About this property

Gold Fox Lodge - Romantic Riverfront Log Cabin - A Piece of Michigan History!

Experience a romantic fairy tale log cabin on the river - WITH A WATERFALL VIEW!!.

Gold Fox Lodge is an enchanting, historic, luxury, 4-season, riverside log cabin with an amazing riverfront setting. The decor, furnishings and atmosphere are simply magical. Recline with your favorite cup of coffee or glass of wine beneath towering century-old cedar and pine trees while taking in the awe of the river, wildlife and romantic cascading waterfall.

Let us spoil you in this 3 bedroom, 1 bath log cabin that offers amazing upscale comforts in a rare and historic north woods romantic atmosphere. Enjoy the cozy great room layout with its leather recliners and massive stone fireplace and amber-aged logs. The kitchen and bathroom have been tastefully updated, maintaining the historic charm of the log cabin while integrating luxury touches. The sunroom overlooking the river even has heated tile floors to keep your feet cozy all year.

No matter the season, the atmosphere is perfect for a romantic getaway, anniversary, birthday, honeymoon, or intimate family vacation.

The cabin sits in a secluded river location on Big Creek river with 10 private acres and is for your exclusive use.

One very special treat is an old fashioned 18 hole miniature golf course that was built decades ago by a former owner. The stone-lined course winds through the forest and is sure to make a lasting impression on children and adults alike.

You will simply want for nothing as everything you could possibly need is provided for your comfort including all of your kitchen and cooking needs, luxury bedding, linens, and towels.

In the warmer months common outdoor activities in the region include fishing, hiking, bird watching, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, tubing, golfing, ATV trail riding, and horseback riding.

In the winter months things don't slow down as the temperatures, snowfall, and terrain make an ideal winter wonderland. The area has many maintained trails for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling in addition to tubing and downhill skiing within a short drive. If you just want to stay warm, the indoor cozy fireplace setting and sunroom view of the river and wildlife year round will not disappoint.

The area is rich with outfitters supporting your canoe, kayak, tube, ATV, snowmobile, horseback, skiing, and fishing interests.

We have a caretaker and cleaning staff that live within minutes of the cabin - and can help with virtually any problem. Just prior to your arrival we will send you the electronic door lock code so that you can walk right in when you arrive.

Besides having plentiful trout and wildlife to entertain you right outside your back door - you're also only minutes from the famous AuSable River - home of the "Holy Waters".

Fly fishing enthusiasts have long considered the Au Sable region as a must visit destination. As chronicled in "Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die" you'll quickly appreciate the romance of this region. Experience the nearby Holy Waters, Masons Tract of the South Branch, North Branch of the AuSable, and Mio Trophy Water. In fact, it was the beauty of this region and quality of trout fishing that led to the formation of our nation's first Trout Unlimited chapter in 1959 by Au Sable river anglers. Big Creek river - flows into the AuSable just three miles downstream. Big Creek, being a tributary to the AuSable, is even considered by many to rival, the fishing on the AuSable.

We also love to help our guests plan their visit to the area and provide an area activities guide that contains key information on things to do in the area including all outdoor resources you may need and recommended restaurants and other resources in the region.

Getting to the cabin is easy in all seasons for all vehicles. The Michigan roads in this region are well maintained year round. The access road to the cabin is also maintained year round catering to 2WD vehicles. We also have a Generac standby, whole house, generator - so you never need to worry about losing power in a storm.

If our calendar is full - please check out our sister lodge, "Copper Fox Lodge", just 3 miles away on the AuSable River, VRBO 3524057

Quiet retreat

We were back in Mio for a celebration of our family’s 100 year family reunion and it was an excellent place for my mom, my sister, and me to escape back to after spending much of our days reconnecting with family members in the area.

Fabulous Cabin and property

We stayed for a week, and loved everything about the cabin and the property. They thought of every detail to make the entire space feel like home. Cozy, comfy, clean. The outside space is exquisite - again all detail to hang outside, firepit, chairs by the river, putting greens, horseshoes. We will go back!!!

Absolutely gorgeous!

The pictures don't do this place justice. It's an experience like no other. The waterfall, the creek, nature trail and a beautiful cozy cabin...there's no reason to leave. The owners have gone out of their way to make your experience at their little slice of heaven unforgettable. I can't wait to return.

Enchanting Lodge

The property was absolutely beautiful, from the wonderful stream to the beautiful Log home. The home was so well put together with extremely comfortable beds to all the decorative details. The porch facing the stream is a great place for morning coffee, and reading at night. You are able to view all the small animals and birds that visit while relaxing. We had great bonfires, and fun trying to catch trout. We enjoyed walks in the woods, and played horse shoes. The hosts are delightful! I had a couple of questions, and they were happy to answer. Their house manager Shar does a wonderful job prepping and ensuring the home is ready for their guests. We would 100% recommend enjoying this wonderful property 😊 Thank you for a wonderful 37th anniversary.

Awesome hidden gem

This place is a clean 90 year old log cabin that has been restored. Super clean, comfortable, quiet, tastefully decorated with modern appliances. Located on the river, in the woods. Just bring your food, everything is is there, and it is advertised correctly and accurately. Would definitely stay again.

A True Michigan Gem

My wife and I rolled the dice on Gold Fox Lodge for our Labor Day Weekend escape from the city, and we could not have been happier with the outcome. This camp is truly fantastic in every respect Communication from our host Jeff was solid right out of the gate - all of our questions/uncertainties were proactively answered in Jeff's very detailed emails. It was a relief to take all the guesswork out of a VRBO trip for once. The cabin and surrounding property are as 'Pure Michigan' as it gets. I have stayed at camps all over the state and this is among the most unique and beautiful. The fact that this camp is being shared with the public at all is kind of miraculous - most people who are lucky enough to have property like this keep them private, and you can understand why. This is a natural retreat that deserves to be treasured and respected by people who appreciate the setting and want these resources to be protected - hopefully for generations. As far as amenities, the cabin has just about everything - and it looked gorgeous and welcoming on our arrival. If you are missing something, there is a 'general store' two minutes down the road that has just about everything you could think of. And 'Ma Deeters' restaurant is a great spot for a casual dinner, drinks, or some takeout pizza. We did the Parmalee-to-Whirlpool tube float down the AuSable courtesy of Rainbow Resort livery, and then came back to camp to grill our steaks and shrimps. Perfect cap to a perfect weekend.

The perfect cabin get away

The Golden Fox Lodge was amazing. From the time we drove up to the cabin and until the time we left, the cabin was a dream come true. It was super clean, the cabin was decorated like a picture in a magazine. It was quiet and relaxing. The water stream was so calmly just sitting outside by the creek. I wish I could pick it up and move it to where I would love to go back there some day. The hosts, Jeff and Beth were just a text away if we needed anything.

He even hiked the 500 mile Camino de Santiago across Spain in 2014, 110 mile Tour du Mont Blanc in the Alps in 2017, and both hiked the 120 mile Highland Way across Scotland in 2019. Beth loves decorating, being a wonderful hostess, and staying connected with family and friends.
