Lake Vista from every room.

The Casa Eclipse is on a lot set on the slopes above the Lake Patzcuaro. It is very rural and about a block from the paved road on a dead end trail. There is only one neighbor (he speaks English) and he is also very private. The house is a compact two bedrooms with the bath on the second level, with the bedrooms. The kitchen is fully equipped with a toaster oven and a microwave. The coffeemaker is a single serve like a Keurig, so bring some pods you like, they are not available in Mexico. There are mini supers in Tzintzuntzan that carry most essentials and several large supercenter stores in Patzcuaro. Patzcuaro also has good restaurants while the local offerings in Tzintzuntzan are pretty basic; grilled chicken, tacos, etc. The beds in the house are very comfortable and there is cable TV and a good wi-fi router with strong signal throughout the house and on the giant patio. The patio is great for just kicking back and watching the neighbor's cows and the vari-colored birds. It also has a grill for charcoal (available mesquite, cheap and good). The road to the house is not paved or well graded but the neighbor said the town will fix it in 2018, with streetlights. If you just take it slow, it is no problem and it keeps the amateurs out. In summary, it is a relaxing, cool and scenic house to use as a base to explore central Michoacan and experience the rich history of the area. The ruins of the prehispanic Tarascan central governing site overlook the church complex in Tzintzuntzan founded by Bishop Vasco Quiroga, where the olive trees are over 450 years old, oldest in the Americas.

Just perfect

It is second time we rented Casa Eclipse. And we could not have been happier, the house was perfectly clean, everything was ready for us and our short vacation. The owner Joe is fantastic and a goes beyond possible to meet our needs. Location and views are amazing, I walked the village , enjoyed a couple of hours peace and zen at the monastery and the oldest Olive Garden in the state. We will definitely be back and I almost hate recommending this house to others because it might not now be available on the dates we want it.

Great smaller town near Patzcuaro

A nice sweet little home on the edge of town: a longish walk to the main part of Tzintzunzan but only a short drive. It's worth noting that the road up to the house practically requires a 4-wheel drive, so I'd suggest inquiring about the condition. Aside from the internet not working and a persistent smell of cat spray in the downstairs living room, it worked out pretty ideal for us as a base to explore the nearby places. It has a lovely patio with a view out to Lago Patzcuaro and is very rural. The owner was very easy to work with.

Vacation at Eclipse House

Eclipse House was very comfortable. The home was well stocked for cooking, the view was amazing and the large patio was lovely to enjoy the local wildlife and lake view. The bedrooms were nice, an excellent bathroom. The location was a bit isolated, but no problem if you have a car rental. The property was kept clean, well maintained and the property manager was most helpful. Owner provided excellent customer service and information given was accurate, except for the internet service that was expensive to use with an air card. The local town had 3 public internet places for 5-10 pesos per hour. Owner will be installing laundry facilities which will be very nice. Pull out couch worked well, so house could sleep 6 comfortably. Attractions: ruins & market in Tzinztunztin, Patzuaro: (20 minutes away by vehicle) market (excellent), plaza shops were great, Once Patios, Cathedral - all worth seeing. Janitizo Island - excellent (20 minute boat ride from Patzuaro embarcadaro) had great shoppings and view from the top of the hill in the statue. Quirgo - nice town with good shopping and plaza. Morelia (1 hour) excellent cathedral, plaza and aquaduct. Santa Clara del Cobre - wonderful copperwares, well worth seeing. (45 minutes)

A piece of Paradise, far from the maddening crowd…

Located at the western edge of town (Tzintzuntzan, Michoacan del Campo) just after the paved road becomes dirt, this delightful two-story house sits on the hillside, surrounded by cornfields and pastures. The huge terrace, overlooking the north end of Lake Pátzcuaro with an ever-changing view of the mountains, instills peace and tranquility. The house is equiped with everything one could possible need: from bed & bath linens, to a fully equipped kitchen with pots & pans, plates, bowls, cups, coffee maker, etc (even a TV, which I never turned on once in the month that I was there. The radio was enough of a connection, with good stations.) Ideal for a retreat get-away, especially if you have a project that needs attention, focus, and few distractions (such as a writing project). The property is surrounded by stunning views, which would inspire any artist or naturalist (with an abundance of birds from dawn to dusk, and butterflies, so binoculars really are a must). Although out of the way (which in my book is not a bad thing), it is just a short walk into town, and, if need be, the bustling cities of Quiroga and Pátzcuaro are within a half hour-45 minute drive. The big city of Morelia is about a two hour drive. Eclipse House is perfectly situated for day trips around the lake, and to spots further beyond. For two people it was just right, but four would be comfortable, I'm sure. I don’t think that there is a better shower in all of Mexico! I definately am considering returning - as soon as possible. I could not imagine not having a car, for freedom & convenience sake (driving is more laid-back around the lake then in most parts of Mexico), and since the flights usually arrive late and depart early, one can be rented for a modest amount at the airport (and the Morelia Airport Hotel is a stones throw from the terminals, with an exceptionally amiable staff, and good restaurant - Mr Muu – which makes coming & going quite simple). People seem to be overly concerned and afraid of the dangers that they read about in Mexico in the papers or hear on the news. Not once in a month’s time was I ever concerned for my safety or well being. The food is delicious, the people are kind, the history, culture and celebrations in this part of the country are amazing, The owners of Eclipse House have been very generous in making this spot available and giving people the opportunity to explore this area of Michoacan.

About the host

Hosted by Joe Lazaro

Host profile image
This property was purchased 12 years ago by owners Joe and Martha Lazaro upon their retirement - Martha as an elementary teacher and Joe as an Industrial Engineer, both living in the Los Angeles, California area. The cottage acquired was a very basic building that had lots of potential for re-modeling to live and enjoy the tranquility of the semi-rural location just outside the town limits of Tzintzuntzan and a breath-taking view of the Lake Patzcuaro. Our aim was to live 6 months here, 6 months back home in Los Angeles. We would then visit during Martha's Spring and Winter school breaks until we could retire. In the first 3 years we had the cottage extensively remodeled, installing modern bathrooms with pressurized water for abundant gas tank, laundry appliances and a terrace to relax and dine al fresco. At the advise of the Real Estate agent that looked after or property while we were away, we were persuaded to list our cottage as a vacation rental, as this area is visited by travelers from around the world, for the many natural and cultural events throughout the year (Day of the Dead celebration comes to mind, nearby winter home of monarch butterflies). So much more.
