This historic property has its quirks, but on balance it cannot be considered anything but excellent.
The apartments themselves are conveniently located. They are on the Friedrichstrasse about a half mile south of Under the Lindens, so it’s just south of the center of the major area in Berlin you are likely visiting. The street itself at one time was THE address in Berlin. With the WWII bombings, this is one of the only, if the only, original structures left more or less intact. It is probably the most attractive building on the street for many blocks. They have a book on the building’s history (in German).
It is near Checkpoint Charlie., which is worth a walk-through for historic reasons, but the guard shack there is not the original one. There are one or two smaller museums about the wall right by – there are several such attractions around Berlin, including the DDR museum and the Wall Memorial about a mile to the north. There are many sites that may be of interest in the area, including a Trabi museum (yes, it leans towards kitsch) and the cite of Gestapo headquarters (which definitely does not).
In terms of getting around Berlin, you are a 5-minute walk from the U-Bahn station, and about two stops from Under the Linden. The U-Bahn system is excellent and fast – we found it very quick and easy to get where we wanted. If you choose to walk, you will cross one of many sites of the Berlin wall and there is a shopping district about a block north of Checkpoint Charlie that goes on for several blocks. There is also a grocery store ( Lidl or Aldi) about a block and a half away.
The apartments are very large and spacious, with high ceilings. We found it easy to spread out and the apartments were very comfortable. They appear to be newly renovated, but in any case are in excellent condition. The bathrooms, too, are spacious and modern. Wi-fi was easy, fast, and reliable.
For the most part the apartments are quiet, but we did get some neighborhood noise on a Saturday night. It wasn't a big deal.
TWO NOTES: there are actually 4 or so apartments on the site. Only one has the beautiful wooden ceilings shown in some of the photos. Double-check if its important to you.
Second: These are on the second floor (3rd floor to Americans). It's 50 steps and about 4 flights to your door. We had no issues, but if you are mobility impaired, it might be.
These apartments are an excellent choice if you are visiting Berlin on holiday.
