Natural setting with amazing wildlife

We had an amazing week living with the sloths, monkeys and macaws. Literally steps from a relatively private section of Playa Cocles. My only criticism is that the bed was older and my partner found it to be somewhat uncomfortable. Casa Caracola will immerse you in all the nature that the Southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica has to offer.

We Loved It but

We loved our week of relaxation in this bungalow. It is perfect for two people in an idyllic situation surrounded by nature, next to and with views to beach and sea and yet conveniently close to shops and restaurants. It could be even better with only a small investment in some of its facilities eg cooker, curtains and cutlery.

Wonderful stay with sea view and amazing wildlife!

The bungalow is simply stunning – located right by the sea with a breathtaking view. One of the highlights was the incredible wildlife in the garden: monkeys climbing through the trees, and we even spotted sloths hanging right in front of the bungalow. A true paradise for nature lovers! The kitchen is very well equipped, making it easy to prepare your own meals. The beautiful terrace is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sea view at any time of day.An absolutely perfect stay – highly recommended!

Lovely stay at Casa Caracola!

We enjoyed our stay at Casa Caracola! Quiet and secluded. Thomas was great with communication. Responded to any questions we had almost immediately. Check in was super easy. Very clean when we arrived. Only negative was that accessing the beach required walking through a wet, swampy path. We checked it out when we arrived and decided to drive to beaches with less swampy access. It overall, it was a great stay

Unbelievable!

You just can't get any closer to the beach. Very private setting and personal access to the beach. Just a short drive to several other beaches and soooo many dining options close by.

Beach bungalow

Beautiful beach front property with easy access to the beach from the back gate. 7 min walk along the beach to the charming beach town of Cocles where you'll find many shops, restaurants and a laid back beach life. Our host Thomas was very responsive and had excellent recommendations on activities, cocktail lounges and restaurant. I would definitely stay here again.

Monkeys, sloths, poison frogs & more!!

We traveled in our small car for six weeks from the Pacific to the Caribbean. This place had it all, beach right out front, and all the wildlife we’d been hoping to see right there on the property! The owner & friends stayed in the big house and had recommendations for places to visit & some great restaurants. Puerto Viejo is not far by car or bicycle, overall a lovely place to stay.

Perfect Caribbean Beachfront Bungalow

Casa Caracola is a hidden gem on Playa Coccles, you literally walk through the garden gate right onto the beach! The bungalow is beautifully appointed, within easy walking distance of supermarkets and restaurants, and has secure off street parking. We loved falling asleep to the sound of waves crashing, hanging out on the deck in the mornings watching the agoutis make their rounds in the yard, and looking for frigates flying overhead. Thomas made the whole check-in process super easy, and as first time VBROers we really appreciated this help.

Peaceful honeymoon stay

What a wonderful stay! The house is lovely, sitting just off the beach, with great views of the sea. Traveling on our honeymoon, we had a blast at the beautiful Cocles beach. Our host during our stay, was awesome. He greeted us at the door, and then offered some excellent recommendations. Take his advice, follow his recommendations- they were top notch. The house has a functional kitchen, excellent bathroom and a very comfortable bed. My wife and I strongly recommend this place.

A Perfect Private Retreat

This stand alone home is sheltered from view of other properties and almost completely private (except a shared walkway to the beach with the home behind it). It’s surrounded by huge trees that regularly host sloths and troops of monkeys. You can hear and see the waves crashing on the beach from the large front porch. It’s the perfect distance from the populated part of Cocles beach (10 minute walk on the beach). 40 minute walk from Puerto Viejo and a lovely 1.5 hour walk to Punta Uva (all along the beach). The house is exactly as pictured and was absolutely perfect. I never wanted to leave!

Everything we had hoped for!

This is a place that will draw you back! Comfortable and private Casa Caracola is the perfect beach house for a couple who want to get away from people yet remain a short bike trip from a cute little town with numerous dining choices. Cocles Beach, immediately outside the gate, is a great one and there are numerous others nearby offering good snorkeling and great swimming. With floor to ceiling bi-fold glass doors opening to the water, the well-secured property makes it possible to feel completely comfortable leaving things open to listen to the waves pound the shore at night. I perfect property in a perfect place!

private cottage tucked away on a great beach!

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at casa Caracola! What a great little house... tucked in a lush garden right on the beach. The property is very secure and allows you to sleep with all the doors open to the sounds of the surf and the jungle. We had a resident sloth in the almond tree which we saw everyday, she even came down one day and we watched her and her baby for hours..one day we had 12 howler monkeys in the tree over our deck, again we spent the afternoon watching them. The house is well equipped and very spacious for two people. It was a pleasure to book with Sofie, and Thomas was super responsive and helpful! We would not hesitate to return or to recommend to others.... our favorite rental during our 3 week stay in beautiful Costa Rica!

Rainforest meets the beach in a comfy bungalow

My husband and I spent our birthday week in this beautiful bungalow in the rainforest. Walking to the home you walk through the garden filled with pineapple bushes and banana trees. The bungalow itself is well stocked with everything you need. It is quite comfy. Things to note: the path to the beach was overgrown when we were there, however, easily remedied by driving as far as you can and walking the rest, also it very choppy, We didn't attempt it. Secondly, wet clothes/towels do not dry in the Rainforest (maybe everyone but us is aware of this), there's no self service laundry. Lastly, Puerto Viejo is awesome!!!! We thoroughly enjoyed the property, the hospitality and the locals. Thank you for sharing your home.

Rusting dump with maintenance issues and deceiving host

The listing stated there was a hottub, which did not exist. When we wanted to use it and could not find it, we asked the host about it, he said there was none and he then tried to change the listing! The location is excellent but the unit is very run down, in poor condition, nothing has been maintained, there is an unacceptable level of rust everywhere, including on all four burners of the stove, on the refridgerator and all curtain rods; the shower would not drain, so you stood in dirty water which attracts mosquitos, some windows would not lock which is a security hazard, and others were rusted shut, there were gaps in the floorboards, the bathroom cupboard was broken and open to the elements, the unit was unbearably hot with two old rusting fans that did not work properly, there were several dogs at the property next door that howled all day and all through the night. Don't be fooled by the photos, you will notice some careful placement has been done to hide the rust. This place has tons of potential but needs serious work. It is very close to the sea so it is rusting and deteriortating due to lack of proper care and upkeep. If you stay here, you will be paying luxury prices to stay at a small rusting dump. The host is a greedy and deceitful person, beware of the lies he may feed you. This is the worst experience we had staying at any unit listed on any platform and trying to get a refund from VRBO was also a total nightmare. Do youself a favour and stay somewhere else!

Great retreat on the beach near Puerto Viejo

We had a great three week stay at Casa Caracola. The bungalow is exactly how it is pictured on VRBO. It is 100 feet from the beach, and indeed we were visited by sloths and howler monkeys on a regular basis. The bungalow is about 2 miles from Puerto Viejo. We rented bikes for the entire stay ($5/day), and rode into town on a regular basis to shop, grab coffee or lunch, or get to one of two ATMs in town. PV has a definite surfer vibe. Lots of young people hitting the beach and bars around town. Our favorite coffee spot was Caribeans, about half way between Casa Caracola and PV. Great coffee, great people, and great chocolate. Both Caribeans and Chocorart offer chocolate tours, and they're worth the small investment. So is a visit to the Jaguar Rescue Center (where you will likely see lots of cool animals, but not jaguars). Our favorite restaurant was La Pecora Nera, a great Italian restaurant less than a mile from the bungalow. Puerto Viejo is in a rain forest. It rains, a lot. That's part of the deal, and why it's so green. We had rain almost every day, but it rarely rained continuously, and didn't prevent us from getting out and about. We thought we would be doing a lot of swimming, kayaking, snorkeling and SCUBA diving. Wrong! The photos you see of tranquil Caribbean waters apparently does exist, in October or November. Certainly not in February. The water was warm enough, but definitely too rough for any water activities (including fishing) other than surfing. There is a house on the front part of the property. Three different groups came through while we were there. They are your neighbors, and although you have a lot of privacy, you will see them regularly as you go in and out. We got along great with our neighbors, and joined them for drinks and dinner. Thomas stopped by a few times to check on us, but otherwise left us alone. Discuss with Sophie or Thomas what the rules are on their washer and dryer. If you're there for more than a week, you need to do wash, and while the website at one point indicated a washer was available (with no mention of any cost), Thomas asked that we pay $20/load. All in all, a great spot and fun vacation.

Dream house

We stayed in Casa Caracola for 6 days in January 2013, and I cannot say enough good things about this place. Firstly, the location. We wanted to be near Puerto Viejo but not IN it. Coming from New York City, we were adamant about finding privacy, peace and quiet. We rented bikes right near the house on the first day and used them the whole time. It took us 10 mins to ride into Viejo (only 2 km away) and 10 mins in the other direction to visit Chiquita and Punta Uva. We felt we were ideally located smack in the middle. The beach in front of the house is glorious - and very often we were the only ones on it! Incredible! My boyfriend loved the Cocles waves but I preferred the supercalm, placid waters of Punta Uva. The house itself is gorgeous. Photos speak for themselves. The most beautiful part of it for me was hearing the ocean all night an all day - so soothing. We loved opening up the entire house in the morning. We spent a good deal of time relaxing on the back deck reading and watching the giant sloth that was in the tree in the backyard for 2 whole days (bring binoculars, they stay pretty high up!). There were also howler monkeys and a toucan during our visit. The house is very safe (gated and alarmed) and we felt 100% secure all the time. The area itself feels extremely safe and we felt that instantly. The grocery store is a 2 minute walk away and we often had breakfast/lunch at the house and rode our bikes to Viejo for dinner (where there are some very good restaurants). We also went to the lovely La Pecora Nera Italian place right in Cocles that was superb. Having lived in Italy before, I can say that the food was top notch. The carpaccio was to die for. If you are concerned about staying outside of Viejo, don't be! Cocles is really so close and if you don't want to ride a bike, or don't have your own car, taxis are abundant. We were glad we didn't rent a car...everything felt close and reachable. A not-to-be-missed local visit is the Jaguar Rescue Center in Chiquita - an impressive place that rehabilitates injured and orphaned animals then reintroduces them back to the wild. We saw every kind of animal imaginable and even got to hold baby howler monkeys (one fell asleep in my arms!). Amazing. Lastly, we had the good fortune of meeting the owners Sophie and Richard while we were there (they were staying in their other home Casa Mariposa). What hospitable, kind and welcoming folks. We will definitely be back to this wonderful house!

Hidden Gem on Playa Cocles

We so enjoyed our 10 nights in Casa Caracola, Playa Cocles. The casita was clean and comfy. Private and secure. We loved being able to walk through our private gate onto the beach. Location: perfect. On the beach and close to numerous restaurants and the supermarket. No car needed. We rode bikes the entire time. Thank you Casa Caracola

Perfect location to town and beach through the backyard!

We absolutely loved this property and it's location to the beach and town. We hardly went through any gas the whole week we were there. The house is comfortable and gets a good breeze from the ocean. We loved walking to Cocles beach from the back yard. I recommend coming during the day to find this place, it is a walk to the end of the property behind the first house. It was difficult for us to find it at night, but that's Costa Rica! Thomas, the property manager, was friendly, very responsive, and helpful! We would definitely come back here.

Awesome beachfront property with lovely hosts

The bungalow is just great. Nice details and decoration, a lot of space and direct access to the beach. An overall beautiful house with a nice terrace and garden. The area is more quite , but walking distance to the supermarket (5 minutes) and some real lay great restaurants. You can even walk to Puerto viejo if you want to go out or sth (30 -40 minutes). Most important to us is that we made new friends as we were lucky to get to know the hosts and the owners . They are such open minded and warm-hearted people and made us feel part of the community.

Costa Rica is a beautiful place and it will capture your hearts.

Why they chose this property

Costa Rica offers a wide variety of spectacular terrain , animals and plants. With its unique location it boasts both Pacific and Caribbean coast lines. The Caribbean Coast offers a more relaxed friendly holiday with the added excitement of some extreme sports, for those who want to venture away from the delicious local food, drinks and beach. There are many reasons why Puerto Viejo is known as the most happening town on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. There is so much to see and do here, but far and away the overall vibe here is the 'pura vida' that Costa Rica is so famous for. So whether you come to relax under the palms on one of Puerto Viejo's beautiful beaches or try and tackle the surf at Salsa Brava (just 100 yards away) or Cocles, there is also great snorkeling and diving in the areas active coral reefs. Or how would you like to hike and bike through the jungle? There is also excellent white-water rafting in the area. It is all possible here. Puerto Viejo is also conveniently nestled between two of the area's most beautiful national parks where white-faced and howler monkeys, toucans and sloths abound. You will also want to come just to sample some of the area's famous dishes like the Caribbean-style rice and beans made with coconut and many other exquisite varieties of food in this little village.

What makes this property unique

Cocles Beach is the winner of the highly coveted Costa Rican government Blue Flag for pristine beach and is the only lifeguard-protected beach on the Caribbean Coast. The golden sands meet the warm Caribbean ocean and from the beach no buildings are visible. This beach has both great surfing at one end and safe swimming for families with children at the other. Please note that the route to the beach from the beach gate goes through a small strip of jungle (about 10 metres in width). This is national park and therefore cannot be cleared, so at times it can be over grown. If guests have mobility issues, the beach can be easily accessed from the main house gate, where the beach can be reached by just a short two minute walk along a small lane.
