About this property

Getaway In Oregon Wine Country

Newly built house is located on a 100 acre property of woods, vineyards and meadows. The property itself has been featured in many magazines and newspapers because the main home (our residence) is an award winning home built in 1948 and designed by Pietro Belluschi, who was a prominent Northwest architect and Dean of the School of Architecture at MIT. The 1/4 mile private road takes you over a stream, past a large pond (which the grey herons call home) and up the hill. At the vineyard, the road splits off, one part leading to the main house, and the other leading to the newly constructed Vineyard House. The 16 acres of vineyards are yours to roam about in, perhaps with a glass of pinot noir in hand. The Vineyard House itself is located beneath several magnificent ancient oaks, which add to the sense of stillness and complete privacy.
The large deck around the front of the house is a perfect setting for drinking your morning coffee, or sipping your evening glass of complimentary Menefee Vineyards designated wine. Once inside the house, you will enjoy a large living /dining room, with floor to ceiling windows that frame the valley views below. The vineyards surround this home.
The kitchen is fully equipped with all the necessities to cook gourmet meals, including a gas stove. The black granite countertops and eating island make it a delightful place to sit while some clever person whips up something delicious to eat.
There are two bedrooms - both have queen size beds. One of these beds is a Murphy bed. Should you need only one bedroom, this second room is perfect to use as a study/office for extended stays. Each bedroom has a bathroom. There is also a small laundry room - especially helpful if you have been hiking through the woods, or have offered your services to help with harvest in any of the vineyards in the area.
The surroundings are completely private. You may, however, have an occasional deer peering in through a window, but they generally prefer to eat the newly planted landscaping. A hammock under the big oak trees is a perfect way to relax after a day of wine tasting. There are many trails to hike on, and several guests have spent good parts of their days riding through the country side on bikes. If you like to fish, you can try your luck in the stream at the bottom of the property, or drive to nearby Haag Lake.
Should one choose to not cook, there are numerous restaurants in the area. A list of the local restaurants, as well as a list of the vineyards and their tasting rooms, will be available.

Gorgeous Spot in Wine Country!

We had a fantastic time at this absolutely beautiful property. It was very clean, comfortable and the views are spectacular. It was the perfect spot to explore a little part of the Willamette Valley and taste some really great Pinot Noir. Cecilia and Robert were so accommodating and kind. We are looking forward to going back to visit again!

Relaxing get away

I spent a week at the vineyard house, half the time I was working remotely while the other half I just enjoyed time off. The pictures on the website do not do justice to the view, it's just beautiful and tranquil. I had a very brief issue with the wifi but it was fixed very quickly. Over all it was a wonderful get away and I wouldn't mind coming back.

A lovely getaway location

This is a very clean and modern home in a beautiful setting. The house has large glass windows which allows one to easily view the pastoral scene from inside the home. The kitchen is outstanding. There are good reading lights. During the day, we spent a great deal of time on the large desk, or walking through the vineyard.

Wonderful view

I really enjoyed that the modern house is highly functional and has an indoor/outdoor living feel to it. The property has a pastoral view and over looks a working vineyard. When we were there, the workers came to prune the vines and they often sang as they worked. We enjoyed the experience, and appreciated their work.

Beautiful vineyard get away!

My partner and I needed to get away for a long weekend (with our fur babies) to enjoy some R&R and wine and couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay! The vineyards are gorgeous and the views unbeaten. This property is located about 20-30 minutes from most of the towns but we loved how secluded it was from traffic, people, everything. Sylla wrote us a beautiful note and left us wine from grapes used in the vineyard which was quite good! The home was the perfect size and had all the amenities one would need. I’d recommend this place to anyone who wants a quiet, relaxing place a little out of town with beautiful views and great hospitality! Can’t wait to come back!

Rural and Quiet

It is a nice 2-bedroom home. The house was well-equiped, particularly the kitchen. It is located about 20 miles, 30 minute drive from Newberg. The TV had many, many streaming channels. It is a very peaceful location, nice view of the vineyard, a great view from the picture window and sitting on the front porch. If you don't mind the drive and want a quiet, peaceful location, this is the place for you. Tom and Mary

A little slice of heaven. Wow!

A little slice of heaven. Wow. We spent 12 nights at the Vineyard home because we were doing a remodel at our home and it turned out to be a really nice vacation for us. The home itself is in the perfect setting overlooking the vineyard and a lovely horizon looking west. The home was sufficiently supplied and very comfortable. We slept really well as it was so quiet, the beds were comfortable, and the A/C worked great. We made really nice meals cooking on the awesome gas stove while looking out the big windows overlooking the vineyard. The deck is awesome! We made frequent trips for meals in Carlton and would highly recommend trying some of the restaurants during your stay. We hope to return someday.

Tranquil Nature Getaway

We had a lovely experience with the property owners after having to reschedule due to the snowstorm that hit in Feb. Sylla was so kind and understanding to the situation! We rebooked for June and couldn’t have asked for a better stay! I only wish we booked it for longer! The groundskeeper drove by as we were outside on the deck; he was also very welcoming and kind. He told us the dogs were okay to play among any of the vineyards (as long as they left the cats alone in the upper field;) ) He also mentioned there was a trail out past the upper barn that led to a stream! We didn’t end up exploring that far, so we MUST come back and find the stream! *(Be careful Google doesn’t take you down random shortcuts through endless dirt roads! We got caught in that situation a few times driving back to the property)

Perfect guest cottage and perfect location

I simply cannot write enough good things about this amazing getaway in the Oregon wine country! The pictures truly do not do it justice. For the accommodations, cottage size, and views, the price is an absolute steal. The first thing you notice is the beautiful vineyard the property is located on. Absolutely divine. When you walk into the guest cottage you immediately realize EVERYTHING is brand new, in pristine condition, and perfect. I couldn't believe how shiny and new the kitchen and appliances were! Perfect because I love cooking. The bedrooms are a very decent size and the bathrooms are HUGE. My favorite part was sipping wine and watching the sun set over the vineyard from the balcony of the property. Not kidding, felt like I was in a movie. Not to mention the hosts are amazing! Quick to reply to anything and very helpful with all information pertaining the property and its' surroundings. If you want an amazing, relaxing, and perfect getaway weekend ( (or week, i wish I could have stayed a month!) in beautiful Oregon wine country for an absolute steal of a price, this is the place for you. Will definitely be coming back for longer next time I visit Oregon.

The Perfect Willamette Valley Cottage

We traveled to Oregon in search of Willamette Valley wines. With this cottage’s vineyard location beneath shady Oak trees, the front porch became our perch for sipping wine and watching sun and moon roses over the valley. This home was perfect for us. It is remote, but we wanted peace and quiet. Stop for food and supplies on your trip out, and enjoy the gorgeous setting once you arrive. We visited wineries in the Yamhill Carlton area as well as Dundee Hills. There was not a bad vintage in any location, but we really enjoyed Saffron Fields, Winderlea, and Lange for intimate, relaxed tastings. The differentiator for our stay was the care and special touches provided by our host Sylla. She is a great communicator, and she went out of her way to ensure our comfort and enjoyment during our visit. Our party of ;4 adults were comfortable, relaxed and well rested while staying in what we came to know as Vineyard Cottage. The kitchen had everything we needed for our food preparation. Long days exploring local wines and evenings on the porch watching meteor showers and the full Harvest Moon rising over the valley were unique, amazing experiences. This is the perfect Willamette Valley cottage!

About the host

Hosted by Cecilia and Robert Katz

Host profile image
Our names are Sylla and Robert Katz. We live on a 100 acre property which includes our home, a working vineyard, woods and pastures, and our most recent addition, the Vineyard House. We are transplanted Californians but have lived in Oregon for many years. While we are both European born, our respective families immigrated to the United States many decades ago and we have lived in the USA for most of our lives. We do not make wine but we sell our grapes to several prominent wineries in this area and have many friends and business associates who are involved in the Oregon wine industry. When we are not involved with our vineyard we enjoy time with our children and grandchildren and travel.

Why they chose this property

We bought this property in 2005 because most of our children had moved to the Portland area and we wanted to be close-by. We also loved the beautiful setting of the Menefee property and it's proximity to Portland and the Oregon coast. Our newly built Vineyard House is on the site of a caretaker home that we had taken down . The new house was completed in June, 2014.

What makes this property unique

Vineyard House was designed by a well respected local architect. We asked him to design a cozy, intimate home that would give anyone living here the feeling that they were, indeed, living in a vineyard. We feel that he succeeded in his effort. We used a local builder whom we've known for many years who brought practical experience and a strong work ethic to achieve a great result. While we've included many photos, they do not really do justice and no photo can convey the feeling that you get when sitting in the living room, or cooking in the kitchen, or laying in bed, and looking out, seeing and feeling the vineyard and the surrounding area. We are off the beaten path so you won't be bothered by the typical urban/suburban noise, lights, or traffic. And yet, you are only a short drive away from the best that Yamhill County has to offer.
