About this property

Charming Cottage In Beautiful Howth, 25 Minutes From Dublin City Center

DATES NOW AVAILABLE IN JUNE AND JULY 2024 DUE TO RECENT CANCELLATION
Our charming 130-year old 2-bedroomed home, bright, welcoming and beautifully renovated, sits above the village of Howth, overlooking Howth Harbour and Ireland's Eye, the iconic island outside the harbor, just 9 miles from Dublin city center.

Howth is the scenic and recreational jewel of the Dublin area, sitting in a hilly peninsula on the north side of Dublin Bay with stunning views of the bay to the south and the coast line to the north. The harbor, with its two popular piers, includes a working fishing port as well as a large marina, and is an important sailing venue. The peninsula has a wide array of wonderful scenic walking paths over the hills and around the cliffs, and is popular with birdwatchers.

We believe that our house was built in or before 1895, but it has been extended and totally renovated, and includes all modern amenities. It is bright and fresh, with 2 bedrooms that can comfortably sleep 4 people, full bathroom, living room and a bright fully-fitted kitchen / dining room overlooking the garden. Total floor area is approx 1,000 sq ft. The garden includes a deck / patio and offers views of Howth Harbor and Ireland’s Eye. The front of the house has 2 parking spaces.

The house is 300 yards from Howth Village, including shops, church and bus service to the center of Dublin; 0.4 miles from Howth Harbour; 0.7 miles (12 minute walk) from the DART rapid transit rail station serving the center of Dublin and southern areas of the city; and 8.9 miles from Dublin city center.

Howth has 2 fine golf courses, numerous excellent restaurants, and the 15th century Howth Castle which includes its famed wild rhododendron gardens, which are open to the public in summer, and the National Transport Museum of Ireland. As can be expected in a fishing port, many of the restaurants are particularly noted for fine seafood. Howth also has several well-known pubs, including the Abbey Tavern, which is renowned nationally for Irish folk and traditional music, and is only 5 minutes’ walk from our house.

All this within 25 minutes of the center of Dublin!

If you wish to make a reservation, PLEASE tell us a bit about your trip, including who will be traveling with you, and what brings you to Ireland / Howth. Thank you!

Irish charm and hospitality.

Howth is a great place to stay when visiting Dublin. Transport links are excellent. The property was sparkling clean, comfortable and warm. We left a message for the property manager but our call was never returned hence the 1 star for that aspect.

Comfortable stay in Howth

Property is situated in a quiet part of Howth, quite high up above the old part of town, clean and tidy if a little tired. Convenient for trips into town for restaurants etc and the Dart, with a steep 15 min walk back up the hill. There is no essential ‘welcome pack’ of basics so be prepared to visit the shop on your first day. Overall, we had a very enjoyable and relaxing stay.

Already want to go back

Our Father-Son trip to Ireland was a complete success. We chose to stay in Howth, on the peninsula, instead of in Dublin, which was perfect for us as we love golf, hiking and a slower pace. Communication both before and during our trip with Peter was first-class. The apartment was very cozy and had a private little garden in the back. Situated on top of a little hill, it is very quiet, but still within easy walking distance of everything one needs - convenience store, grocery store, loads of good restaurants. The official starting point of the Howth Cliff Trail was only a 10 minute walk and multiple golf courses were within a 10 minute drive. We loved it and I hope to one day go back. Thank you!

Lovely cottage in a lovely village

From the outside the house looks very small and it is a surprise to step inside to a large, open, masterfully designed space. In spite of being part of the village thoroughfare I found the cottage quiet and peaceful. We had everything we needed for cooking and sleeping. The driveway was a challenge to park in and I appreciated the parking instructions. I parked on the road with no problem. We enjoyed our stay.

Howth Stay

Property is very comfortable, with everything you need, but is a good walk up a hill, so not suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

Lovely Cottage

It was a delightful place to stay, and like being at home. The kitchen was well equipped with a lovely little garden. The only problem was the parking as it is on the corner. We parked in another street and walked to and from the cottage most days.

My wife and I brought our two grand daughters for a short break to Howth. We really enjoyed staying in this bright, spotless well equipped and homely property and the girls particularly liked playing in the safe and secure back garden. We have stayed many times in the Howth/Malahide area and this occasion will be well remembered for our experience in this lovely accommodation.

Amazing Howth, Amazing Cottage.

This was our second time staying in this wonderful cottage, as per my last review, the cottage is amazing, really comfortable and very well furnished. The location is fabulous as you can walk to the village, which is awash with great pubs and restaurants. Howth is also a fabulous gateway for exploring Dublin City as it is very well served by public transport. All in all a five star stay and we will be back for a third visit.

Charming

Loved our stay at 1 Balglass Rd, Howth. The traditional Irish cottage is throughly modern, bright and warm inside. It contained everything we required and made our holiday. It was great eating breakfast with a view of the sea. The location was perfect with a lovely deli, florist, wine shop, boutiques, butchers, coffees shops just down the road. Howth is a great base to explore the Dublin area on a beautiful coast.

Charming, comfortable and welcoming.

This is a charming, comfortable, and welcoming cottage. Once we walked in the door we knew we had made a great choice. The cottage is incredibly clean. The open plan sitting room come kitchen is very well furnished and the fittings are very modern and everything you need is at your fingertips. The bathroom is very well laid out and the separate shower unit is fantastic. Both bedrooms are very well designed and very comfortable. The cottage is so conviently located, it is only about a seven minute walk to the village and all of its charms, from the lovely harbour wall walk, to coffee shops, restaurants and bars. Howth is a very special place and 1 Balglass Rd is the ideal place to explore all these charms, it is everything that is required in a holiday rental. We will definitely be back.

fantastic house, beautifully kept and great location

We loved our stay in Howth with our two young children. The cottage was so well presented, very clean and felt homely as well as being child friendly with a high chair, cot and a great bathroom. So central for shops and eats. A short drive from Malahide and also Dublin not too far away there was plenty to do. Fantastic Deli down the hill. Peter and Jane kept in touch in the run up to us going and provided a fantastic info booklet on the house and area, which made it all very easy. Would love to go back, highly recommend. Excellent!

We stayed in this beautiful cottage 8 days in August. We ( two adults and one 8 years old girl) are from Spain. This house is fantastic and comfortable. It has all the amenities we needed. There are a lot of brochures of Ireland. They are very useful. Howth is a charming village. We like walking and Howth has beautiful paths and amazing cliffs. We had a fantastic holidays in Irland. Thanks Peter & Jane.

Home away from home

A group of 4 of us embarked on a journey across Ireland. We couldn’t have picked a better location or host to house us than this. The location of the house is just far enough away to feel the serene peace, but close enough to easily get to the city Centre of Dublin. The house accommodated the 4 of us comfortably and felt like our own little home away from home. I would recommend this rental to anyone looking for the true Irish feel of living.

Lovely Place

We loved Howth. The house is in a great location to walk the area and feel like a local. Grocery store, restaurants, pubs, trails, and more just steps away. We had blue sky days and some rain but it was a lovely house in a lovely neighborhood. We didn't go into Dublin, but would recommend Howth as a base for touring the area.

About the host

Hosted by Peter and Jane Ahern

Host profile image
We are Peter and Jane Ahern. We both grew up and were educated in Ireland. We met when we both worked for the Irish government’s Industrial Development Authority (IDA Ireland), and got married in Dublin. Soon after that, we moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where we have lived for many winters! Our two children live and work in the Cleveland area but, from numerous visits though their lifetimes, they both know every inch of the Howth peninsula!

Why they chose this property

Jane grew up on the Howth peninsula and her mother and brothers still live there. Over our years in the US we have spent many wonderful vacations there with family and friends, enjoying the spectacular scenery and great social life. It was our dream to find a house in Howth, and when we learned that this wonderful house was for sale in 2003, Peter made a quick trip to Ireland and, after a few quick phone calls with Jane back in Cleveland, immediately bought it. It was perfect!

What makes this property unique

Our Irish home is full of character, over 120 years old but with every modern amenity, in a quiet street, but still within a short walk of all of the attractions of Howth Village and Howth Harbour with their restaurants, pubs, Yacht Club, shops, pier walks and marina.
