About this property
Little Gem - Thoughtfully Curated Desert Escape
Welcome to Little Gem in Tucson, Arizona.
A thoughtfully curated 1600 sq ft home with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on a beautifully landscaped corner lot. Two separate living rooms, full kitchen, three dining areas, covered front porch, seasonal hot tub, bike port and a covered back patio with mountain views of Mt Lemmon.
While the home may be listed as contemporary southwest, it is full of thoughtful design styles inside and out that makes this home truly one of a kind. We designed our home with comfort in mind, as we spared no expense in offering plenty of comfortably designed space for you indoors and out.
Prior to entering Little Gem, you will be greeted by our iron rocking owl sculpture that when the wind blows in, it causes it to sway and flap its large wings. You might also hear the sounds of our real neighborhood owl. After the Amazon Rainforest, Tucson has more bird species than anywhere else in the world. Crazy right! Our property is perfect for viewing diverse bird species such as gambel's quails, mourning doves, cactus wrens and many more. The early morning sounds of birds chirping and cooing, owls hooting and woodpeckers pecking throughout our property never gets old. You might even catch a pack of javelinas traveling through the back of our property. If you see them, grab some fruit from our orange and grapefruit trees and toss them a couple.
In our backyard, you can catch some rays in our sunbathing chaise loungers. Take a nap in our covered porch on one of our two hanging basket chairs. It's also a great spot to enjoy your morning coffee, or if it's 5:00 somewhere, a cocktail. If you enjoy alfresco dining, we have you covered on that also with our outdoor dining table in our covered porch off the back of the family room. You can close all the patio curtains for a more private experience, or keep them open to enjoy views of Mt. Lemmon. At night, enjoy star gazing in the hot tub.
Hot Tub is Seasonal: The hot tub is open September through May.
Past our backyard is a private space that is separated by a retaining wall, ocotillo fencing and a gate that we call our farm. It's where our RV camper lives, along with our lemon trees and barn (it's really just a shed!). Feel free to grab some oranges or grapefruits from the trees anytime. It's also where our smoking area is.
Our family room is the perfect room to Netflix and chill or have a game night with your friends or family. Right off the kitchen and with access to the backyard and hot tub, open up all the windows and enjoy an indoor/outdoor living experience. Off the family room is also our bike port where after biking around Tucson or riding The Loop you have an easy place to park and store your bikes during your stay. It's also a great spot to store strollers or other bulky items you might be traveling with. We do not offer bikes in our listing, but you can rent bikes for a day or the duration of your stay from Tucson Mountain Bike Tours & Rentals, which is only a mile away.
If cooking is your thing, Trader Joe's and other local grocery stores are less than a mile away, or there is a Whole Foods about 3 miles away. The kitchen is equipped with an induction cook top with the appropriate cookware, a built-in wall oven, microwave, drip coffee maker, blender, toaster oven and electric kettle. If making your own coffee or tea is not your thing, there are a ton of local coffee shops (including Starbucks), all less than a mile away.
If you're like us, grab some takeout from a local restaurant and eat comfortably in one of our three dining areas. Did you know that Tucson became a City of Gastronomy? A distinction given out by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Tucson is the first place in the United States to be honored with the Capital of Gastronomy designation.
Use our guest PC desktop computer for light internet browsing, or bring your own computer to work in any of our spaces. It's slow, but it's there if you need it.
There are three bedrooms, two of them with kings beds and one with two twin beds and an air mattress. We do not provide extra sheets for the air mattress. The primary bedroom offers a small en-suite bathroom, while the other two bedrooms share the bathroom off the main hallway.
There is no smoking or vaping allowed in the house or on any of the porches. We've created a designated smoking area past our backyard and through the back gate, away from the home and our neighbors.
We do have a washing machine and dryer on site. Guests will have to request access to it prior to use.
Having a car is the easiest mode of transportation to get around the city. If you are avid bicyclists, like us, our home located off of the 3rd Ave Bikeway that can take you east to The Chuck Huckelberry Loop or west to the UofA or downtown. Our home has a covered carport along with additional parking in the driveway and free street parking. With our central location, it's easy to get anywhere in Tucson. Our home is a 15-minute drive to the UofA, 20-minute drive to Downtown Tucson, 20-minute drive to Catalina Foothills and Sabino Canyojn, 30-45 minute drive to Saguaro National Park West, 20-minute drive to Saguaro National Park East.
We are lovers of design and artists ourselves. The art in our home is a reflection of us and our personalities. If you are interested in purchasing any of the art you see in our home, please send us a message of what piece you are interested. We would be happy to give you some details and pricing.
Whether you choose to stay at Little Gem or elsewhere, we hope you enjoy your stay in Tucson.
The minimum rental age is 25. Great for couples, families, UofA visits, bicyclists & traveling medical professionals.

About the host
Hosted by David Schmidt

I am a photographer, entrepreneur, artist, husband and farmer! I grew up in Minnesota, and I was a Division 1 gymnast at the University of New Mexico, where I also received a BFA in photography. I live full time in Denver, Colorado with my husband Eddy on our hobby farm, Half Acre Farm. After opening my first photography studio in 2005 I've launched a variety of photography brands along with a custom frame shop that is owned and operated by Eddy.
Interior design is my passion, photography is my career and the desert has my heart. I’m happy you’re here! Say hi sometime.

Why they chose this property
I've always loved interior design for as long as I can remember. While my career path did not take me down that route, owning vacation rentals has become my outlet to fulfill that love.
What makes this property unique
Little Gem is the first of two vacation properties that I have been able to pour my heart into. I think you'll find it not only comfortable, but thoughtfully curated to fit anyone's taste.
