THE CAPTAIN'S HOUSE - DEER ISLAND NB - WATERFRONT - SUNRISES

This house was built by Captain George W. Cook in early 1800s. He was the Captain of a merchant sailing vessel called the Jed F. Duren. a large vessel at 112 tonnes. Materials to build the house were brought in on a barge from Nova Scotia and a crew from Gloucester, Mass built the house. 2 of Captain George W Cook's original navigation maps are mounted in the house. One in the current Captain's Master Bedroom and one in the living room. This house is really cool and the water and sunset views are amazing!!

Great place to relax!

We wanted to veg out for a few days and maybe see a few migrating birds. Missed the migration (due to our own schedule restrictions) but got the veg out time. There's not a lot to do on Deer Island except explore . Great places to explore and friendly relaxed populace. If you want "low key" This is it. The house is fine--just right really. Slippery shower floor, but that we fixed with a towel.

Perfect place to decompress

The location and the house were truly perfect for getting away from daily grind. House is adorable and has such an interesting history. Had everything we needed and more. Location overlooking the bay provides an awesome and ever-changing view. We didn’t want to leave

A wonderful getaway by the sea

It was a true island life experience at a beautiful property that overlooks a calm area of the Bay of Fundy sheltered by islands. The fire pit on the beach really completed the experience. Just watch out for high tide 😊 The house has all the character that you would expect from the description and the owner is kind and helpful.

A little piece of paradise

Lovely spot that is very true to the listing and and description. If you are looking for a nature-filled, calm, relaxing, meditative vacation, this would be a great spot for you. It's right on the ocean and has a perfect yard for the kids to play in (which extends right down to the beach). The kids loved the neat bedroom upstairs and the extra touches of the stuffies in the room was much appreciated. Lisa was a wonderful host and a delight to communicate with. Highly recommend!

Glad we choose this house for our stay on Fundy Bay

My wife and I stayed here recently with another senior couple. I violated two of my rules when booking this house. Never rent a house that states "in the process of being renovated" and never rent a house without reviews. After viewing the location, pictures and communicating with Lisa, I had a hunch this was going to be a neat spot. It was. If you look closely, you can tell this house is still a work in progress, but we found the kitchen, living areas, bedrooms and bathrooms in this old, historic home to be attractively and comfortably remodeled and furnished. Lisa proved to be perhaps THE MOST responsive owner I have ever dealt with for an online rental by owner. At my suggestion, she even found a way to complete a second bathroom for the upstairs bedrooms prior to our visit. The view of the Fundy Bay from this house is incredible, the deck is an up-close, secluded, quiet place to experience the famous Fundy Bay tides. You can literally throw a rock from the deck into Fundy Bay. The only access to Deer Island is by private ferry from Campobello Island and government ferry to the mainland, but if you get out of your car and walk around the deck of the ferry boat, you can enjoy an incredibly beautiful twenty minute ride across the bay. We explored Campobello, St. John and many of the coastal attractions around St. John with relatively easy day trips. However, I wish we had been able to spend more time just sitting on the deck and watching the fishing boats, seabirds and the tide roll in and out. I guess we will have to come back again. I would certainly stay here again if we do.

Excellent and attractive property in great location

This is an excellent and attractive place, well appointed, good outdoor spaces, and in a great location on the water. Deer Island and nearby Campobello are simple but appealing and it's not too far to St Andrew's and St George for greater variety of services and sites. The photographs are accurate; the kitchen and bathrooms are well appointed; and the house is surprisingly spacious. We enjoyed our time thoroughly.

Oceanside Bliss

The property was exactly as advertised. Well decorated and the essentials were provided. Planning around the ferry to and from the island was a bit of work but well worth it. The island itself is full of natural wonders and the ocean is right in the backyard. A wonderful experience for my family.

About the host

Hosted by Lisa

Host profile image
Mike is a lobster fisherman on Deer Island and Lisa is an IT professional who does consulting work and manages the family businesses. We love the water - on the water, under the water, and just looking at the water... throw in beautiful sunsets and we are in heaven and you will be too!

Why they chose this property

This place is magical is all I can say - it has 220 years of character and personality with all the modern comforts. Your front yard is the ocean and you can see the harbour bouy lights at night from your bed in the Captain's Master Suite. We use this property year around and during lobster season as crew quarters. But it is such a cool place that we wanted to open up some weeks to share this place with others and you are helping us with the maintenance and upkeep of this old house :)

What makes this property unique

Peaceful with sound of the ocean - and front row seat to harbour "traffic"
