Constance Ryland has been designing homes for over 15 years working at Colefax and Fowler, Marriott’s Portfolio of Homes + Airbnb. One of Constance’s great strengths is an ability to curate her clients’ taste rather than impose a look. She believes with any room, the PEOPLE in them are far more important than the content of the room themselves. What she craves is fewer anonymous homes; aiming for interesting spaces, brimming with personality, character and individual stories. Rooms where everything works together, however, nothing “matches”to avoid overly polished, “decorated-in-one-go” schemes. All whilst staying pragmatic: how one functions, works, and cooks. Equally important: how one relaxes, socialises and sleeps. Very early in her life and design career, Constance made it a personal challenge to work/design in as many locations/countries as possible. It breeds a certain adaptability which is key. As is conceptual and creative thinking. Constance is always seeking hidden design opportunities; objectively seeing a space from a different perspective than perhaps the client or architect. And whilst creativity might be the first skill people look for in a designer, Constance allows clients’ enough space to curate their own taste and imagination. Most importantly, Constance is a firm believer in interiors that don’t cost the earth. Born into a philosophy of “make do” versus buy new, in celebration of Fowler’s “humble elegance”, she strives to repurpose a home’s existing natural resources. Not only does that keep material costs to a minimum, it respects a client’s budget reality and the environment. For Constance, her design-led life-force has always been the continual renewal of inspiration; breathing that into clients, watching their layered stories unfold, making dated rooms smile once again.
Why they chose this property
We loved its gentle charm, closeness to the Thames, the beautiful architecture, the subtle rose garden smell, its quietness yet it's quick and easy access into London. It provides the best of all worlds. City life by day, country life by night.
What makes this property unique
Our house has been carefully curated and designed to a very high standard. We take great pride in keeping it well maintained, clean, and are constantly retouching the paint. It's colourful, cheerful and features many bespoke soft furnishing touches such as valances, headboards, and scatter cushions that add a softness and warmth. It's also just the right size. Cosy to make you feel snug at home, yet spacious enough for couples to spread out.
