Victoria charm at the center of Shelter Island life
As it appears on-line, this home is a Victoria charmer with good size bedrooms and many porches and rooms for family to gather. The third and fourth bedrooms are a double room with a double bed for parents in the back room, and 3 twin beds up front--which could be ideal for some families with 2-3 kids sharing the home with one or two other families/couples. Kathryn and Dave could not have been more hospitable, nicer people to make arrangements with. The beach club was a great place for us all including a great playground (for little ones) to hang out, swim, lunch, and do 'sundowners' (adults). My lack of five stars is because the property is not in tip-top shape (which was fairly fine with me as a summer rental), and often felt a bit like camping out in an antiques shop. The second bathroom was off the kitchen away from bedrooms, and without a sink of its own. The kitchen was not one from which I would want to be making breakfast, picnic lunches and cooking dinner each evening. (If you go on vacation to eat out--please ignore this last comment!) This was, overall, to be clear, a delightful place to stay (10 days for us) in the summer. The porches off the two main bedrooms with large double doors meant we did not use A/C (which was there) but instead, we could relish the silent evenings and breezes and the birds and sunlight each morning. The house is walking distance to a) the North Ferry, b) the Post Office and two hardware stores, c) a few restaurants (Isola was especially good!), and d) the iconic Marie Effiel's for coffee, lunch, charcuterie, and top shelf cheeses and cooking supplies. This home would be particularly ideal if you are coming from NYC, take the Hampton Jitney (lux bus), and don't want to bother with a car rental. for a long weekend.
