About this property

Country home in lovely Little Compton: stone walls, fields, woods, sky, beach

Family-friendly home on a peaceful, rural cul-de-sac, surrounded by nature—stone walls, pasture, woods, wildlife, sky—near the town Commons and beaches. Nicely landscaped property. Perfect for families and anyone seeking peace and quiet in a glorious natural setting. And...since Little Compton is the perfect place for reading, there's a small but eclectic (even eccentric) library in the house that guests are free to peruse—as long as the books stay in the house!

3 bedrooms, 2 baths on two floors. Deck off a fully-equipped kitchen. Mudroom and attached garage. Cable TV, WiFi, washer & dryer, dishwasher, wifi. Eclectic library. Outdoor shower for after-beach clean up. Walk to the town Commons and a quick trip to the beaches. Quaint, unassuming, easy, no-hassle summer living.

Little Compton is a rarity in the northeast—unspoiled, unaffected, easy-going living in a farming/summer community surrounded by water.

Guests will become reacquainted with the sky and light, clouds and the weather, the sound of wind and the feel of air. And birds.

Another great stay in Little Compton!

We loved our time at this property so much that we came back again this summer. This year, we especially enjoyed seeing the deer grazing behind the house, exploring Goosewing Preserve, and watching the sunset at Lloyd's beach. Once again, the house had everything we could possibly desire for cooking and relaxing with family.

Great location and property with both enjoyable outdoor and indoor living with enough space for 4 to 6 adults. Walkable to the town common with dinning options. Great area for riding a bike. Enjoyed out stay!

Idyllic Getaway

We had a wonderful time at this spacious, beautiful, well stocked home. Relaxing on the deck or hammocks provides a perfect view of a spectacular backyard garden. We also loved using the outdoor shower after daily explorations of local beaches and nature walks. This was a perfect spot for a week of relaxation!

perfect & comfortable for a family vacation

Not too far from the wonderful beaches of Little Compton and at the end of a quiet road, this house is large and very comfortable for two families with kids. The deck and outdoor shower are great; the gardens out back are beautiful and peaceful. If you are looking for a fancy rental, this might not be the place for you, but it was just right for our extended family--in fact, it felt like staying at a comfy family home. And one bonus is the incredible array of books...

Little Compton House

The house was very clean and well stocked. The best part was the back porch which was often in shade and usually breezy. The only thing I would have liked was a gas grill.

Rhode Island Getaway

We enjoyed our stay in Little Compton. John's house was clean and spacious, with a huge back yard for the dogs. All of the bedrooms have window AC units so that the summer heat is tamed. The bed was comfortable. The location is really good - a short drive to a lot of interesting places like Newport, Mystic and New Bedford. So it's a good central place to base out of to explore southern New England. There is also some very nice cycling in the area if you like that sort of thing.

Exactly What We Wanted!

Everything the ad says is accurate. The public beach is about 2 miles away, the property is at the end of a very quiet, private road, the yard is peaceful. We saw turkeys and deer. We heard a dozen different birds. The owner provides ample amounts of beach towels and kitchen supplies. We are definitely considering a return visit next summer if the dates work out!

Quiet location, spacious yard, clean & bright interior

The house is located at the end of a quiet lane. The backyard is large, nicely landscaped, and surrounded by stone walls with views of woods and a field. Very quiet and private! As a party of two, we spent all of our time on the first floor, which includes a bedroom, bathroom, living room, dining room and kitchen. The public areas are spacious and well laid out. The whole house was clean, neat and well supplied with essentials. It’s clear this is a well loved family home. The host was quick to respond to our questions and to provide essential information needed for our trip. He is local so we feel comfortable that he’d be available if any problems arose (none did). We highly recommend this property to those who enjoy a relaxing stay in a quiet woodsy locale.

Third stay is as much of a charm

This is the third straight year that we have rented this property from John and Mary, and we really enjoy it. Nice amenities as with kitchen; a deck, hammock, and quiet well-tended backyard in which to relax; and, if you rent when hottest, air-conditioning in the upstairs bedrooms. My wife likes to cook, and she has all she needs to work her magic. I appreciate the proximity to the Commons, and, if you like to bicycle, as I do, it is a good place to make a getaway, be it to Tiverton, Westport, Dartmouth, or “just” Sakonnet Point. There is a bike group that meets only a few hundred yards away at 7 am each day (warmer months) at corner of Long Pasture and Swamp Roads. Great spot.

We had a wonderful stay!

I've been coming to Little Compton each summer for my whole life, so I came at the visit from that perspective. There were many things we loved about the house: the big, well-equipped kitchen; the smart layout of the house; the deck and calming backyard; the overall quiet that came with being at the end of the road and out of the way; the central location; the big garage from which to launch your various "Little Compton activities; the fact that the house overall was well-equipped and everything was easy to find; the outdoor shower (a Sakonnet staple), etc. There was a really nice airiness to the house. Open a few windows, get a couple of fans going, and your all set. We gravitated to the deck, and spent a lot of time out there. Excellent. :)

October in Little Compton

My family and I were fortunate to spend time at this comfortable, lovely home. From the moment you enter the spacious and well supplied kitchen, you know that you will enjoy this home. The bedroom and full bathroom on the first floor are very convenient. Then there are two more very spacious bedrooms and another full bath on the second floor. The owners have made sure to include any and all items that you might need. The amenities are all there, as well, but the comfort and coziness of the home stands out the most! We had wonderful walks around the charming neighborhood and you are conveniently close to the Commons, the center of Little Compton. However, you probably will want to stay at this home and enjoy the deck and spacious backyard. The Owners were accommodating, helpful and very responsive. This is a Home to enjoy all the seasons in Little Compton!

The home was spacious and bright with a well stocked kitchen and all amenities. The location was convenient to everything and John ( the host) was available and responsive. We enjoyed relaxing on the deck and in the backyard. We had a wonderful week and enjoyed staying at this property. Would definitely rent again.

Lovely Little Compton

The home was exactly as advertised and away from the main road. This made it very quiet and safe for small children. It had a wonderful back yard and a constant breeze. The kitchen was well equipped and the house was very comfortable. It is a typical New England summer home, and we enjoyed our stay. Communication with the owner was seamless.

Quiet and Restoring

What a lovely home and setting! We visited in in the middle of June and it was just beautiful. Red Winged Blackbirds and wild Turkeys frequented the backyard, and we spent many mornings on the back deck. In turn, we relaxed the afternoons away reading in the shade or with walks to the Commons and trips to Sakonnet Point. Little Compton is quiet and calming, and this house is the perfect LC house. Will definitely return.

Mother's Day Weekend in Lovely Little Compton!

My Sisters, Daughters, Sister-in-Law, Niece and I try to spend Mother's Day Weekend together! This year we were Lucky enough to spend it at Little Compton in this comfortable Home! From the very beginning, the Owner was Helpful and Welcoming! You will find everything that you need in this very well outfitted Home, especially in the Kitchen! We spent time on the Deck enjoying the Pretty Backyard and enjoyed our meals in the Cozy dining room "catching up" on everyone's news! With a first floor bedroom and full bath and two spacious bedrooms and a full bath on the second floor, there is ample room for all! The location of the Home is great, too! It is not too far from the center of Little Compton, the Commons and it is not too far from South Shore Beach should you be inclined to grab your bike and go! You might also be tempted to sit and read a book from the Owner's Wonderful Collection! However, for sure, you will want to stay at this Cozy Home and enjoy each other's company in these Lovely surroundings! This Home is One to return to! Thank You!

Tranquility and Comfort

Before we even got to the property, we felt welcomed by John’s warm and informative emails. As soon as we parked in the driveway, we were won over by the charm of the house and its grounds; we knew immediately that we would experience the calm and tranquility we were looking for; a big welcome bouquet of flowers on the kitchen counter brought a smile to our faces. Throughout our week at the house the four of us (2 couples) felt how comfortable, well thought out, welcoming, spacious, homey this house is; we loved eating breakfast on the deck overlooking the trees and flowers, taking showers in the outdoor shower after a day at the beach (we chose Horseneck Beach, because of the warmth of the water), perusing through the many books scattered throughout the house (and reading a few), hanging out in the comfortable and homey living room (we didn't use the TV or DVD but they are there!), working a couple of hours a day at the dining room table (ample enough for 4 laptops!), cooking in the spacious kitchen and sleeping like babies in the huge bedrooms; we didn't even get to use all the other amenities, like the BBQ, golf equipment etc... Little Compton and the South Coast are beautiful and not obviously touristy. If you like quiet, beauty, comfort and simplicity this house and its surroundings are the perfect destination. It was for us. We will be back. Thank you John and Mary for sharing your family home.

About the host

Hosted by John Pitts

Host profile image
The house is owned by my three sisters and me, but I am the principal contact on VRBO. I am a book publishing professional living in New York City. My sisters live in Providence, Boston and Woodstock, VT. We grew up in Providence and summered in Little Compton. We all return to Little Compton year-round, especially in the summer. It's truly a rarity in the northeast: unspoiled, unaffected, easy going living in a farming/summer community surrounded by water.

Why they chose this property

Surrounded by stone walls, woods and pasture, the house is serene and private. Depending on the time of year, the property is visited by deer, coyote, fox, rabbits, skunks, raccoons, wild turkey, all sorts of songbirds, hawks, falcons, owls, and hummingbirds. You will become reacquainted with the sky and light, clouds and the weather, the sound of wind and the feel of air. Close to the town Commons and beaches.

What makes this property unique

Peace, tranquility, privacy, rural ease and simplicity, glorious climate, natural beauty, flora and fauna, history, good books.
