About this property

Central to Beaufort, HHI, birding refuges, Parris Island. Pet & family friendly.

Attending Parris Island graduation? Looking for a home base for your Lowcountry getaway? Want to bring Fido along?

Explore one of the most beautiful areas in South Carolina from pet-friendly, accessible Broadview Cottage.

Great central location for exploring or birding the SC Lowcountry: easy access to National Wildlife Refuges, ACE Basin, and golf courses; approximately 30-45 minutes from Bluffton, Hilton Head, Beaufort, and Parris Island; 50 minutes from Savannah, just a hop-and-skip from I-95.

Broadview Cottage nestles in a unique community just 5 miles off I-95 (SC exit 28, Coosawhatchie). Palm Key is a quiet, casual gathering of cottages which invites the visitor to enjoy the lovely peace of the woods, pond, and Broad River marshes. Our cottage offers visitors the opportunity to escape into nature, to leave the bustling world behind--while being conveniently located for visits to nearby Parris Island, beaches, golf courses, and shopping in Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head, and Savannah.

Entertainment nearby or on site:
* Take day trips to nearby travel destinations: Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head, Hunting Island, Parris Island, the Penn Center, Savannah, and more (you’ll find brochures at the cottage, or, on I-95, stop at the SC Welcome Center or Exit 33’s Frampton Visitor’s Center for information)
* Golf at Hilton Head and other courses
* Bring your kayaks to enjoy the nearby Broad River or any of the other nearby salt creeks and black water rivers.
*Bring your bikes; the neighborhood is bike-and-kid friendly.
*Visit the “trestle road,” a former railroad bed (now just gravel) that juts out across the marsh and ends at the Broad River
* Bring your fishing pole! Fish in the pond or at the nearby trestle pier.
* Wander along the marsh and in Palm Key’s Mystical Park with oyster-shell labyrinth
* Bird along the marsh and nearby marsh islands—this area has around 250 species to be seen, depending on time of year—for example, painted buntings, pine warblers, wood storks, eagles, osprey, egrets, pelicans, and screech owls.
* Bring your camera and enjoy the outdoors.

Broadview Cottage was designed to encourage visitors to look out—a wide expanse of windows in each room gives onto marsh views, with live oaks covered in Spanish moss, to the sun rising over the Broad River, to wood storks soaring.

Our wide porch invites you to relax with a book in the swing or chat with friends over drinks. Inside, the open floor plan encourages conversation, relaxation, and visiting.

Home Sweet Home

Broadview is such an appropriate name for the cottage. Such amazing views of the marsh and Broad River. It always feels so comfortable and welcoming. After staying as many times as possible since 2016, it truly is our home away from home. Relaxing, peaceful and beautiful are just a few words to describe this awesome place. April and Jody are always available for questions or a quick chat. Just a wonderful place!

Sweet Marshfront Cottage

Every detail about our stay was wonderful. We stayed for the entire month of June as our home was undergoing renovations. This sweet cottage was a great home away from home. It was cozy and comfortable. The views were stunning. The neighborhood of Palm Key was quiet and tranquil which was exactly what we wanted. We brought our dog and were so impressed by how dog friendly this cottage was. April and Jody, the property owners were so wonderful to work with and we are so grateful they shared their home with us.

Cozy, comfy and charming. Beautiful views of the marsh, changing with the tides. Nice community of cottages in a rural setting. Out of the city and into nature.

Well maintained property right on the marsh. Was nice to get away for the weekend. You're about 30 mins to the downtown areas of Beaufort or Bluffton so you're close but also far enough away that you don't have the crowds. We had a lot of fun fishing the neighborhood pond.

Nice stop over from long travel day

Nice stop over from long travel day! As seniors making our way down to Florida for a couple of weeks, we knew we wanted to take time out from the long drive and appreciate some of the marsh and coastal areas. This is a quaint cottage that makes one feel like they’re going to grandmas house! Very comfortable furniture. Very quiet community. We would definitely stop here again for a couple of days.

This place was honestly one of my favorite places I have stayed at on vacation. The morning sunrises over the marsh are so beautiful! The place was very clean and felt like home. My sweet Stitch (French bulldog) loved it as well. I would highly recommend it to families and especially those needing handicap access. My mom was able to get around great while we were here! There are no steps to the front entrance of the house and a handicap accessible shower.

Quiet Getaway

We really enjoyed our day here. The home was cozy and clean. Our dogs loved it and they even had a little toy for them to bring home. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to enjoy a pot of coffee or cook a meal. The back porch was amazing. We were able to take in all the sound, smells, and amazing view is the marsh. It’s really something to take in. Sunrise and sunset can be seen from the entire back of the home and they are beautiful. We didn’t want to leave.

So Easy

Very clean and organized. Beautiful views right outside the floor length windows where we could catch the sunrise as well as the moon over the marsh!! All the essentials and more, even a toy basket where my dog got to pick one out for herself! Very easy to find pots and pans and they even have handmade pottery dishes. Beautifully decorated, not overdone but just right. I hope we can come again. PS. We found the town of Ridgeland very warm and friendly.

Fabulous. This is a home, not a rental

Our dogs, and therefore we felt so welcome. Toys for dogs, fleece blankets to put on the furniture should you want to snuggle with your dogs. Also, lots of spices and condiments so you can cook in without packing up your own kitchen. Beautiful views. We used all 4 bikes. What a treat! I even tried the hoolahoop.

Perfect cottage!

This was the perfect rental for us! We loved the split floor plan with bedrooms on opposite sides of the cottage as it afforded plenty of privacy for the three of us. We spent most mornings out on the porch with our coffee, enjoying the calls of the birds and even spotted a Bald Eagle flying over the marsh! The cottage was comfortable and cooking meals was easy in the efficient kitchen. Internet speed was great and having a smart tv for the few days we were inside was welcomed. We enjoyed walking in the quiet neighborhood with our dog and found the neighbors quite friendly. Communication with April was always easy and prompt. Simply put, we couldn’t have asked for a better host or cottage. We highly recommend this cottage and we will be back!

Cozy and magical spot on tidal marsh

As comfortable and convenient as home, but without all the clutter and things that need your attention! I stayed at Broadview for five nights and loved it. The cottage is beautifully furnished, but in a cozy, low-key way. There are lots of comfortable reading chairs, each with a reading lamp. The bookcase is full of books that are either among your favorites or books you have been meaning to read. The back of the cottage faces the marsh with floor to ceiling windows and french doors across the entire length (living room and both bedrooms), opening on to a huge deck overlooking the tidal marsh. The light here is unbelievably beautiful, from sunrise over the marsh to the pink backwash of the sunset. There is nothing you will need that April hasn't stocked here from plastic ziplock bags to dog treats; she has thought of everything. She and Jody have combed the area for interesting things to see and do and provide detailed recommendations. There is something for everyone. This is an amazing site for bird-watching and nature photography, as well as history, food and interesting culture. The location feels very remote in terms of privacy, quiet and nature, but you can be out and about in no time. You will have as much or as little as you want to do and you will leave with lots of things you want to check out next time. Will definitely be back!

Great Experience

We had a wonderful 4-night stay and were surprised at how much we found ourselves loving the peace and quiet of this cottage village. Very few people were staying while we were there but enough people were around so that we felt safe and not completely isolated. You'll find this area to be miles and miles of beautiful scenery and not commercialized at all. After checking in we drove about 25 minutes to Harvey's grocery in Ridgeland. Ridgeland has fast food, family restaurants, drug stores, banks, etc if needed. There are very few places to stop for gas on these back roads so plan accordingly. April's cottage is adorable and the photos don't do it justice. It's very spacious, cozy and tastefully decorated with beautiful pieces of furniture. Everything is supplied so just take your food, clothes, and toiletries. The one thing I noticed when first entering the cottage was the fresh smell and how clean it was. No pet odor even though it is pet-friendly! Self-check in and check out was a breeze! April is just a phone call away if you need her. Each night we slept soundly because the beds were awesome and the AC ran great during the 100+ degree heat wave. The 3 ceiling fans on the back porch allowed us comfortable swinging time to watch the hummingbirds and marsh wildlife. There is a huge bookshelf loaded with all types of books for readers. My son caught a few fish in the pond and got to watch the small alligator float around. We also drove over to Beaufort and Port Royal (about 40-45 mins) on 2 days. Sands Beach in Port Royal has a nice sandy beach for swimming and the Henry Robinson Boardwalk is a fishing pier with a shaded area to sit and watch schools of dolphins. We found Beaufort's waterfront park very pet-friendly and a great place to have lunch and shop. Both day trips were great but it was also nice getting back to the quietness of Palm Key to nap and read. The only issue we had was with the Wifi but we knew from reviews that it was slow. It's a community wifi so it was extremely slow for us so we just used our Verizon hotspot which worked most of the time. No real problem with calls or texts. This also presented a great opportunity for us to unplug and decompress which we actually enjoyed. We arrived stressed out and left relaxed which worked out great. Highly recommend visiting Broadview Cottage. Thank you April making your cottage so inviting. Hope to return soon.

Beautiful View

Beautiful view of the marsh along the Broad River. Well situated for day trips to Hilton Head, Beaufort and Savannah. One of the most well appointed rentals we’ve ever stayed in. Had everything one might need for cooking or entertainment. Laundry was a big plus. If I had one thing that could have been improved, it would be the beds. Super firm. A mattress pad would be a great addition. But certainly not a deal breaker. We hope to go back soon!

Pleasant experience

As others have said, this cottage is well designed for a pleasant stay. The furnishings are comfortable, and the hosts have provided many signs and writings to help you decide easily what you would like to do and where to do it. I especially enjoyed just sitting on the porch and watching and listening to the birds and wildlife that live in and around the marsh. It is a very peaceful location.

About the host

Hosted by April Childress

Host profile image
April and Jody are educators and nature-lovers, pet-lovers, kayakers, travelers, neophyte birders, gardeners, caregivers, and husband and wife. In the mountains where we live full time, we generate our own power with solar panels and live off-the-grid, enjoy bluegrass music, art classes, and living in the woods. Our cat Jasper, whom we found on a rainy, cold day at a boat landing in the Lowcountry, loves traveling and road trips. He often visits Broadview with us.

We first came to Palm Key in 2004 to teach a workshop for Jasper County middle school teachers that was being held on site--and before we left that weekend, we knew we had to come back! We fell in love with the lowcountry, the marsh, and this community, which was founded to offer folks the opportunity to breathe fresh air, explore nature, create, learn, teach, and grow. Palm Key began to be a regular getaway for us, and we began learn about lowcountry marshes, blackwater swamps, and the rich history of the area. We’ve been charmed by the people we’ve met, the little towns we’ve visited, and the connections to the past, back to the early 1700's in some places. The more we learned and saw, the more we wanted to explore and know!

Why they chose this property

Then, in 2012, we had the opportunity to purchase our cottage and make ourselves and our families a second home here. Its location is delightful--we named the cottage Broadview because it overlooks the marshes of the Broad River, and the view itself is wide and open from our porch. We can sit in the swing with a cup of coffee and just enjoy the view. While the house is modest in size and outward appearance, it lent itself to making a comfortable home for us and our extended family. We've nested in it with family antiques and neat finds from local shops that reflect our interests.

We appreciate the open floor plan and the fact that the house is handicap-able and all on one level. That way we can enjoy it for many years to come. And we can see the marsh from everywhere in the house--we have views of the Broad River from our kitchen, dining area, living area, bedrooms, and porch. Lucy is quite at home here and frequently joins us when we come to stay a while.

We come here intermittently, just to hang out sometimes, or to work as kayak instructors for LifeTides Institute, a non-profit on site that hosts programs for the international educational organization Road Scholar. If you’re interested in learning about them, we teach Kayak the Lowcountry (#12440) and Kayak More of the Lowcountry (#21344), which you can find at roadscholar.org. Palm Key is the perfect place to host a group of folks interested in adventure, nature, and history, and we've met a lot of great people who have returned again and again!

What makes this property unique

The neighborhood is quiet, and welcoming, and lovely--folks here are used to seeing visitors and making them feel at home. Pets on leashes are welcomed by all. We enjoy the fact that there's no light pollution, so we see constellations and moonrises over the marsh. This sight alone is rare to city-dwellers!

It makes us happy to share our cottage. We've furnished it in an authentic way--it's not 'beachy-themed,' or 'vacation-property' feeling. It's got enough reading lights to see by, and really comfortable chairs that are a dream to sit in and pretty to look at. You can put your feet up and stay a while!

And we'd like to share it with you! We’ve hosted bridge-players, birders, families who are celebrating weddings, anniversaries, or graduation at Parris Island, honeymooners, caregivers, kayakers, veterans, all sorts of folks with all sorts of interests.

Here’s hoping that you can find what you’re looking for in your visit with us at Broadview Cottage, whether it be peace and quiet or a jumping-off place for lots of exploration.
