Grew up in Jacksonville, NC, went to Sweet Briar College, then George Washington University, while working in association publishing and living in Washington DC. Since 1985 when we moved here full time, I have done publications consulting and marketing, freelance web and print design, and taught as an adjunct at a nearby community college. This is in addition to raising 4 children (now grown) with my husband, Phil, a retired naval officer, and operating Almost Heavenly Trees and Greenery, a Christmas tree business (we retail in Alexandria, VA). It is a cobbled-together existence that has been interesting as well as satisfying. Offspring are sprinkled around the world, from a son just about to finish the London Business School after the Naval Academy and 6 years active duty; another in San Diego working for a small tech company after finishing 6 years of Naval service after graduating from Duquesne University and NROTC. Our daughter who graduated from WVU is wrapping up a Peace Corps tour in Azerbaijan and plans to teach there for another year, and her twin sister, graduate of Shepherd University, is preparing to become a personal trainer specializing in helping cancer survivors regain their fitness.
I helped found the local arts council (and serve as concerts chair/webmaster/treasurer), chamber of commerce, and visitors bureau, and for 17 years worked for the WV state travel guide (so I know a lot about the area and the state).
