh air, because as soon as we do that, insects would come in by the hundreds. The toilet in the upstairs bath doesn't flush properly. Many drawers and cabinets are littered with droppings. I understand that critters are part of the outdoor life. But, if the house had been better maintained, these annoyances could have been minimized. The cooking ware in the kitchen needs to be replaced. The conditions of the frying pans are so bad that we had to run to a local supermarket to get a new one in order to make pancakes. (We eventually left our new frying pan in the kitchen for the next family.) Part of the dock in the back of the house is covered with plywood which has rotted that it is dangerous to step on. We tried to go around that by going into the lake through a path next to the dock. However, the mud and debris along the path made the process quite unpleasant. The lake shore next to the house is badly needing maintenance. The shore is overtaken by reeds and bushes, which not only makes boat-launching very difficult, it also breeds blood-sucking flies that attack us relentlessly. The water level near the shore is very low which turns that part of the lake into a marsh. I was told by some residents there that the low water level was caused by the control of the river feeding into the lake. In the end we didn't let all the problems prevent us from enjoying the lake. The green canoe and two kayaks in the shed are great. We used them almost every day to get to a small island a short ride into the lake where we could swim.

Beautiful location

My family (two parents and two teenage boys) stayed at the house for a week in early August. The location is wonderful. The house itself has a deck looking out on the water and kayaks and a canoe that can easily be brought down to the dock for a paddle around the inlet and a quick swim. The beaches on Lake Ontario were great (we generally went to Southwick beach, about 20 minutes away) and Sackett's Harbor is a lovely little town. While we appreciated the rustic nature of the house, we thought it could have been cleaner. We discovered a mouse problem soon after arrival and generally thought the grounds and house could have been better maintained (kitchen, bathrooms, screens). We overall enjoyed our stay, though, and hope to visit the area again in the future.

Review

Once we cleaned the house, we had a nice time. With the exception of the trundle bed (mouse droppings, dirt & leaves on the sheets & was quickly stripped) the beds were fresh.Cobwebs thru out, floors were dirty. We had to wash every pot, pan, dishes, silverware & cooking utensils before we could use them. The can opener is so rusted & should be discarded. I took trip home to get mine. We even had to wash the living room windows so we could enjoy the view. We went through the house with disinfecting wipes to clean every surface area. The gas grill was horribly filthy & we had to go home again to get our own to use. We couldn’t use the ceiling fans because they were covered with dust & I have a compromised immune system (Leukemia )& the owners were aware of this & promised to have the whole place cleaned & sanitized....it was not! The deck was lovely once we cleaned the dirt & cobwebs off the chairs & scrubbed(tried to) the small table. The shower curtains all need to be replaced...the bottoms were black & gross. Even all the lighting needs a good cleaning but we didn’t have ladder tall enough to reach them or the fans to clean. The sink in the main floor bedroom doesn’t drain well. The can opener should be thrown away as it was all rusty & I needed to go home again to get my handheld one. I took pictures of all this. This house has great potential but I don’t appreciate being charged a cleaning fee when WE did the cleaning. The next group that rents it will at least NOT have to clean before they use something.

very quiet, idyllic, great wetlands!

Big older house, furniture is ok, good beds. The landscape is great, Wetlands and Lake Ontario in front of you, wonderful waterplants. We enjoyed taking the boat, you are all alone in a great nature, very special. The water in the house is a little sulfuric, thats something to get used to. Sackets Harbor is close, nice restaurants. For shopping you have to drive to Watertown. We enjoyed our stay. We missed a dish washer and wifi. We don’t need internet all the time, but if you are from another country and cannot use your cell phone for internet connection its difficult.

Duck Soup Cottage is simply a great family rental property. Plain fun, adventure, and relaxation.

Duck Soup is a rustic cottage with loads of charm. It has marvelous views of Black River Bay (with a sun rise worth getting up for). It’s located on a one-lane dirt road, off a “private” dirt road, off a dead-end street. There isn’t much more you can do to get away from it all. It’s a large cottage with a main room with high vaulted ceilings, a large cozy fireplace, mid-century furnishings and decor, and two loft spaces that add extra lounging areas (did I mention the view of the bay?). There are four comfortable bedrooms and 2-1/2 bathrooms. There is a private screened-in porch offthe master bedroom. One of the bedrooms was stocked with books, puzzles, and games to keep the family fun going. There is a gas grill and a full kitchen where we made delicious meals. The deck has a table and chairs for dining (and of course the views). We loved the bird watching: the Swan family, the Duck family, the elusive Loon, the mighty flocks of Geese, and the aerial stunts of the Common Terns fishing for breakfast. We also enjoyed sipping evening cocktails on some lawn furniture in the back of the bay above the private dock. There are two kayaks, a canoe, and three bikes we used to explore the local area. It’s also just a short drive to the quaint town of Sackets’ Harbor, where we enjoyed checking out the history of the area and vistas of Lake Ontario. Another day we drove to Clayton, NY, on the Saint Lawrence River. Both towns have decent shops and restaurants. One of our favorite places to pickup supplies is The Little Barn Bulk Foods (10 minutes away), the have great fresh steaks and chicken. The big grocery stores are down the road from them in Watertown. On Wednesdays, a downtown farmers market is held in Watertown. One day, we had a great day-trip to Gananoque, Canada, and took a boat-ride tour of the “1000 Islands” of the Saint Lawrence Waterway. After we had a delicious lunch at the Purple House Cafe in Gananoque. Another great day trip is to take the two Wolfe Island ferries to Kingston, Canada, where there are many great restaurants to try and interesting shops to explore. We stayed for a week (and could have stayed longer). Duck Soup Cottage is a lovely home-away-from-home that we hope to return to again. Have fun, go on adventures, and don’t forget to relax.

Great place for relaxing or as a home base for trips to the Thousand Islands or Canada. We spent time in Kingston Ontario, Clayton, Cape Vincent and just happened to be there for the French Festival as well as Can Am Days in Sackets Harbor. Highly recommend this rustic gem!

Great family getaway

We stayed for a week in August. We had a nice laid back vacation. If you want to just unplug - this is a great place... just bring your bug spray!! The only reason for 4 stars is because the tap water is sulphur and I had a really hard time showering with it ... but bottled water is provided for drinking. Owners are very responsive. We had a few questions after arriving and received replies quickly. Would definitely rent again.

Relaxing Lake Getaway

I stayed at this house with a group of friends and it was perfect for a relaxing long weekend. The living and dining area is huge and comfortable, perfect for playing board games or just watching a movie. There's a nice back deck with beautiful views. One of the owners told me that they've been updating lots of the furniture, decor and amenities recently, and it shows. The location is also great. It's quiet and peaceful on the lake and only a few minutes away from quaint Sackets Harbor. It's also just a short drive to Watertown, which has larger grocery stores and more bars/restaurants. Overall, it's a great place to stay and I highly recommend it.

We love it there

A friend of ours discovered this camp in 2009 and we have been enjoying it for our annual Columbus Day girls weekend ever since. Obviously, we love it there and hope to return for years to come. Very fun and relaxing weekend for all. Now that I know that there are kayaks, a canoe and bikes, I hope to also share this camp with my children and grandchildren. The owner has always be very responsive.
