About this property

Isolated lakeside house, view of glaciers & volcanoes, good for day trips - new!

Herrukot, our holiday home built in 2015, is located in a gorgeous isolated location right on the lakeside. The house contains two separate bedrooms, each with very comfortable beds that are 90x200 cm in size, a bathroom with a floor-level shower, underfloor heating throughout the house, living/dining room with a pull-out sofa bed for two, and a completely equipped kitchen including a dishwasher, a ceramic-top stove (4 hobs), and an oven. With a floor area of 66 sq.m, it offers a relaxing vacation. Wi-Fi is available at no cost, as well as bed linen, bath towels, and dish towels. The icing on the cake is the 60-sq.m wooden terrace with its own hot tub and a fantastic view of the lake, mountains, and the Hekla Volcano. The house is somewhat isolated, though because of its ideal location in the Southern Region, it is great for winter stays. The Northern Lights are a completely different experience as there are no lights from nearby houses. Our farmhouse is just 400 m away, you can certainly ride out from our farm. We're happy to help if you have any questions about your vacation. We have plenty vacation planning tips! We put a major focus on ensuring that your individual wishes are fulfilled, and are happy to help plan your excursions!

Splendid Isolation

Beautiful house in a spectacular setting. The house is central for all of the main tourist attractions. We had a lovely view of the northern lights one night. Would recommend to everyone.

A beautiful, peaceful location

This small cottage has everything for a relaxed stay. It is in an idyllically remote setting but only a few minutes by car to the main road. Good shopping in Selfoss for supplies. It has 2 bedrooms and one bathroom. Ideal for a family of 4. It is warm and cosy and has a anti room with the washing machine and drying rack. This room is very good for drying. We had a lovely stay. Thank you.

Tranquil retreat by the lake

We stayed at this lovely cottage in February 2023. The view from the cottage is absolutely amazing. Looking out over the lake. There is a natural spring hot tub on the porch, the water is toasty, and warmed your bones through. The cottage is cozy, with heated floors, cozy bedrooms and great bathroom/shower. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you could need but the utensil drawers are at eye level for me so I couldn’t get to them. Fortunately my husband is 6ft 4. The internet is intermittent but what else can you expect in the middle of nowhere. The hosts were very responsive and friendly and answered all and any questions. We were able to pet the horses nearby. There are shops nearby in Selfoss around 20 minutes away. The weather was not kind on our trip to start with, it was the end of a storm so very windy. However, the last days it was calm, with beautiful blue sunny skies. A lovely break in Iceland and we would definitely recommend this cottage.

Remote but perfect

Spectacularly located on the edge of a lake with all amenities that you would need for a comfortable secluded stay, even including the Icelandic essential “hot pot” ! Highly recommended.

Cozy cabin, stunning views and great location,

We stayed here for a week in September and had the most amazing trip! The weather was beautiful and the views from the cabin are stunning with the tranquil lake waters, wonderful wildlife and Hekla in the distance. This is a perfect base whether you want to visit the nearby sites or, like us, want to be more adventurous and travel into the highlands or to Black Diamond beach, to experience the full beauty and spectacular scenery this country has to offer, before returning home for a soak in the hot tub. The cabin offers privacy and a sense of remoteness yet Selfoss and Hella are only a short drive away for picking up provisions or dining out. We would thoroughly recommend this property which is cozy, clean, well equipped and in a superb location.

Excellent cottage in a beautiful location

Renate's cottage really made our trip, it is a beautiful place to stay. The house was clean, tidy and very welcoming. We visited in winter and the house was always warm to come home to, the hot tub also was wonderful and definitely warm enough to completely relax in. The kitchen is well equipped and there were a few store cupboard essentials. There are plenty of Iceland guidebooks and games in the living room to keep you entertained. Renate was always very friendly and came to our rescue immediately when the driveway was blocked by snow... she and her husband came out to clear it and kept checking it was passable for the rest of our stay. Would highly recommend staying here, we would love to come back one day soon!

Beautiful getaway

Lovely chalet in a scenic secluded location, but only a couple of miles from the main highway. Perfect for a relaxing getaway, easy for day trips to all the waterfalls and scenery points on the Golden Circle. The house has lovely underfloor (geothermal) heating making it really cosy and the hot tub (also geothermal) is a perfect place to relax. Well equipped kitchen, two twin bedrooms and a comfy living room with views across the lake to the surrounding hills and (on a clear day) to Hekla. No light pollution so clear skies means stunning stars and a good chance of aurora.

Peaceful cottage

Herrukot is in an excellent location for touring the highlights of the south of Iceland. Its position on the lakeside is lovely and the views are beautiful. The house is well appointed, clean and the hot tub is perfect for relaxing in after a busy day. It was also useful having a washing machine at the property. We introduced ourselves to Renate soon after arrival and we were left alone for the rest of the stay although Renate was contactable if we needed her. Renate thoughtfully suggested that we left the rubbish at the house if we had an early departure flight, but this wasn't necessary in our case. We loved our stay at Herrukot.

Beautiful, clean, warm, quiet - everything we wanted for our first visit to Iceland!

What a fantastic cabin! The photos are spot-on and previous reviews are very accurate. Location is perfect for touring the south coast /golden circle areas as it lies barely 5 mins off the main route 1, but is totally peaceful and quiet. The interior is immaculate and clean and very practical to use and lovely and warm thanks to the underfloor heating. Whatever i can think of saying has already been said by other visitors....perfect! Thank you Renate and family for helping make our stay so relaxing! I truly hope we get the chance to visit Iceland again in future - if we do our first job will be to try and book some time here again. Jon & Angharad - Wales.

Perfection!

Five of us shared this lovely cabin, and we would not have changed a thing! The location was breathtakingly beautiful and well-placed for day trips to rivers, waterfalls, geysers, national landmarks, and every stop on the Golden Circle. Oh, and the hot tub was heavenly! The hosts were kind and helpful! I look forward to planning a return visit! Thank you!!

Warm and quiet with beautiful scenery.

We had a very enjoyable stay here. The area feels quite remote while still being close to the main road and not far from services and places to eat. We found it to be very pleasant and warm, which was just what we needed as the average temperature during our stay was -11°c. Everything was simple and practical. The hot tub was great with a great view of the (frozen) lake and we even got to see the aurora put on a show several times during our stay. Renate was very nice and helpful and has a lovely dog who just wanted to play. I highly recommend staying here, especially if you are traveling a lot as we were. It has a great location and seems to be surronded but most of the places we wanted to visit.

Lovely house on the lake

After arriving from a 6 hour drive from the north we arrived at the house, it was very easy to find, signposted off the road. Was lovely and warm already inside and the hot tub was ready for us to jump into. Everything was all very clean and it was very well stocked. Beds were comfy. as were out for most the day, unfortunately we didn’t see much of the house but had a nice time in the evening relaxing. A great base for seeing the south of Iceland and close to airport

Beautiful Setting

My wife and I loved our stay at Renate's property. It was great for us to be away to be able to see the stars and the Northern Lights. The hot tub is a real delight. The house has all the things in it to have a very comfortable stay. We were there for 6 days and will try and come back again. Thanks Renate. Dave and Sue

Lovely hot tub with a fantastic view!

Very comfortable and well equipped accommodation. Owners were very very helpful with queries/requests. The location is very peaceful and secluded but still very convenient for local amenities and sights. We were treated to a beautiful sunset at the end of the drive where the horses came to say hello!

Excellent

My boyfriend and I came to Iceland with his Grandfather and mother. Grandad has a bucket list and Iceland was up there at the top. The accommodation was perfectly located for all our day trips, meaning that we didn't need to spend too long in the car. Being placed on the edge of lake with no distractions, made sitting in the hot tub enjoying the view a really relaxing treat. The kitchen was very well equipt, beds nice and comfy, and all together very clean and well presented. I would highly reccomend staying here and would definitely return one day.

About the host

Host profile image
Our German/Icelandic family has lived on the Herridarholi farm, some 400 m from the holiday home by the lake. We run a guesthouse there during the summer, and offer riding tours. Our agricultural operation runs year-round, with sheep, horses, and dairy cows.

Why they chose this property

Since Iceland is worth a visit even outside of the summer, we decided to offer vacations year-round as well. That's why we built a holiday home on the prettiest part of our 400-hectare farm, and so our Herrukot holiday home was born.

What makes this property unique

The isolated lakeside location allows for a relaxing vacation, especially when combined with the central location and the good access road. The house is so spacious and comfortable that even spending a day indoors when the weather isn't good is a fine holiday experience. The hot tub during a snowstorm or under the northern lights is an unforgettable experience!
