About this property

Traditional Asturian village house in tranquil location

La Rondita is a fully-equipped holiday home suitable for families, groups or independent travellers, situated at the edge of a traditional Asturian village, close to local facilities and many outdoor activities. Located in the foothills of the Sierra del Sueve, La Rondita is equally close to the Picos de Europa National Park and the Costa Verde's fishing villages and beaches.

Because of this location, La Rondita is ideal for either an active holiday or a relaxing break. To view the house details, please see below.

If walking is your passion, La Rondita offers a number of walks both long and short that can be undertaken directly from the house without needing to drive, plus others that are slightly further afield both in the mountains or on the coast.

Fuentes, where La Rondita is located, has a train station on the narrow gauge FEVE railway, linking between Santander and Oviedo.

This coastline is also known as the Jurassic Coast and there many beaches offering actual dinosaur footprints, plus a visit to the Jurassic Museum of Asturias (MUJA) is a must for any dinosaur enthusiast.

Lunch is an essential part of Spanish life and stopping at one of the many Mesones (Inns) or Sidrerias (cider houses) in the area to try the amazing value Menu del Dia (set meal of the day - 3 courses with choices) is highly recommended. Also, La Rondita is fortunate to be located extremely close to 3 of the 4 Michelin -starred restaurants in Asturias: Casa Marcial (2 stars), El Corral del Indianu (1 star) and Arbidal (1 star). Gastronomy is a key feature of this area.

Recommended local places to visit:
1. Ribadesella - pretty, nearby coastal town with fishing port and beach.
2. Cangas de Onis - gateway to the Picos de Europa, popular tourist town, weekly Farmers Market.
3. Covadonga - religious shrine dedicated to Our Lady set in a grotto in the Picos de Europa, incredible mountainside Basilica plus also spectacular natural lakes set up in the mountains - great for walking!
4. Picu Pienzu - our local 'biggie'..this mountain is 1268m tall and offers breathtaking views across the Sierra del Sueve in the directions of both the Picos and the coast.
5. The Cares Gorge (the classic Picos walk).
6. Incredible beaches, both wide and open (fantastic for surfing) or small and cove-like (good for sheltered swimming and rock-pooling).
7. Oviedo, the capital of Asturias is 45 minutes drive away, small, clean and full of culture, curiosities and shopping!

Interesting fiestas to witness:
1. El Bollu (pronounced bo-yu) - in July celebrates the local chorizo bun!! Local music (bagpipes), traditional costumes, parades, and lots of cider.
2. El Descenso del Sella - the annual canoe race down the River Sella between Arriondas and Ribadesella on the coast, which occurs at the beginning of August. A truly international event, with competitors from many different countries. Worth seeing, both for the party and parades before and the incredible fiesta spirit that absorbs the town for these 24 hours.
3. Amagüestu - the annual fiesta to celebrate the chestnut harvest at the beginning of November. Live music, a traditional food and craft market selling local honey, chestnuts and chestnut products, jewellery, baked goods, freshly-pressed apple juice from the new harvest and many hand-crafted local items.
4. La Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos - every 5th January, Arriondas hosts a parade through the town at night, welcoming the Three Kings who will deliver presents to lucky children the following morning (Epiphany!)

A Wonderful Holiday!

We have recently spent a wonderful two weeks staying at La Rondita. I had spotted La Rondita about 5 years ago and knew it was somewhere I wanted to bring my husband and two teenage daughters one day. It was certainly worth the wait and exceeded my expectations. The house is in a small village (Fuentes) but only a 10 minute drive from Arriondas which is quite a sizeable town with supermarkets; restaurants; bars, shops, chemist, hospital etc. The house was very clean, comfortable and well-equipped. The owners (Sara and Bill who live opposite) were very helpful and gave us lots of tips and information. This is not something we have experienced in our previous holidays to Asturias and really enhanced our holiday and gave it a very personal touch. The area really has something for everyone. We enjoyed some very scenic walks in the mountains and some relaxing days on the glorious beaches of which there are many (Cueves del Mar was our favourite). We spent a day in Oviedo (1 hours drive) sight-seeing and shopping. We all enjoyed canoeing down the River Sella and were lucky enough to be there for the International Canoe Festival which was quite a spectacle. All in all it was a wonderful holiday and I can thoroughly recommend La Rondita and the area. Thank you Sara and Bill for everything.

Peaceful rural location

This was our first visit to the Asturias region of northern Spain and we would definitely visit again. La Rondita was a rustic delight, with everything that we needed for our stay. Many thanks to our host who gave us lots of useful tips to help us enjoy our stay.

8 Days on Spains Green coast

Fuentes is ideally situated to visit both the mountains of the Picos and the beaches on the nearby coast too. We made excursions every day visiting rivers, beaches, caves, stunning mountain viewpoints and even a dinosaur museum- which the kids loved. La Rondita was fantastic - relaxing and quiet , we particularly enjoyed sitting in the garden and soaking up the sun late afternoon after a busy day exploring the area. We were outside every evening eating in the garden too. Sara was a excellent in helping us with everything and a very welcoming host. It was nice to have an owner nearby which added a particularly personal touch to our week. Having used vrbo a lot many of our other rentals didn't have this. Can't recommend La Rondita or the Arriondas area enough. We will return and, as our two girls get bigger, explore more of the high Picos de Europa.

Peaceful setting in a pretty hamlet

We have just returned from a two week holiday at this delightful house nestled in the Asturian countryside. Sara and Bill are excellent hosts, even staying up to greet us when we arrived after midnight. They are really helpful and available, without being too ‘present’. Sara recommended a local restaurant, La Posada de Antrialgo, which caters for vegans and even booked the table for us. The 6 course meal was exceptional! There’s lots of information about the area in the house folder which proved really helpful too. The house is clean, comfortable, well equipped and very peaceful. We loved sitting in the garden listening to the birds and watching the very friendly robin who perches right next to you waiting for a few crumbs. We really enjoyed hiking in the Picos de Europa and also the closer peaks which you can tackle directly from La Rondita. Our favourite day was hiking to the Refugio Vega de Ario from the lakes at Covadonga (the road up to the lakes closes at 8am so if you want to avoid having to get the bus up be prepared for an early start). The views are spectacular. The Cares Gorge hike is also an excellent day out if you don’t suffer from vertigo! There is a great choice of quiet sandy beaches within a 30-40 minute drive, and don’t forget to visit the Bufones de Pría (blow holes) when the tide is in. The river Sella is only a 5 minute walk from the house and is a perfect place for swimming or you can hire kayaks from nearby Arriondas. We had a wonderful experience and have no hesitation recommending La Rondita. Thank you Sara & Bill for everything

Wonderful holiday in the Asturias countryside...

We had a fantastic 7 days staying at La Ronda. The owner was very helpful and made us feel very welcome. There was loads of information about the area at the accommodation, most hand written, by the owner. Asturias (district) was super and offered lots of mountain activities, including walks and river swims, whilst still being close enough to the beach, for trips. Loved the local food, the cider! and the peace; This is a quite spot to stay. Stunning views... beautiful countryside... nice people. We will be back and hopefully saying at La Rondita again, one day!

A lovely practical property in a beautiful location, with very helpful hosts. Well positioned to enjoy the mountains and the coast. In a quiet, quaint hamlet but only 5 minutes drive from Arriondas, with its multitude of services.

Short & Sweet

We had a lovely 5 days at Fuentes and could so easily have spent more time here as there is so much to do. The house is in a small hamlet tucked away in beautiful scenery and is a perfect base for exploring the nearby coast and mountains. However, there are also a number of great walks on your doorstep if you do not want to go too far afield and we took advantage of this walking to one of the local villages on one day and tackling Pico Moro on another. The house is cosy with everything you would need and it has a lovely garden to sit out and relax or to take advantage of the BBQ. Sara looked after us from the moment we arrived greeting us with a very tasty Lemon drizzle cake and making sure we were settled in. She was always available if we needed her (but also very discreet), very helpful, booking restaurants and advising us on what to do in and around the area. Although in a small hamlet there are still two restaurants close by that you can easily walk to. The closest; El Llosu (with bar) is just across the river meaning you have to go via the 'Wobbly Bridge' and we went on our first night. We had a great meal, we were a little bit concerned as there was no menu but the chef looked after us and treated us to a number of Asturias specialities that we all thoroughly enjoyed. One of the big advantages of the location is the small train station at Fuentes, this means if you want to leave your car parked up you can still get about. We used it to go to Arriondas on one of the evenings (taxi back, very reasonable) and we also used it to have a good day out at Oviedo. You could also use it to get your beach fix if you wanted to go to Ribadesella or Llanes. The Picos de Europa did not disappoint and we had a day trip up to the lakes at Corvadonga. Plenty of walks to choose from depending on how little or far you want to go and the scenery is superb. I should also mention that we spent the last two days of our holiday at Ribadesella and this was the perfect way to finish off. Beautiful coastal scenery in a charming town with plenty of bars and restaurants. I have no hesitation recommending this property, we had a fantastic 5 days and would love to have spent longer. For us it ticked the boxes, tucked away in a quiet, attractive hamlet and set in a lovely scenic area but with still so much to do, with or without the car. Thank you to Sara for looking after us and for providing such a cosy home.

Peaceful, comfortable, great for families

La Rondita is in an ideal location for the Picos de Europa, and the beaches of North Eastern Spain. The house is very well equipped with comfortable beds and was easily large enough for our family of 2 adults and 3 teenage girls. Bill and Sara are excellent hosts, providing local knowledge and advice for the huge range of activities that are possible to do. We particularly enjoyed the variety of walks, both from the house and within a relatively short drive. The Cares Gorge is an excellent day out, we took the bus to Cain and walked down to Poncebos where we were able to get another bus back. The beaches nearby are excellent being quiet, mainly sandy and popular with the locals. We stayed for two weeks had an excellent time and there were still a number of activities that we could have done if we had wanted to. We highly recommend this beautiful house.

Beautiful place near the Picos de Europa

La Rondita was exactly what we were looking for in our first stop of a month long trip to Spain. The narrow roads surprised and delighted us. The house is large and clean and in a spectacular setting. We immediately felt we were getting a taste of what it would be like to live in the area which is what we were looking for. Bill and Sara are lovely hosts and made us feel welcome and immediately comfortable. They had great suggestions for us and we found their library of books about the area indispensible. We had easy access to the mountains and to the beaches and we loved every minute of our trip to this beautiful place!

A superb location and fantastic owners.

The house is situated in a small hamlet within easy walk of the river. Next to a spring, the calming sound of the water adds to the peaceful atmosphere of the house. There are wonderful views from all the windows which constantly remind you you are on holiday. This was our third visit to this house and this is largely because of the very friendly and helpful owners who moved there from the UK over a decade ago. The facilities in the house are just what you need, the dishwasher is a welcomed addition since our first stay. There is loads to do in the area from canoeing, beaches, walking, surfing, birdwatching to just reading a book. We will be going back.

Idyllic setting, wonderful stay

Our stay in Asturias was a real highlight of our time in Spain, and La Rondita was a wonderful base for us. The house was clean and spacious, with a lovely private outdoor garden area. Sara is a wonderful hostess, and not only left us a welcome basket, but also a book full of suggestions for things to see and do in the area. We strongly recommend that you follow her suggestions for local restaurants -- crossing the footbridge and walking through the beautiful Asturian countryside to a huge and delicious lunch in the valley was a particular highlight of our trip. The local walks are stunning but be sure to take a walking stick (lots of working farms in the area, so you may well encounter goats or cattle). And while it would be tempting to just settle in and enjoy the local settings, La Rondita is also within easy distance of other incredible attractions, such as the Picos de Europa. All in all, this was an idyllic week in a beautiful rural area, and we're already planning our next trip to Northern Spain.

Perfect to get to the beaches and the mountains

We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely house! We stayed there for one week during August. The house has everything we wished: it is quiet, spacious, clean, well equipped, and of course very comfortable! Especially, we enjoyed our meals in the garden with a wonderful view of the area! Sara was a great host giving us a warm welcome and having great suggestions for getting around! Also, the written information she prepared for her guests were extremely helpful! For our two girls the little kittens were the highlight of the holidays! We do hope to come back to Asturia within the next years, and we would love to stay in Sara´s house again! Of course we highly recommend it to other guests!

Beautiful & convenient location, excellent hosts

The location is beautiful with fine views from the peaceful garden in which we enjoyed relaxing. Arriondas is great location, about 20km on a good road from the coast with fine beaches and stunning coastal walks. You're also right next to the Picos de Europa with lovely mountain scenery and walks: about an hours drive from the start of the Cares Gorge walk. The 17Km canoe trip down the river Sella which runs past the property was great fun. Sara and Bill are excellent hosts offering great advice and where happy to book local restaurants. Two weeks went very quickly, we certainly didn't feel like we were running out of things to do.

Peaceful, central, clean and comfortable

The location of this quiet, clean, comfortable and clean farmhouse was just what we were looking for in wanting to be surrounded by country and not city. Great walks, farm animals and orchards were nearby as well as the small town of Les Arriondas that had decent restaurants when we didn't make anything at La Rondita. When we were ready, the location was a perfect starting point to get to Picos de Europa for hiking, any of the many coastal towns including Ribedesella which is the site where you can visit the Tito Bustillo cave system and points further afield such as Gijon or Oviedo to the west and Santander or Bilbao to the east. Throughout it all Sara was always available and a super help to help get us oriented. She was a perfect host. This place is highly recommended in our view.

Quiet and peaceful location

Our family (2 adults and 2 children (7&12 years old)) spent 10 days at La Rondita. The place is very quiet and peaceful. We liked location as we were making day trips to the sea and mountains and La Rondita is in the middle. We recommend La Rondita for people who are ready to make day trips on the car (sometimes long enough) but prefer to come back for silence for the night. Regards to Sara and Bill.

Beautiful house in the Asturian countryside

A week was not long enough to enjoy everything there was to do and see on this holiday! Rondita is perfectly placed between mountains and sea. The weather was beautiful for our week and we visited three different lovely sandy beaches. We also took a cable car up the Picos de Europa where there was still some snow on the ground. We got lovely views from the top of the world over all the surrounding peaks. The village Rondita is in is very small with lovely old Asturian buildings and the house itself is perfect. The very best things about Rondita were the views from all the windows, the lovely garden to sit out in, the birdsong and swimming in the river (5 mins from the house) at the end of the day before enjoying a nice cold beer in the garden! Sara (the owner) was so helpful with advice and recommendations. We would love to come back!

Home from home

This was our second stay at la Rondita and it won't be our last! A charming village, an excellent location (between the coast and the mountains) and an absolutely lovely place to stay. The house was very clean, well-equipped and we had plenty of room (a bonus when you have two small boys!). The garden was a lovely place to sit and take in the view. The welcome pack with information about the region was excellent and Sara and Bill were always willing to add their personal recommendations which were always spot on! They really were exceptionally helpful and welcoming, making sure we had everything we needed (including lots of thoughtful extras such as toys and books for the children). A wonderful holiday!

Fantastic escape in breathtaking location

Recently returned from La Rondita after a superb week of peace, rest and adventure in beautiful Asturias. The house is extremely comfortable, private and exceptionally clean. Evening drinks or morning coffee on the terrace can't be beaten; the views! The owners, Bill and Sara, live nearby and were so helpful in helping us organise ourselves. They really know the area and the locals, plus they gave us lots of tips to make the most of seeing the coast (dramatic beaches and charming fishing villages) and the Picos de Europa and nearby mountains (left info in the house for a lot of local walks which were all stunning). The village has a train station; really recommend the afternoon visit to Cuevas – spectacular local cave with bar next to station. This place is so beautiful; green, lush and quiet. On so many of the walks, we hardly saw a soul. Really recommend the local restaurant, El Llosu; the "parrillada" (barbecued meat) is incredible, plus the "fabada" (bean stew) at El Meson is divine. We'll be back and will tell all our friends and family all about it. Thank you La Rondita!!

We had a wonderful time here. The house is very clean, well equipped and comfortable. We particularly appreciated the wealth of information and suggestions for things to do. And there is loads to do including walks from the house and travel on the local trains. We liked being within easy reach of a very beautiful coastline, amazing mountains, fascinating towns and incredible view points. About the host

Hosted by Mrs Sara Aubrey

Host profile image
We came to live in Asturias in 2005 when our two girls were very young. We chose Asturias for its unique, authentic culture, being the part of Northern Spain where the Spanish holiday to escape from the heat of the rest of Spain. Parts of this region are like time and nature have stood still, so rich and real is its landscape and way of life. The open land, fields full of cows grazing, miles of orchards, four clear seasons with a milder climate than the UK.
We live and work in the house opposite La Rondita so we are always around to help with questions and give advice. We have a small collection of animals (sheep and chickens), we grow some of our food and hope to grown even more over the coming years in this fertile and unspoilt land.
Our lives have changed dramatically since coming here, for the better as we have new jobs, our Spanish has improved dramatically (and our children of course speak it better than ourselves), we have friends and have learnt that life doesn't always have to be frantic, a slower pace still gets the job done, especially if you take time to eat and drink well along the way as the locals definitely do.

Why they chose this property

We came here on holiday in 2004 for the first time, as a family. We were here for two weeks in Spring and it rained a lot. But we were enchanted and captivated by its lush, natural beauty. We had already decided to move from the UK and realised we had found what we were looking for here. After hunting for what seemed like an age and viewing so many other properties (some real wrecks, full of natural 'character'), we finally managed to find two houses for sale, separate yet close by, one for us and one as a rental. Plenty of land for growing fruit and veg, animals and adventures! Close by to a local town, where our children could go to school, located in a traditional village alongside the River Sella. Very curious neighbours who were overjoyed to see that we had brought children to live in the village! Several years on and the entailing peace, beauty and tranquillity still convince that we chose well!!

What makes this property unique

When we first visited Fuentes (the village where we live), we knew it was perfect because is is located near both the coast and the Picos de Europa National Park - La Rondita is equidistant!
It is a five minute walk from the River Sella, where we have our own river beach, perfect for an end of day swim or even a trip to the beach without the car!
La Rondita is very private, set down a lane, completely detached and with its own private garden, overlooking our orchard.
The house is very comfortable; we have tried to give it a 'home away from home' feel and it has a garden terrace with fantastic mountain views, a fully equipped kitchen.
From the house various mountain and forest walks are possible, you can walk to a bar and two restaurants plus we have a train station in the village for trips to the coast or cities without the car.
The location is not too isolated, quiet and peaceful yet only 5 km (8 minutes by car), from the nearest town with supermarkets, doctors and hospital, many great restaurants and bars, even a couple of Michelin starred eateries. Airports and ports and also close by.
