About this property

Cozy Riverside Cabin with Hot Tub, Epic Views, near 12 National Forest Hikes!

A Riverside Retreat is a cozy riverside ski cabin with hot tub and epic views located on the Skykomish River in the scenic town of Index, WA.

We're in the Mt Baker Snoqualmie National Forest only one hour from downtown Seattle, and 29 miles from Stevens Pass. This area has recently been designated as the 'Wild Sky Wilderness Area' and was featured in the hit film "Captain Fantastic" starring Viggo Mortensen.

With only 150 residents, Index is the smallest town in western Washington, and it is blessed with amazing views of jagged snow-capped mountains, huge granite cliffs, a crystal clear mountain river that runs right through town, and is surrounded by an awesome rainforest right out of the movie 'Twilight.'

This freshly refurnished 2-bedroom cabin sleeps up to 5 in absolute comfort with premium beds and luxury linens, hot tub, gas fireplace, AC, TV, DVD, high-speed Internet, fully stocked kitchen, smokeless fire pit, covered porch, BBQ grill, and additional surprises we'll let you discover.

For your safety and comfort, we follow Covid cleaning protocols and don't allow smoking or pets on the property (no exceptions).

Located right along the Skykomish River at the west end of town on a giant 5-lot property, you'll enjoy the 'best view in town' right from your covered front porch or cozy interior. This is not your typical funky dark cabin in the woods, but a bright, tastefully decorated, and sparkling clean retreat - at an incredible value. We've designed it to be warm, inviting, and perfect for a weeklong getaway for a couple, two couples, or a small family.

Though the house is brimming with entertainment options, it's also an amazing place to just relax and do nothing but watch the river go by. With resident bald eagles soaring overhead, the mountain river rushing by, the amazing fresh air purified by the surrounding forest, and the spring-fed water right out of the tap - you won't find a better place to rejuvenate your body and mind.

Index and the surrounding area is also a sporting paradise with excellent access to hiking, biking, kayaking, river rafting, fishing, skiing (cross country and downhill), ATV riding, horseback riding and more.

In the winter months, nearby Stevens Pass is a big draw as one of the top skiing destinations in the Pacific Northwest. In the summer they offer a full mountain biking experience.

In the summer, the wild Skykomish River is the star of the show offering adrenaline filled whitewater challenges, or a lazy float on a hot summer day. The Skykomish is also widely know for its excellent fishing with the top draw being the world renowned Steelhead. Known as the fish of a thousand casts, they can be extremely challenging to hook and even more so to land - but when you do, you'll have accomplished a major fishing milestone of which you can be very proud.

Things to see in town:
-----------------------------

The town of Index is very small and you can walk the entire town (every street!) in under an hour. Along the way, you'll find lots of things to see. In the center of town, as you cross the bridge, you'll find the Index General Store which has been serving Index residents for longer than anyone can remember. Inside the store, you'll find a very old-school post office.

Kitty corner from the store is the Outdoor Adventure Center which is a rafting and kayaking outfitter where you can rent equipment, take lessons, and join a whitewater trip. Their headquarters, the River House, doubles as a coffee lounge offering hand-crafted coffee drinks, fresh baked goods, Internet access, and good information on what's happening in town.

Newly reopened after a decade-long restoration project, the Bush House Inn is now serving guests for lunch and dinner along with breakfast on weekends.

Also in the center of town is Doolittle park, named after one of the pioneers of the area. The park offers a covered picnic area as well as a tennis court, basketball court and public restrooms. On display is a giant saw blade that was used to cut granite at the local quarry. The granite steps of the Washington state capitol building were cut right here in Index.

To learn more about how Index came to be, be sure to visit PIckett's Museum where you can see amazing photographs and artifacts of an era gone by. You'll be shocked to learn that Index once had 2000 residents when it boomed, and you can see photographs of the giant trees that were harvested from the area. Pickett's is open Memorial Day - Labor Day from 1 to 4 on Fridays and Saturdays. They are also available by appointment during the off season by calling 360-793-1534.

In 2012 the historic Bush House was purchased and underwent a decade-long restoration. Now open, they offer coffee and baked goods in the morning as well as full-service lunch and dinner courtesy of the North Fork kitchen. You can book reservations at 1-509-780-6272.

Across from the Bush House is the Index Elementary school where local students of 6 grades share 2 classrooms. With one of the best student-teacher-ratio's in the state, the school is an excellent place for kids. They also have a nice playground that your kids are welcome to use during off hours.

In 2008 the huge ridge across the river from town was saved from logging by a local effort known as 'Friends of Heybrook Ridge.' The organization raised enough money to purchase the land from a private company and have made the ridge an eco-tourist and educational destination. There is parking lot with educational signage that leads to two different trails. This is an excellent addition to the town of Index and allows people of all ages to easily access a 100-year-old 2nd growth rain forest and learn about the flora and fauna. Get the All Trails app and find Heybrook Ridge for details.

When you stay with us, you will have no limit to the number of amazing hikes in the area. For starters, here's a few popular ones:

* Wallace Falls
* Deception Falls
* Bridal Veil Falls & Lake Serene
* The Iron Goat Trail
* Barclay Lake
* Heybrook Ridge
* Heybrook Firetower

Day Trip(s)
-------------------

Depending on the weather, a very popular day trip for visitors is to cross Stevens pass into the eastern side of the state where you'll find yourself in the German styled town of Leavenworth. The streets are lined with tourist-attracting shops and there are several good restaurants to try. One of our favorites is Gustav's at the west end of town offering fantastic bratwurst and cold beer. Try the outdoor deck upstairs when the weather is nice - a great way to spend a couple of hours.

Heading the other direction, Seattle is only an hour away. Check out Pike Place outdoor market where you can grab coffee at the very first Starbucks, watch the fishmongers throw fish, and shop for fresh produce and handmade crafts. It's open every day of the year rain or shine! Or take a ride up the space needle where you can see the whole city, or journey off on a ferry ride to picturesque Bainbridge Island for lunch. There is certainly plenty to do in the Emerald City if you get the itch for city life during your stay. And at only an hour away, getting there and back is half the fun.

Weekend at Index

When we showed up, everything was ready to go. Hot tub heated and ready (a nice touch), a bottle of wine set out for the adults, and games and movies ready to go without trouble. The neighborhood is true mountain town. There’s not a lot going on as for entertainment and dining, but we expected this going in. It’s part of the joys of being in Index. There is occasional train noise, but I found it undisturbing to my sleep with fans going. The place was clean and I felt as listed. We did a number of hikes in the area during couple of days at the house that were fun and okay for some inclement weather. In the guest book, they mention that their water is some of the best drinking water in America, and we’d have to agree—it’s very good water. It’s great for both drinking and showers.We’d definitely come back.

Comfortable home base

This home was a great home base for our hiking adventures in the area. It is close to several trailheads and Wallace Falls State Park. It is is a quiet area and the view was beautiful from the front porch. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking some of our meals instead of eating out all the time. Only used the hot tub once...but was in perfect working order. Would definately consider staying hear again if in the area.

Great spot!

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Index is a quaint community nestled on the river and surrounded by amazing views and scenery. The views from the front porch are fantastic. The house is stocked with everything you need. Plus, the outdoor living areas push it up a level. You have the river just steps away. That offers its own set of activities. The house was clean, beds comfortable and it just felt comfortable. We actually enjoyed having the trains come through. After a few days, you start to pick up on their schedule. Hands down, we’d return. The owners are top notch regarding communication and information.

Fabulous cozy spot with gorgeous views

The house was well equipped with kitchen ware, games and easily navigated instructions on the wifi, tv options, and gas fireplace. There nice linens and fuzzy blankets as well and a thoughtful bottle of wine. The covered hot tub was much appreiated in the winter weather. The location was close to the small town if we had needed anything. Our only missing star in the review was because we didnt expect the street in front of the house, between the house and the river, to have as much walking car car traffic. We expected it to be more secluded. All passing company were friendly and quiet so we weren't actually bothered by it though. Overall a fantastic stay, especially for the price and thoughtfulness put into the house. Thank you for sharing it with us, we will be back again!

Excellent Riverside Retreat

This house has everything that we needed during our stay in Index. The location is easy to access from the bridge, and the view in front of the house is just gorgeous. The kitchen is fully stocked, the bedrooms are good size, and the bedding is soft and comfortable. We loved the flow of the house. One of our favorite things to do while at the house was to drink coffee on the porch and just enjoyed the view of the mountain and river. We would love to return some time in the future. We highly recommend this house!

Incredible place

We loved our 3 days in Index. The house was really nice with great accommodations for us and and our 5 month old son. The hosts were very thoughtful and informative about the house and the area. The Mountain View from the front porch is absolutely amazing. We enjoyed hiking at Serene lake and bridal veil falls 6 minutes from the house. Wish we could’ve stayed longer.

Cute & Comfy

My little family of four stayed here Aug 2016 and we had such a nice time. The home felt so warm and cozy, lots of neat touches. The location is perfect, so peaceful, and we all loved the access to the bikes! It was great to wind-down for the weekend and the hot tub was a special treat. I have to say I cannot stop thinking about the king bed! Hands down the best sleep I've ever had... I want one exactly like it in my house!

Perfect Winter Getaway

This was the sweetest little cottage. We went for a girls get away for a long weekend. We especially enjoyed the beautiful view out the large picture window, the sound of the river and the relaxing hot tub! Highly recommended especially if you live in Seattle since it's so close but feels far into nature.

Scenic Views & Relaxation

My family and I had a wonderful time during our stay (2 adults; 2 children). We were amazed by the views of the mountains and river from the property. Everything was a described and the owners also include thoughtful things that travelers might want or need, like just a good book to read. And there was plenty to do in the area in terms of exploring trails, etc. We hope to return again soon!

Home is out dated . Does not feel secure . No easy river access for people with disabilities.

We arrived 1 hour before check in to make sure we were in the right spot and noticed a car in the drive way which was ok because we were early We drove around and came back at 4 pm to find the car still there and music playing loudly we pulled in and it was the house keeper needless to say she did not leave until almost 5pm . First impression is it does not reflect the photos the home is outdated from the 70's theme photos made it appear the river was accessible easily not the case for someone like me with a disability. It just wasn't for us . We did not stay the evening as we had sick kids to go home to anyhow . Regardless the front door doesn't stay shut without locking the deadbolt and the back door is flimsy at best . Like I said for the cost of this I expected more .

Amazing views from a bright, charming home!

We really enjoyed staying at this Index retreat, in late March. The location/views were fabulous....the nearby snow covered mountains and rock walls are way more impressive than the pictures can show. The home felt nicer inside than the pictures portrayed also, with quality bedding and vintage touches throughout. The kitchen had everything we needed-stove, microwave, tea kettle, coffee pot, etc and we made good use of the crockpot too. We ended up not using the BBQ but it was in good shape. The driving directions and overall instructions were helpful and worked out as planned. The home sits on the street rather than directly on the water but we enjoyed it just as well and appreciated that we could fish a ways down without being on someone else's property. We enjoyed the trains but they come directly through town, whistling throughout the nite. I slept through them but people who are light sleepers will want to keep this in mind if wanting to stay anywhere in Index (not just this place). Also, use the dryer during daytime hours as it has a loud squeeking sound. Overall, we found the home and the town quite charming and loved our stay.

A treat of a retreat :)

This place is wonderful. It connects to almost all (if not all) your needs you may have as a family, group of friends or single traveler. I was impressed how this place caters to many kinds of guests with various traveling agendas. It is secluded just enough to feel at peace (with truly picturesque views) yet close enough to many great hiking points and other adventures. It thoughtfully has local maps, activities suggestions, house-guide, magazines for a lazy morning, board games, grill, very nice private hottub and it made me feel very comfortable, welcomed and at home. The front of the house (including kitchen) is filled with natural light in the morning and puts one in such an optimistic mood for the day! The bedroom is cozy and the bed is extra comfortable, which is a huge plus for any kind of a day :)

It's one of those rare vacation rentals that you might find that is perfect and worthy stating in. The location is quite and everybody is friendly. Charming and cozy riverside retreat in the Cascade Mountains

Index, Washington is a charming town! We immediately fell in love with the small-town vibe, wild Skykomish River, awesome fall colors and inspired mountain views. A Riverside Retreat proved an ideal place to both explore - and relax - amid the area's beauty and charm. Opportunities for outdoor adventures abound and we hiked to nearby Heybrook Lookout. A storm blew in on our second day, cutting our planned rockhounding activities short. Instead, we opted for a drive along the sleepy Index-Galena Road. With wind blowing and heavy rain falling - it proved quite exciting! Leaf after leaf danced from the maple trees, covering the streets in a blanket of autumn color. To our surprise, we easily became used to - and welcomed - the frequently passing trains (we miss them now that we are back home!). Our time spent at the house was enjoyed. The owners of A Riverside Retreat have gone to great length to ensure your stay will be pleasant. We appreciated the book of information, the wealth of amenities (wifi, cable TV, DVDs, games (nice to see Settlers of Catan among the mix) and books/magazines), thoughtful and tasteful decoration and cleanliness of the house. Due to weather we didn't make use of the front porch, but the Adirondack chairs would give good place to relax and take in the sound of the river and mountain views. We did enjoy the hot tub (thank you for the directions on removal of the cover) and slept well in the comfortable bed. The kitchen is well equipped and we lacked nothing for preparing meals at home (note: the wine cork is broken, but still usable). During breaks in the rain, I opted to make use of the bikes - but, the one I chose had embarrassingly squeaky breaks so I cut my ride short. Though there are homes nearby and occasional pedestrian/auto traffic in front of the home - we did not feel a lack of privacy and everyone we encountered was friendly. Thank you for sharing your home with us, we hope we have opportunity to return in the future.

What a wonderful place to visit! Index is a great small town with loads of personality. We were able to explore state parks, Mt Rainier, the cascade loop and some of the islands. The best was swimming in the river...very refreshing and fantastic after a day of hiking! It did take a couple of days getting use to the train whistle as it was warm and we had the windows open at night. Your home was an awesome homebase for all our travels. Thanks for some great memories!

lovely and cozy home away from home

This Index house is one of a kind. It offers more than any hotel can offer. Magical sleeping experience on the cloud-like bed, and beautiful views of the forest with the snow covered mountain peaks. We really enjoyed our stay in this cozy house, and regreted that we could not stay longer. For people like us, who likes outdoor activities , this house is ideal: it is surrounded by sights of waterfalls and hiking trails, it has a jaccuzi and mountain river, on top of everything there are plenty of bicycles to explore sight seeings. It felt like luxury camping in the middle of forest. Thank you dear owners:)))

About the host

Hosted by Ken Mahar

Host profile image
Greetings, We are Ken Molly Max and Juliet.

We love to travel including backpacking around the world in 2007 before kids. Now that our kids are 8 and 10 we're off traveling the world again including Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Italy, Thailand, and Mexico.

We made Index our permanent home again but since we're off on our travels, we've put our home back on the market. We think you'll find everything you need here to be comfortable, including our new air conditioning! If you want to do nothing - you've found the right place. If you want to do everything - you've found the right place. Please review our VRBO listing, or reach out with questions. Regardless of where you stay, we hope you enjoy yourself!

Why they chose this property

Ken grew up in Index (and still has family here), and even though we've traveled around the world there are few places as beautiful. The amazing mountains, sheer cliffs, and powerful river are enough to mesmerize even the most jaded. Combine that with the variety of kiking, biking, kyaking, rafting, fishing, skiing to be had - you couldn't find a better place to relax, or seek adventure. The town of Index has only 150 people so it's pin drop quiet at night. All you will hear is the gentle rushing of the river (and an occasional train, though we don't even hear it anymore). This property is at the far end of town, built on 5 lots so there's a huge lawn to spread out on, and even the houses 'next door' are rarely occupied. You'll have all the peace and quiet you need.

As Ken grew up he always marveled at the view from this home, and when it came up for sale we decided to grab it. Since we can't live here full time, but we still want to use it when we visit several times a year - making it a vacation rental was the perfect choice.

What makes this property unique

The view from our home is AMAZING. Every room in the house has a view of jagged mountains or sheer granite cliffs, and the front porch is especially magical. It's a great place for morning coffee watching the bald eagles, or a great place for cocktails on a summer night. Since we added a hot tub to the back porch, it may be a tie as to which will get more use.

The other big advantage of this property is that is sits on 5 city lots - one of the biggest property in Index (though that's not saying a lot). And since our nearest neighbors only use their home for an occasional weekend in the summer we have a ton of privacy.
