Can’t say enough about this spot. If you’re looking to get fully emerged into the local culture on one of the best surf spots in the area, then this is your spot. Shut off the phones and wax up the boards. Surf all day then mind surf while relaxing in your own private pool right on the cliff or the huge covered back porch while Maria whips you up some amazing comidas locales. This spot is where surf dreams are made into reality!! We will be back again and again and again. Muchas Gracias Douglas and crew!!! We encanta la Casa De Karma.

It doesn't get any better then this when looking to be right on one of the best point breaks in EL Salvador. Doug and his crew were amazing. Just about a 30 second walk down the steps and right onto the beach. Clean pool with a great view. Cold ac in the bedrooms made for some excellent sleep along with the waves rumbling in the background. Nothing better then enjoying some local coffee in the outdoor kitchen watching the waves roll down the point. Pretty much the perfect surf trip setup! We will be back. Thanks again Doug!

Best Location, Amazing Views,Instant Access Surfing,Incredible Hospitality,Best Cultural Experience

My Family and I had an amazing stay at Casa de Karma. The Care Takers are incredibly friendly and very understanding of our lack of language skills. Maria’s meals that she prepared for us multiple times daily were so tasty and made with special touches. The beach and surf was just a short walk down the stairs and was perfect us as it was friendly, warm and uncrowded. The local kids knew our names by our 2nd day & brought us seafood galore, fresh fish, lobster, oysters (shucked and ready to eat) we were in Pacific Ocean heaven. We felt right at home, safe and incredibly welcome in this very special little neighborhood. We also had an amazing cultural experiences while visiting, as they set up daily tours of the different highlights of the Country, waterfalls, Mayan ruins, volcanoes, zip lining and too much to do on one trip. We look forward to returning next year! Gracias, Maria, Ernesto, Micol & Antonio

Perfect beach/surf get-a-way!

Our trip to Casa de Karma was incredible. First and foremost, Doug was an amazing host. He took the time before our trip to talk to us about everything to expect and know starting from the minute we stepped off the plane until arriving at his property. He even hooked us up with a local grocery list of food to buy for our stay on the way to his place. Doug made sure we were never without during our stay from surf destinations to adventures to creature comforts. As well, Doug made it very easy to plan any day trips such as a waterfall tour or surf trip down the coast. When we arrived at his place, we were blown away by the incredible views, not to mention a perfect right point break out front. It was easy to stay at his place all day with access to surf, swimming in his private pool or even just relaxing in the hammock. His property was secure and we felt safe throughout our stay. The A/C in the rooms is also a bonus! Doug employs some amazing local hands who took excellent care of us especially Maria whipping up delicious meals throughout the day. We highly recommend visiting El Salvador if not for the amazing surf then for the incredible culture, people and sites. If you are lucky enough to make the trip you 100% want to stay with Doug at Casa de Karma.

Cliff side surf house paradise

this is a very unique house tucked inside a small private neighborhood. Everyone working for Doug was extremely nice and helpful. Maria is an awesome cook! Doug was always around when you needed to make any arrangements and a classic character. One of the great things about the house is the location on the cliff side, great views and a nice breeze. The breeze is especially nice in the tropical heat. There were many surf surf options within a ten minute walk from the house. K59 was always empty at sunrise where u could surf it alone. If it got crowded more than 5 people, there were many options walking up k61 and the various books and crannies between them. There were no one really surfing any of those breaks. Much recommended

Amazingly relaxing family vacation

The property was impressive from the very first glance. Full ocean view, warm breezes and a friendly welcome from all. This house is more like a terraced estate. Every spot that you place your feet onto has an ocean view. There are plenty of hammocks to relax and sink it all in. The beach is literally just steps away, and it is expansive and breathtaking. The ocean is consistently pumping out endless waves, without a crowd to steal your ride. Doug was a great host. He set up excursions, a surprise surfing adventure by boat, and even had a masseuse on hand! Maria, the exquisite cook, was a pure delight. She brought a smile to all of our faces and kept our bellies full! We will return....hopefully sooner than later!

Surf trip

My husband and a friend wanted to surf El Salvador. So we went to Casa de Karma which is right at K59. They had a great time in the water and loved that they could roll out of bed and into the surf. Dream come true. The house is very nice. Very cool design, big deck with hammocks to laze away the afternoons and take in the view. Big dining table on the deck as well to enjoy outdoor meals. AC in the bedrooms was a plus. The pool was a great spot to chill in and my son loved it ,as the rips and waves in the ocean out front were not for kid swimming. The view from the house is gorgeous. We fell asleep to crashing waves every night. Doug was a great host. He provided us with anything we needed. Maria and her family also live on the property. Maria is the sweetest lady and will cook you delicious meals whenever you want. She even taught me how to make papusas. Doug had a couple local drivers to pic us up from the airport or take us to town when we felt like a change of pace. This is the way to go as renting cars in El Salvador can be tricky. We also felt safer driving with a local. Doug's property is well secured and he is close with the local community and they all seem to look out for eachother. Very nice neighborhood with lovely people. The surf camp a couple doors down on the beach has fast wifi (if you have to work a bit). It is also a good place to meet people from all over the world. The palapas on the beach have great local seafood meals. We loved our stay and are very grateful to Doug for our week long home away from home. Oh, the house also comes with some very sweet doggies!

Can't Wait To Go Back!

My husband and I stayed for a week at Doug's home in Taquillo. Before we even got there, we knew it would be a fantastic trip, Doug's communication with us was remarkable. He arranged for everything we asked for and more. Dinners overlooking the ocean, surfing, trips to local villages and Mayan ruins. He even helped me plan a birthday surprise for my husband. We looked forward to seeing him and his wonderful staff each day. The house is gorgeous and the views from every angle are just stunning. We could not have been more pleased with this getaway!

Excellent overall

We had a wonderful time overall. The house and location are even better than what the pictures would suggest. The area was especially notable in the wonderful people. My 7 and 14-year-olds were warmly greeted by the local kids and the place is wonderful for children. Doug and the staff were attentive, friendly and very pleasurable to be around without being intrusive or overbearing. I highly recommend the place and we hope to make a trip back sometime.

Great stay at Playa Taquillo and Casa Karma

Our family enjoyed a fantastic stay at Casa Karma and Play Taquillo. The owner, Doug, is so incredibly knowledgeable about the people and places of El Salvador. He has been a part of the country for decades, and he has a wealth of stories and relationships that help make our stay truly unique. The people of Taquillo are so very special as well. This is not a heavily touristy beach, so your interactions with the residents of Taquillo is one that is authentic and genuine. They are immensely welcoming and kind. We surfed and played soccer with people who have lived much of their lives at Taquillo, and we ate oysters almost every day from local fisherman who caught them fresh daily. In all, the experience was wonderful, and we look forward to going back.

About the host

Host profile image
I've been fortunate enough to have been a visitor to this wonderful Country and its incredibly hospitable, humble people for over 35 years now.
I have also traveled the globe for over 40 years and this place has captured my heart like no other
I especially enjoy showing people parts of this Country that you the average visitor would never see.
Believe me there are many magical adventures to be had within the borders of this small Country and the Islands that border the east of the country.
I know of many places in this tropical paradise that you would guess that you are elsewhere in the world.
My connection to this country is lengthy and ever developing as we have a very special neighborhood that I enjoy giving back to when and where possible.
My 1974 Land Rover has been nick named by the locals as Carro Fantasma (everything here has a second name) and is know up and down the coast as well as deep into the mountains and rivers.
No worries, we have professional full time drivers with current/safe vehicles if you are not in for an adventure in Carro Fantasma.
We can arrange a 1/4, 1/2 or full day trips to whatever you would like to do or see with in and around El Salvador and beyond!
We are also affiliated with other operations throughout different parts of the country, so if you desire a multiple location visit we can assist you there as well.
I encourage anyone of any age or family size to visit this incredible Country.
I have been all throughout Latin America and there is something phenomenal and special about this El Salvador.
Maybe it's the smell of the burning wood fires pushed by off shore winds as the local prepare fresh fish and pupusas over salt soaked drift wood as you surf a perfect right hand wave to the beach at sunset.
El Salvador has so much to do and see, as well as it is safe and secure to travel.
Poetry in Motion by the Ocean!

Why they chose this property

The Surf break out front has always been one of my favorites.
This property is out of town (La Libertad) and off the beaten path, incredibly beautiful / private.
It features perfect uncrowded surf (for regular and goofy footers) which is located right at the bottom of our stairs to the beach, with friendly locals that are a blast to surf, fish, laugh and play soccer with.
The house sits on a cliff away from the beach providing complete privacy.
You can sit in the pool or hammock sipping your beverage of choice while watching the surf and local soccer game.
The Property itself is amazing as it is spans over multiple acres with miles of walking trails through the dense surrounding jungle. Which will eventually lead you to to the KM 59 restaurant on the Pan American Hwy.
As you cruise the property there are mango tree's, almond tree’s, a Plumeria Tree forest, Mayan Caves, Natural Jacuzzi's with mineral water dripping from the ceilings, endless birds etc.
This is one of the largest Ocean Front properties in the Western region of the Country, many times I go weeks without leaving the property.
Our care taker and neighbors friend are two of the best fisherman in the area, therefore fresh sea food is abundant daily.
Being that the property is so large, you can easily separate from travel companions and enjoy some quality time alone.
With a great view of The KM59 & KM61 point breaks, you simply choose your point prior to walking down the stairs to indulge yourself in 86 degree water and perfect waves.
The Family will be sure that you are well fed before and after every surf session.
As will the locals, with fresh oysters, lobster, fish, pupusas to offer daily.
The local boys who fish the beach will also host your dinner seaside after preparing it in banana leaves over a fire pit.
When the music starts around the fire, you end up watching the sunset and off shore winds groom perfect waves.
We invite you to enjoy Central America's smallest Nation.
Saludos Doug

What makes this property unique

The original piece of property involved 3 terraces leading to the Ocean.
We spent five years just building Mayan style walls to secure the property for development.
We decided on a round structure with round cylinders for ambiance and Ocean views.
The home features two levels.
As you enter the house you are on the friends level which includes the friends bedroom with 2 twin beds (also designed to combine into a queen size) as well as 2 air beds. Guest bathroom with limestone shower and the large open air kitchen in the round which faces the Ocean and the Mountains.
You then proceed down four stairs to the second larger circular central living room, bar, master bedroom and two arched doorways out to the 200 degree Ocean Front terrace. Once on the terrace you are directly in front of a private swimming pool, beach with 86 degree Ocean water and perfect waves and friendly swimming.
To access the beach you simply walk down the stairs, through another doorway and onto the beach.
If you are off for a surf there is a waxing station at the bottom of the stairs.
If you notice the lineup out front is a bit more crowded than you prefer, just walk five minutes west to the next right hand point break K61, which usually has minimal or no people.
If your just beach cruising to the left (east) there are endless tide pools, little caves, private beaches etc. all of which the access is tide dependent.
Sunsets and sunrises from every angle of the property are some of our favorites as well as the full moon nights glowing over the Ocean.
From the top of the property you can see multiple points down the coast as well as the the mountain top.
Our care taker Family have been living on the property for fifty years, working around the property daily to ensure safety and beauty.
The Family will ensure that you have cultural memorable experience.
We also offer a menu of Country tours to waterfalls, ancient pueblos, fishing, historical Mayan sites, as day trips to other surf breaks.
