We recently stayed here with extended family as we explored the Black Hills and this spot was just heavenly. The house was fully stocked and had plenty of space on the inside, and there was a large yard, fire pit, and even some nearby farm animals to keep our family entertained outside. The location to Custer and tourist attractions was perfect. Would stay here again!
Perfect little house just a few miles from town. Easy short drive into town for food/supplies, but far enough out you have space and privacy. Large yard for kids to run around in and have a fire. Very easy check in, and communication with the host was quick and efficient.
It was the perfect property for peace, quiet and relaxation with the family! Super close to Custer for access to an last minute amenities. Really great location as ‘home-base’ with convenient access to all the great parks and hiking SD has to offer.
The Little Red Inn is a perfect place to have a large group of family stay and be very comfortable! My brothers and their adult children came for my mom’s 80th birthday celebration. The cabin was close to town, very clean and comfortable! We had a great time making s’mores at the fire pit a few nights. Highly recommend!
Amazing location, beautiful area, great property for our family, and a gracious host. Our family was blessed by this host and property experience. I'd highly recommend to anyone! We'll be back!!
Beautiful setting, right by Custer park and scenic drives
Great setting and check in and out. Well-equipped kitchen and lots of room. Master bed seemed to sag a little and freezer sometimes didn’t seal well. Would definitely come back.
Great place to stay and relax. Nice and quiet, but close to Custer if you need any supplies. Would highly recommend and would definitely stay again if in the area.
The house was very clean and many amenities were provided. There was plenty of space for our two families to sleep. The bunkbed room was a favorite of our kids! The location was central to many of the activities we were looking forward to doing. The area around the house was nice and quiet and had plenty of space for the kids to run around and play. There were a few issues however. The internet was very slow and one of the tv's was not working. The beds had very uncomfortable and very used mattresses. There was also no dishwasher which was unexpected. Overall the house worked for our short trip, but would probably look for another VRBO in the area in the future.
Great location for all things Black Hills. Enjoyed the area and the place was perfect for us. Spotless in terms of cleanliness, wildlife all around and open area air outside with no one around.
We stayed here during the labor day weekend of 2021 for 3 nights.
The location was very nice, convenient and peaceful. Surrounded by wildlife. Deer in the front yard every evening and howl of the wolves at a distance.
The property itself shows age, but it is presented very well w/ clean kitchen, bath and bedrooms.
Just as we checked in, we were told that the dryer had stopped working and a new one wasn't going to be installed until we checked out. So, we used the clothesline in the backyard on day 1. Much to our surprise, while we were gone, a new dryer had been installed, which we used the second day onward. This showed us that the owner cares very much about living up to the expectations she set. A+
We enjoyed the fire pit in the yard. Everything was very peaceful and convenient.
I highly recommend this property and any other property from Joy.
Lovely little home and the property is in a great location. Close to Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument. Deer visit every night, and we even were visited by wild turkeys.
Down town Custer is very close. Grocery store will have everything you need. Local restaurants are very good. Don't miss out on the breakfast at Dakota Cowboy just a little out of town. We ate there the morning we left for home.
The home was just perfect for our family of four. Our boys loved the yard, fire pit and the pretty cows that were right there by the home. We only ate breakfast at the home during our stay, however, this kitchen will have everything you need for each meal. They do offer a grill and a flat top grill that are stored in the garage.
There is no central AC, however, with so much to do and see we were not home during the day. We would get home each evening around 7... open the windows with the ceiling fans on and the house cools down very quickly. The windows have wonderful little cranks on them, so quaint. Tons of windows for the view of the yard and the rocks out the side door.
Our boys slept well in the bottom bunks, and we slept well in the king master bed. The bed has def. indentions and you sink pretty far in, but we still slept well. Leave the bathroom window by the sink cranked open a tad with the cool SD air blowing in.. heaven!
If you are traveling with anyone that has even slight mobility issues just be aware that the front deck to get into the home doesn't have railings on the steps. It would be a little precarious for anyone with issues walking up steps.
Wonderful stay!
We spent a week in this cute little red house and had a wonderful time. The layout was super convenient for us and our two friends. We used the well-supplied kitchen every day and enjoyed the grill and fire pit. The beds were plush and comfy. It’s not fancy and a little worn but it had everything we needed.
Our favorite part was the welcome crew of cows in the front pasture that we visited with every day. We also saw turkeys, great blue herons and deer cross the yard and heard many coyote at night. The property was so quiet and backs up to a nature area with nearby trails if you wanted to take a days rest from the numerous amazing state and national park adventures nearby. Star gazing was a little though with the security light right behind the house.
We also loved eating on the convertible picnic table on the front porch to enjoy the view of the nearby rock formations. Just a wonderful spot.
Loved the location for everything we wanted to. The owners were great to work with. Would stay here again.

About the host
Hosted by Matt Brown and Joy Falkenburg
Dr. Joy Falkenburg and her husband, Matt Brown, have lived in the Black Hills since 1999. In 2013, they purchased the Little Red Inn and opened it for use as a vacation home the following year. They reside next to Custer State Park with their family and enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Black Hills and all it has to offer all year long. They are locally available to give advice and help with needs that may arise.
Why they chose this property
We live just down the road from the Little Red Inn. It had been for sale and every time we drove by we thought about buying it and opening it up for vacationers to enjoy when they stayed in the Black Hills. It is in a beautiful location and is close enough to both Custer and Custer State Park to be the perfect spot for people who are visiting the Hills. The granite outcroppings east of Custer and Calamity Peak are just across the road from the Little Red Inn. Calamity Peak is one of the most photographed granite peaks in the Hills. It is fantastic in any season. The snow falling on the granite outcroppings is incredibly beautiful and the green grass and quietness of the Hills are soothing. I love the two areas of the house where adults can sit and visit but kids could watch TV at night in the lower level. I like to be able to visit with my family when I travel and put kids to bed if need be. Also, kids need a space to run and play. This offers a safe place for them to play and enjoy the outdoors.
What makes this property unique
A true Black Hills Experience. Enjoy the night air around the firepit. During the day, go see the sights.
