The Pole House was recently featured in an episode of 'Destination Happiness'

"It is rare someone writes a book good enough for it to enter the literary canon and be enjoyed by successive generations. Decades pass between the composition of one great symphony and another. Its just as infrequent that an architect designs and builds a house that becomes iconic, even famous. In Australia there is the Rose Seidler House, built in NSW in 1950 by Harry Seidler; The Walsh Street house, built in 1958 by Robin Boyd; Grounds House, built in Victoria by Roy Grounds; the Philip Island House, completed in the late eighties by Barrie Marshall; Gottlieb house by Wood Marsh; Kempsey House designed by Glenn Murcutt; and Castlecrag House, in NSW, the work of Hugh Buhrich. One quickly comes to the end of the list.

The avant garde is not so rare. Neither is the excellent. But the avant-garde and excellent together is achieved so seldom we can hold the names of these select few in our heads.

The Pole House at Fairhaven was built by Frank Dixon and instantly became a landmark, a manmade natural attraction, a concrete apostle, a sentinel guarding the eastern gate to The Great Ocean Road. It was built by the ancients in the seventies, a time before computers and ring roads when the coast was a rumour, and it became a totem in a far place.

Children in cars heading down the coast held competitions to see who could spot it first. It became such a shared part of the landscape people stopped to take photos, and as you stand on its balcony with a drink in your hand people wave from passing cars and toot their horns as if you hold some honourary position. Its current owners call this being anonymously famous.

Driving past the Pole House these last thirty-odd years Id always wondered what it would be like looking down from the inside out across the sea. It turns out to be one of those rare experiences that exceed expectations like Paris or the Great Barrier Reef.

The house has just been redesigned by Franco Fiorentini from F2 Architecture and is a brilliant new statue on an already famous pedestal. The first feeling one has at the Pole House is a vertiginous thrill based on altitude and distance, as if you are Leonardo DiCaprio leaning high out over the water off the front of a mighty ship as it cuts through rolling swell. Apprehension and awe mingle as the house sways gently. You are both airborne and seaborne, having left land, and the very Earth, behind. You're also brought face-to-face with the paucity of you own language as you keep repeating the same hackneyed phrases over and over. Wow. I cant believe this. Wow.

The house is a blaze of architectural brio. The taps have lights hidden in their mouths shining down along the bubbling paths of falling water, and alongside each light a diode, so when the water is cold it is blue, as the temperature rises to warm it turns purple and by the time the water is hot it is bright red. The couches recline and stretch at button-press. Blinds covering two whole walls rise at the press of another button, uncovering half the world. Wave your hand near a set of light switches and they glow and tell you what's on and what's not. The main room curves around a central bathroom pod clad in burnt ash panels. In front of the floor-to-ceiling window a suspended fireplace hangs from its own chimney essentially a fire burning in a cold sea. The floor is a dark stone the Medicis might have trod. Wifi is available.

For all this, architectural features really have no significant place in the wonder of this house. Its defining and beguiling feature is that the sea and sky are in the room. The rumbling surf and two hundred degrees of ocean with a vast superstructure of cloud overhead. The mood of the house is set by the mood of these elements. Subservient to a constantly changing pageant of light, cloud, wave and colour.

Dramatic reefs of fire to the west as the sun goes down, while in the East saturated purples fall to night. The closer you are to the sky the more its intricacies are laid bare. You soon understand this room might hold a thousand different sunsets. Another thousand dawns. In here, as part of the sea and sky, each day will be an entity set apart from those before and to come.

The land is a lesser, peripheral, presence. But you could study it all day from up here. Fifty kilometres of coast. From the Split Point Lighthouse at Aireys Inlet the Great Ocean Road rides a rollercoaster of hills through the forests of The Otways to and beyond Lorne. The hills ripple and fold with the passing sun.

Like no other house on the shipwreck coast you have the feeling you are perched on the edge of a vast unknown. Its a rare sensation. You get it at Treetops Hotel in Kenya at the edge of the immense Aberdare National Park. And at El Questro Station, sitting clifftop with the infinite Kimberly laid out below. At the Pole House you are at a frontier, the edge of the world you know and the beginning of some other exotic sphere. Its a mood, a portal to another place Antarctica or ease somewhere further away than you were expecting."

Pole house

The experience was great due to the architectural design and location of the property. However this was marred due to the poor state of cleanliness and safety features of the dwelling. The bed did not have clean pressed linen, there was a short supply of tea or coffee and there is no fire extinguisher- important considering it is heated with a wood fire and none of the electric cords had been tested. This place certainly needs some love and care for the price it is demanding.

Once in a lifetime - worth it

This house is truly a special place. The pictures -- amazing as they are -- are accurate. Don't plan to do other things in the area if you rent this house. Being in this house, taking in the spectacular and enormous views -- that's what you are doing if you rent this house. Note that this agency which manages this house does some things (like payment and check-in info) outside of VRBO. That made things less streamlined than optimal. But what a house!

Weekend getaway

The location and view are amazing. The property is very disappointing inside, almost everything below par. Old, worn and mis matched. We went for the view which did not disappoint.

Amazingly Relaxing and Rejuvenating

The setting is faultless. The view flawless. The modern facilities and amenities add to its iconic charm. Just delightful.

Stunning View

Celebrated our wedding anniversary at the Pole House. Jaw dropping views and just loved going to sleep and waking to the sound of the ocean. Had a friendly Cockatoo come and visit and was also entertained by the paragliders passing by. The views are stunning. Was a little disappointed by the lack of toiletries such as there was no Shampoo/Condition provided as you would get in a hotel, no tissues (a box in the pantry could come in handy) ). Kitchen utensils could have been much cleaner and pantry was a little dirty. The electric stove top is old and was full of grease it wasnt working properly one of the knobs broken off so you couldnt turn off one of the hotplates, I think you are due to buy aa new one. This was not what I would have expected for the amount you pay, however by all means these little things that can be improved on did not ruin our weekend at all. Easy access to the beach which was great.

Breathtaking

They say life is not measured by he number of breaths you take but the moments that take you breath away !! Staying at the iconic Pole House in Fairhaven on the Great Ocean Road was certainly one of those moments. It was such an amazing, unfortgettable experience that words can not truly justify. Soooo Grateful and blessed to have shared it all with my husband , the love of my life , and ticked it off our bucket list. Definitely plan to return to this amazing residence with a magnificent view in a truly beautiful, extraordinary and precious part of the world. Just Priceless and Breathtaking !! With Much love and affection always xoxox

Bucket list tick!

We had a fabulous stay at the pole house. Was a cool night so we we lit the fire and it was magical. Cockatoos came and visited. The views are stunning of course. Mostly amenities were good but could be improved upon (little things like no kitchen sponge, quality of toiletries etc). Kitchen could have been a bit cleaner but certainly nothing to spoil our wonderful stay. Parking was super easy and flat access from car to house. Very close to beautiful beach (5 min walk - a bit steep for those who have mobility issues who might wish to take a car).

Amazing Views

Took my hubby here for his 30th. After wanting to go since we started going out its safe to say , it was well worth the 12 year wait!! We were definitely impressed! Waking up to the waves crashing and having lunch overlooking the beach was just awsome. We had a friendly cockatoo come and visit us a few times, lots of waves from cars and it was handy having a walk way down to the beach. I can now tick The Pole House off my bucket list. Thanks so much

Indescribably beautiful

Had the most incredible stay! We felt so priveledged to be able to stay at such an iconic location and it did not disappoint. The amenities are modern, bed was comfortable and the views are unparralled. Sunset was especially magical and we will definitely be back.

Amazing views

It was amazing place to stay. Very easy to get keys (maybe a bit more security there like ID or even your name). The views just blow you away. What a feeling staying so high above the ground. Nite time there is no lights to find things a bit of a down side (no dinning room lights as broken). Other then that it was a very amazing, enjoyable place to stay. Will be back

Complete Zen

A dream come true for us! Saw in the New Year at the Pole House which was a celebration treat for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. We travelled the Great Ocean road on our honeymoon and never did we think we would be lucky enough to spend 2 nights at this iconic destination. Walking on air with the biggest smiles for 2 days whilst experiencing the mid air accommodation. Thank you to the owners for allowing us to come an experience a truly special place. Brought us even closer. We hope to come back! H and J

Amazing. Memorable.

We stayed 2 nights in the Pole House and it was very memorable. The view is nothing short of stupendous, and walking out on that walkway, and around the balcony is something you won't experience anywhere else. It's not the kind of place you stay long-term: a night or two, because the privacy blinds keep no light out (you'll be awake at the crack of dawn), the kitchen facilities are inadequate (please get rid of that rusty old frying pan! A replacement can be cheaply bought anywhere), and the bed is fairly small (not sure it's even a queen-size bed). But you aren't there to cook or sleep-in: you're here to absorb that amazing, wonderful and ever-changing view of the world in your own personal paradise. I hope to come back again one day, it was a wonderful experience. Thank you to the neighbours' golden border collie Sandy who paid us a lovely visit for 30 minutes or so! (what a lovely sweet dog!)

Amazing property. Brilliant views.

Amazing place, second to none views. Clean. Facilities could be improved on (e.g. no tea bags, the fire place stank out the room of ash and we hadn’t even used it, bed very uncomfortable). Would recommend stay for experience of views mostly.

Spent 2 nights in December as a surprise for my wifes 60th. She loved it. Views are breathtaking. Open the sliding doors, listen to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach. Smell the sea air blowing through the house. At night light up the log fire and enjoy the ambience and serenity. Staff from Great Ocean Road Real Estate were very helpful. Even helped with arranging a Birthday Cake for my wife. Only criticism was it went all to quickly. Hopefully we will come again one day

Booked in this stay a couple of months in advance. Check out is 11am, but due to the next booking the following evening on, we felt quite rushed by the staff at Great Ocean Road Real Estate to check out much earlier so they could collect the key before the allocated check in time of 2pm.

A Place like no other

Planned to propose nearly 2 years in advance and everything went smoothly. Property manager did their job properly and our stay was stunning. I agree with the fact that some amenities are not up to top standard set by the price however for us it was just absolutely worth the experience.

Disappointing

Hands down the worst bed/pillows we’ve ever slept on (we couldn’t sleep), really impractical bathroom with stingy toiletries, old blanket that gave me a skin irritation, dirt under furniture and just run-down overall. Entertainment included extremely difficult to use TV, old tennis ball in the back of one of the cupboards, and the board game “Squatter”...in case you’ve ever felt the need to know if you have what it takes to run a sheep station or two. For the money you spend to stay here, you would expect much better amenities - it feels cheap. It feels like the owners do not care if their guests have a quality time. The view is amazing and we get to say “we stayed at The Pole House” but that’s about it. Real low point of our honeymoon.

Beautiful view, but overpriced

The house is a great novelty and lovely to experience the architecture and view. It’s let down however by an uncomfortable bed and pillows, lack of space in the bathroom to put any toiletries and just poor quality items like a rusty bin in the bathroom, thin towels and doona.
