About this property

Fantastic beach front location in spacious property, unique house design

Our guests will enjoy a unique house design, experiencing a close connection with the beach nature and arts.
The living room and the kitchen have sliding doors to open the space completely to the ocean and the breeze. The outside decks are literally 10 steps from the water and the sunset. In the house there are other open spaces, corresponding to the idea of living as close to nature and sustainably as possible. In each of these spaces you will find living art and wooden sculptures. Every year new sculptures are created by the artist, who stays here during European winter (turelipan).
Design, functionality and location of Casa Argenta built in 2012 are great. The house is designed to be permeable to wind, which allows the tropical temperatures to be well tolerated, supported by the fans present in each room. There is no air conditioning, but AC is not really necessary in our home.
This 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house for 6 people has a raw elegance which will fascinate nature lovers. 2 of these bedrooms have big windows with great seaview. The main bedroom has a private bathroom, and then there is another bathroom for the other 2 bedrooms. We offer towels, bed linens, shampoos and hand soap.
There is a full kitchen with all the amenities needed, open to the front deck and the beach. You will enjoy a spectacular view with your morning coffee and your sunset drink. These decks are equipped with hammocks and beach chairs. For a 180 degrees seaview or a star filled sky by night you can climb to the roof.
Since our house is right on the beach, the conditions of the building are sometimes challenging. We are constantly working on maintenance, but corrosion is fast and not everything in our house is always perfect. Thank you for your understanding!
The house is located in the Sandy Bay village, a quiet local neighborhood, just 2 miles away from West End. Situated right on one of the most beautiful sandy beaches inside the Roatan Marine Park!
This area offers great snorkeling right out of the house. We offer full snorkeling equipment, water shoes and a marking buoy to overcome the shallow entry to the water. In 10 minutes of swimming you will reach the best snorkeling and diving places. A kayak and a stand up paddle board are ready for you to discover the marine life of the lagune. There are different dive shops in the close neighborhood who will take you to discover the outside reef.
In walking distance and along the beach there are several options of resorts with restaurants and live music. If you want to reach some of the best places to eat and for groceries, walk for three minutes to the main road and grab a collective taxi or bus to West End.
The house has a modern alarm system with a direct 7/24 connection to Bulldog Security International patrols. There is a safe place to store your valuables.

No AC and no privacy were an issue

The property manager is world class and the outdoor living space was breathtaking. The issue is that local men were constantly hanging around, filming/photographing my teenage daughters and we had several hundred dollars and my iPhone stolen. After dark we would have men on the deck watching us inside as well. With no AC, leaves no any door or window open was not an issue so it was stiffling hot/humid which made it unbearable. After two nights we had to move to another rental and eat the cost of 4 nights we were supposed to stay. Love the place, love the host, but would not stay there again.

Beautiful and Rustic Roatan

Stunning view and great location in Sandy Bay. Definitely hot with no AC but host was very up front about that and we made good use of the fans provided. House had all the essentials needed for a family vacation and it was wonderful to have the kayak and paddle board. Pino was lovely and responsive when we had questions.

Great Stay

The house is just want I wanted! Tucked away on the beach away from the crowds. Great beach to take early morning walks and amazing sunset. If you are a fly fisherman take your rod and reel and make a cast or two at the tailing Permit and Bonefish. Pino and his daughter Anna were at the house to greet us and get us settled in and responded to our WhatsApp messages when we had a question. Thanks for the amazing stay.

Rustic beach house that we enjoyed for a week. Beach is amazing here, but make sure and use 100% deet as mosquitos and sand fleas are hearty early morning and late evenings. The sand/beach is amazing here and the snorkeling is super easy for beginners. A little more noise at night with locals and resident beach dogs. Enjoyed our stay. Thanks so much to Hans and manager Tanja.

Relaxing on the beach vacation

The house was perfect for our trip to Roatan, we spent 10 days relaxing on the beach and had everything we needed. Plenty of room, towels and linens, snorkel gear. The house manager was responsive and helped us get oriented to the neighborhood. There were restaurants and things to do close by and easy access to the main road. Be aware that the pictures of the house were probably taken when the house was new and 7 years of being by the ocean has taken some of the shine off. It was a rustic, interesting beach house for us that we enjoyed staying in. Also, it would be nice if there was a couch or something on the breezeway or the front deck as there isn't much of a gathering place other than the dining table inside. All in all, great location, price and opportunity.

Rustic

This home is quite rustic. The view and snorkeling is wonderful. A little noisy at night with dogs barking, music and people very nearby Needs some maintenance in kitchen, glass panes repaired and some electrical work (lights & outlets). I think the orientation binder was helpful, and it would be nice to either list or have property manager show a little more. Ie. how oven works, how outlets work (or don’t), what switches are for. . The main lock should lock and unlock from the inside without a key. It’s cumbersome the way it is. I know we were told the area is safe, but using nuts and bolts to lick the sliding patio door plus being shown how to jam a screwdriver into the floor board to keep the door secure made us feel uneasy. Pino was so nice, helpful and responsive. Kimberley was so knowledgeable about the island. We enjoyed and appreciated both of them!

Amazing snorkeling on coral reef right outside your door

Location for snorkeling could not have been better. The coral reef is right outside of your property. You can see all sorts of sea creatures without booking tours, or paying for a boat. Waking up every day on the beach was incredible. Very quiet, neighborhood, bars and restaurants few hundred feet away. I could complain about need for remodel or that some stairs/railings are falling apart and create serious hazard but for the PRICE you can’t find better place. You can’t swim on the beach outside the house because it is very shallow and it’s full of sea grass. But that’s why there is a ton of tiny fish, crabs, shells etc… Minimalist design of the house is beautiful but not safe for little kids. My youngest one fell of the stairs and broke her arm but we knew there was no railing and it is on us. We Had to cut vocation short a week early Host is very communicative and accommodating. I would definitely stay again.

Wonderful area to stay.

Best way to describe is a up north cabin on the beach in the Caribbean. Island life is amazing for sure. The house was really neat. Best way to describe the kitchen would be a bachelor kitchen- plastic lids and no containers they went to. Plenty of pots and pans and dishes though. Suggest a larger sealed container to keep food in it. I tried storing as much in the fridge- we adapted. Such an entertaining house and the view morning, noon and night was never disappointing. Suggest wearing water socks to get out and snorkel from this place for sure! Pino the house manager is pleasant and accommodating. Things that were frustrating could have a few things done here and there for future guests not have to deal with what we did. Dogs run free on the island they knocked our can over three times in 2 weeks -putting the can up in a wood barricade would be nice so that we didn't have to clean the trash up off the ground. Also a local futbol game made the area very busy, I came back to being blocked out of the space provided to park taken by local kids car. Maybe a chain to keep people's cars out of the drive would of helped. I would give my trip and the house 9 of 10 stars.

Location, Location, Location

My family of four stayed here during the first week of January. The house is charmingly rustic, but very comfortable and had all the amenities needed. It is built ON THE BEACH with the ocean only about 50 feet from the front porch. The beach was well maintained and nearly private to just us (a few guests from other nearby properties would occasionally walk by). The coral reef is very close (150 feet or so) off the front porch and makes for great snorkeling. The home is located in Sandy Bay, which is a beautiful and safe area of Roatan. We never felt unsafe, even though the property has a home alarm system which we could activate. There is no air conditioning for the home; but, we never needed it since the home opens nicely to let the ocean breeze in. Fans are provided in all the rooms and provided plenty of comfort when needed. There are two restaurants within 1/4 mile of walking distance by beach from the home. The full kitchen was convenient for meals we decided to cook at home...pots, pans, dishes, utensils, etc. We rented a vehicle to explore the island (I recommend). The home's location made for a great launch to popular areas such as West End, West Bay, and is only about a 20 minute drive to the airport (Little French Key is about 40 minutes). Our local host for the home, Pino, was always available and very helpful with questions about activities on the island. Pino was great! Overall, this rental was a great value and made for a great trip to Roatan! Than you, Hans, for allowing us to stay at your beautiful beach home!

Perfect location!

This house is in a perfect location. It was really close to the west end and west bay areas, but really beautiful and serene if you just want to stay at the house! Right on the beach and pretty quiet. The reef is right off the shore a short distance and is truly beautiful, with really amazing, huge starfish...there is a good bit of boat traffic as the channel is just to the left, but just be smart! The house is very modern looking from the outside. We experienced high winds most of the time we were there, allowing plenty of breeze in the house and you can adjust windows and doors for the perfect temp. Probably the best thing was the house manager...Tanja- AMAZING! She was so attentive and helpful ANYTIME!! The house comes with a local phone (which was huge, too) and she is always available to help and give you good advice- so great to have a local's help! She even called to check on us when she knew we were headed into a shady part of the island...just to make sure we got back ok! Now, the reasons we rate this house only three stars...although the house is only 4 years old, EVERYTHING is wooden, in a very salty and humid environment, so the sinks and kitchen counter and some other things really show rotting and cracking...seemed a little unsanitary in supposedly "clean areas." The big windows would be awesome, except there are people and kids walking the beach or playing really close to the house, making for not much privacy. We did make suggestions for the owner to add a microwave, iron and ironing board, maybe fix very large leaks when it rains, also there were very few towels for bath and kitchen- without a washer or dryer...we used the same ones all week :( most of these are easy fixes and I do hope they can be resolved...it was just the little things that really made for some big inconveniences. Overall, if they added some little things, we would stay here again.

January 2016 - FANTASTIC!!

Hi All, If you need a place to get away and relax, this is a place to do it. Very relaxing, beautiful sunsets, clear waters. Although the house dos not have air conditioning, there are ceiling fans and portable fans to keep you cool and was comfortable to sleep. There was three hammocks on the deck which I enjoyed a few great siestas in them and enjoyed the warm ocean breeze. Bugs, were almost none (maybe this time of year?) but was great. Was some local dogs that would come and visit us daily, which was great as we missed our dog at home...The dog Bubba was our favs, as we would always let us know if someone was around..he was very friendly The big patio door opens up to bring the outside in so you can enjoy the ocean breeze through the house. There were only 2 of us, but the home can quite comfortably sleep 6 Hans was very easy to work with and worked with us to get our payments through and answered all the questions we had in a timely manor. Tanja, the house manager was also a pleasure to deal with and always answered the phone if we needed any assistance. Tanja greeted us at the house upon our arrival and with a flower and gave us a tour of the house and showed us all the in and outs. There was two 5 gallon jugs of water supplied for us which was super. We did most of our shopping right in Coxen hole at either Eldon or some of the local markets. The fridge is full size to store all the groceries you'd need. Propane gas stove worked great. A thank you out to Claudia as well who lived just down the road where we purchased fresh fish caught that morning from her, Tuna and Mahi Mahi which was delicious We did rent a car while there for a few days as this gave us the opportunity to tour the island on our own which we did from west bay all the way up to Oak Ridge, which was one of our highlights...the people are very friendly and many speak English which was a plus. The security system was fully functional and we felt safe..you can set the alarm while you are sleeping as well and can be controlled with a FOB Roatan is a beautiful island and i'd definitely head back given the chance. Thank you Hans and Tanja for our enjoyable stay...It was hard to leave! If there was couple things that could be improved on is that if the house had a couple of Kayaks to use during your stay and maybe a BBQ to grill on outside...other than that is was a great place to stay. Thanks Craig & Nicole

Such an experience

This home was perfect for our group of 5 adults. The neighborhood was mostly quiet during the day with very little noise, and only the sound of waves made each night a peaceful one. Casa Argenta itself was just perfect! It was so unique, and had quirks that make this house even more special. Each bedroom was plenty big, and on opposite corners of the house from each other. The front bedroom with the ocean view was my room, it is one of the more unique aspects of the house, because it has 2 doors-one to the front porch, and one to the side porch. The side porch is only accessible from inside the house, but the front porch is right outside the other bedroom door. I think this is important to know because I felt a little nervous at first, BUT after orienting myself with the locks, I felt VERY safe! Not only was there a deadbolt but also a steel rod that secures this solid wooden fortress door to the floor, I slept easy and felt secure. There is sea grass between your own beach and the reef, but the 5 of us walked through it everyday with our flippers. Other reviews stated that it was unusable because of sea urchins, I did not see-or feel- any sea urchins in the grass. The snorkeling directly in front of the house was phenomenal, the reef was vibrant and so so so full of life! It was a nice feeling to stop whatever you were doing, just stand up and say, ok im going to go snorkel now, and walk from your front steps and into the ocean. The kitchen was well equipped, and came with jugs of water. We stopped at Eldons the grocery store with Jose(setup by Tanja) directly from the airport and stocked up, we made another trip a few days later. Plenty of toiletries/towels/linens. The best food we had on the island was at Beach Grill-at Blue Bahia(<5minute walk). Other restaurants were in walking distance ranging in price/atmosphere, Beach Grill gets my vote though. We walked to west end, but taking the bus that you catch at the main road was super cheap, and way faster than walking. The bus more resembles a taxi van-but is way cheaper We were so thankful to have Tanja (house manager)as a resource during our week stay. Tanja's welcome made us feel very at home in Sandy Bay. We really felt like we were her number one priority, and she just wanted us to enjoy our time on the island. She was successful! Call David with Roatan Culture Charters for anything to do with a boat Thank you Hans for sharing your home with us, we are very lucky! Hope to visit again

We loved being wide open to nature and right on the shore

We so enjoyed staying 3 weeks at this one of a kind, specially designed rustic house in the best location. Pino, the p. Manager was great and the ease and accessibilty to everything we like about Roatan was also great. It's nature at the beach in central america. There will be no see ems, dogs will bark and if you're lucky you'll have those lovely rain showers just enough. This property is 10 years old and its owner lives a world away, things could be newer or cleaner but... Everything that mattered worked just fine. The kitchen is well supplied and there's plenty of ways to have fun and make yourself comfortable in this special property.

Unique stay

The home is in a lovely residential area. It’s very quiet and in walking distance of a few great restaurants. The home has an indoor/outdoor feel which made us feel very close to nature. On the downside, there are a lot of biting insects inside the home. My husband and I are suffering from severe painful and itchy bites covering our arms and legs. I cannot say if they are sand flea or bed bug bites. I’d recommend that the host treats the home and beds for this issue. It would also be great to have a couch for gathering. On a positive note, Eddy is an amazing tour guide. He really went above and beyond to make our visit fun and exciting. He’s so knowledgeable about the island, the people and activities. Pino is the perfect host. He explained the home and its quirks very thoroughly so we didn’t have any issues locking up. Check in was easy and seamless. The ocean directly in front of the home is teeming with life and provides a beautiful sunset view.

Private Getaway

We had the time of our lives on this trip! The house is unique with stunning architecture. Expect a private beach to yourselves and private waters. You can snorkel right from the house to the reef. Snorkel gear is at the house. You can walk the beach to two close by restaurants with amazing food and friendly servers. You can also walk the beach down to watch the dolphins at Anthony's Keys or you can sign up to go to Anthony's Keys to swim with the dolphins. If you want to go to different areas of the island we just walked out to the road and a taxi grabbed us right away. The sloths nearby is an amazing experience at Bodden and available to text on Whatsapp for a pickup. Sandy Bay is the perfect location. You have your own private area, can walk to everything, yet can easily pick up a taxi if you want to go farther away. Hans sets you up with people during your stay to get to the house. Pino was wonderful for check in and out and questions during the trip. Eddy, our driver, was amazing and brought us to the grocery store on the way to the house from the airport and helped us throughout the trip when we texted him. Hans responded immediately with questions that we had through the VRBO messenger when we had them before the trip. There are 3 unique and stunning bedrooms. One that you can view the stars from the bed with access to the porch and a private bathroom. Another that has a tree in it with access to another porch and a private bath. Lastly, one that you get a full view of the ocean! There are lots of decks, hammocks, an outdoor shower, and a beautiful rooftop deck. The property is large and has a volleyball court on it and a swing under an almond tree. We highly recommend this property!

Lovely beach front house!

This is a quirky home with a gorgeous, wide open view of the beach! Three large glass doors slide all the way open for an open air space for the large kitchen and dining table. The locking system was ingenious. I loved the bedroom that looked out on to the beach, however it is completely separate from the house, so not near a bathroom. However the other two rooms each have their own bathroom. There is also a large, open space on the side of the house that has a clothesline to hang towels, etc., but would also is a delightful place to practice yoga. The two hammocks were comfortable and perfect for relaxing in. We loved all of the friendly beach dogs that roamed the area! The Blue Bahia is a nice restaurant and dive shop just down the beach, and Anthony's Key (dolphin activities!) is within walking distance. Pino was a very nice house manager. Haans was very easy to work with, and especially accommodating when we had an issue with our booking. We had a wonderful time at Casa Argenta!

About the host

Hosted by Hans-Jurg Pfaff

Host profile image
I am a cultural anthropologist and independent documentary filmmaker with a film production in Switzerland – now retired.
After hurricane Mitch 1999, I lived as a project manager of Caritas Switzerland in Olancho province in central Honduras. I visited the Bay Islands various times and fell in love with Roatan, where I bought one of the last pieces of beach property in Sandy Bay. More than ten years later, my Swiss friend and architect Stephan and I built this house together with a local crew.
Our local property manager Pino, an Italian who lives on Roatan since twenty years, is a tourist expert and will be ready to explain anything you want to know about the island. He also will organize your airport pick-up, and he will do everything to make your stay comfortable.

Why they chose this property

I love snorkeling and diving, and Roatan is famous for it's protected reef (natural reserve called Marine Park) and for being one of the best SCUBA dive sites in the world. Sandy Bay is a nice and quiet village with various resorts and not far from the main tourist hub in West End.

What makes this property unique

In front of this home, there is a nice beach-garden with three big almond trees and plenty of coconut palms. You will love the clean and quiet beach, unspoilt sun sets and the incredible sea view in front of your home! Beach Volleyball field and private parking in the garden.
