All well behaved pets are welcome at Birchwood! Small pet fee is extra. We do ask that they remain leashed at all times while on our property. Please pick up after your pets indoors and outdoors. We prefer that they remain downstairs if staying in the Lodge and off the beds/furniture in all units (as to help keep allergens to a minimum).
Due to NYS Department of Health regulations, dogs are not allowed at the beach, in the designated swim area. We do however, have plenty of lakefront shoreline for dogs to enjoy, docks to jump from and some shallow exit areas as well. If you are using Birchwood as a base for a day trip, we ask that you take your pet with you. If that's not possible, we'd be more than happy to recommend a local "pet day care". Leaving your pet behind without supervision is not permitted. We don't want them to be frightened or rowdy while you're away -- after all they should enjoy vacation as well.
Additional cottages available on property for the extended family that wants their own space at additional cost. Rec Room is open to all Birchwood guests.

You must provide email address for forwarding of lock box access code, beach waiver, etc. Off VRBO communication is automated and limited. Every reservation requires acknowledgement of receiving and reviewing the Property Rules and Terms of Service.

Much needed getaway

Cozy cottage!! Definitly a place to relax and rest! Very clean with almost everything you need to cook inside or out. I love to cook on an open fire! This cottage even had a grate to go over the fire, even though we didn't find it until our last night there... lol.

Cozy, clean cabins in an incredible setting!

Birchwood Cottages is in a magical setting, located on the quaint Loon Lake. You are surrounded by adventures and hiking opportunities, we spent our days exploring the area, out on the lake, soaking in the sun and bird watching. The true gem of the property were the people we met along the way including Erica and Gene, the amazing care takers! They were gracious and welcoming in providing information about the area and making us feel right at home. The property owners were also prompt in communication and accommodating. Highly recommend this rental and hope to return soon!

Nice stay

We had a very nice time in this cabin. It was very clean and cozy, with lots of sleeping space. Loved the screened porch! Could not use the stovetop - catch pans were rusted through and smelly when on, not safe. Please replace! Also, no cutting board in the kitchen. Wifi was non-existent despite place being listed to provide wifi. Other than that, all according to expectations and description by managers.

Beautiful lake views, enchanting escape from reality

Beautiful lake views, enchanting escape from reality. The neighborhood made up of cabins and the lodge were enchanting and beautiful. We stayed in cabin 6, right near the lake. It was beautiful and peaceful to wake up to the lake views. The only downsides were the sticky kitchen table when we arrived, as well as the low water pressure in the shower.

Lake Loon Stay

The cottage was very clean and met our every expectation. Was the first time we took our labs to sleep other than our own home and they loved every second there. Caretakers were awesome as were the property managers responding to our questions. Highly, highly recommended. We’ll be back!!!*****

Excellent Place to Lose Track of Time

As a final vacation before starting the school year, we spent several days in Cottage #6 and LOVED it. Prior to our arrival, Pat and Margo were communicative and helpful hosts. When we arrived, the Cottage was clean and had everything we needed to relax. Our favorite aspect was the location within the ADK; we were able to explore various corners of the park without having to relocate. Loon Lake was perfect for canoeing and swimming. I'm pretty sure our kids and dog could have spent the entire vacation on the beach. Memorable way to end Summer 2020.

Exactly what we needed.

We had a great relaxing weekend. We enjoyed a local hike as well as the Stone Bridge and Caves. I made a mistake and forgot to add my dog to our reservation and we had it figured out within one hour. Will definitely stay again this summer. Andy and Amber

We so enjoyed staying at the cabin and the privacy

Great stay but we were so disapointed with the recreation room, it is so run down and all the accessorys are missing no darts, broken pool sticks, no ping pong balls and not one good paddle so needs upgrading the beach area and toys were great. Having care takers on the grounds was a blessing erika and gene were so informative, helpful and delightful looking forward to returning soon

Everything We Wanted

This vacation was planned as our final "family" vacation before my children move to the next phases of their lives (marriage, job opportunity in Europe, & college). Lakeview at Birchwood Cottages provided the perfect opportunity for that to happen. The cottage was clean and ready for us when we arrived and check-in was easy through a key box on the porch. The appliances were easy to use and the refrigerator kept everything ice cold. A neat extra touch was that the doors on the fridge were painted with chalkboard paint which allowed us to leave messages for each other when we went off on our own adventures. The master bedroom was roomy with plenty of closet space and extra room for our suitcases. The other bedroom worked just fine for two of my sons, all they really did in there was sleep at night or take an occasional nap. My third son slept on the bed which is on the screened front porch and honestly, I was a little jealous, because he had the coolest place to sleep when a few of the nights got a little muggy. The trundle bed in the living room wasn't used used to sleep, it was used more as gathering place for gear and other odds and ends. The bathroom served its purpose, but the shower is only a stall shower and close to the sink, which for someone with a bit of a belly like me, made it a bit of tight squeeze getting in and out. It wasn't a big deal, just had to "suck it in" a little to get in. The water pressure wasn't great, but it did it's job, which was what we needed it to do. The area outside the cottage was nice and clean with a picnic table, where we ate and played dominoes each night, a charcoal grill, and a fire pit. There were also two Adirondack chairs and some other white plastic chairs as well. The lake could be seen from the cottage and the walk to the beach was maybe three minutes with easy to navigate stairs. The beach had a great sandy area and three boat docks to use if you need them. Two kayaks, a row boat, and a paddle boat are available to use for free, if desired. The swimming area had plenty of sand as well, with only a few small rocks here and there, but nothing that was problematic. There is also a swimming platform to jump off of at the end of the roped off swimming area. The lake was clean and refreshing to swim in. It was a little chilly when you first got in, but quickly became enjoyable and cooled you off. Overall this was a great trip and we would eagerly stay at Birchwood Cottages again.

About the Owners: Birchwood Cottages is family owned and operated by Patrick and Margo McGowan and Jenn & Steve Hazelton, under our LLC, ADK Birchwood. Patrick & Margo McGowan, and Steve & Jenn Hazelton have loved the Adirondack Park for decades and had been searching for the perfect spot to make their own in the Adirondacks. Margo and Patrick have always been drawn to the park; they were engaged in Brant Lake (just down the road) and married in Lake Placid, and vacationed in the ADKs just about every year since then. Jenn and Steve were becoming quite the Adirondack groupies, scouring property and vacationing in various spots within the blue line for years and years, it was time to put down some roots.

Why they chose this property

How we came to love Birchwood: Margo had known about Birchwood Cottages for about 15 years, as she went to college with the previous owners daughter, and had visited Birchwood a few times throughout her college days. In years passed, she had always toyed with the idea of buying Birchwood – but considered it pipe dreams at best. In the summer of 2015, the McGowan’s came to Birchwood to have a mini college reunion with her friends and classmates, and it was then, that the timing was right to call Birchwood home! After a quick discussion with Art and Jill Spierre, and a seemingly short drive for Jen and Steve to check the place out, a handshake sealed the deal. The Hazelton’s and McGowan’s spent the summer back and forth to Birchwood, and in discussions with Art and Jill, and were finally able to call Bircwood theirs in September 2015.

Our goal is to keep Birchwood as a family friendly vacation spot for our loyal guests AND NEW ONES, so they too, can call Birchwood home (if even for a week or 2) for years and years to come!

What makes this property unique

Birchwood Cottages is a delightful set of cottages, and one large main house (The Lodge), settled on the west shore of Loon Lake surrounded by the Adirondack Mountains. The cottages can be rented by the week and include a nice sandy beach for the kids to play and swim. Our swimming area is easily accessible by steps that lead to a sandy gradual walk-in, and include a floating dock.

Loon Lake is a nicely tucked away little treasure in Chestertown, NY. There are multitudes of activities to do for a day trip- or never leave the beach- which ever you prefer. Full service marina located across the lake for all of your boating needs, and our large boat docks can accommodate any size boat!
