About this property

Beautiful Cabin in the Heart of Blue Ridge Parkway

Experience the authenticity of Mammaw and Pappaw Darnell’s home place ½ miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway and across the street from the Raccoon Holler Campground lake. The beautiful lake is right in front of the home place. Used to about 5 years ago, there was no water or bathroom in this cabin. After Mammaw passed away, it was our dream to restore the home and leave the rooms as Mammaw had them in order to share the love of the cabin with others. Now complete with granite counter tops, hardwood floors, and whirlpool tub with it has all the modern day luxuries. You will really enjoy your time here – two bedrooms (i.e., three full beds as two are upstairs in one room), full bathtub, separate shower, washer dryer, dishwasher microwave, hardwood floors, natural beams etched with pine hardwood to provide the rustic cabin feel yet with the modern day appliances of comfort including flat screen cable television.

Sit on the front porch and look at the lake, view the lake from the kitchen, living room and upstairs bedroom. This home place offers authenticity and comfort. Convenient to Jefferson and West Jefferson, 22 miles out the Blue Ridge Parkway to Boone and a mile from the famous Northwest Trading Post, right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, 15 miles from Wilkesboro, come home to Raccoon Holler.

Cute, clean cabin in the woods with plenty of room. Was dark when we arrived and was a little confusing on check in as there were no numbers on the cabin and mailbox in front had a different number. Great stay.

Great location! Walk to the Blue Ridge Parkway..

The cabin is roomy, with large outdoor space and great view of the water avcross the quiet street. It was warm, well stocked, and includes a smart tv. Denver the host is kind and responds quickly to any need or question. We will return when we hit Ashe County again!

A nice cabin but devoid of amenities

We had to leave earlier than expected because there was no heat for a couple of days and we awoke this morning and there was no water.

Perfect Relaxing Retreat

This place was amazing. Our very enjoyable stay started as soon as we entered and saw how clean, cozy, and well appointed the cute little home is. Nothing, absolutely nothing, was lacking, from the amenities and furnishings to the location! It was close to town and very close to tons of existing things to do in the area. We had a rough start the first day as a storm had come through but setting on the front porch listing to the rain was very relaxing! Denver was a great host and a pleasure to work with. We are so fortunate to have found this lovely home. I am already feeling the urge to go back to go back to Mammaw and Pappaw Darnell’s home place!

Quaint and convenient

Location convenient to town, nestled into a private setting off the beaten path. Clean, comfortable amenities. Calgon box on tub made us all smile. Would have enjoyed a longer stay. Suggest privacy screen between upstairs bedroom spaces, some finger pulls for pocket doors in bath as it was difficult to get a good grip to close. Would recommend as a relaxing get away.

We loved this house. Was a perfect setting for our Christmas this year. The kitchen is very well stocked with everything you need to cook up a meal. Everything was thoughtfully laid out and super clean. The Jacuzzi tub was a real treat. Owner was very responsive to our questions.. We will be staying here again in sure.

Fifth visit to the Holler

This is our fifth time staying at this lovely cabin. We’ve started thinking of it as our home away from home. Denver is an excellent host and very communicative when we had any questions or concerns. Looking forward to visit number six!

Cozy Cottage

Cute and cozy cottage perfect for our family (adults, children, and pets) near Downtown West Jefferson. Everything was clean and the kitchen had everything we needed with plenty of space for family gatherings. Lots of sleeping room with 1 bedroom downstairs and 4 beds upstairs. The only thing that I'd change is that the bedroom downstairs had a small closet but there was no closet upstairs and the drawers of the dresser were full. We ended up stacking our clothes on the sill that ran along the wall. Guests are not allowed access to the lake and playground across the street as those are part of the private campground but the porch was the perfect spot to unwind with a nice cup of coffee. Overall, we had a great experience! Thank you Denver and Wanda.

Overall a nice place to stay at a fair price!

Tv’s need to be updated! Had to turn them off manually as remotes weren’t programmed to operate tv and satellite box from one remote! I could have done it, but needed a password to enter settings! Actually this is a big deal to us!

Cute cottage in the mountains

The cabin was spotless and cozy. There are actually 3 beds in the upstairs loft area, two full and one twin, as well as a double bed in the downstairs bedroom. All six of us were very comfortable. Plus we hiked at nearby Mt Jefferson State Park, which is lovely, and ate some delicious breakfasts at the CopperMine grill. We highly recommend this delightful cabin and the surrounding area!

Great relaxing get away

Loved this cottage and look forward to going back. We stayed in July and the temperature was so much cooler than at home. We spent most of our time in the rocking chairs on the front porch enjoying the view of the pond. We took s'mores supplies with it since we saw there was a fire pit. You can get bundles of firewood across the street at the campground. Our first night after a long drive we ordered dinner from the Mountain Sure Restaurant owned by the owners sister. The steak dinner was more than enough for my husband and I. The owner responded to our questions right away and Wanda came to the cottage quickly to respond to our request. There are lots of sight seeing brochures on the hutch by the table which was very helpful. The Parkway is just a few minutes up the road so you are close enough to the Parkway but still in a cozy quiet spot. Our friends came the second night and stayed upstairs. They said the bed was comfortable although she said it would be better with curtains to block out the car lights. Our room was comfortable as well. Our second night we grilled out on the grill by the little creek where we saw hummingbirds. The hummingbird would come buzz us on the porch too. We enjoyed our walk around the pond after dinner. There are so many lightning bugs I don't think I have ever seen so many and a bunny always stopped by each morning and evening. We loved that we were able to take our dog and he enjoyed lounging on the porch. We would definitely recommend this cottage and look forward to going back.

Lack of communication

There was no stay to rate. Upon arriving at the property, someone else was already there. My husband and I had driven a few hours, with our dogs, to stay for the weekend to be with our daughter for her birthday. The property had been double-booked. I reserved through VRBO and the other was reserved through HomeAway. We had to scramble to find a place to stay that would allow dogs. Not to mention this was move-in weekend for the nearby college. The owner did refund most of the money and tried to make things right. I do not blame him for the double-booking. I strongly think all of these rental companies need to get together and purchase a software program that tracks reservations to prevent this type of thing from happening to other people. We did get extremely lucky and found a hotel room that was pet-friendly. I am somewhat wary of using this service again.

Really enjoyed our stay...loved the cozy home feel and how clean the house was. We also enjoyed view snd being able to walk lake plus backyard area are all a plus as well as being able to bring our dog! Which is huge! We would have enjoyed using fireplace as seasonal weather brought in very cool temps . Please repair for future visits ASAP. We plan on keeping this place in our “favorites”

I experienced complete love and acceptance when I visited my Mammaws and papaw here as a young boy. The two of them were amazing. Up the line was a spring where papaw went to get water. Down the line, lol, was an outhouse. When I stayed they wanted me to eat and rest and sleep and to this day in the courses I teach at UCF in Orlando to bachelors, masters, and doctoral students, I share about the RACCOON Holler Ritz Carlton experience I felt when spending time there. I wanted their legacy to live on so restore the cabin after they passed in hopes that those that came experienced a similar peace, love, and tranquility that I did when I was there. I hope you do. Currently, I am writing a childhood memoir entitled, Growing Up On Raccoon Holler. When finished, I will place a copy in the cabin. Thank all of you for reading and have a wonderful stay.
