Large Private Tuscany Villa Near Florence Pool Fireplace Superb Views Location

Recommended by Condé Nast as one of the most beautiful home-stays in Italy with a pool.

THE BEST VILLAS IN ITALY TO RENT: 13 BEAUTIFUL HOMESTAYS

Villa is completely private-it is NOT an Agriturismo (Farm Stay Property) where you share the pool, gardens and common areas with other guests.

Poggio Canali is an exquisitely restored 500 year old stone Tuscan villa superbly located in the heart of the famous Chianti Tuscany countryside, conveniently close to Florence, Siena and Tuscany's most beautiful hill top towns. Our country house is perched on a hilltop at the end of a tranquil country road and has stunning classic Tuscany views over distant vineyards, castles and estates.

Enjoy a glass of Prosecco while watching beautiful sunsets from our terraces, gardens and pavilion. We also have a new pool with glorious views. A large beautifully carved stone fireplace makes our villa perfect in any season.

Our large 500 year old stone country house-villa (230 square meters or 2, 475 square foot) has been lovingly and completely restored to the highest standards and in keeping with the beautiful Tuscan aesthetic. It is superbly located 20 minutes south of Florence (direction Siena) in classic Tuscan Chianti countryside and is surrounded by rolling hills, tree lined valleys, olive groves, vineyards, castles and renaissance villas.

*Please note, this is a private villa, you do not share our private facilities, gardens and grounds with other guests as with many cheaper Italian rentals. Our house is quiet-at the end of a country road, and it is not isolated as there are two very nice non intrusive Italian families that live close by in the neighboring properties.

The villa has large spacious bedrooms and living areas, antiques, stone floored bathrooms with high quality fittings, four poster beds in every room and traditional architectural elements including a hand carved large fireplace and ancient wooden beamed ceilings as well as a sensitive restoration of original doors and windows.

The villa is on four levels and has traditional terracotta flooring throughout. The villa comes with fine furnishings and linens as well as antiques and high quality home wares including ceramics, cutlery and all new superb quality European kitchen appliances. It has three large double bedrooms, three bathrooms with the highest quality fittings; two large lounge rooms, (sleeps up to 8) and one large eat in kitchen as well as a separate laundry.

The bedroom layout is- bedroom 1: One large master bedroom with large double queen sized four poster bed and ensuite bathroom with walk in wardrobe. Bedroom 2: One large double bedroom with queen sized four poster bed and an extra single bed. Bedroom 3: One large bedroom with double four poster bed. One Folding baby travel cot available if required.

Local artisans have handcrafted to order fine furniture and fittings in traditional style including an iron four poster bed and an antique style traditional kitchen dresser. Out door areas include a large 'loggia' (traditional covered veranda with oak beams and terracotta floors) with beautiful views. The loggia has a large gourmet BBQ as well as a large iron antique table with wooden top (seating 10) with iron patio chairs and outdoor divan lounge. Off the loggia in front of the house is a large ancient stone court yard, a separate oak beamed pavilion with lounge seats and table with iron balustrade and beautiful views. The courtyard also comes with a medieval stone well and troughs and leads onto a lower court yard and terrace, a forest area with oaks, private gardens and a large above ground pool.

The garden is planted in traditional Tuscan style with olive trees, lavenders, rosemary, traditional old style roses and pomegranates and many perfumed plants.

All the rooms and gardens have beautiful views of the Tuscan countryside as the villa is situated on a hill and overlooks grand historical estates such as the 1,000 year old Castle of Bibbione, mentioned in Salman Rushdie's latest book 'The Enchantress of Florence'.

We also have a new pool with large reclining teak lounge chairs set on a hillside with beautiful views.

We can also help with planning your stay in Tuscany through that can also give 10 % off any bookings you make for tours and experiences.

Doesn't get better than this

My wife and I and our grown up kids and boyfriends had a wonderful stay at Poggio Canali in July. During the heatwave in Italy with temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius this hilltop estate was a perfect home for us when exploring the beautiful Chianti region. When we returned mid afternoon from our day tours to hilltop villages and wineries, the shaded areas in the courtyard and the new pool with their view of the vineyards were the perfect places to relax. The description and photos on the site are a very fair reflection of this property - the owner, Rose, and her husband have with great taste and attention to detail turned this century old house into a home with all modern amenities while keeping the original look and feel of a Tuscan farmhouse. Michelle, the friendly English speaking housekeeper, who greeted us upon arrival ensures that everything is well maintained and clean. Rose provided us with a long list of suggestions for things to see and do, which is a good source of inspiration if you don't already have a plan for what to see in Chianti. Every other night, we prepared our own dinner on the barbeque in the courtyard, enjoying wines we had purchased at local wineries. Other nights, we dined at good local restaurants of which there are several in the nearby town San Casciano in Val di Pesa, a 6-7 minute drive from the house. Cantinetta del Nonno serves an excellent Steak Florentine and Gallo Gialo, which is just 2 minutes from the house, takes the prize for the best Tiramisu we have ever had in Italy (and we have vacationed here many times over the past twenty years). We will definitely come back to Poggio Canali next time we have chance.

Perfect Location

Our family of six thoroughly enjoyed our time at the villa. Quiet, peaceful and yet a perfect spot for several day or afternoon trips. We went to the market in Greve one morning, biked through Florence one afternoon, had dinner in San Gimignano one evening and went truffle hunting another morning...all short drives from this wonderful villa!

Great villa down a rustic road

We really enjoyed our stay but be prepared for a Mr. Toads wild ride down the dirt road that is about 1 KM from the paved road. The house is nice and the beds comfortable. They could do a little better on cleaning between guests. Many dishes needed to be rewashed. Several really good restaurants within 1 to 2 km from the house. All serve amazing Tuscan food with local wines. Call the Principe Cassini to see if they are serving dinner during your stay. A very small osteria that serves great food and really good wine. You pay the same price for wine as you would buying it in the wine shop.

Beautiful spot and Rose is great

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in July. We had a couple of minor electrical issues but Rose was quick to see that they were remedied. Rose also provides a fantastic amount of information about restaurants and things to do in the area.

An Ideal Country House in Tuscany

This past May my family of five spent six delightful days at Poggio Canali. We could not have found a more ideal villa or location from which to explore Tuscany. Having spent several days in Venice, we were looking forward to having a bit more room and being surrounded by beautiful countryside, and Poggio Canali surpassed our expectations in every way. Upon arrival we were greeted by Rose, the owner, and Michele, the caretaker, who gave us an orientation to the house and environs. Indeed, months before our trip Rose provided a comprehensive list and review of local restaurants, wineries, markets, shops, sites to see, and other general information about the Chianti region. We arrived at Poggio Canali shortly after a storm had passed through the area and knocked out the WiFi connection in the house. To the relief of my three adult children, Rose provided us with a temporary mobile hotspot so they could still connect to the internet! Both Rose and Michele could not have been more friendly and accommodating to our needs during our stay. Michele is also an accomplished chef, and we wish we had been able to stay a few more days at Poggio Canali so that he could have cooked us a meal from one of his many extensive menus. This renovated country house is beautifully furnished and decorated, well-equipped with modern amenities, and is also very comfortable, with a big open kitchen and adjoining sitting area on the first floor, and another large sitting area upstairs, which was a nice spot for relaxing and reading before bed. The views of rolling hills, villas, vineyards and olive groves from the house, large courtyard and pool patio are truly breathtaking, and the location is perfect for visiting Florence, Siena, Pisa and the multitude of enchanting hilltop towns in Tuscany. I recommend Poggio Canali without reservation, only wish we could have stayed longer, and hope to return some day. Thank you, Rose, for sharing your wonderful house with us.

Wonderful old farm house in a great remote location!

Two couples stayed for 8 days September 2016. Rose and Michele met us at the property for a thorough check in. Both were very attentive and responsive to our needs throughout our stay and helpful with questions about the house and our travel area. The house is as represented in HomeAway. I would definitely rent from Rose again!

Poggio Canali was fantastic!

So many great things to say about our experience with the owner and the property itself.. The location, the views, the amenities...all very impressive. Poggio Canali is very well situated for a relaxing and adventurous visit to Tuscany. Everything worth exploring is within a 2 hour day trip. I would recommend this property to friends and families!

Perfection In Tuscany

This is what dreams are made of! We were fortunate enough to spend a week of our honeymoon at Poggi Canali and I will for the rest of my life have fond memories of the gorgeous views and the villa itself. The villa is exactly as the pictures show-even better if that is possible. It was clean, well maintained and it was obviously lovingly maintained. Every detail was perfect-absolutely gorgeous. The views were unbelievable-everything I had dreamed of. The villa provides several areas to sit back, relax and absorb nature at its finest. The sunrise and sunsets were spectacular-pictures cannot do it justice. The location of the villa is somewhat remote; you have excellent privacy yet are close enough to the town. The most fantastic part is the villa is centrally located to so many incredible towns and villages-we were able to easily day trip to Siena, Cortona, Volterra and Greve to name just a few. As phenomenal as the villa were the owners themselves! Our honeymoon was made even more incredible with the assistance of Rose & Pierre. The recommendations they gave us were amazing. My husband is a chef and the restaurant suggestions were fantastic-a mix of "fancy" places mixed with "mom and pop" restaurants were offered; all of which were beyond expectations. They even went so far as to call and make reservations for us. They knew the best scenery spots, which towns offered what, even down to the best cheese maker around (if you like cheese go there-so worth it). I could go on & on about how amazing the villa and the owners are; I think I've run out of descriptive words already! Hands down, without a doubt, this was the vacation of a lifetime and I would (and will!) go back in a heartbeat. We cannot thank Rose & Pierre enough.

Picturesque, charming villa!

We stayed for a week at this charming villa and could not have been happier! The location made it accessible to major roads and towns, however, the villa itself is tucked away and quiet. The owners provided many helpful lists of their favorite local restaurants, wineries, cheese-makers, and attractions. The kitchen is spacious and we ate many meals with our group of 6 people there or on the large courtyard table. We didn't want to leave!

Amazing Villa

This villa is everything you could want. The owner is great, it is close to Florence, and the home is amazing. The home had plenty of room for the 6 of us that stayed. The viewing courtyard pavilion was amazing for sunsets. I would highly recommend this villa to a friend.

About the host

It really gives us great joy to try to achieve the breathing of life back into a building that had obviously been neglected for at least a century. We try to follow a personal aesthetic of what is for us a Tuscan ideal of combining modern needs with the intrinsic beauty of old stone Tuscan houses, which in this case was made by Tuscan peasants who obviously were not expert builders. So when we put in new windows we had the builders ‘wonkify’ them, using as a model, a window in the house with an uneven arch. The builders laughed when we asked them to please not make the plaster on the walls perfect, because to make it perfect would not be ‘in keeping’. Some of the artisans, particularly a wonderful local carpenter always takes our ideas very seriously and assiduously follows requests like finding old glass (replete with bubbles and deformations) to put in hand crafted furniture and windows for us, so they are ‘in keeping’.

We love Italian demolition yards and we appreciate the local artisan’s skills. We love the mark of an artisans hand to be apparent. We found an incredibly beautiful fireplace lying broken on the ground in a demolition yard near Carrara on the Tuscan coast. The owner assured us that they would fix it and that I would hardly see that it had been cracked in half, but for us, this made the piece more beautiful and authentic. The crack visible enhanced and aged the piece rather than detracting from it. It was carved by a young French sculptor from French limestone. In depth and very serious discussions followed about exactly what the appropriate aesthetic and placement of the fireplace should be with the passionately concerned owner of the demolition yard. That’s another thing we love about Italy; a deep respect for doing things well. I prefer not to use the local pietra serena for architectural features such a fireplaces as I find its greyness and texture depressing. So we raised some local artisan’s eyebrows choosing to use another stone.

Why they chose this property

Prime location in the heart of the most beautiful Chianti countryside but close to Florence's world famous museums and sights. We are surrounded by fabulous high quality Chianti Classico wine making estates, olive oil producers, Castles estates, a beautiful Abbey, stunning Villas and ancient stone Tuscan country houses. Our home is situated at the end of a quiet country lane just off the road from San Casciano to Mercatale, to the south of Florence. Our villa is perfect at any time of year having a beautiful pool and large fireplace and set amidst a gourmet paradise with great local producers of gourmet products nearby.

What makes this property unique

Our country house is surrounded by and overlooks the stunning estates of Prince Corsini and vineyards of famous superb quality wine producing estates such as Villa le Corti- a magnificent Corsini villa from the sixteenth century. Close by are fabulous restaurants, wine estates and historical monuments as well as Etruscan ruins. The wines of the Gabbiano Castle estate close by are also superb, as are the cellars of the Antinori estates attached to the ancient picturesque Abbey called Badia Passignano founded in the year 890. There also is a wonderful cheese producer (we like to call him the “Michelangelo’ of cheese makers) on a picturesque and ancient estate close by where you can drop in and taste the gourmet cheeses produced for some of Italy’s top restaurants. The country house is located in a kind of ‘slow food’ heaven where you could easily spend each day for a month sampling wonderful wines and local foods. Added to this, not only is the countryside authentic beautiful Tuscany but conveniently located close to the magnificent art city of Florence, with world famous museums, galleries and restaurants. The country house is also close to famous beautiful hill top towns such as San Gimignano and Siena. The area is where famous historical figures such as Machiavelli lived and worked and where artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Ghirlandaio crisscrossed the countryside in search of patrons for their work.

On the next hill are also horse riding facilities where you can wind your way through the local vineyards and cypress lined woods on well trained horses with instructors. The woods and rolling fields around the country house have many beautiful wildflowers where you can often see locals collecting delicious wild asparagus and salad greens.
