Great getaway cabin with lots of options nearby

Loved the beautiful cabin with all its amenities. We literally didn’t have to bring anything. We were about an hour’s drive away from the dells for our kids to enjoy, but also lots of beautiful nature and parks to enjoy nearby.

Wonderful stay!

We had a wonderful stay at this gorgeous property. Gary went above and beyond as a host and it was lovely to chat with him and get to know him and his family history. Beautiful views, excellent location for the state parks and the bike trail and the property is fantastic esp for family groups- so many wonderful touches for kids (therefore for parents, thank you!!). Don’t hesitate to book this fantastic listing!

Beautiful and peaceful

I loved all of the animals in the surrounding pastures. The house was well furnished. The beds were one of the most comfortable beds in a VRBO and we've stayed in a bunch. Easy communication with owner.

Beautiful home on hilltop with great views

We enjoyed your beautiful home; the decor and layout were well thought out. It was well stocked to meet our cooking and entertainment needs. As we had questions or concerns, your quick response was much appreciated. Our weekend included time on the Kickapoo River, hiking at Wildcat Mt State Park and a stop at Hillsboro Brewing Company. We highly recommend this property.

Fantastic Property

This cabin is amazing. It's almost brand new and all the furnishings are top notch. It's definitely a cabin, but has all the modern amenities you hope for. The kitchen is fully stocked, just bring your own food. The beds are super comfortable. There are plenty of games for the kids. Even the wifi is great. The owner was very communicative before we arrived, and he even stopped by after we arrived to say high and check in on us (and to make sure we had plenty of gas for the grill, which he refilled for us). Our goal for our stay was just to relax, and this cabin was perfect. We read books, gazed at the stars, roasted some marshmallows and made s'mores. It was a great couple of days with absolutely no agenda. Finally, I can't say enough about the AMAZING VIEW off the patio, which faces west. The owner's posting does not adequately describe just how amazing it is. Plus you can hear all kinds of wildlife. There are tons of birds and we also saw deer, rabbits, and of course cows. I highly recommend this cabin.

My Rental Experience to Date

This property was absolutely perfect for my family. Our three kids are very young, which usually limits how much we are really able to enjoy ourselves on vacation. We stress about all the things we need to bring and how to keep them busy. The owners of this cabin have stocked it with everything and anything you will need. Not only was there a toy basket, art supplies, and puzzles, but they also had a highchair, portacrib, crockpot, flour, sugar, and even a family recipe book. The thought that was put into catering to the needs of their guests is commendable. Now, about the actual cabin... It is Amish made and it is gorgeous 😍. I have new kitchen goals. Pictures do not do the island and countertops justice. The bathroom decor is moody and cozy. Everything was spotless. No matter your preference on the firmness of a mattress, there will be one that you like. The back deck faces the most beautiful hillside with grazing cattle and alpacas. We enjoyed seeing deer, bluebirds, and goldfinches while sipping our morning coffee. I've been to the Rockies, the Smokies, and the Swiss Alps. That hillside view is all I need. I can't wait to go back.

Great for a Business Outing

Our staff stayed here while on a business trip. It was a fantastic space, full stocked, so you don't have to worry about bringing any of the little utensils or even outdoor chairs. Even has a nice little backyard area that we used for games. There is a lot of room that you could host a good size group there. The layout is fantastic, they really put a lot of thought into the flow and it's big enough that everyone can have their own space but still feel together. Like the other reviews mentioned, the view is just incredible. Almost zero cars so you can listen and enjoy the silence of the area. Lots of wildlife in the area to enjoy. We saw many deer up and down the hills. The sunset over the horizon on the deck is just amazing. Our staff got to relax around the fire pit (gas fire). We drove a short 10 to 15 minutes to a nice (sort of 'secret') area of the Kickapoo River that you could swim in and enjoy the sand. We also found a hidden area to get to the Sparta Trail and Tunnel 2. The hosts were amazing anytime we asked for suggestions or ideas and would respond immediately, offer suggestions, and just be accommodating to every need. NOTE: There was no (mobile) signal [deadzone for coverage] for any of our staff but there was Wi-Fi (great thing to have) and it worked for emails, some streaming, and just browsing so that was awesome. Definitely a lifesaver. Definitely will find a time to stay again.

Beautiful Home and Amazing View

This rental was by far our favorite. If you book this home, you will not be disappointed! Not only are the new house, deck and view absolutely gorgeous, but the special touches and amenities were outstanding. Everything is fully stocked, organized, safe and exceptionally clean. As a mom of a toddler, I was super excited to see fully assembled pack n’ plays and toddler beds in the upstairs and downstairs closets. The kids enjoyed all of the board games and toys. The owners really make you feel at home and comfortable… they are kind, communication is great, and and you can tell they truly care about their guests. I’ve never slept so peacefully at a rental! Outstanding place! We will definitely be back!

Log Cabin on the farm

Quiet location, beautiful views, and brand new! Hosts were excellent! This cabin is a wonderful retreat! Our group went to this location since we were planning to ride the Elroy-Sparta trails. The thunderstorms changed our plans but we enjoyed games, movies and relaxing. We will definitely go back!

About the host

Hosted by Gary Von Ruden

Host profile image
Our family cabin, Ember Hills Lodge, was completed in January 2022. It was a collaboration between Gary and Cathy, their four children and their families. It is located on part of our family farm that has been in the Von Ruden family since 1865. Gary's grandparents lost the farm to the bank for about a month during the Great Depression. They were able to get the farm back with financial help from a neighbor. Gary and family are now third generation farmers and currently raise Angus beef and grow corn and alfalfa. Gary's Dad had two Belgian horses, where this cabin now sits. We hope you enjoy the cabin as much as we do!

Why they chose this property

We built Ember Hills Lodge as a place for our growing family to gather and make memories to pass through the generations.

What makes this property unique

Ember Hills Lodge is our newly built family log cabin. It features vaulted ceilings, all new furnishings and modern amenities, including a gas fireplace and heated floors in the lower level. Located on a rolling hill in a beautiful valley, enjoy a walk on our trail and taking in breathtaking sunsets and wide open sky for stargazing.
