Beautiful location but overall underwhelmed

Our family was excited about our stay at this property, as we are very familiar with the area. One the most enticing aspects of this rental was access to the kayaks which were listed as an amenity in the original posting. As our vacation approached, I reviewed the listing details & noticed details had changed, including the removal of kayaks. I reached out to see if they if they were still available and it was only then that it was disclosed they are no longer in the rental. This was disappointing & would have preferred the owner be upfront about change. That said, we were willing to roll with it. When we arrived at the home, the location was indeed beautiful & remote, just what we were hoping for. However, it became clear that the house is in need of attention & repairs. For instance, the front steps into the front door feel as though they are rotting & sagging. Same condition for the steps down to the water front; insecure to walk on. Listed in the amenities was a 'spa tub' which turned out to be a standard bathtub/shower combo, there was no wi-fi (which is totally fine) but the listing refers to a strong cell signal which was unfortunately not our experience (and I only list this, as this could be a safety issue). There is a dehumidifier that is set to maintain 50% humidity, but unfortunately never ran & showed a humidity of 85%.

Loved Maine

We loved Maine. It was the first time many of us had been there. The check in and out were easy and stress free. The host communicated well. The bay tides were amazing!! With high tide happening at 6 am and 6 pm we did not have many opportunities to use the boats because we were often sleeping or out exploring at Bar Harbor which was an hour by ferry or by car. We had fun exploring Acadia park that was on the peninsula too. No curtains did make for an interesting experience with the sun rising by 4 am. While no neighbors could peak in, curtains for privacy and sleep would have been nice. The basement bedroom was musty and not cleaned well. I would not recommend it for anyone with allergies. The drive from the main road to the house took another 10 minutes at least. If you are looking for remote, this is the place to be. Hope this is helpful to you!

Misleading

The seclusion of the house was nice and we determined to enjoy our vacation despite being misled on this rental. When we made the reservation we made it for the days we wanted to be in the area which happened to be Thursday to Thursday, not Saturday to Saturday. The reservation went through as did the payment then later we received an email asking us to change our reservation to Saturday to Saturday. We didn’t respond because I was in the hospital and by the time I was home we had received an email stating they are cancelling the reservation. If your site lets us make the reservation and processes the payment, you should have to honor that. We dealt with it and moved on. The worst part was how the Map section of their page states it is 11.2 miles to Bar Harbor Whale Watching, and therefore 11.2 miles to Bar Harbor. This is NOT the case. (unless maybe by boat) It is 70 miles from this house to Bar Harbor. Another thing – we have rented many houses all over the east coast in the past and NEVER was it stated we should take our trash with us when we leave. You clean up and put the trash in the large bins to be removed on the next trash day. We’ve seen trash already in bins upon check-in and never gave it a thought – why would you expect your travelling clients to take garbage with them?? We are paying to use the rental and that includes garbage service. Nowhere does it state anything about the garbage until after you make the reservations. Do not book unless you do not mind the owners making changes and adding rules after you make the reservation. We would NOT book with them again.

A wonderful get away if your looking for peace and quiet and nature. Perfect for our family of 10!

The owner was very available. Entrance to the house was easy. Relaxation and use of Kayaks are the main features of this property. And of course, the night sky was breathtaking. The little harbor towns are quaint but the best find was the Wharf Gallery & Grill in Corea!! Best Lobster Grilled Cheese Sandwiches!! Actually, everything they offered was good. And access to Schoodic Park of Acadia National Park so great!! Only minutes away!! Made some lifetime memories here for my family of 10.

Wonderful place

Our stay was wonderful, way off the beaten path , secluded with perfect location. Only flaw was the beds were uncomfortable with plywood instead of boxsprings but still OK. Everything else was perfect. Thank you.

Tranquility and incredible beauty

If you are seeking tranquility, serene beauty, and the chance to really unplug and focus on connect with your travel companions, this is a perfect choice for you. Large unobstructed windows and an expansive deck offer incredible views of the ever changing bay. The home is secluded in quiet woods in a lovely area for walking or biking, and wildlife is abundant. There is plenty of everything needed for your stay, and you are an easy, beautiful drive from Schoodic Point and villages like Prospect Harbor and Winter Harbor. The owner was very accessible, and made numerous resources available that helped us plan activities. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and hope to return soon. .

Beautiful Views

The property was a light filled, fairly secluded house on the bay. It was away from the Acadia crowds, but close enough that we were able to tour the park every day. My kids enjoyed going out on the kayaks included with the property several times and loved exploring on the shore of the bay at low tide. My three teenagers, and my youngest all had a place of their own in the house for downtime. We were nervous with no WiFi, but cell service was great in the house. Once you leave the house, it is a good 5-10 min before you get good reception again, so definitely write down directions before heading out for the day... Overall a charming home In a wooded area with breathtaking sunrises/views and don’t miss checking out the night skies on the deck!

Great spot to explore Schoodic and Acadia

We had a great time exploring Acadia from this bayfront property. Very private and secluded with easy access to Schoodic area and about an hour drive to the main part of Acadia. Great kayaking at high tide. Easily accommodates large groups. Great communication with property manager. In terms of the cons, cookware and linens need a refresh, and no windows had blinds—I enjoyed waking with the sun (beautiful sunrises), but if you’re looking to sleep in, bring a sleeping mask. With a few minor upgrades, I would rate 5 across the board. This exceeded my expectations for the price—if you want all of the amenities without the cons, expect to pay more. Great trip!

Quite and peaceful but

First and foremost we were very grateful that this property was available on such short notice. This is the 3 rd house we have rented from the HomeAway site. If your looking for peaceful and quite this is the place for you. Make sure you realize you are on the bay side of the ocean and the tide will affect your stay if you love the water. The house itself was ok. The basement has a huge moisture problem and the dehumidifer does not take the musty smell away. The house lacks a homey feeling. No curtains in any of the rooms or shades. The afternoon sun makes the bedrooms really warm. Very few decorations. The ceiling fans were a life saver because there is no AC. in the middle of the day with the sunshine it was warm in the house. There is diffently not enough towels for 14 people. We only had 10 people and we washed towels everyday. The kitchen is lacking for sure. The pots and pans are super old. Make sure your bring want you need right down to salt and pepper. There is no outdoor grill. We did buy one and left it there hoping that future tenants could use it. The beds, all of them are old and squeaky. The springs are coming right through most them. It was somewhat clean but nowhere near to our liking. Dirt along the tub/floor. Ceiling fans were completely dusty and the stand in the living room with the games on it hasn’t been dusted in a very very long time, the cobwebs were dangling under it. The owner was very responsive to any email or text I sent and for that I am truly greatful but I believe this is a new listing to home away and there’s a lot to be learned as a rental. The lot is great and we did enjoy ourselves. We were on vacation so we made it work.

About the host

We built this home in 2006 when we fell in love with the land. It has been only ever a second home for us, and lately, we can not get up very often as we live in Philadelphia. I am a professor at a large university in the city with 6 kids who grew up loving these vacations but are now late teens/early twenties and not as interested.

Why they chose this property

The land and air and sea are intoxicating! The smell of the pine and sea, the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore, this house and land are complete serenity. If you are looking for a solid nature retread, this house is for you. The house is beautiful and spacious, almost every window overlooks the water.

What makes this property unique

You would be hard-pressed to find a more serene and peaceful getaway on the water and five acres of wooded land. Situated near the Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia National Park, and nestled in among quaint Maine seaport villages, this is a property that will still your heart.
