About this property

Stylish townhouse with superb views, elegant courtyard, pool and large terraces

The house is perfectly situated in a quiet cul-de-sac in this lively Spanish town. Perched on a hill overlooking the Guadalhorce valley in the Andalucian mountains, Cuarenta is a superb base for exploring this intriguing area of Spain, for enjoying the Spanish style of life in the town (7 minutes walk to the centre) or just chilling out, lounging on the terraces looking at the wonderful views to the mountains of the National Parks of El Chorro (where you will find the world famous Caminito del Rey) and El Torcal. The fascinating cities of Cordoba, Sevilla and Granada are all close enough for day trips, as is the enchanting town of Ronda. Malaga, an equally exciting city, and the Costa del Sol are only half an hour away by train or car - the beaches, water parks, fun parks, etc. of the Costa being particularly handy for entertaining children.

The house has been completely refurbished over the last few years to give a light and spacious feel with a large (27 ft x 14 ft) open plan living area, 3 generous bedrooms, new bathroom and separate shower room and revamped kitchen. We have redecorated and retiled throughout and all furnishing and equipment is to a high standard. But in this part of Spain for much of the year life is best conducted outdoors. There is a delightful, plant filled courtyard, three terraces with a pool and BBQ and stunning views. So, explore historic Old Spain, walk in wonderful hills or enjoy restaurants, shops and life in a lively and very Spanish town - delightful, and plenty for the kids to do as well.

Peaceful break in the mountains

A beautiful house, high up looking over the Town and the far off mountains. Highlight was the people of Alora coming out for the parade of Our Lady of Flowers on Saturday night... and Caminito del Reyes, and just lazing in Autumn sun.

What a gem!

Wonderful cycling holiday and the property exceeded expectations! The outside space is sensational - we enjoyed every evening on the roof terrace with a beer. We lucked out with the weather - we don't usually! We go on a cycling holiday every spring and aim to explore somewhere new ... so many great rides right from the doorstep and other road users were extremely courteous to cyclists. Overall we clocked about as much elevation as we would in the alps or pyranees - surprising! The area is much more lush than I was expecting and we were frequently bombarded with the sweet smell of citrus blossom - gorgeous. Alora is a fabulous little white town - very Spanish (obvs!) perched on a hill - a great place to explore and get lost in! Great communication with the owners too. What more can I say?!! A wonderful holiday thank you.

Perfect for Climbers

We are keen rock climbers and Kevin's place was a perfect base for our day trips. We stayed in January. The heaters & fireplace made our stay nice and cosy. Situated in a quite cul-de-sac best to back the car in for an easy getaway!

Beautiful spot and lovely terraces

We had a really nice break in Álora, by chance arriving just in time for the Feria. The terraces and pool in the garden are lovely and we spent time looking at the hills and stars, as well as visiting Malaga, which is also great and was a little cooler (though still very hot!).

Spacious property in a beautiful small town

A traditional Spanish, rustic property with fantastic outdoor space. A little tired in places but with character and charm. The town and shops are approx 10 minutes walk away, with a range of bars and eateries. This is a typical Spanish town and they don’t really cater for tourists like they do on the coast. The village and scenery is just stunning. We hired a car and could get to the coast in about 40 minutes. Try Maria’s Bar for food and drinks, it’s English owned and the only English bar we came across. A big issue for us was the lack of aircon, we had no idea how hot it would be inland, plus we were there during a heatwave and it never went under 30 degrees, even at night. There are plenty of fans but it’s not the same. The plunge pool was bigger than expected and much needed in the heat. As the last review mentions, the blue paint on the insides of the pool is peeling off quite badly, so the water is full of flakes of paint. It didn’t stop us using it though. All in all, we had a lovely break and would return. Great communication from the owner and the food welcome pack was much appreciated after arriving late at night. Thank you for having us.

Pleasant townhouse but pool unpleasant.

Pleasant townhouse in a quiet location but unfortunately the pool was not fit for purpose having been internally painted with a sealant which was flaking off and so left loads of floating bits of plastic in the water. H&S issue? Very disappointed that we were not informed before our stay so we could have looked for an alternative, as booking accommodation with a private pool is a priority for us.

Alora May 2023

Our first time in Alora and what a surprise , the house was as described and had all and every amenity you could expect , down to a welcome pack which was a nice touch .The outside areas covered all bases , if you wanted to sunbathe there was an outdoor spacious terrace , and if you wanted to sit in the shade this was also possible . Tonnes of outdoor and indoor space and close enough to the town centre to walk there in 10 minutes or so , a fantastic place and a great holiday

What a lovely house!

This is a lovely house set in a quiet neighbourhood of Alora with no passing traffic but parking outside. All the bedrooms were of a good size with lovely wooden shutters and ceiling fans. It was great having the shower/wet room straight off the ground floor patio. No need to go inside when you needed the loo and drag pool water through the house. It has an excellent layout with a dining area straight off the kitchen. The kitchen was well-equipped and easy to keep clean. The outside areas are what really make this property special. The splash pool was perfect for cooling off. The middle floor terrace is covered with built in seating. The top terrace has the views! The terraces have lots of well cared for plants which adds to the atmosphere. The caretakers were really responsive to any request we had, as was the owner. El Chorro and the Caminito del Rey is not far away. We spent a few days at the inland beach at la Isla del Chorro which was superb and not crowded at all. A great house to base yourself for exploring the province of Malaga.

Great holiday, fantastic townhouse

Fantastic break at this spacious and conveniently located house in Alora. The outside space is wonderful and has many areas to sit, lounge about, sunbath and cool down. We spent most of our time outside during our stay, enjoying very lazy days . The interior is comfortable and spacious. The location is ideal you feel like you are in the centre of town near to bars, restaurants and shops but have peace and quiet during the day and night. We had very hot weather during our stay, only one wet day ! ( sorry Kevin couldnt resist) Kevin is a great owner who is friendly and his comunication is excellent. Joe and Brian who look after the house are friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Alora is a fantastic town with a bit of everything for all. Malaga is only a short train ride away which is a fabulous city. Caminto del ray is a must for anyone with a head for heights. We have already booked for next year.

Fantastic comfortable house

We had great time at Kevin's house. A very hot week but the shaded terrace was perfect and early morning on the top terrace waiting for the light over the hills was very beautiful and peaceful. The house is comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. The outside area is perfect for evening eating, very quiet and secluded and with easy access to the upper terraces. Having two bathrooms is very convenient and one being a wet room is perfect for anyone with restricted mobility. The situation of the house is private and safe and secure. Alora is such a lovely traditional Spanish town with good bars and restaurants. We visited Malaga, Ronda, Calahonda, beautiful Castellar, Jimena (bit of a drive but lovely roof top restaurant at El Anon) and walked the Caminito del Ray--so much to see and do. Thank you

.

It started off quite badly because the back door was stuck shut and the property manager had to come and fix it resulting in not being able to shut it when we went out. The property is very tired. The hob wouldn’t work and the dvd wouldn’t work. My husband has just had a stroke so the fact that it was on three levels outside should have been mentioned beforehand. Oh and the pool was leaking.

Lovely Home in the Sunshine

We had a lovely week in Alora. The house is well equipped and of a good size. All 3 bedrooms are large. The outdoor space is fantastic with 3 terraces plus the splash pool area which the children loved. There is plenty of sunshine but also plenty of shade available for when it gets too hot. We were delighted to receive a welcome pack on arrival which meant we didn’t need to head to shops straight away. Alora is a nice town to explore, the hills can be very steep at times but also short and manageable. It’s less than 10 minutes to walk into town where you will find plenty of places to eat and several supermarkets, one large one. We found the restaurants and shops fantastically priced especially when compared to the coast. We used the municipal pool a couple times, the changing rooms have had a refurbishment this year and it’s very clean. We got the train down to Malaga a couple of times, you can get a bus to and from the station for €1.55 each or we called a taxi for €5 with our cases on last day. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone wanting to visit the area. Kevin was also great to deal with responding to all queries promptly.

Thoroughly enjoyable stay

The house is located in a quiet area a short distance from the town centre. Views from the terrace are amazing. The house is well equipped with all you need for a comfortable, hassle free stay. The welcome pack adds a nice touch when arriving without provisions. As well as the shops in town where you can buy Fresh fish, Meat, Vegetables and fruit, there is a large Mercadona supermarket at the other end of town. Listen out for the horn of the bread van and fish van in the mornings where you can buy goods pretty much on the doorstep. All in all a good house in a nice location ideal for exploring the local area. The excellent rail links make getting out and about simple if you decide to take a break from driving. We took the train to Malaga on one occasion and Ronda on another.

Fantastic base for a family adventure in Andalucia

First impression of the house is wow! The pictures do not do this place justice, from the spacious living area and generous bedrooms through to the kitchen (with a welcome pack of bread, milk, snacks and wine) out to the traditionally decorate outside dining area you start to think you made the correct decision to come on holiday here. but, then you go up the stairs to the sun terrace with the plunge pool, BBQ and upper terrace area and you really know you have arrived at the perfect holiday home! We used the house as a base to explore the region, here are our tips : drive up to the lake (la Isla) at El Chorro and dive in to the water off a pedalo then stop off at la garganta on the way home. Get the train to Ronda from Alora station to visit the most stunning place you could hope to see. Get the train to Malaga Maria Zambrano and amble around this historic city, go to the Tuesday market at Fuengirola for bargains. Walk in to Alora in the evenings and eat Tapas in D'Kanas and have beers in the many bars while you soak up the Spanish way of life... you start to imagine yourself living here! But most of all don't forget to just relax in the sun drinking cruzcampo and cooking on the BBQ. Everything about this holiday and especially this property was wonderful and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing break away from the crowds and the beaten track. Thank you for sharing this wonderful house and allowing us to experience such a perfect holiday. We will be back.

A wonderful stay in an authentic Spanish townhouse

We couldn't fault Kevin the owner for his friendly communication, clear instructions and going that extra mile for a specific enquiry we had. Cuarenta is easy to find when driving and is in a fab location with awesome views across the valley and only a short 10 min walk to all the authentic Spanish bars/restaurants/shops. The Tapas was out of this world in every restaurant we tried and everything is such good value! Alora is a wonderfully charming town and one of our favourite places in Spain. The train station is only 5 mins drive down the road which offers a regular train service to Malaga and beyond, to the beaches at Torremelinos/Fuengirola. Cuarenta has a stunning little outdoor eating area right outside the kitchen designed with a lovely Spanish flavour and lots of well established plants. Up the steps off this area were a number of terraces, a brick-built BBQ, & a small but perfectly formed plunge pool which was really welcome as we experienced a heatwave when we were there. The property is very clean, well equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, etc and is really great value when compared to other properties. The only reason we didn't give it 5 stars is that, as there is no air con, when we experienced a rather unusual prolonged 38-40c heatwave in September, unfortunately the ceiling fans weren't enough and sleeping was rather difficult (although we totally appreciate that the cost of rental would need to go up to accommodate the cost of air con) so a large standalone fan in the bedrooms would be very welcomed. All in all, you really cannot go wrong staying here! It is a lovely property, great value, excellent location, with helpful owners, and in a really interesting, historic and friendly town....we will definitely be back! :-)

A delightful house with fantastic outdoor spaces

What a fabulous house Cuarenta is. We had a great week, a perfect mix of activity (Caminito del Rey is awesome, the flamingos less so because we couldn’t see them! And the Picasso museum at Malaga is definitely worth a visit) and relaxation in your wonderful array of outside spaces. Alora is great and we ate out a couple of times but also enjoyed using your BBQ.

A Taste of Real Spain

Just to say, we have had the most wonderful time in Alora. The villa was beautiful and so tastefully decorated. The town was a delight and on a couple of days we took the opportunity to take the breath taking drive into the mountains to the lakes of El Chorro and enjoyed swimming in the lake and sampling the food at El Mirador. It was stunning! We also went into Malaga by train, a fascinating city contrasting the strikingly modern and stylish port area with the traditional old town. All in all, a fabulous holiday which we all enjoyed immensely and would love to return to one day.

Climber's Paradise

What a perfect week in Alora! The climbing areas in El Chorro were astonishing beautiful and this feeling was strengthened by the Cuarenta House. A house in which we totally relaxed, felled like home from the first minute and truly had everything we needed (hot water, nice beds, terraces in the sun and a greatly equipped kitchen). Picture this: starting a day with a nice cup of coffee in the early morning, seeing the sun rise, with nothing but white houses, calmness and a mountain view from your own terrace.. This was not something we were used to (we come from a total flat country). A truly magical week..! Thank you very much for this beautiful week and we hope we will be allowed to use the house once more in the future when we return to the nostalgic rocks. Kind Regards, Marc, Makosja, Koen and Robbert from the Netherlands ^.^

A perfect base to explore Southern Andalucia...

My wife and I spent a fantastic week here in June. From the initial enquiry with Kevin until the post-holiday chat we found him to be nothing short of faultless. It was our first holiday booked through a private rental website and I obviously had initial concerns...but believe me, there is nothing to worry about! The property itself is beautifully located in a "proper" Spanish town, a short drive from Malaga and the airport. Rail links with the city are frequent and easy. The first thing that strikes you as you enter the house is the size...three good sized bedrooms, a decent living area and a pretty well appointed kitchen. At this point you wonder if you are at the right place...the price paid seems such good value! And then you walk out into the back courtyard... Past the outdoor dining area and up the stairs. Past the pool...admittedly small, but perfect for a refreshing plunge. Past the barbeque and the first level sunbeds and swing lounger... And on to the upper terrace with yet more seating. The views afforded from here left me speechless. I spent most of my waking time at the house standing with a beer just taking in the view. Even after nightfall it is nice to sit here and gaze at the stars...there is hardly any light pollution here so the extreme dark offers a great view of the night sky. Alora itself is situated halfway between the Costa Del Sol, with its bustling resorts, and the spectacular lakes and mountains of El Chorro...both within a half hour drive. Further afield lie Marbella, an hour's drive, and Gibraltar...well worth the hour and a half car journey. Malaga, with its fantastic Cathedral, museums and endless tapas bars is a short, cheap train ride away. If it has not already become obvious...I loved my week here and would recommend a stay here to anybody. We WILL be going back...

I'm sixty-eight and semi-retired, my wife is sixty and the two children are at the point of flying the nest. We've been coming to this house since 2005 and we still enjoy it as much as the first year we came - and we can say the same for Alora and all the enchanting places surrounding. We intend to spend as much time here as we can!!!

Why they chose this property

It ticked every box! We wanted inland, we wanted somewhere with great views and easy access to the countryside but we also wanted the amenities of a town (particularly a good choice of bars and restaurants). So that's me happy, exploring in the day and drinking wine at night. But my wife wisely pointed out, if the children were going to buy into it long term there had to be something for them as well. There's lots of children's play parks and a lovely big open air pool in the town but it was proximity to Aqualand, Tivoli World Funpark, Selwo Marina etc. on the coast that sold them. Everybody happy!!
