About this property

Secluded Guest Cottage on West Arm of Walloon Lake

This 1600 square foot ranch style home has a walk out lower level that can accommodate up to 10 people located on a gentle slope approximately 170' from beautiful Walloon Lake amidst scenic mature forest. A 40’ spacious deck complete with table & chairs, makes for a perfect area to enjoy a dinner on a summer evening or check into work with our high speed fiber internet! Located next to the cottage is a picnic table, gas & charcoal grills & play area with swing set.

The Guest Cottage shares the 3-acre property with the Family Cottage which is located through the forest about 90’ away. No roads intersect the area between the cottages and the lakefront. Our cottages share 200’ of shore front; two swim rafts and a large, gorgeous dock offering plenty of room for you to enjoy the beautiful sunrises & a slip to moor your own boat. At the water’s edge a lounge deck with table and chairs and a small sandy beach area for children awaits you, your family & friends. Each cottage has its own tandem kayak & campfire pit to enjoy. The lake bottom is sandy with a gradual slope from the end of the dock outward.

Two Sears & Roebuck Cabins created the Guest Cottage by combining them into one. The upper level has an open floor plan with the original Douglass Fir floors including a fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar, kitchen table with built in benches and living room with comfortable swivel chairs, rocking chair & leather couch-with wainscoting throughout. The living room also has a wall mounted 50” TV & Blue Ray. Wainscoting continues in the upstairs bathroom & has a 4' shower. The three upstairs bedrooms-two with queen-sized beds and the third with 2 twin beds-all have ceiling fans.
The lower level is accessed from the living room by a spiral staircase or from the outside. A large, open family room has Cedar wainscoting, ceiling fans, a trundle bed (2 twin beds), and two love-seats, TV & DVD, along with a sitting area to enjoy our many board games. A bedroom is located off the family room has a queen bed, ceiling fan and adjoining bathroom with a tub/shower. The laundry room with a full-sized washer and dryer & wash tub is also located downstairs.

The cottage is non-smoking & has adjustable electric heat available in every room. Blankets, pillows, linens, and bath towels are furnished–please bring your own beach towels. No smoking, pets, firearms, fireworks, or additional guests living in campers are allowed to ensure a safe, comfortable environment for all. A local caretaker is on call and mid-week cleaning is also available for an additional cost.

If you are interested in booking the cottage, please feel free to contact us at the numbers below. To secure your date, a signed lease & deposit is required for rental. We welcome clean and respectful guests and look forward to making your next vacation a Walloon one!

We truly enjoyed our week in the guest cottage. They have this property very well set up to accommodate almost anything. Communication with the owners is like we have two new friends. Would stay again and already looking at the next trip.

Classic lake cabin in a great location
My wife, three kids, and I enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It’s located up a flight of stairs from the Walloon lakeshore. The dock is perfect for mooring a boat and swimming. The water shallow and crystal clear near the dock and shore. There’s also a floating swimming dock in deeper water. Lots of chairs and lounging options near the water. A great fire pit for s’mores. The cottage is what I would call a classic lake house. Not fancy, but perfectly well appointed for a week at the lake. The kitchen is well equipped, the beds are comfortable, the water pressure in the shower is good. There’s plenty of room for the family to spread out. The house is about 20 minutes from Boyne City and is close to Petosky and Charlevoix. Check out Red Mesa and Santé restaurants in Boyne City. Marty and Frank are great hosts, too. This was our second time staying at one of their houses. I would stay here again.

3rd stay!
We love this property. The walk to the lake is not for the faint of heart. Such a great workout at 70 steps each way! We love feeling like we are in a "tree house". Marty is a fabulous host who takes great care in the upkeep of her families' property. Everything is well maintained! Her dock system at the waterfront is top notch and one of the biggest reasons we choose to come back. Our third stay with the Moyer family properties!

Lovely home on the best lake location
The Moyers have made their summer home on this beautiful, large wooded property since 1982. Their guest house is homey, spotlessly clean, and equipped with everything our family needed for our week on Walloon. They live on the property so were available to help with anything we needed, including docking our boat. They went above and beyond to make sure our stay was both pleasant and safe. Best hosts ever!

Our second year at the Guest Cottage.
The time we have spent at the Guest Cottage has been a lovely experience for my entire family. The cottage is well equipped and clean with lots fo room for a large family. The owners did a wonderful job providing all we needed. The waterfront is clean and well supplied. The proximity of the surrounding communities, restaurants, and attractions also help to make it a full and very enjoyable time away. We are looking forward to returning.

Beautiful Location on Walloon Lake
Overall, we had a mixed time at the Guest Cottage. Great parts: Walloon Lake is gorgeous! The shared dock, water access, beach, camp fire area are incredibly well put together. There is a small sandy area "beach" for young children to enjoy, with some rocks at the immediate shoreline. However, using the dock access, there is a completely sandy and superb swimming area starting about 10 feet out from the shoreline that extends a long ways before getting too deep. We had a blast swimming here as a family! I would give the beach, swimming and boating area 5/5! Note: There are stairs to get down to the beach, but our family aged 5-60 had no trouble. The guest cottage itself can at times feel tight, but promotes you going outside, which is what you should do at such a beautiful spot. There is a spacious outdoor deck to eat meals and enjoy nature. The spiral staircase to the lower level has very secure locks for the little ones, which was great. The reviews of the beds in the upstairs was that they were functional, nothing great, but not bad. Unfortunately, the disappointing part of the trip was for those of us who stayed in the walk out lower level. Our first night, the downstairs bed was so lumpy/rolly/mushy, my wife actually rolled off as we both went to lay down. For the rest of the trip, I slept on the trundle bed (best sized for a child, not grown man, lol) to try and give her more comfort (8mo pregnant at the time). The other unfortunate part of the lower level, was the significant humidity and dampness. We did visit during hot, 85F humid days, but sheets felt wet when you went to lay on them, clothes too after 1 day, and everything developed a general damp/musty odor. A dehumidifier was running, but could not keep up. Certainly, the unseasonably warm weather played a role, but it is never to fun to settle into clammy sheets. All told, my wife and I slept so miserably for the first few nights of the trip and despite the beauty of the location, we ended up leaving 2 days early due to sheer exhaustion. Our strong recommendation would be to have a new bed placed in the downstairs bedroom if possible because this seriously detracted from what would have otherwise been a great vacation. A second dehumidifier may be helpful too. (I fully anticipate the owners will listen to this feedback, as they were great to work with for booking and clearly take a lot of pride in maintaining their beautiful property).

Nice property, but not a nice owner
We had a nice week as a family on Walloon Lake. The dock was great! We brought our boat. The bungees they have there for guest boat are a great idea. The cabin is in a very secluded spot in the woods. If you arrive at night, it is difficult to find. But once you arrive, its cozy! Several homes use a single driveway which make it a little confusing on the drive in the dark. But we found our way. We kenneled our dog at Paws and Claws in Harbor Springs for the week. They were awesome! I highly recommend. On the way out, the cleaning crew saw that we had a dog with us and reported back to Marty. This is where the unpleasantries started. I had not filled out the pet addendum as described in the contract. Marty emailed me with a request to show proof that we had our dog kenneled for the week. I explained the dates and times and emailed my receipt for proof that he was in fact kenneled for the week. I admitted that the dog was in the cabin overnight (we arrived at midnight) until I could get him to a kennel in the morning. This to Marty meant that I owed her hundreds of dollars. She admitted the dog did no damages and reported no hair or even paw prints in the cabin. I have a specific breed of dog, Golden Doodle F2B. This breed is a well known for being non-shedding and hypoallergenic. We would have filled out the pet addendum and had him stay if we were not going to be on the boat and on the water all week. No pet addendum and Marty became condescending and just plain nasty in her email exchange. Telling me what I need to read up on as a physician. Telling me that I need to read more clearly. Telling me that I probably scam people all the time. Her emails were outlandish and became clear to me that I was dealing with an unreasonable person. Marty continued her attempt to shake me down for hundreds of dollars. I already paid her thousands for the week. Her emails were completely inappropriate. If Marty sends you bullying and toxic emails following your stay, I would highly recommend holding your ground and not putting up with this nonsense. The post-stay email exchange was unpleasant enough that we would not rent from Marty again.

Amazing Weekend Getaway
This cottage was amazing! We rented for 3 nights over Labor Day weekend and had a blast! The cottage itself is very spacious and slept 8 of us very comfortably. The upper floor has 3 bedrooms---1 bedroom had two twin beds and the other 2 bedrooms had full/queen beds which can easily sleep 2. The bottom floor had 1 bedroom with a full/queen bed and ample space for multiple air mattresses if needed. There were 2 full bathrooms--1 upstairs, 1 downstairs. The entire cottage was very, very clean! This cottage is not handicap accessible which Marty mentioned before we booked and he wasn't lying! The staircase to the downstairs area is very steep but has a gate to prevent young children or animals from going down. Then, there are many steps down to the camp fire/dock area. The steps are well maintained and very easy to manage for able-bodied people. While we didn't mind, expect to be "disconnected" while enjoying what Northern Michigan has to offer! The cottage does not have Wi-Fi and has limited TV channels. It was a great break from the everyday hustle and bustle! We rented a pontoon boat and had the ability to dock it right at the cottage but decided to only rent for 1 day. Walloon Lake is beautiful and not busy at all...even on a holiday weekend. None of us had boating experience so it was nice that the lake wasn't crowded. It was a bit chilly so that could have kept people off the lake as well. Petoskey is a small town right down the road and had great restaurants and a Meijer for grocery shipping! We spent 1 day on Mackinac Island which is a short hour drive (and a ferry ride) from the cottage. You really can't get a better location! We wish we would have spent a week or more exploring the area and enjoying the cottage! We will definitely return next year but will try to book in July/August as the weather in early September can get chilly. Marty was extremely easy to work with and was available for questions at any time. I would highly recommend booking this cottage! Enjoy Pure Michigan!

Great family gathering spot
We had a family reunion take place on this property and it couldn't have been better! There were places to gather as a big group and as smaller groups to get caught up with everyone. The cottage had everything we needed and the waterfront was enjoyable for our youngest to splash around and for all to take in the scenic lake views. Would highly recommend this spot and hope to come back ourselves.

The guest cottage is the perfect way to relax at Walloon. The cottage is cozy and has everything needed for a vacation at Walloon. It was clean and well kept. Great family vaction!
Marty and Frank, Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful lake cottage. Everyone had so much fun and everything was perfect. We had a great time playing on the water and boating to Barrel Back restaurant for a wonderful dinner. The cottage was so clean and the beds were very comfortable. The cottage was stocked perfectly, utensils and pots and pans, dishes were all in abundance and in perfect condition. Great mooring for our boat and really nice dock and fire pit , with plenty of chairs, Frank even brought down fire wood for us. First time for us on Walloon Lake and it is beautiful, we highly recommend Marty and Franks cottages, felt more like home than a rental. Thanks Mike, Laurie and family!

Beautiful stay on Walloon Lake
Our family of 10 (2 grandparent, 4 adults, 4 kids) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Guest cottage. Our kids were constantly on the swim platform, and the dock and access to the kayaks made for many hours of fun right at the cottage. We did everything from chilling at the cottage to visiting Mackinaw Island to canoeing on Jordan River. It was such a relaxing vacation and working with Marty was a breeze - very responsive!

Awesome family lake vacation
We rented both the family and guest cottages for our rather large family for a week. It was fantastic. Everyone loved it and believe me we have some picky people in our group! Perfect lake vacation..we spent most of our time on the dock!! Cottages were very comfy with plenty of bedrooms and a few steps from the lake. Walloon is a beautiful large clear lake...swimming kayaking skiing..we did it all. The owners are great people who are very responsive and friendly. Really, What else could you ask for? We already booked for 2017. Highly recommended.

Host profile image
My husband & I live in Colorado & the kids are grown, so we don't get to enjoy the cottage as often as we would like. So, we thought we would share this magical place with others allowing them to make Walloon a tradition & create fond memories that will last a lifetime.

Why they chose this property

My family lived in Ann Arbor, but my sister, mom & I would always spend our summers at my grandmother's cottage in Minnesota. My dad decided to buy the property on Walloon Lake so we could spend more time together. After an exhaustive search of other lakes, we found that none could hold a candle to beautiful Walloon. We were all enchanted by the beautiful Caribbean turquoise blue color of the lake and the big, beautiful Hemlocks, Beech, Maple & Birch trees on the property. The 200' of shoreline & 3 acres gave us lots of room to play, explore & relax. The property initially had 2 small Sears & Roebuck cabins on it-that we later joined & modified to create the guest cottage after we finished building the family cottage.

What makes this property unique

Some of our favorite things to do at the cottage are: watching the sunrise over the quiet, glassy lake; water skiing; swimming; kayaking; tubing; fishing; sailing; exploring the woods & looking for morels; laying on my back looking up through the tree limbs to the tree tops-marveling at their size; curling up with a good book in front of the fire; picking cherries at a nearby orchard; taking a nap on the porch; grilling an evening meal & enjoying it on the patio overlooking the lake; looking for satellites, falling stars & the northern lights on the dock; and our favorite of course...good conversation & drinks around the campfire with friends & family while enjoying s'mores :)
