Loved this property for our stay in Maine. I originally picked this place because of it's proximity to Baxter State Park. Our plan was to hike Katahdin and we wanted to be close to the park, but we are not campers, so this was perfect. I ended up also loving the lake, and sitting on the dock in the mornings, and the kayaks. It was so peaceful. Would love to come back and stay here again next time we come to Maine.
We really loved our stay at this traditional Maine camp with modern amenities. The cabin was clean and quiet with easy access to Baxter State Park and Mount Katahdin. The fire pit area and dock were a huge plus. A restaurant, bar, and general store were easy walking diatance. The lake was pristine and we spent a half day paddling in its coves and around its islands. We would stay again if we were in the area.
Overall the camp was great!
Clean and cozy. The location was amazing!!
However , the hum of a power machine at the end of the cove was a little distracting for being in the country . About 50% of the time it was on. Not sure what it was, but it was a noisy hummm.
A great spot to relax after hiking Katahdin. We loved the screen porch, the sounds of the loons, and the kayaks. Cabin was clean, cozy, and comfortable. Close to Northern Trading Post, which is good for food/supplies/drinking water, and a short drive to River Driver’s Restaurant at NEOC for the nights you don’t want to cook. Check-in/out instructions were clear, and communication with Erin was good.
Great spot so close to Baxter. Loved to lake, paddleboarding or using the kayaks they left for us. Clean, orderly and peaceful. Perfect way to unplug and unwind.
We loved staying at this little cabin on the water with our family of seven. The house was small but had everything we needed. I appreciated that the kitchen was well stocked, the house was clean, and there were plenty of kayaks and a canoe we could use along with life jackets. We loved staying in the pines and using the fire pit. It felt like we were camping without having to bring all of the camping gear. The only reason I give this place a four-star rating is that I don't remember seeing anywhere in the listing that there is NO POTABLE WATER at the house. You have to bring in all of your own water for drinking and cooking. The first time I remember hearing about that was when I received the check-in instructions. Even though we had to bring water, we would stay again. Great place!
This cottage is the perfect location for exploring Baxter State Park. It’s quiet, and the lake is beautiful. We paddled to a local restaurant for lunch, enjoyed hanging out on the dock, and roasting marshmallows around the campfire. The lack of cell service and WiFi forced everyone to unplug.
Erin was great and was quick to resolve a minor mix up.

Clean and Convenient
This is a great booking for the vacationer using this as a central location for hiking, boating and fishing . Walking distance to general store and dining/take out at the Inn. The cabin is clean (no weird smell); and and has a well equipped kitchen. It was wonderful to be able to look out on the lake with coffee in the morning; a privilege to witness a Bald Eagle hunting on several occasions - even swooping over our heads!
This is the second year in a row that the "Ames Camp" was rented by one of the family for the yearly gathering at the Harris Camp 4 doors down. Although only 4 of us slept there, we were able to have dinner there on the rainy, stormy nights. We used the campfire ring to gather for snacks and sharing of sweet Millinocket Lake vacation memories spanning 75 plus years. The camp allowed us to accommodate the needs of younger and older members of our clan. The cabin is well equipped to serve our needs well.
We had a great stay at Ames Camp. It was perfectly located for my family's white water rafting and hiking adventures. About 15 minutes from the entrance to Baxter State Park, and having the Trading Post deli/convenience store right around the corner was really handy. On the days we weren't out exploring, we really enjoyed preparing meals in the well stocked kitchen, canoeing the lake, and relaxing by the outdoor fireplace or on that wonderful porch. We hope to visit again sometime, maybe in the Autumn, I can imagine how beautiful it must be when the leaves are changing.
Perfect place to come back to after a day hiking and fishing at Baxter . The cabin was clean....filled with everything anyone would need...comfortable beds...quiet....wonderful porch to enjoy a cocktail...and a fun game of Sequence most nights. Looking forward to another stay next year.

About the host

We are a midwest family with Maine roots. My grandmother was from Millinocket and we have been vacationing here since we were kids. My family is now enjoying this property and are excited that we can share it with other travelers.
Why they chose this property
Thank you for choosing to spend time at our camp (Maine lingo for cabin/lake house). Our relatives Ivan and Frances Ames leased the camp from Great Northern Paper Company starting in 1948 for around the price of $15 per year, and it has been in the family since. In 1960, the kitchen and porch were added to the original house, moving the kitchen from the bunk room to its current location. Locals still refer to this as the Ames Camp.
What makes this property unique
Lake front on 2 sides, walking distance to Big Moose Inn, trading post. This site is in close proximity to Baxter State Park.
