About this property

Single family home, but space for 2 families or multigenerational stays!

Looking for a restful vacation, with just enough to keep the family entertained, but not be overwhelmed with crowds and traffic? Located on a quiet island, just off the North Carolina Coast, this comfortable, 3 bedroom, 4 bath home is over 2300 square feet.

This house has 2 unique features - it is sound front with a private walkway through the woods to the private pier into the sound - perfect for fishing, swimming, kayaking, safe for kids! no competition from other folks! and it has 2 separate living areas - the top (3rd) floor is the main living area (more details to come!) while the ground floor is a great room with queen futon and dressers, and living area with couch, loveseat, entertainment center, full bath,(when folks need a little space, or quiet, or you have teens or a couple who would like a little privacy)

A few more details -The top (3rd!) floor is the main living area, opening onto a sound front deck, with Adirondack chairs, and a grill. (and spectacular views!) The interior includes an open space kitchen, counter bar with 4 seats, dining area that seats 8, a full bath, and 2 separate seating areas! The main seating area includes traditional seating (couch, 2 side chairs), a large screen LG smart TV - (there is Spectrum internet to operate TV's, games, etc.). Off to the side, also facing the sound, is a reading/sleeping area. It has a queen sized sleeper futon, and 2 comfortable chairs and a bookshelf - (this is a public space and offers NO privacy - perfect for teens or kids, or the early riser in the family).
The kitchen is equipped with all standard appliances and dishes/silverware, pots and pans for feeding your crowd. You will also find enough basics - paper towels, TP, paper plates/cups, dish soap, laundry soap, coffee, sugar, etc -(you get the picture!) so you don't need to dash off to the store.

The middle floor has 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths. - complete with towels and clean linens! All bedrooms come with flatscreen TV's with Roku/internet access. (Please use your own credentials for specialty TV channels) The master has a queen sized bed and a 4 piece, ensuite, with jetted tub and 5 foot shower! The 2nd bedroom also has a queen sized bed. Both open onto the middle sound side deck with outdoor seating. The 3rd bedroom has a bunk with a "full" sized bottom and a single upper. These bedrooms 2 and 3 share a nice sized full bath. The washer and dryer are on this floor for handy access.

The ground floor can be used almost as a separate suite. It has a queen sized sleeper futon, a full bath, and a separate TV/living area with sofa and loveseat, as well as access to the backyard. It has interior stairs to the top 2 floors but if needed, the other floors can be accessed by the outside decks..

The home's private pier leads to the sound for fishing, clamming, sailing. It is a little shallow for larger speedboats, except at high tide,. (We do NOT provide any recreational vehicles......) There is a local marina just 1 mile away in Salter Path (Indian Beach) where you launch water vehicles....and a rental place less than 2 miles away.

And there's more!....Entertainment!

The ocean/beach access is just 3 tenths of a mile away in Salter Path. It is recommended that folks with small children drive and make the 3 minute trip with toys, chairs, etc. since it is on the main road. It is a well-kept secret, because even on holiday weekends, it is easy to find parking and a 'spot' on the beach with some space to spread out your towels, and family - no "elbow to elbow", listening to someone else's music. It has outside showers, restrooms, and grills, and a good number of parking spaces, many of which are shaded. The beach is wide and sandy, and the water has a gradual slope out, providing lots of safe places to swim and skim board. (The house has an outside shower with hot and cold water to rinse off sandy feet.)

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is just 2 miles away and provides wonderful viewing, touch tanks, nature trails, as well as programs for all age levels!

A small amusement park and 2 theaters are within a few minutes drive and provide change of pace activities when you a need a break from the sun, sea and salt. There also golf courses -https://www.emeraldislerealty.com/blog/top-emerald-isle-nc-area-golf-courses

Everything you would need for a quiet vacation is less than 15 minutes away

Morehead City, Cape Carteret, and Beaufort are small nearby (less than 20 miles!) towns with lots of charm, as well as art galleries, local museums, antique stores and upscale shopping. New Bern, NC - the first NC state capital- is 45 minutes away and has a real castle, and many historic amenities.

We do not wish to be rude or unwelcoming, but.....
WE DO NOT RENT TO GROUPS OF UNRELATED FOLKS.
And a Disclaimer:
Please be aware that we are in a private subdivision and are responsible to our HOA. There is limited parking - 3 in the driveway, 1 on the street - max..... (YOU MAY NOT PARK IN ANY NEIGHBOR'S DRIVE WHETHER THEY APPEAR TO BE AT HOME OR NOT!)

Great Trip!

We enjoyed our vacation here! Very nice area and neighborhood. The house was perfect for our large group. Everyone had space and their own bathrooms. The men enjoyed fishing from the private pier. The fishing was great. Loved having a full kitchen to cook all our meals. Would definitely book again! The wash machine was not clean and smelled when we arrived however we ran a cleaning cycle and had no issues.

Amazing!

Great location, the kids could play in the sound on rough beach days and the beach access was super close to the house. I will say the public access itself is a bit of a hike for carrying several items so we drove down to the Clamdigger public access and that was easier for us and free parking with a short walk. We absolutely loved the house with room to spread out since there were 10 of us. We would love to book it again for next year!

4 teens and grandparents getaway

Perfect place to stay with room for our privacy and their boundless energy! The layout gave two teen girls privacy and room to be noisy on the lower level. The other two teens were on second level but no noise heard from them in the master bedroom for us. The upper level great for together time and meals. The neighborhood itself is quiet and within easy drive to activities and restaurants. Great place for mixed ages and even two families.

Soundfront value

Excellent value for a soundfront house. The dock is a great place to spend time and launch paddle sports from. Views of the sound and ocean from the top floor. Not a fancy house but homey and comfortable. Salter Path beach access is a two minute drive and wonderful, with bathrooms and free parking.

Beach weekend

This house is everything it says in the listing! Right on the sound with room to swim. If you’re planning on swimming in the sound, bring water shoes as there are lots of shells near the pier. The public ocean access is very close and wasn’t crowded at all. Plus there were bathroom and an outdoor shower so the kids didn’t have to get in the car sandy. The whole house was clean and there were lots of towels and washcloths. Staying here made a great weekend!

Outstanding Beach Vacation

Our family had a fantastic time at Jane’s beautiful home. Plenty of space- the pictures are accurate and it’s a perfect set up for a couple of families to get together and not feel crowded. It has all the extras for cooking at home after a day at the beach, and the deck chairs are perfect for post-dinner relaxation. Jane was wonderful to work with - communicative, thoughtful, and quick to respond to questions. Overall, an outstanding beach vacation.

Filthy

We didn’t last even 2 hours and had to leave. The floors were stained and clearly haven’t been cleaned in a long time. Immediately entering there was a stench of mildew which continued in every room and the washer smelled like mold. The sheets looked unwashed. My 1 year start to break out in hives so I sent my family to the car while I took pictures of all the stains and damages before we found a new place to stay.

Just Perfect

This house was perfect. The pier/ dock was the highlight of our stay. Private and the views from the house and pier are breathtaking. The pictures do it no justice. Wonderful Stay!

We loved our stay at this property. Being able to catch views of the sound and ocean from the top level was a real treat. We really enjoyed the property's soundfront pier, watching the sunset, and staying up late into the evening catching up with family with our water view. The closeness to ocean access was super. The long boardwalks were a little workout, but it was great to be able to have my mother (in her 70's) get so close to the water before having to do battle with walking through sand. This was a great place for our family to connect. . . what a special time we had here!

Beautiful Sunsets

Our large family found this to be a perfect fit. Some of our children preferred the lovely dock and kayaking on the sound. The dock is a peaceful place for sitting and enjoying the outdoors. Some preferred the beach, which is a VERY short car ride. A couple of times we needed to text the owner, they were super quick in responding. We would definitely recommend this house.

Ok place

overall it was a decent place and met our needs. We did have to go buy disposable drain snakes to snake hair monsters out of all the tubs. It would be helpful to mention how difficult it is to get kayaks, or anything else for that matter, to the sound or the beach.

Beautiful Stay

We thoroughly enjoyed our time staying in this wonderful home. We fished off the dock and took the short drive to the public beach access many times. The house has so much room and the 3rd floor was perfect for family time. If you are not used to a multi-story home be prepared. We were sore from the steps after the first day. However, we would not change a thing and Jane was a wonderful host! 5 STARS from the Ashley Family.

About the host

Hosted by Jane Shrader

Host profile image
We are retired teachers with a large family, children and grandchildren! The house is great for all ages, and offers room to spread out.

Why they chose this property

We have been the only rental in a small private subdivision until recently.
Even then, there is only one more. Which means, no crowds, no cars, no late night partiers. It makes it great for folks just wanting a quiet vacation with their kids.
And we love the access. We have the best of the island - sound and ocean access. Short distances to whatever you want to do or need.

We have always loved this series of beaches best! We have vacationed on the North Carolina beaches, from the Virginia to the South Carolina borders. But we have found the water here to be perfect, even on the roughest of days and we have felt safe for our small children (and now grandchildren!) to play in the water. It is rarely crowded, and the beaches are always clean and well maintained.

Being "soundside" allows us waterfront access with a pier, and great sunset views. It is a great - and safe - place for children to play safely in the water, away from the breakers. You can fish from our pier, although it is best suited for beginners. We have recently learned that fall and spring tides and fish migration have brought larger fish into our area..

We designed the house to share with friends. The extra living area on the first floor has been ideal for teenagers, young couples, or grandparents. It allows folks to spread out a little and do their own thing.

And we love the local access to dining and entertainment without fighting the crowds.

What makes this property unique

The center of the island is rarely crowded, and we have privacy in our subdivision. We can play in our backyard, wander in the sound, but have easy access to a small amusement park, the state aquarium, and several historical sites. Deep sea fishing and charters are near-by, and lots of local restaurants.

The "reverse" design -putting the living area on the top floor - allows for great views, and a sense of wonder, living above the noise. You really feel like you are away from it all.
